This study was designed to investigate effects of relative humidity on the breakthrough of charcoal tubes at a fixed vapor concentration and sampling time during mixed organic vapor sampling. A vapor generator was used to generate three different concentrations of mixed organic vapor and a stainless steel chamber was fabricated and utilized to maintain three different percentages of relative humidity while maintaining a constant temperature. The results were as follows; 1. At high relative humidity, breakthrough of mixed organic vapor occurred quickly at low vapor concentration than at high vapor concentration because of the reduced adsorption volume of charcoal tube due to humidity. 2. Breakthrough by competitive adsorption of vapors onto charcoal tube was observed at first from n-hexane having the lowest boiling point and highest vapor pressure among the three organic vapors investigated, followed by TCE. No breakthrough was observed from toluene under all experimental conditions. 3. For n-hexane, breakthrough was observed after 2 hours of sampling and breakthrough rates were increased as relative humidity increased. For TCE, breakthrough was found after 3 hours of sampling and breakthrough rates by sampling time were increased as vapor concentration increased. 4. The adsorbed amount of mixed organic vapor at breakthrough was shown to have statistically significant correlations with sampling time, relative humidity, and vapor concentration in descending order of correlation. Relative humidity and sampling time for n-hexane and sampling time and concentration for TCE were both statistically significantly correlated. 5. Relative humidity was found to affect the amount of breakthrough of mixed organic vapor and n-hexane. Among three percentages of relative humidity investigated, the amount of breakthrough at 85 % relative humidity was significantly larger than those of at lower percentages of relative humidity. No statistically significant difference was found between 25 % and 55 % relative humidity. 6. The results of multiple regression analysis between breakthrough and relative humidity, vapor concentrations showed that the coefficient of determination of mixed organic vapor was 0.263 and those of n-hexane and TCE were 0.275 and 0.189, respectively. 7. Flow rates of sampling pumps used were found to be affected by relative humidity present. At 25 %, 55 %, and 85 % relative humidity, the relative errors of sampling pump were 1.4 %, 13.4 %, and 18.6 %, respectively. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that high relative humidity could reduce the adsorption volume of charcoal tubes and subsequently increase breakthrough rates. Therefore, to prevent breakthrough when sampling mixed organic vapors, it is suggested that either sampling volume be reduced on the flow rate be lowered so as to minimize breakthrough of the most volatile organic vapor in the mixture. In addition, since the flow rates of a sampling pump can be adversely affected by high relative humidity, it is recommended to use a constant flow mode pump when sampling in the highly humid environment.
Although DLC coatings have good tribological properties, these are dependant on the deposition method, the property of contact surface, and test condition. Humidity, which has little influence on tribological behavior in macro scale, is an important factor of tribological behavior in small devices like MEMS. The objective of this study is to investigate the tribological behavior of DLC coatings with particular attention to their wettability at various humidities. DLC coatings were deposited on Si substrates and tested using a reciprocating friction tester against Si$_3$N$_4$balls at various humidities. The results showed that the tribological behavior of DLC coatings was dependant on relative humidity and wettablility of DLC coatings. Friction coefficient at high relative humidity was higher thar that at low relative humidity. The tungsten-containing DLC coatings had a good wear resistance at low relative humidity whereas DLC coatings derived from argon(Ar)+cesium(Cs) gases showed a good wear resistance at high relative humidity.
In this study, the atmospheric aerosol concentration measured at different relative humidity levels was analyzed. Using an optical particle counter, PM10 and PM2.5 concentration as well as particle size distribution were measured and the relation between these size resolved data and relative humidity was studied. The results showed that mass concentration increases as relative humidity increases. The comparison between PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 showed that the fine particles grow more than coarse particles as relative humidity increases. The results also showed that PM10-2.5 and relative humidity do not show close correlation, which means that the mass increase of PM10 at high relative humidity is mainly due to the growth of PM2.5.
The effect of relative humidity in swine house on swin pleuropneumonia was examined in piglets experimentally infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 5. A total of 20 piglet were grown under 30~40%, 41~50%, 51~64% and 65~80% relative humidity chambers after intratracheal inoculation of A pleuropneumoniae. Characteristic fibrinous pleuropneumonia was observed in the pigs grown at the low relative humidity groups. The detailed results were as follows : 1. Growth performance and environment conditions were lower than high relative humidity groups. 2. Characteristic histopathological findings were fibrinous pleuritis and pneumonia accompanied congestion, hemorrhage, thrombosis and edematous change. 3. Antigenic distribution of inoculated bacterium was found mainly in alveolar macrophages or accumulated foci of macrophages adjacent to necrotic area. 4. Characteristic electron microscopic findings were proliferation of type II pneumocyte with increased lamella bodies and activated alveolar macrophages with pseudopods and widening of interstitium.
This study was carried out to analyze the effects of preservation temperature and relative humidity to the physical properties of corrugated fiberboard boxes for fruit and vegetable packaging. The preservation temperature did not affect severely to physical properties of corrugated fiber-board. Relative humidity was a major cause of corrugated fiberboard box quality deterioration. The burst and compressive strengths of experimental boxes measured with Mullen high pressure tester and tong crush tester were decreased gradually as relative humidity increased from 55% to 75%. But, the strength properties slightly decreased relative humidity at 75% or higher. This tendency was the greater for single wall (SW) corrugated fiberboard box than that for double wall (DW). It is suggested that development of the water-resistant corrugated fiberboard and box be needed that can be used under the condition of low temperature and high moisture content, which are being employed in the cold chain system.
As a vital part of renewable energy and electrical traction, power converters are supposed to have high reliability and good performance. However, power semiconductors produce considerable heat when the power converter works, which results in high junction temperatures that lower the reliability and performance of the power semiconductors. Many studies show that ambient humidity has a significant effect on power devices, but the influence of high humidity on junction temperatures has yet to be studied. Therefore, this paper presents a thermal model for power converters in moist air to obtain the junction temperature increase, which is utilized for the power converter used in a Switched Reluctance Motor System. Simulation results show that the law of converter temperature distribution is independent of the relative humidity in the case of fixed ambient temperature, whereas the temperature in the power converter decreases as the ambient relative humidity increases. These simulation results are validated with the experimental results.
The proliferation of the House Dust Mite(HDM) is affected by temperature, humidity, ventilation, etc. Measuring temperature and humidity was performed at the very location where dust samplings take place and where they live in reality together with temperature and humidity of the ambient of the room. There has been discussion over the key environment factor of HDM survival; absolute humidity or relative humidity. It seems that relative humidity is the more important determinant for the mite's survival through the analysis of previous studies. Temperature, humidity, ventilation rate and Der P1 were measured in 4 flats in London. Mite allergen was detected in every house. Levels of Der P1 varied between <100ng/g and 22,778ng/g. Flats with high relative humidity(>50%) and poor ventilation(<0.5ach) showed higher levels of mite allergen than flats with lower humidity and adequate air change rate. Questionnaire survey was conducted and the result helped to confirm the findings from monitoring of environmental factors and the dust sampling.
In the concrete structures exposed to environmental conditions at early ages, water movement occurs by moisture diffusion in the concrete, and self-desiccation of concrete is also occurred. Thus the internal relative humidity is changed from moisture diffusion and self-desiccation. Thus the internal relative humidity at each location in concrete includes the decrease by self-desiccation. Especially, for high-strength concrete the much unit cement content is used, so that the non-uniform relative humidity distribution is affected form self-desiccation at early ages. In this study, the internal relative humidity in concrete was measured at early ages, and the moisture diffusion component and self-desiccation component of total relative humidity were discussed.
Tuberous roots of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia Poeppig & Endlicher) were stored in different temperature and relative humidity conditions after curing for 30 days. Non-decadent percentage, moisture contents, brix degree and sugars were investigated. Whether temperature and relative humidity were high or not, most of the tuberous root decayed during storage, and the decayed percentage was increased as long as the storage period. In final, only 13% of tuberous roots remain intact at 4$^{\circ}C$, 85% relative humidity condition to be appeared best storage condition in this experiment and all of the tuberous root decayed in other storage conditions after 6 months. Moisture contents decreased a little in the high relative humidity. Even though tuberous roots decayed when stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$ and 2$0^{\circ}C$, most of brix degree reached about 17.0. Fructose, glucose and sucrose contents were 1.65, 1.15 and 0.35% at early storage period, and 1.6, 1.1 and 0.5% after 6 months at 4$^{\circ}C$, 85% relative humidity, respectively. In 3 temperature conditions, fructose and glucose increased for a month and then decreased successively afterwards, but sucrose increased gradually during 6 months. Also in 4 relative humidity conditions, fructose, glucose and sucrose contents were changed with similar to that of in temperature. Changes of fructose and glucose were the same except on 4$^{\circ}C$, 85% relative humidity, that was lower level than moisture of tuberous root.
