A Pilot Study of the Scanning Beam Quality Assurance Using Machine Log Files in Proton Beam Therapy

  • The machine log files recorded by a scanning control unit in proton beam therapy system have been studied to be used as a quality assurance method of scanning beam deliveries. The accuracy of the data in the log files have been evaluated with a standard calibration beam scan pattern. The proton beam scan pattern has been delivered on a gafchromic film located at the isocenter plane of the proton beam treatment nozzle and found to agree within ${\pm}1.0mm$. The machine data accumulated for the scanning beam proton therapy of five different cases have been analyzed using a statistical method to estimate any systematic error in the data. The high-precision scanning beam log files in line scanning proton therapy system have been validated to be used for off-line scanning beam monitoring and thus as a patient-specific quality assurance method. The use of the machine log files for patient-specific quality assurance would simplify the quality assurance procedure with accurate scanning beam data.

Surface Morphology, Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Thin Ag Films

  • Thin Ag films deposited onto $SiO_2/Si$ substrates by DC magnetron sputtering and thereafter annealed ,it temperatures 100-50$0^{\circ}C$ are investigated by scanning tunneling and atomic forte microscopy. It is shown that the film surface topography and microstructure are considerably changed as a result of annealing. To provide a quantitative estimation of the surface topography changes of Ag films the surface fractal dimension was calculated. Elasticity and hardness of the films are studied by a nanoindentation technique. The films are found to have value of elastic modulus close to that of bulk silver while their hardness and yield stress are essentially higher.

Optimization of Dual Layer Phoswich Detector for Small Animal PET using Monte Carlo Simulation

  • As a basic measurement tool in the areas of animal models of human disease, gene expression and therapy, and drug discovery and development, small animal PET imaging is being used increasingly. An ideal small animal PET should have high sensitivity and high and uniform resolution across the field of view to achieve high image quality. However, the combination of long narrow pixellated crystal array and small ring diameter of small animal PET leads to the degradation of spatial resolution for the source located at off center. This degradation of resolution can be improved by determining the depth of interaction (DOI) in the crystal and by taking into account the information in sorting the coincident events. Among a number of 001 identification schemes, dual layer phsowich detector has been widely investigated by many research groups due to its practicability and effectiveness on extracting DOI information. However, the effects of each crystal length composing dual layer phoswich detector on DOI measurements and image qualities were not fully characterized. In order to minimize the DOI effect, the length of each layer of phoswich detector should be optimized. The aim of this study was to perform simulations using a simulation tool, GATE to design the optimum lengths of crystals composing a dual layer phoswich detector. The simulated small PET system employed LSO front layer LuYAP back layer phoswich detector modules and the module consisted of 8${\times}$8 arrays of dual layer crystals with 2 mm ${\times}$ 2 mm sensitive area coupled to a Hamamatsu R7600 00 M64 PSPMT. Sensitivities and variation of radial resolutions were simulated by varying the length of LSO front layer from 0 to 10 mm while the total length (LSO + LuYAP) was fixed to 20 mm for 10 cm diameter ring scanner. The radial resolution uniformity was markedly improved by using DOI information. There existed the optimal lengths of crystal layers to minimize the variation of radial resolutions. In 10 cm ring scanner configuration, the radial resolution was kept below 3.4 mm over 8 cm FOV while the sensitivity was higher than 7.4% for LSO 5 mm : LuYAP 15 mm phoswich detector. In this study, the optimal length of dual layer phoswich detector was derived to achieve high and uniform radial resolution.

A Monochromatic X-Ray CT Using a CdTe Array Detector with Variable Spatial Resolution

  • The CdTe semiconductor detector has a higher detection efficiency for x-rays and $\square$amma rays and a wider energy band gap compared with Si and Ge semiconductor detectors. Therefore, the size of the detector element can be made small, and can be operated at room temperature. The interaction between a CdTe detector and incident x-rays is mainly photoelectric absorption in the photon energy range of up to 100 keV. In this energy range, Compton effects are almost negligible. We have developed a 256 channel CdTe array detector system for monochromatic x-ray CT using synchrotron radiation. The CdTe array detector system, the element size of which is 1.98 mm (h) x 1.98 mm (w) x 0.5 mm (t), was operated in photon counting mode. In order to improve the spatial resolution, we tilted the CdTe array detector against the incident parallel monochromatic x-ray beam. The experiments were performed at the BL20B2 experimental hutch in SPring-8. The energy of incident monochromatic x-rays was set at 55 keV. Phantom measurements were performed at the detector angle of 0, 30 and 45 degrees against the incident parallel monochromatic x-rays. The linear attenuation coefficients were calculated from the reconstructed CT images. By increasing the detector angle, the spatial resolutions were improved. There was no significant difference between the linear attenuation coefficients which were corrected by the detector angle. It was found that this method was useful for improving the spatial resolution in a parallel monochromatic x-ray CT system.

Optimization of Energy Modulation Filter for Dual Energy CBCT Using Geant4 Monte-Carlo Simulation

  • Dual energy computed tomography (DECT) is used to classify two materials and quantify the mass density of each material in the human body. An energy modulation filter based DECT could acquire two images, which are generated by the low- and high-energy photon spectra, in one scan, with one tube and detector. In the case of DECT using the energy modulation filter, the filter should perform the optimization process for the type of materials and thicknesses for generating two photon spectra. In this study, Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulation toolkit was used to execute the optimization process for determining the property of the energy modulation filter. In the process, various materials used for the energy modulation filter are copper (Cu, $8.96g/cm^3$), niobium (Nb, $8.57g/cm^3$), stannum (Sn, $7.31g/cm^3$), gold (Au, $19.32g/cm^3$), and lead (Pb, $11.34g/cm^3$). The thickness of the modulation filter varied from 0.1 mm to 1.0 mm. To evaluate the overlap region of the low- and high-energy spectrum, Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulation is used. The variation of the photon flux and the mean energy of photon spectrum that passes through the energy modulation filter are evaluated. In the primary photon spectrum of 80 kVp, the optimal modulation filter is a 0.1 mm lead filter that can acquire the same mean energy of 140 kVp photon spectrum. The lead filter of 0.1 mm based dual energy CBCT is required to increase the tube current 4.37 times than the original tube current owing to the 77.1% attenuation in the filter.

은유적 과학 용어들에 대한 고등학생들의 인식 및 이해도 조사 (Korean High School Students' Perception and Understanding of Highly Metaphorical Science Terminologies)

  • 본 연구는 오래된 은유적 과학 용어들과 2009 개정교육과정에 새로 포함된 은유적 과학 용어들에 대한 학생들의 인식과 이해정도에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 제7차 과학과 교육과정과 2009 개정 과학과 교육과정에서 은유적 과학 용어들을 선정하였으며, 대상 학생들은 제7차 교육과정에 따른 과학을 학습한 고등학생 176명과 2009 개정 교육과정에 따른 과학을 학습한 학생 175명을 대상으로 조사하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제7차 교육과정과 2009개정교육과정 둘 다에 포함되어 있는 오래된 은유적 용어에 대해서는 개정 교육과정에 의해 학습한 그룹과 7차 교육과정에 의해 학습한 그룹 모두 은유적으로 이해하는 학생보다 교과서의 표현 그대로 또는 부분적으로 과학적으로 이해하는 학생의 수가 많았다. 이 경향은 개정 교육과정에 의해 학습한 그룹과 7차 교육과정에 의해 학습한 그룹 사이에 차이가 거의 없었다. 둘째, 2009 개정 교육과정에 새로 포함된 은유적 과학 용어들에 대해서는 '블랙홀'과 같이 방송 매체나 인쇄매체를 통해 자주 접할 수 있는 개념들은 과학적으로 설명하려고 하는 경향이 어느 정도 있지만 거의 일상생활 속에서 접하지 못하는 은유적 과학 용어들은 학습 후에도 과학적으로 설명하는 것을 매우 어려워했다. 과학에서 오래 사용한 은유적 용어들의 경우에는 과학적인 이해로 변화하는 경향이 높긴 하지만 새로운 은유적 용어들의 경우에는 학생들이 개념을 바르게 이해하기 전에 그 용어가 가지는 은유적인 의미가 학생들로 하여금 과학적 이해를 어렵게 하는 것으로 보인다.

  • Significant progress has been realized in the design and synthesis of light emitting polymers that emit over the entire visible spectrum. However, up to seventy-five percent of charge recombination events can lead to triplet states that decay non-radiatively. Following the pioneering work in the field of small molecule organic light emitting devices, it has been found that solution processible iridium polymer complexes can be used to harness the wasted triplet energy. In this paper, new results with respect to the electrophosphorescence of solution processible tethered iridium polymer derivatives are presented. Furthermore, our approaches to the design of new high triplet energy conjugated polymer hosts are also reported.

Hα 방출선을 통한 Be 항성 원반 (DISK OF Be STAR WITH EMISSION)

  • 서울대학교의 61cm 망원경에 SGS 분광기를 부착하여 4개의 Be 항성에 대한 분광 관측을 수행하였다. 관측으로부터 얻은 각 항성의 $H{\alpha}$ 등가폭은 HD 5394가 $-26.4{\AA}$, HD 10516이 $-27.7{\AA}$, HD 200120이 $-10.2{\AA}$, HD 202904가 $-18.2{\AA}$이다. 이로부터 Grundstrom & Gies (2006)가 제시한 $H{\alpha}$ 방출선의 등가폭과 수소 방출선 영역의 크기 관계를 이용하여 구한 원반의 수소 방출선영역의 크기는 HD 5394가 $6.7{\pm}0.3R_{H{\alpha}}/R_s$, HD 10516이 $8.2{\pm}0.4R_{H{\alpha}}/R_s$, HD 200120이 $6.0{\pm}0.4R_{H{\alpha}}/R_s$, HD 202904가 $4.1{\pm}0.1R_{H{\alpha}}/R_s$이었다. HD 5394와 HD 10516에 대한 결과는 $H{\alpha}$ 간섭 관측으로부터 얻어진 결과와 약 20% 정도 차이가 났다. 항성의 광구에서 발생한 $H{\alpha}$ 흡수선의 등가폭을 정밀하게 보정하고, Grundstrom & Gies (2006)의 모형이 좀더 현실적으로 개선되며 정확한 항성 물리량 (유효온도, 원반 경사각, 원반 전체 크기)을 적용할 경우, 보다 정확한 원반크기를 구할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 61cm 구경의 반사망원경과 범용의 중분산 분광기를 활용한 분광관측으로도 충분히 Be 항성의 원반 변화에 대한 연구를 수행할 수 있다는 것을 제시하고 있다.

MISCLASSIFIED TYPE 1 AGNS IN THE LOCAL UNIVERSE

  • We search for misclassified type 1 AGNs among type 2 AGNs identified with emission line flux ratios, and investigate the properties of the sample. Using 4 113 local type 2 AGNs at 0.02 < z < 0.05 selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, we detected a broad component of the $H{\alpha}$ line with a Full-Width at Half-Maximum (FWHM) ranging from 1 700 to $19090km\;s^{-1}$ for 142 objects, based on the spectral decomposition and visual inspection. The fraction of the misclassified type 1 AGNs among type 2 AGN sample is ~3.5%, implying that a large number of missing type 1 AGN population may exist. The misclassified type 1 AGNs have relatively low luminosity with a mean broad $H{\alpha}$ luminosity, log $L_{H\alpha}=40.50{\pm}0.35\;erg\;s^{-1}$, while black hole mass of the sample is comparable to that of the local black hole population, with a mean black hole mass, log $M_{BH}=6.94{\pm}0.51\;M_{\odot}$. The mean Eddington ratio of the sample is log $L_{bol}/L_{Edd}=-2.00{\pm}0.40$, indicating that black hole activity is relatively weak, hence, AGN continuum is too weak to change the host galaxy color. We find that the O III lines show significant velocity offsets, presumably due to outflows in the narrow-line region, while the velocity offset of the narrow component of the $H{\alpha}$ line is not prominent, consistent with the ionized gas kinematics of general type 1 AGN population.
