  • Characteristics of Al-based composites with waste stainless steel short fiber, fabricated by magnetic pulsed compaction and sintering were investigated. The compacts prepared by magnetic pulsed compaction showed high relative density and homogeneous microstructure compared with that by conventional press compaction. The relative density of sintered composites at $430^{\circ}C$ for 1 h exhibited the same value with compacts and decreased with increase in STS short fiber content. The reaction between Al and STS phase was confirmed by the microstructural analysis using EDS. The sintered composites, prepared by magnetic pulsed compaction, showed increased hardness value with increasing STS fiber content. Maximum yield strength of 100 MPa and tensile strength of 232 MPa were registered in the AI-based composite with 30 vol% STS short fiber.

  • This paper presents a fatigue assessment model that was developed for corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The proposed model considers the fatigue properties of the constituent materials as well as the section equilibrium. The model provides a rational approach that can be used to explicitly assess the failure mode, fatigue life, fatigue strength, stiffness, and post-fatigue ultimate capacity of corroded beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP. A parametric analysis demonstrated that the controlling factor for the fatigue behavior of the beams is the fatigue behavior of the corroded steel bars. Strengthening with one layer of non-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of beams with rebar at a low corrosion degree to the level of the uncorroded beams, while strengthening with 20- and 30%-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of the beams with medium and high corrosion degrees, respectively, to the values of the uncorroded beams. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the factors for the strengthening design of corroded RC beams fall in the order of stiffness, fatigue life, fatigue strength, and ultimate capacity.

  • The lightness of components required on marine and shipbuilding industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, fatigue failure phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property. Therefore, antifatigue failure technology takes an important part on current industries. In this study, it is investigated about endurance and fatigue crack propagation rate of according to welding methods such as SMAW, FCAW and SAW commonly used for welding structures in present. Endurance limits carried out highly in the order of SMAW, FCAW, SAW and fatigue crack propagation rate out lowly in the order of SMAW, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW welding method for welding structures with small welding capacity and FCAW, SAW methods for large welding structures after consideration about economic gains and operation efficiency of welding. Fatigue crack propagation rate is more affected by strength of welding materials than endurance limit of welding materials according to welding methods.

  • SiC/SiC composites and monolithic SiC materials have been fabricated by the melt infiltration process, through the creation of crystallized SiC phase by the chemical reaction of C and Si. The reinforcing material used in this system was a braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC based materials were investigated through means of SEM, TEM, EDS and three point bending test. The matrix morphology of RS-SiS/SiC composites was greatly composed of the SiC phases that the chemical composition of Si and C is different. The TEM analysis showed that the crystallized SiC phases were finely distributed in the matrix region of RS-SiC/SiC composites. RS-SiC/SiC composites also represented a good flexural strength and a high density, accompanying a pseudo failure behavior.

  • GNPs have several excellent mechanical properties including high strength, a good young's modulus, thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, electronic shielding, etc. In this study, CF/GNP/Epoxy composites were manufactured using GNP weight ratios of 0.15 wt%, 0.3 wt%, 0.5 wt%, 0.7 wt% and 1 wt%. The composites were manufactured with a mechanical method (3-roll-mill). Tensile, impact and wear tests were performed according to ASTM standards D3039, D256 and D3181, respectively. The results show that the CF/GNP0.3wt%/Epoxy composites have good mechanical properties, e.g., tensile strength and impact and wear resistance. In this study, both carbon fabric and GNPs were used as reinforcements in the composites. The mechanical properties increased and weight loss decreased as the GNP content in the resin films was increased.

  • It is know that $Si_3-N_4$ bonded SiC has almost all the valuable properties needed for the high temperature material and thus has bery wide range of applicability. Si powder and two different sized SiC powder were used as the raw mateials. Specimens were prepared by heating the green compact mode of the raw materials with polyvinyl alcohol binder in the nitrogen atmosphere. The bond-ing of SiC particles is brought about with the formation of reaction bonded silicon nitride phase between the particles he influences of the variation of the relative amounts of the raw materials and the amount of the organic binder on the density and the bend strength of the specimens were investigated. It was shown that the calculation of the amount of the nitridation of Si is somewhat complicated matter since some portion of the organic binder reacts with the Si during the firing process. Fixing the Si amount to 20w/o the distributions of the size of the SiC particles that gives the maximum density and the maximum strnegth were obtained through experiments. It was observed that the two distributions were not equal to each other. As the amount of Si increased the amount of Si reacted with nitrogen and the strength increased. The fracture mode was intergranular for the most part and the transgranular fracture was scarcely observed.

  • Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) had been fabricated by electrophoretic infiltration combined with ultrasonication. Nano-sized ${\beta}$-SiC added with 12 wt% of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additive and Tyranno$^{TM}$-SA3 fabric were used as a matrix phase and fiber reinforcement, respectively. After hot pressing at 5 different conditions, the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of $SiC_f$/SiC were characterized. Hot pressing at relatively severe conditions, such as $1750^{\circ}C$ for 1 and 2 h, resulted in a brittle fracture behavior due to the strong fiber-matrix interface in spite of their high flexural strength. On the other hand, toughened $SiC_f$/SiC composite could be achieved by hot pressing at milder condition because of the formation of weak interface in spite of the decreased flexural strength. These results proposed the importance of weak fiber-matrix interface in the fabrication of ductile $SiC_f$/SiC composite.

  • The LTCCs (low-temperature co-fired ceramics) are very important for electronic industry to build smaller RF modules and to fulfill the necessity for miniaturization of devices in wireless communication industry. The dielectric materials with sintering temperature $T_{sint}$<$900^{\circ}C$ are required. In this study, we investigated with glass-ceramic composition, which was crystallized with two crystals. The microstructure, crystal phases, thermal and mechanical properties, and dielectric properties of the composites were investigated using FE-SEM, XRD, TG-DTA, 4-point bending strength test and LCR measurement. The starting temperature for densification of a sintered body was at $779{\sim}844^{\circ}C$ and the glass frits were formatted to the crystal phases, $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$(anorthite) and $CaMgSi_O_6$(diopside), at sintering temperature. The sintered bodies exhibited applicable dielectric properties, namely 6-9 for ${\varepsilon}_r$. The results suggest that the glass-ceramic composite would be potentially possible to application of low dielectric L TCC materials.

  • Car industry has required light-weight steels, but still with strong mechanical strength. To meet this requirement, a variety of researches on Fe-Al alloys have been performed. As Al is being added in a disordered manner, alloys become more ductile and show higher yield stress. At a certain concentration of Al, however, the Fe-Al alloy system falls in a second phase whose mechanical strength is worsened. To understand the microscopic role of Al, we investigate the stability and the elastic properties of various Fe-Al alloys using ab initio density functional theory. At agiven Al concentration, the equilibrium geometry is obtained among several disordered Fe-Al alloy structures by performing the geometry relaxation. The formation energies and elastic properties such as bulk moduli of the equilibrium structures are also computed as a function of Al concentration. We also investigate the effects of different elements such as Si and Mn. Fe-Si alloy systems exhibit unusual mechanical behaviors requiring further investigation to understand their physical origin. Especially, the microscopic role of Mn is investigated to find its physical origin of preventing the Fe-Al alloy system from forming an unfavorable second phase. The effect of manganese on mechanical properties of Fe-based alloys is also explored.

  • The influence of thermo-mechanical cycling on the microstructure and strength in the weld coarse-grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) of Ti-Nb added low carbon HSLA steel was explored through Vickers hardness tests, nanoindentation experiments, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Undeformed and deformed CGHAZs were simulated using Gleeble simulator with different heat inputs of 30kJ/cm and 300kJ/cm. At high heat input of 300kJ/cm, the CGHAZ consisted of ferrite and pearlite and then their grain sizes were not affected by deformation. At low heat input of 30kJ/cm, the CGHAZ consisted of lath martensite and then the sizes of prior austenite grain, packet and lath width decreased with deformation. In addition, the fraction of particle increased with deformation and this is because the precipitation kinetics was accelerated by deformation. Meanwhile, the Vickers and nanoindentation hardness of deformed CGHAZ with 30kJ/cm heat input were higher than those of undeformed CGHAZ, which are due to the effect of grain refinement and precipitation strengthening.
