  • Flexible electronic devices are exposed to repeated mechanical deformation; therefore, electrode performance is an important element. Recently, a new technology has been developed to improve the adhesion strength between polymer substrates and metal thin films through the cross-linking reaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) bioconjugation proteins; however, additional performance evaluation as an electrode is necessary. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of adhesive strength between a flexible substrate and a metal thin film on the performance of a flexible electrode. Cracks and changes in the electrical resistance of the electrode surface were observed through outer bending fatigue tests and tensile tests. As a result of a bending fatigue test of 50,000 cycles and a tensile test at 10% strain, the change in the electrical resistance of the flexible electrode with a high adhesion strength was less than 40%, and only a few microcracks were formed on the surface; thus, the electrical performance did not significantly deteriorate. Through this study, the relationship between the adhesion strength and electrical performance was identified. This study will provide useful information for analyzing the performance of flexible electrodes in the commercialization of flexible electronic devices in the future.

  • Lithium salt have been used mainly as electrolyte of thermal battery for electricity storage. Recently, The 3phase lithium salt(LiCl-LiF-LiBr) is tried to use as electrolyte of thermal battery for high electric power. It is reported that LiCl-LiF-LiBr salt have high ion mobility due to its high lithium ion concentration. Solid lithium salt is melt to liquid state at above $500{^{\circ}C}$. The lithium ion is easily reacted with support materials. Because the melted lithium ion has small ion size and high ion mobility. For the increasing mechanical strength of electrolyte pellet, the research was started to apply ceramic filter to support of electrolyte. In this study, authors used SiOC web and glass fiber filter as ceramic mat for support of electrolyte and impregnated LiCl-LiF-LiBr salt into ceramic mat at above $500{^{\circ}C}$. The fabricated electrolyte using ceramic mat was washed with distilled water for removing lithium salt on ceramic mat. The washed ceramic mat was observed for lithium ion reaction behavior with XRD, SEM-EDS and so on.

  • Since the 1990s, the second generation of Zirconium alloys containing main alloy compositions of Nb, Sn and Fe have been used as a replacement of Zircaloy-4 (Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr), a first-generation Zirconium alloy, to meet severe and rigorous reactor operating conditions characterized by high-burn-up, high-power and high-pH operations. In this study, the mechanical properties and creep behaviors of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloys were investigated in a temperature range of $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ and in a stress range of $80{\sim}150\;MPa$. The mechanical testing results indicate that the yield and tensile strengths of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy are slightly higher compared to those of Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr. This can be explained by the second phase strengthening of the $\beta$-Nb precipitates. The creep test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate decreases with the increase in the applied stress. However, the stress exponent of the Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr alloy is lower than that of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy in a relatively high stress range, whereas the creep activation energy of the former is slightly higher than that of the latter. This can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by the interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms. A higher Sn content leads to a lower stress exponent value and higher creep activation energy.

  • In this study, in order to develop organic-inorganic hybrid packaging materials(PM) of bike paths using blast furnace slag(BS) as industrial by-products, fundamental properties of organic-inorganic hybrid packaging materials were performed. Test result, the increase of Acryl emulsion polymer(AEP)/binder(B) ratios tends to delay the setting time, to increase the table flow, to decrease the strength by material segregation and to increase the length change. The optimal mix proportion of AEP decides on 40%(AEP/B) due to workability and high strength. The increase of BS replacement ratios also tends to delay the setting time, to separate AEP from B and to decrease the strength by material segregation. When BS replacement ratios were lower than 40%, they are satisfied with goal properties.

  • Properties of Ag thick films fabricated by using low temperature curable silver pastes were investigated. Ag pastes were consisted of polymer resins and silver powders. Ag pastes were used for conductive or fixing materials between board and various electrical and electronic devices. Low temperature curable Ag pastes have some advantages over high temperature curable types. In cases of chip mounting, soldering properties were required for screen printed Ag thick films. In this study, four types of Ag pastes were fabricated with different compositions. Screen printed Ag thick films on alumina substrates were fabricated at various curing temperatures and times. Thickness, resistivity, adhesive strength and solderability of fabricated Ag thick films were characterized. Finally, Ag thick films produced using Ag pastes, sample A and B, cured at $150^{\circ}C$ for longer than 6 h and $180^{\circ}C$ for longer than 2 h, and $150^{\circ}C$ for longer than 1 h and $180^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, respectively, showed low resistivities of $10^{-4}$ $∼10^{-5}$ Ωcm and good adhesive strength of 1∼5 Mpa. Soldering properties of those Ag thick films with curing temperatures at solder of 62Sn/36Pb/3Ag were also investigated.

  • AlN-BN ceramic composites were fabricated and their mechanical properties were investigated. The relative density of hot-pressed composites decreased with increasing BN content, but over $99\%$ could be obtained with 30 $vol\%$ BN in AlN. YAG was formed in the composites and monolithic AlN as a second phase by the reaction between $Y_2O_3$, added as sintering aid, and $Al_2O_3$. As expected, Vickers hardness and Young's modulus decreased with increasing BN content. The three-point flexural strength also showed similar behavior decreasing from 500 MPa of monolith down to 250 MPa by the addition 30 $vol\%$ BN. However, interestingly, the standard deviation of the strength values decreased significantly as BN was added to AlN. As a result, the Weibull modulus of the AlN-30 $vol\% BN composite was 21.3, which was extremely high. Fractography and crack path studies revealed that BN platelets induced grain pull-out and crack bridging in a bigger scale during crack propagation. Consequently, fracture toughness increased as more BN was added, reaching 4.5 $MPa\sqrt{m}$ at 40 $vol\%$ BN.

  • Carbon nanotube buckypaper (CNTs-BP)/thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomer composites were successfully fabricated. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites exhibited simultaneous improvements in both tensile modulus and strength by 1360 and 430%, respectively, as compared to pure PU. Possible reinforcing mechanisms were evidenced by SEM analyses and tensile tests. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites can be potentially used as an inter-reinforcing agent in ultra-lightweight, high-strength aircraft, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, etc.

  • Using a customized diffusion bonder, we executed diffusion bonding for ring shaped white gold and red gold samples (inner, outer diameter, and thickness were 15.7, 18.7, and 3.0 mm, respectively) at a temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and applied pressure of 2300 N in a vacuum of $5{\times}10^{-2}$ torr for 180 seconds. Optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to investigate the microstructure and compositional changes. The mechanical properties were confirmed by Vickers hardness and shear strength tests. Optical microscopy and FE-SEM confirmed the uniform bonding interface, which was without defects such as micro pores. EDS mapping analysis confirmed that each gold alloy was 14K with the intended composition; Ni and Cu was included as coloring metals in the white and red gold alloys, respectively. The effective diffusion coefficient was estimated based on EDS line scanning. Individual values of Ni and Cu were $5.0{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$ and $8.9{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$, respectively. These values were as large as those of the melting points due to the accelerated diffusion in this customized diffusion bonder. Vickers hardness results showed that the hardness values of white gold and red gold were 127.83 and 103.04, respectively, due to solid solution strengthening. In addition, the value at the interface indicated no formation of intermetallic compound around the bonding interface. From the shear strength test, the sample was found not to be destroyed at up to 100,000 gf due to the high bonding strength. Therefore, these results confirm the successful diffusion bonding of 14K white-red golds with a diffusion bonder at a low temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and a short processing time of 180 seconds.

  • Fibers have been used to improve tile flexural performance of reinforced concrete. Therefore many different kinds of fibers have been developed and tested to reinforcing concrete. Basalt fiber is one of the recently developed materials for this purpose. Basalt fiber produced from this basalt raw material has high initial strength and durability. But, the main advantages of the basalt fiber are resistance to high operating temperatures and lower modulus and chemical resistance compared to fiberglass. Also basalt fiber may be consumed as a potential replacement for expensive carbon fibers.

  • Glass ceramic has a high mechanical strength and low sintering temperature. So, it can be used as a thick film substrate or a high strength insulator. A series of glass ceramic samples based on MgO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2-ZrO_2$ (MASZ) were prepared by melting at $1,600^{\circ}C$, roll-quenching and heat treatment at various temperatures from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1,400^{\circ}C$. Dependent on the heat treatment temperature used, glass ceramics with different crystal phases were obtained. Their nucleation behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated with differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vicker's hardness testing machine. With increasing the heat treatment temperature of MASZ samples, their hardness and toughness initially increase and then reach the maximum points at $1,300^{\circ}C$, and begin to decrease at above this temperature, which is likely to be due to the softening of glass ceramics. As the content of $ZrO_2$ in MAS glass ceramics increases from 7.0 wt.% to 13 wt.%, Vicker's hardness and fracture toughness increase from $853Kg/mm^2$ to $878Kg/mm^2$ and $1.6MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $2.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ respectively, which seems to be related with the nucleation of elongated phases like fiber.
