  • As a fundamental study to apply high pressure injection system to direct injection diesel engine, fuel injection system and constant volume combustion chamber were made and the behaviors of evaporating spray with the variation of injection pressure and the ambient gas temperature were observed by using high speed camera, and the combusion characteristics with the variation of injection pressure and A/F ratio were analyzed. As injection pressure increases, spray tip penetration and spray angle increase and, as a results spray volume increases. This helps an uniform mixing of fuel and air. Spray liquid core length decreases as ambient gas temperature increases, while it decreases as injection pressure increases but the effect of ambient gas temperature is dorminant. As injection pressure increases, ignition delay is shortened and combustion rate being raised, maximum heat release rate increases. It become clear that High injection pressure has high level of potential to improve the performance of DI-diesel engine.

  • The spray combustion and spray cooling depends on droplet evaporation. So, evaporation model for spray has been requested and lots of investigation has been done and various reliable models have been developed also for last few decades. In the present study, One dimensional quasi-steady spherically symmetric droplet evaporation model for micro-gravity is developed. The gas phase was assumed as steady state and the thermophysical properties are calculated as a function of temperature, pressure and composition and the properties used in the model was validated by NIST web data and overall evaporation history results was compared with experimental results by Nomura and Qasim and gave satisfactory agreements. Through this model, diverse phenomenon was investigated, especially regarding the effects of ambient pressure and temperature. The effects of pressure for the droplet evaporation time were studied. The high pressure increased the droplet surface temperature and made effect on the evaporation time depend on atmospheric temperature. The role of the ambient temperature was investigated and explained. The basic investigation for the evaporation process according to variation of droplet diameter and surface temperature were also investigated and the well-known phenomena, like D-square-law, were reported, too.

  • The safety factor of hydraulic piston pumps & motors due to high pressurization, high speedization and low weight/volume realization to enhance the output density shows a tendency to decrease. Therefore more effective test methods are necessary to predict the exact life. The failure of hydraulic pumps & motors operating in high pressure and high speed mainly occurs in piston-shoe assemblies, and the major failure mode is wearout of the shoe surface. The sensitive parameters in the endurance life test are speed, pressure and temperature, and the failure production increases in proportion to the operating time. In this research, the authors propose the combined accelerated life test model using the analysis method of the combined accelerated life test results of piston-shoe assemblies by applying simultaneously high speed, high pressure and high temperature in accordance with variation of speed, pressure and temperature to reduce the life test time.

  • The pressure measurement in the high-temperature liquid metal system, such as Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor(SFR), is important and yet it is very challenging due to its nature. The measuring pressure is relatively at low range and the applied temperature varies in wide range. Moreover, the pressure transfer material in impulse line needs to considered the high temperature condition. The conventional diaphragm-based approach cannot be used for it is impossible to remove the effect of thermal expansion. In this paper, the Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor-based pressure measuring concept is suggested that it is free of problems induced by the thermal expansion. To verify this concept, a prototype was fabricated and tested in an appropriate conditions. The uncertainty analysis result of the experiment is also included. The final result of this study clearly showed that the FBG-based pressure transmitter system is applicable to the extreme environment, such as SFR and any other high-temperature liquid metal system and the measurement uncertainty is within reasonable range.

  • A structural integrity evaluation program (STEP) was developed for the high temperature reactor design evaluation according to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME B&PV), Section III, Rules for Construction of Nuclear Facility Components, Division 5, High Temperature Reactors, Subsection HB. The program computerized HBB-3200 (the design by analysis procedures for primary stress intensities in high temperature services) and Appendix T (HBB-T) (the evaluation procedures for strain, creep and fatigue in high temperature services). For evaluation, the material properties and isochronous curves presented in Section II, Part D and HBB-T were computerized for the candidate materials for high temperature reactors. The program computerized the evaluation procedures and the constants for the weldment. The program can generate stress/temperature time histories of various loads and superimpose them for creep damage evaluation. The program increases the efficiency of high temperature reactor design and eliminates human errors due to hand calculations. Comparisons that verified the evaluation results that used the STEP and the direct calculations that used the Excel confirmed that the STEP can perform complex evaluations in an efficient and reliable way. In particular, fatigue and creep damage assessment results are provided to validate the operating conditions with multiple types of cycles.

  • In nuclear power plant (NPP) accidents, the containment is subject to high temperatures and high internal pressures, which may further trigger serious chain accidents such as core meltdown and hydrogen explosion, resulting in a significantly higher accident level. Therefore, studying the mechanical performance of a containment under high temperature and high internal pressure is relevant to the safety of NPPs. Based on similarity principles, the 1:3.2 scale model of a prestressed concrete containment vessel (PCCV) of a NPP was designed. The loading method, which considers the thermal-pressure coupling conditions, was used. The mechanical response of the PCCV was investigated with a simultaneous increase in internal pressure and temperature, and the failure mechanism of the PCCV under thermal-pressure coupling conditions was revealed.

  • A marine alga, Spirulina maxima, was extracted under high pressure and low temperature conditions at 500 MPa and $60^{\circ}C$ for 5 and 10 min. A high pressure of 500 MPa was applied to improve process yields because of low temperature extraction. This method resulted in highest higher extraction yield of 26.1% (w/w) in comparison to those results obtained from conventional extraction methods which produced a yield of 17.6% (w/w) from water. The extracts from this process also showed 19% of low cytotoxicity against human normal fibroblast cells in adding 1.0 mg/ml of the highest concentration. The crude extract significantly reduced the production of Prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) from CCD-986sk cells and increased nitric oxide production by macrophages. These higher activities of enhancing skin immune functions were found to have high antioxidant extract properties, like a 98% increase in DPPH radical scavenging activity. The extracts from the high pressure process showed a higher elution of active components than other processes and generated new compounds based on HPLC analysis. This clearly indicates that the extracts from high pressure and low temperature conditions have higher skin immune activation properties that have not been previously reported.

  • This article presents the unique characteristics of cavitation, those are very high pressure and very high temperature even in a very short time. Such the high-pressure causes the destruction of material, which sometimes brings a severe problem to fluid machinery. However, if we look the cavitation from the different direction, such the high pressure can be used to various applications. The author presents two examples of the utilization of cavitation recently done at the Toyo University. Those are 'dispersion of spilled oil' and 'killing planktons'.

  • The effect of high ambient temperature and pressure conditions on the combustion performance of n-butanol, n-heptane and its mixing fuel (BH 20) were studied in this work. To reveal this, the closed homogeneous reactor model applied and 1000-1200 K of the initial temperature, 20-30 atm of initial pressure and 1.0 of equivalence ratio were set to numerical analysis. It was found that the results of combustion temperature was increased and the ignition delay was decreased when the ambient conditions were elevated since the combustion reactivity increased at the high ambient conditions. On the contrary, under the low combustion temperature condition, the combustion pressure was more influenced by the ambient temperature in the same ambient conditions. In addition, the total mass and the mass density of tested fuels were influenced by the ambient pressure and temperature. Also, soot generation of mixing fuel was decreased than n-heptane fuel due to the oxygen content of n-butanol fuel.

  • The impact/sliding wear tests have been performed in high temperature high pressure water in order to evaluate the effect of spring shape on the wear behavior of a spring supported tube for nuclear fuel fretting study. The results indicate that the tube wear volume and the size of the wear scar are closely related to each spring shape. From the analysis of the wear scar, it is possible to extract the real worn area (Aw) from the size of the wear scar (At). In addition, we found that the wear volume has a linear relation with the real worm area rather than the size of wear scar and this was only determined by each spring shape in the high temperature and pressure water condition. From the above results, it is possible to evaluate the wear resistant spring using the correlation between the variation of the real worn area and the wear behavior at each spring.
