Laser beam was applied on the boundary of the polyurethane and biodegradable polyacetate polymers. The distributed laser passed through the polyurethane layer and heated the polyacetate layer, then the soften acetate was squeezed thorough the 1mm square slots of polyurethane for the mechanical joining. The surface roughness ranging between $0.28{\mu}m$ and $3.06{\mu}m$ had almost no effect on joining strength, but the optical properties of HD (High Definition) and UHD (Ultra High Definition) mode affected laser beam transmittance. The optimum laser power was found to be between 8watt and 10watt with 500mm/min of scanning speed. The joining boundary was characterized by optical and SEM analysis. Based on the experiment and characterization results, the laser energy was effective for the polymer joining and efficiency of joining.
Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a commonly used conducting transparent oxide film (CTO) used in flat panel display applications. Direct write laser ablation is sometimes employed for ITO patterning and it is important that the substrate material and remaining ITO be affected as little as possible by the laser ablation. In this investigation, femtosecond laser ablation of ITO was studied to identify laser processing parameters which cleanly ablated ITO with a minimum of damage to a glass substrate and surrounding ITO. The Ti:Sapphire chirp pulse amplified femtosecond laser used for the experiments had a wavelength of 775nm and produced pulses with a duration of 150fs at a rate of 2 kHz. Ablation was carried out at a sufficiently high panel scanning speed that single ablation spots could be studied. The pulse energy was adjusted to determine feasible spot diameters and depths which could be ablated into the ITO without damaging the glass substrate. Next, ablation of lines without glass damage was also demonstrated. Experiments were also performed with a high repetition rate (100kHz) femtosecond laser.

Inertia friction welding, a relatively recent innovation in the art of joining materials, is a forge-welding process that releases kinetic energy stored in the flywheel as frictional heat when two parts are rubbed together under the right conditions. In a comparatively short time, the process has become a reliable method for joining ferrous, and dissimilar metals. The process is based on thrusting one part, attached to a flywheel and rotating at a relatively high speed, against a stationary part. The contacting surfaces, heated to plastic temperatures, are forged together to produce a reliable, high-strength weld. Welds are made with little or no workpiece preparation and without filler metal or fluxes. However, In order to obtain a good weld, the determination of the optimum weld parameters is an important problem. Especially, because the amount of the flywheel mass will be determined according to the initial rotating velocity values at the constant thrust load, the initial rotating velocity is an important factor to affect a weld character of the inertia-welded IN713C-SAE8630, which is used for the wheel-shafts of turbine rotors or turbochargers, exhausting valves, etc. In this paper, the effects of initial rotational velocity on a weld character of inertia-welded IN713C-SAE8630 was studied through considerations of weld parameters determination, micro-structural observations and tensile tests. The results are as the following: 1) As initial rotating velocity was reduced to 267 FPM, cracks and carbide stringers were completely eliminated in the micro-structure of welded zone. 2) As initial rotating velocity was reduced and flywheel mass was increased correspondingly, the maximum welding temperatures were decreased and the plastic working in the weld zone was increased. 3) As initial rotating velocity was progressively decreased and carbides were decreased, the tensile strengths were increased. 4) And also the fracture location moved out of the weld zone and the tensile tests produced, the failures only in the cast superalloy IN713C which do not extend into the weld area. 5) The proper initial rotating velocity could be determined as about 250 thru 350 FPM for the better weld character.
Refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors used in home appliances, including refrigerators and air conditioners, are typically hermetic-type reciprocating compressors. Because the shell is sealed by welding, it should be designed to have a semi-permanent life. The energy consumption of a hermetic-type reciprocating compressor is low, but because it operates continuously to maintain a constant temperature inside the refrigerator, it has a certain base load. In this type of compressor, the driving motor operates at a high speed (about 3,000 - 3,600 rpm), which causes valve damage, friction, wear, and high-frequency noise. Many studies have been conducted to solve these problems. To enhance the reliability and efficiency of the reciprocating compressor, the design conditions and operating environment of journal bearings should be considered. Dynamic behavior analysis should be carried out in terms of the discharge pressure. The results showed that the load (discharge pressure) increases in the forward lookup zone and decreases in the backward lookup zone. When the revolution speed is increased, the maximum load decreases in the region where the maximum load operates.

Many pressure vessels for power and industrial plant are fabricated from low alloy carbon steels. The inner sides of pressure vessels are commonly weld-cladded with austenitic stainless steels to minimize problems of corrosive attack. Disbonding cracks are often detected at the transition region of welding interlayer, which is serious problem to reliability of pressure vessels. We have developed C-scan system to high speed inspection of overlay weld using DSP(digital signal processor). This system consists of signal processing parts (oscilloscope, pulser/receiver, digitizer, DSP), scanner, program and position controller. The developed system has been applied to a practical ultrasonic testing in overlay weld, and demonstrated high speed with precision

In this study, the effect of varying the mixture gas during FCA welding was studied for an Atos 60 test piece. To examine the characteristics of welding, the weldability of the material was checked before welding and online monitoring was performed to examine the mechanical properties after welding. The mixture Ar 80% + $CO_2$ 20% at low speed gave very elegant beads with very little spatter. 100% $CO_2$ gave rise to high spatter generation. For Ar 80% + $CO_2$ 20%, the low current region due to the normal short circuits created spatter, which was more than double for 100% $CO_2$. This peak distribution occurred due to the instability of the arc. The tensile test result for Ar 80% + $CO_2$ 20%, Ar 90%+ $CO_2$ 10% and $CO_2$ 100% at 511MPa, 507MPa, and 469MPa showed that the yield strength was improved by 8.1 and 8.9% for 80%+ $CO_2$ 20% and Ar 90%+ $CO_2$ 10%, respectively, compared to 100% $CO_2$. The tensile test result at 622MPa, 609MPa, and 581MPa showed that the yield strength was improved by 7.0% for both the mixture gas compared to 100% $CO_2$.

In this paper, we evaluated the solderability of thin electroless nickel-electroless palladium-immersion gold (ENEPIG) plating layer for fine-pitch package applications. Firstly, the wetting behavior, interfacial reactions, and mechanical reliability of a Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solder alloy on a thin ENEPIG coated substrate were evaluated. In the wetting test, maximum wetting force increased with increasing immersion time, and the wetting force remained a constant value after 5 s immersion time. In the initial soldering reaction, $(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ intermetallic compound (IMC) and P-rich Ni layer formed at the SAC305/ENEPIG interface. After a prolonged reaction, the P-rich Ni layer was destroyed, and $(Cu,Ni)_3Sn$ IMC formed underneath the destroyed P-rich Ni layer. In the high-speed shear test, the percentage of brittle fracture increased with increasing shear speed.

A large variety of pipe flanges are required in the marine and construction industry. Pipe flanges are usually welded or screwed to the pipe end and are connected with bolts. This approach is very simple and has been widely used for a long time; however, it results in high development costs and low productivity, and the products made through this approach usually have safety problems in the welding area. In this research, a new approach for forming pipe flanges based on cold forging and the floating die concept is presented. This innovative approach increases the effectiveness of the material usage and saves time and costs compared with the conventional welding method. To ensure the dimensional accuracy of the final product, finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out to simulate the process of cold forging, and orthogonal experiment methods were used to investigate the influence of four manufacturing factors (stroke of distance, pin die angle, forming of pipe diameter, and speed of the die) and predict the best combination of them. The manufacturing factors were obtained through numerical and experimental studies, which show that the approach is very useful and effective for the forming of pipe flanges and could be widely used in the future.
In this study, effect of laser power on hardness and microstructure of SKD61 Hot Die steel of which surface was melted and hardened with Yb:YAG disk laser was investigated. Beam speed was fixed at 70 mm/sec and distance between them was 0.8 mm about Laser surface melting. The only thing that was changed laser power. Laser powers were 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8 kW. No defect was found under all conditions. As the laser power increased, the penetration depth were deepened and the bead width was also widened. There was no hardness deviation of fusion zone at same laser power and it was higher than that of heat affected zone. In addition, the more laser power increased, the more hardness in fusion zone decreased. Fusion zone was macroscopically dendrite structure. However, core matric in dendrite was lath martensite of 100 nm size. There were $M_{23}C_6$ of 500 nm and the VC and $Mo_2C$ of a nano meters on boundary of dendrite.
The objective of this research was to study the formation of the thick hardened layer with the addition of metal powder(Cu) and ceramics powders(TiC) on the aluminum 5083 alloys by plasma transferred arc process(PTA process) and to characterize the effect of overlaying conditions on the overlaid layer formation. This was followed by investigating the microstructures of the overlaid layers and mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance. The overlaid layer containing copper powder was alloyed and intermetallic compound($CuAl_2$) was formed. The overlaid layers with high melting point TiC powders, however, did not react with base metal. Wear resistance of the alloyed layer was remarkably improved by the formation of $CuAl_2$, precipitate phase, which prevented wear of base aluminum alloys and at higher wear speed, accelerated sliding of the counter part. Wear resistance of the composite layer was also remarkably improved because TiC powder act as a load barring element and Fe debris fragments detached from the counter part act as a solid lubricant on the contact surface.
