  • Research reactors are operated under ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, which is much less severe conditions compared to those in typical nuclear power plants. Due to the high temperature, heat resistant materials such as austenite stainless steel should be used for the reactors in typical nuclear power plants. Whereas, as the effect of temperature is low for research reactors, materials with high resistance to neutron irradiation, such as zircaloy and beryllium, are used. Therefore, these conditions should be considered when performing integrity assessment for research reactors. In this study, a computational technique through finite element (FE) analysis was developed considering the operating conditions and materials of research reactor when conducting integrity assessment. Neutron irradiation analysis techniques using thermal expansion analysis were proposed to consider neutron irradiation growth and swelling in zirconium alloys and beryllium. A user subroutine program that can calculate the strain rate induced by neutron irradiation creep was developed for use in the commercial analysis program Abaqus. To validate the proposed technique and the user subroutine, FE analysis results were compared with hand-calculation results, and showed good agreement. Consequently, developed technique and user subroutine are suitable for evaluating structural integrity of research reactors.

  • In deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, the surrounding rock at the immediate vicinity of the deposition hole may experience localized changes in permeability due to in-situ stress at depth, swelling pressure from resaturated bentonite buffer, and the heat generated from the decay of radioactive isotopes. In this study, experimental data on changes in permeability of granite, a promising candidate rock type in South Korea, were obtained by applying various confining pressures and temperature conditions expected in the actual disposal environment. By conducting the permeability test on KURT granite specimens under three or more hydrostatic pressure conditions, the relation in which the permeability decreases exponentially as the confining pressure increases was derived. The temperature-induced changes in permeability were found to be negligible at temperatures below the expected maximum of 90℃. In addition, by establishing a relation in which the initial permeability is proportional to the power of the initial porosity, it was possible to estimate permeability value for granite with a specific porosity under a certain confining pressure.

  • There are several methods for shaping foams, but the most commonly used methods involve the use of resin mixed with a foaming agent, which is then foamed under high temperature and pressure in the case of compression foaming, or foamed under high temperature without applying pressure in the case of atmospheric foaming. The polymers used for foaming require design and analysis of optimal foaming conditions in order to achieve foaming under ambient pressure. Environmentally friendly bio-based polymers face challenges when it comes to foaming on their own, which has led to ongoing research in blending them with resins capable of traditional foam production. This study investigates changes in the characteristics of bio-based polymer-EVA blend foams based on variations in the content of bio-based polymers and explores the optimal foaming conditions according to crosslinking. The correlation between foaming characteristics and mechanical properties of the foams was examined. Through this research, we gained insights into how the content of bio-based polymers affects the properties of foams containing bio-based polymers and identified differences between ambient pressure and high-pressure foaming processes. Additionally, the feasibility of commercializing bio-based polymer-EVA composite foams was confirmed.

  • As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

  • The electron energy distribution function in mercury discharge positive columns are calculated numerically from the Boltzmann eqation under a set of parameters, such as the electron temperature to. the atomic temperature Tw. the electron number density no. and the electric field E. Especially, using the approximation that collision cross sections only depend on the energy, the calculated electron energy distribution function was shown that it falls off rapidly in the high energy tail.

  • The study was carried out about the roof hood structure of power car for Korean High Speed Train. The compatibility for applied material and volume of hood duct was studied using analysis about heat and flow distributions. The materials and volume of duct were mainly determined by output air temperature and flow rate of each electric blocks. This report was described, which focuses on pressure distribution and air temperature within engine compartment of power car.

  • A neutron detector, in general, can not be utilized as the thermal neutron detecting chamber in the nuclear power reactor, especially P.W.R. due to the characteristics of high temperature, high pressure and high neutron flux in a reactor vessel. We have performed an experiment to detect the thermal neutrons at 400.deg. C and high flux of thermal neutron in a power reactor. Coating boron-10 on the aluminium plates by means of surface diffusion method at 600.deg. C for 5 hours in an electric furace, also we made a typical chamber which was compensated ionization chamber filled with free air as an ionization gas. It was checked the chamber characteristics in the TRIGA MARK-II Reactor at the power level from zero to 250KW. The chamber current showed a perfect linear increase to power increase. However, many variation of the measured current were observed within the power of 50KW.

  • A photoetching process is widely used for small and high precision parts in machinery, electronic and semi-conductor industries. One of the high precision parts, grid is very important part of digitron which use electron display, and it is fabricated by only photoetching process because of high precision. In this study, to develop high precision digitron grid, characteristics of etching solution were investigated with electrochemical test, that was potentiodynamic test and immersion test in the ferric chloride solution and added some additives. Based on the electrochemical etching test, grid was fabricated by continuous photoetching process at various etching condition. From the result of measured line width and etching depth under-cut and etching factor were calculated. For the fabrication of 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ line width, optimal etching condition was etching temperature 40~$45^{\circ}C$, spray pressure 1.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and etching time 3~4min.

  • A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection in a cavity with high viscous fluid is presented. Finite volume method was employed for the discretization and PISO algorithm was used for calculating pressure term. The parameters governing the problem are the Rayleigh number ($10^3\;{\leq}\;Ra\;{\leq}\;10^5$), the Reynolds number (0 < Re $\leq$ 1), and the aspect ratio (0.5 $\leq$ AR $\leq$ 2). The fluid used is silicon oil, a high prandtl number fluid, Pr = 909.1. The results show velocity vectors and temperature distributions. It is found that the periodic flows in a cavity are observed at very low Reynolds numbers, and the period of periodic flow decreases with increasing Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, and increases with increasing aspect ratio. Also, the Reynolds number range of periodic flow increases with increasing Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratio.

  • The present study is to reduce the thermal phenomena and stack effect of nude elevator of the high-rise building used CFD simulation. Since many High-rise buildings used the curtain-wall glass, thermal phenomena and stack effect can easily occur at hot and cold season, respectively. The simulation has been conducted and verified for the effects of the amount of suppling air to the environment of the inside nude elevator shaft. The results of simulations show that the problems due to the thermal and stack effect will be reduced by enforced ventilation or natural ventilation and those will be presented by temperature and velocity profiles and pressure differences.
