The purpose of this study is to examine the status of supply-demand and procurement of the timber used for wooden cultural properties. Because people require the high quality pine timber with cultural assurance and public function for cultural properties, it is priced far higher than ordinary construction timber. The timber consumption was estimated at 18 thousand cubic meter in 1998, of which the large sized log(LSL) with the small end diameter over 30cm consisted of 35.5%, equivalent to 6,300 cubic meter. Majority of the timber was supplied from private forest located in Kangwon-do and national forest, accounting for 65.7% and 16.7%, respectively. Recently the supply more and more relied on timber logged in Kangwon-do. Owing to lack of domestic supply of LSL class timber, part of the volume has been substituted by import log. Most of carpenters working on cultural properties thought that supply of LSL timber would hardly meet the increasing demand for uses of wooden cultural properties. Finally, in order to uphold the tradition of wooden cultural properties, it is necessary to establish a forest management plan which aim at producing large size high quality pine timber.

This study was performed to obtain the basic data for high quality timber production and efficient utilization by investigating the effect of pruning on timber quality of domestic plantation-grown Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.). The results were summarized as follows:Dead knots (unsound knots) in the pruned logs occurred more at upper parts when compared with in non-pruned ones. The numbers of knots on surface in heavily pruned trees were less than those in non-pruned trees, but there was no significant difference in moderately pruned trees. The required period to reveal clear timber surface without defects after pruning increased proportionally with the increase of knot diameter. The yield of clear lumber production increased by about 10% after 14 years from moderate pruning. The quality grade of log improved with more pruning practices. Knots appeared the most important factor in lowering the log grades.
In near future about 500,000 hectares of Japanese larch and pitch pine need thinning to improve crop-tree spacing and reasonable species composition in Korea. Although thinned trees show very little high quality wood, in fact, all the sawed products are suitable for construction and farming materials. Studies on the utilization of thinned small-diameter trees have been implemented in order to increase lumber yield and display the skeleton of farm buildings. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows: 1. According to Korean Conifers Log Grading System, log grade 3 was 87.4 percent in Japanese larch bolts and 95.8 percent in pitch pine bolts from thinned trees. The ability to identify defects was essential for grading logs. 2. Cutting diagrams of sawing were developed for 1-sided sawing, 2-sided sawing and 3-sided sawing by small end diameter class of bolt and cutting sizes also were found to use effectively lumber with wane. 3. Lumber recovery of Pitch pine was a little higher than that of Japanese larch. The maximum lumber yields of pitch pine by sawing patterns were 87.2 percent for 1-sided sawing, 80.8 percent for 2-sided sawing an 64.1 percent for 3-sided sawing, up yield compared with 58.1 percent for 4-sided sawing. The lumber yield of 1, 2 and 3-sided sawing significantly was higher value than that of 4-sided sawing. 4. Lumber was inspected and graded. Lumber quality of diameter class 12cm was a little better than that of diameter class 8cm, but 90 percent of lumber in diameter c1ass 16cm fell into grade 3. The lumber grade was classified by Korean standard grades of confiers lumber. 5. Lumber from 1, 2 and 3-sided sawing was used to build the skeleton of a farm house ($53m^2$) and greenhouse ($60m^2$) in order to display more efficient use of small diameter trees from thinning 6. Total volume of timber for building a farm house was $8.1m^3$ of imported timber. Timber of $7m^3$, 70 percent of total volume would be substituted imported timber for domestic timber.

This study was carried out to scrutinize possibility of manufacturing pitch pine (Pinus rigida) glued laminated timber in order to add values of pitch pine trees. Also, it was investigated to improve bending performance of pitch pine glulam. Pitch pine was imported as one of major plantation species in Korean peninsula. Machine stress rated grades of pitch pine lumber mostly ranged between E7 and E9. which grades were more or less inferior to producing high quality glulam. However, the adhesive properties between pitch pine and pitch pine, and between pitch pine and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), such as shear bond strength, wood failure rate and de-lamination rate of bonded layer submerged in cold and boiling water, were higher than Korean Standard criteria. These properties are essential for manufacturing glulam with single species or multiple species. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of pitch pine glulam exceeded the criterion of Korean Standard for glulam strength grade but modulus of elasticity (MOE) was lower than the criterion. On the other hand, the bending performances (MOR and MOE) were improved 20 percent by mixing with Japanese larch laminar. It is effective to arrange higher quality Japanese larch laminar at the outer layer of glulam for improving bending performances. In conclusion, it is possible to use low quality pitch pine as laminar of structural glulam for adding values of pitch pine.

The study was performed to obtain basic data for high quality timber production and efficient utilization of woods by investigating the effects of thinning on timber quality of domestic Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) planted. The results of this study were summarized as follows ; Comparing the appearance of knot per one meter on log surface, the heavy thinned trees contained less knots than non-thinned ones. And the ratio of dead knots was decreased in heavy thinned trees compared with the non-thinned ones, but the knot size was increased. The inclination angle of dead knot is larger than that of live knot. The crooked logs in heavy thinning plot appeared less than those in non-thinning plot. In heavy thinning plot, the log circle percentage of cross section and the ratio of clear lumber were increased, compared with in non-thinning one. The grade of log was the highest in heavy thinning plot.

Korean pines(Pinus koraiensis) are one of the major plantation species in the Republic of Korea and their natural habitats range from Japan and China to Siberia. The seed of Korean pines, pine nuts, are well know for good food reserves. Due to the global changes which drive the Korean peninsula into the semi-tropical climate, current plantations and natural habitats of Korean pines are faced with the change in the environmental conditions to some extent. To anticipate suitable sites for Korean pines in the future, the location of Korean pines were extracted from the 'Map of suitable trees on a site' that provides the map of suitable trees on a site considering tree species for timber and special uses, and then MaxEnt modelling was used for generating a prediction map on the basis of statistical analysis. As a result, the order of predicted suitable sites were Kangwon-do, Kyungsangbuk-do and Chungcheongbuk-do provinces and sites with high elevation within those provinces were considered most suitable in common. The prediction map of suitable sites for Korean pines presented that suitable sites in the future decreased by 72.2% by 2050's and almost disappeared with a decrease of 92.1% by 2070's on a nationwide scale. In relation to the major production regions of pine nuts in South Korea - Gapyung gun and Yangpyung gun, Kyunggi province and Hongcheon gun, Kangwon province, suitable sites within their areas were predicted to increase by 2050's but become extinct in South Korea by 2070's. To establish a long-term countermeasures against the improvement on forest productivity quality in terms of managing national food security, the result from this study can be considered as a firm basis of predicting plantation suitability. Also, it can be used to predict the changes in supply of forest products and thereby market values in accordance with climate change scenarios.

To prevent illegal timber distribution, DNA markers have been used to identify the species and origin. However, extracting high-quality DNA from timber is difficult because of its physical and chemical properties. In this study, we investigated whether the age of timber tissue influences the yield of DNA extraction and the success rate of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to understand the relationship between the establishment time of the wood annual ring and the extracted DNA concentration (ng/μl), purity (A260/A280), and PCR success rate (%) from pinewood, a major Korean domestic species. According to the results, it was observed that as the distance from the cambium increased, indicating that the tissue was older, the concentration and purity of the extracted DNA decreased significantly. For the trnM-trnV (285 bp) and rpoC1 (298 bp) regions, the PCR success rate was 100%. However, for the rbcL (1.3 kb) region, the PCR success rate was 66.67%. Moreover, PCR amplification of the rbcL region failed at all points older than 30 years. Thus, it is deduced that as time passes, along with the decay of timber cells, DNA is degraded, leading to a decrease in DNA concentration, purity, and PCR success rate. The results of this study are expected to be beneficial for future applications, such as the species identification of timber, providing valuable insights and potential utilization in this field.
The purpose of this study was to identify the species of the woods used in the main building (Daewoongjeon) of Bulgapsa temple in YeongGwang. Eighty eight woods sampled were divided into four parts; pillars(21), rafters(19), purlins(16) and other wood elements(12). Four species were identified; Pinus spp. (hard pines; diploxylon), Abies spp., Quercus spp. and Zelkova serrata Makino. Pillars and corner-angle rafters were mainly Zelkova; however, other wood elements were mostly Pinus spp. The high ratio of Zelkova in this building would be ascribed to the preference of this species to pines owing to its superior quality before the late Chosun Dynasty.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the profitability by selecting Pinus densiflora S. et Z. worthy of ornamental tree from among the cutting timber in the urban development project, and then presents the improvements. The study site is the whole area of Oedong-eup Gyeongju city Gyeongsangbuk-do and subject trees numbers are 2,180 trees. Analysis method is cost analysis because it is used generously pubic land development. In results, at first, in case of forest development currently cutting tree costs 7.3 million Won/ha. and no profit is occurred at all. Secondly, the forward direction order of tree treatments expenses are in sawdust production, selling lumber, selling ornamental tree, and selling ornamental tree, sawdust production, selling lumbered on the aspect of profits by the selling stumpage. Especially, selling trees as ornamental tree costs 127 million Won/ha. which shows the highest profits. Third, the management of ornamental tree pine tree after transplantation from development site costs 5 times less than purchasing the same quality trees. Hence, it is recommended to re-utilize the trees from the development sites to produce a high standard gardens and it also provides the basis for the low carbon green growth society.
The trend and achievements of forest genetics research in abroad were investigated through observation tours and reference work and following facts were found to be important aspects which should be adopted in the forest genetics research program in Korea. Because of world wide recognization on the urgency of taking a measure to reserve some areas of the representative forest type on the globe before the extingtion of such forest type as the results of continuous exploitations of the natural forests to meet the timber demand all over the world, it is urgently needed to take a measure to reserve certain areas of natural stand of Pinus koraiensis, Pinus parviflora, Pinus densiflora f. erectra, Abies koreana, Quercus sp., Populus sp., etc. as gene pool to be used for the future program of forest tree improvement. And the genetic studies of those natural forest of economic tree species are also to be performed. 1. Increase of the number of selected tree for breeding purpose. Because of the fact that the number of plus tree at present is too small to carry out selection program for tree improvement, particularly for the formation of source population for recurrent selection of parent trees of the 2nd generation seed orchard it is to be strongly emphasized to increase the number of plus tree by alleviating selection criteria in order to enlarge the population size of plus trees to make the selection program more efficient. 2. Progeny testing More stress should be placed on carrying out progeny testing of selected trees with open pollinated seeds. And particular efforts are to be made for conducting studies on adult/juvenile correlation of important traits with a view to enable to predict adult performances with some traits revealed in juvenile age thus to save time for progeny testing. 3. Genotype-environment interaction Studies on genotype and environment interaction should be conducted in order to elucidate whether the plus trees selected on the good site express their superiority on the poor site or not and how the environment affect the genotype. And the justification of present classification of seed distribution area should be examined. 4. Seed orchard of broad leaf tree species. Due to the difficulty of accurate comparison of growth rate of neighbouring trees of broad leaf tree species in natural stand, it is recommended that for the improvement of broad leaf trees a seedling seed orchard is to be made by roguing the progeny test plantation planted densely with control pollinated seedlings of selected trees. 5. Breeding for insect resistant varieties. In the light of the fact that the resistant characteristics against insect such as pine gall midge (Thiecodiplosis japonensis U. et I.) and pine bark beetle (Myelophilus pinipera L.) are highly correlated with the amount and quality of resin which are known as gene controlled characteristics, breeding for insect resistance should be carried out. 6. Breeding for timber properties. With the tree species for pulp wood in particular, emphasis should be placed upon breeding for high specific gravity of timber. 7. Introduction of Cryptomeria and Japanese Cypress In the light of the fact that the major clones of Cryptomeria are originated from Yoshino source and are being planted up to considerably north and high elevation in Japan, those species should be examined on their cold resistance in Korea by planting them in further northern part of the country.
