  • Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing technology involving a focused high-power laser or electron beam propagating over the substrate, resulting in melt pool formation while simultaneously supplying metal powder to the melt pool area to deposit the material. DED is performed to repair and strengthen parts in various applications, as it can be easily integrate local area cladding and cross-material deposition. In this study, we characterize stainless steel 316 L parts fabricated via DED based on various deposition conditions and geometries to widen the application of DED. The deposition characteristics are investigated by varying the laser power and powder feed rate. Multilayer deposition with a laser power of 362 W and a powder feed rate of 6.61 g/min indicate a height closest to the design value while affording high surface quality. The microhardness of the specimen increases from the top to the bottom of the deposited area. Tensile tests of specimens with two different deposition directions indicate that horizontally long specimens with respect to a substrate demonstrate a higher ultimate tensile strength and yield strength than vertically long specimens with lower elongation.

  • Aluminum nitride having a dense hexagonal structure is used as a high-temperature material because of its excellent heat resistance and high mechanical strength; its excellent piezoelectric properties are also attracting attention. The structure and residual stress of AlN thin films formed on glass substrate using TFT sputtering system are examined by XRD. The deposition conditions are nitrogen gas pressures of 1 × 10-2, 6 × 10-3, and 3 × 10-3, substrate temperature of 523 K, and sputtering time of 120 min. The structure of the AlN thin film is columnar, having a c-axis, i.e., a <00·1> orientation, which is the normal direction of the glass substrate. An X-ray stress measurement method for crystalline thin films with orientation properties such as columnar structure is proposed and applied to the residual stress measurement of AlN thin films with orientation <00·1>. Strength of diffraction lines other than 00·2 diffraction is very weak. As a result of stress measurement using AlN powder sample as a comparative standard sample, tensile residual stress is obtained when the nitrogen gas pressure is low, but the gas pressure increases as the residual stress is shifts toward compression. At low gas pressure, the unit cell expands due to the incorporation of excess nitrogen atoms.

  • Although achieving a high fracture toughness is essential for designing reliable aircraft components using aluminum alloys, only a limited number of studies have discussed the relationship between microstructure and fracture toughness. Therefore, in this study, the effects of dynamic recrystallization on the fracture toughness of Al7050 extruded alloy were investigated. Because of the temperature deviation in the extruded large component, incomplete dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurred that results into the higher Kernel average misorientation (KAM) and sub-grain structure fraction compare with the complete DRX region. Although incomplete DRX changes KAM and sub-grain fraction, the strength and ductility difference between complete and incomplete DRX regions are not in big difference. The accumulated KAM reduces the plastic zone size, and both cleavage and a lower micro-void fraction are observed in the incomplete DRX region. Based on the different fracture behavior from different DRX behavior, the fracture toughness of the incomplete DRX is lower than that of the complete DRX region. This result implies how a different DRX behavior from temperature variation affects to the fracture toughness of high-strength aluminum alloys.

  • Ordinary Portland cement is a widely favored construction material because of its good strength and durability and its reasonable price; however, spalling behaviour during fire exposure can be a serious risk that can lead to strength degradation or collapse of a building. Geopolymers, which can be synthesized by mixing aluminosilicate source materials such as metakaolin and fly ash, and alkali activators, are resistant to fire. Because the chemical composition of geopolymers controls the properties of the geopolyers, geopolymers with various Si:Al ratios were synthesized and evaluated as fire resistant construction materials. Rejected fly ash generated from a power plant was quantitatively analyzed and mixed with alkali activators to produce geopolymers having Si:Al ratios of 1.5, 2.0, and 3.5. Compressive strength of the geopolymers was measured at 28 days before and after heating at $900^{\circ}C$. Geopolymers having an Si:Al ratio of 1.5 presented the best fire resistance, with a 44% increase of strength from 29 MPa to 41 MPa after heating. This material also showed the least expansion-shrinkage characteristics. Geopolymer mortar developed no spalling and presented more than a 2 h fire resistance rating at $1,050^{\circ}C$ during the fire testing, with a cold side temperature of $74^{\circ}C$. Geopolymers have high potential as a fire resistant construction material in terms of their increased strength after exposure to fire.

  • Recently, the world are preparing for new revolution, called as If (Information Technology), NT (Nano-Technology), and BT (Bio-Technology). NT can be applied to various fields such as semiconductor-micro technology. Ultra precision processing is required for NT in the field of mechanical engineering. Recently, together with radical advancement of electronic and photonics industry, necessity of ultra precision processing is on the increase for the manufacture of various kernel parts. Therefore, in this paper, stability of ultra precision cutting unit is investigated, this unit is the kernel unit in ultra precision processing machine. According to alteration of shape and material about hinge, stability investigation is performed. In this paper, hinge shapes of micro stage in UPCU(Ultra Precision Cutting Unit) are designed as two types, where, hinge shapes are composed of round and rectangularity. Elasticity and strength are analyzed about micro stage, according to hinge shapes, by FE analysis. Micro stage in ultra precision processing machine has to keep hinge shape under cutting condition with 3-component force (cutting component, axial component, radial component) and to reduce modification against cutting force. Then we investigated its elasticity and its strength against these conditions. Material of micro stage is generally used to duralumin with small thermal deformation. But, stability of micro stage is investigated, according to elasticity and strength due to various materials, by FE analysis. Where, Used materials are composed of aluminum of low strength and cooper of medium strength and spring steel of high strength. Through this stability investigation, trial and error is reduced in design and manufacture, at the same time, we are accumulated foundation data for unit control.

  • Lime was the solidifier mostly used at the fields of construction and civil works in the past. however, the development of Portland cement remarkably reduced the use of it. Recently as the concernment on circumstances gets higher, lime wined attention again as an eco-friendly material and was used at earth-using construction. This study examined the physical and chemical capacity of lime complexes with lime capacity improved, and performed fundamental study on the way to concretize by mixing it with earth. As a result, lime complex pressure strength was lower than cement pressure strength but it showed the possibility that its strength was improved by W/B control. The measurement of XRD after paste formation confirmed a compound generated by the reaction of Ca2+ion and Si, Al, and Fe from pozzolan reaction. A earth wall experiment by using lime complexes and earth showed that the higher, WB or the lower the quantity of unit combined materials, the lower the pressure strength was. The maximum pressure strength was maximum 11MPa when the quantity of unit combined materials was 450. It is because the composed earth particles had a high content of micro powder less than silt, so a lot of combination are demanded to secure fluidity. As a result of peptization experiment, after hardening, the material was not dissolved, which informed of the possibility of use as an outer subsidiary material. If the material is hardened by mold formation method, natural hardening crack appears. Cast expresses smart surface quality and enables to design for multiple purpose. The result shows the possibility of construction of low-story structures by using earth wall made of lime complexes and earth.

  • This study was started to investigate why autoclave curing (AC) specimen showed an improvement in compressive strength after immersion in water for a long time, although AC specimen did not showed a high initial compressive strength unlike our expectations. Distilled water and alkaline solutions were used for immersion and three different curing methods were engaged. It was expected that the compressive strength would be improved after immersion in alkaline solutions; however, there was little difference in compressive strength after 21 day immersion because both new crystallites produced by additional geopolymerization and expansion caused by the alkaline aggregate reaction may prevent the additional improvement in compressive strength. It was concluded that in order to secure the long-term commonality and underwater stability of the geopolymers, it is desirable aging geopolymers while immersing it underwater for more than 21 days after curing using an autoclave.

  • Engineered cementitious composites with calcined clay limestone cement (LC3-ECC) as a kind of green, low-carbon and high toughness concrete, has recently received significant investigation. However, the complicated relationship between potential influential factors and LC3-ECC compressive strength makes the prediction of LC3-ECC compressive strength difficult. Regarding this, the machine learning-based prediction models for the compressive strength of LC3-ECC concrete is firstly proposed and developed. Models combine three novel meta-heuristic algorithms (golden jackal optimization algorithm, butterfly optimization algorithm and whale optimization algorithm) with support vector regression (SVR) to improve the accuracy of prediction. A new dataset about LC3-ECC compressive strength was integrated based on 156 data from previous studies and used to develop the SVR-based models. Thirteen potential factors affecting the compressive strength of LC3-ECC were comprehensively considered in the model. The results show all hybrid SVR prediction models can reach the Coefficient of determination (R2) above 0.95 for the testing set and 0.97 for the training set. Radar and Taylor plots also show better overall prediction performance of the hybrid SVR models than several traditional machine learning techniques, which confirms the superiority of the three proposed methods. The successful development of this predictive model can provide scientific guidance for LC3-ECC materials and further apply to such low-carbon, sustainable cement-based materials.

  • Due to the influence of global oil prices, industrial productivity, which oil consumption is high, was significantly reduced. AC type of high-strength PHC piles is being manufactured through twice the steam curing process and this have resulted in a significant rise for product's manufacturing costs. NAC way other types of file manufacturing process has the advantage of reducing manufacturing costs by a turn of the steam curing. Nevertheless, because the initial strength be poor than that of AC method, shipment is being after the curing period of approximately three days. In addition, the growth of the product enhance with curing period can not be avoided, as a result, cost of inventory is acting as the rise. Piles by the AC method is immediately shipped after curing, damaging problems does not occur when they are introduced to the field site (for example, pile on-site). In the case of NAC, however, at least after the curing period of three days and after expressing the strength of 80 MPa or more, they are shipped on the scene. Therefore, NAC type has problems as follows: (1) increase in moderate inventory holding costs with type and (2) breakage in the field due to lack of strength. In this study, for NAC-typed PHC files, mixing characteristics research for the strength development at 1 day equivalent to AC method were conducted and strength characteristics with changes of original materials were evaluated were also identified.
