Performance Analysis of the High-side Pressure Reset Algorithm for a $CO_2$ Air-conditioning System ($CO_2$ 에어컨 시스템을 위한 고압재설정알고리즘의 성능분석)

  • In order to protect the environment from the refrigerant pollution, the $CO_2$ may be regarded as one of the most attractive alternative refrigerants for an automotive air-conditioning system. Control methods for a $CO_2$ system should be different because of the unique property of a $CO_2$ as a refrigerant. Especially, the high-side pressure of a $CO_2$ system should be controlled for the efficient operation. The high-side pressure algorithm being composed of the pressure setpoint algorithm and the pressure setpoint reset algorithm was developed. The pressure setpoint algorithm, by using a least square method, was developed. The pressure setpoint reset algorithm, by using a fuzzy logic and by using a proportional logic, was also developed and compared. Simulation results showed that a proportional logic was more practical than a fuzzy logic for the pressure setpoint reset algorithm.

  • This paper deals with the optimum high pressure control algorithm for a transcritical $CO_2$ mobile air-conditioning system with belt-driven compressor to achieve the maximum COP. The experiments were performed to find out the maximum COP conditions with various operating conditions. The experimental results showed that the COP was increased and then decreased with increase of the refrigerant high pressure for the system. Therefore the value of high pressure which has maximum COP could be selected. Furthermore, the strong (linear) relation between the optimum high pressure and the gas cooler outlet temperature was revealed, which suggests the use of a simple controller with only one parameter for the transcritical $CO_2$ cycle.

Especially, the high-side pressure of a $CO_2$ system should be controlled for the effective operation of the system. In this study, the high-side pressure setpoint algorithm was developed by using a neural network and a Lagrange interpolation method. These methods were compared. Simulation results showed that a Lagrange interpolation method was more effective than a neural network in the respect of its easiness of programming and shorter execution time.

  • As part of monitoring technology aimed at verifying the stability of CO2 geologic storage and mitigating concerns about leakage, a method for measuring the pH and alkalinity of high-pressure fluid samples was established to obtain practical technology. pH measurement for high-pressure samples utilized a high-pressure pH electrode, and alkalinity was measured using the Gran titration method for samples collected with a piston cylinder sampler (PCS). Experimental samples, referencing CO2-rich water and CO2 geologic storage studies, were prepared in the laboratory. The PCS controls the piston, preventing CO2 degassing and maintaining fluid pressure, allowing mixing with KOH to fix dissolved CO2. Results showed a 6.1% average error in high-pressure pH measurement. PCS use for sample collection maintained pressure, preventing CO2 degassing. However, PCS-collected sample alkalinity measurements had larger errors than non-PCS measurements, limiting PCS practicality in monitoring field settings. Nevertheless, PCS could find utility in preprocessing for carbon isotope analysis and other applications. This research not only contributes to the field of CCS monitoring but also suggests potential applications in studies related to natural analogs of CCS, CO2-rock interaction experiments, core flooding experiments, and beyond.

  • Inactivation of Leuconostoc sp. isolated from kimchi using carbon dioxide under pressure was investigated in terms of operating parameters in order to evaluate its feasibility as a novel nonthermal process. Inactivation rates increased with increasing pressure, temperature and exposure time, but with decreasing working volume. Microbial reduction of 3 log cycles was achieved within 150 min under a $CO_2$ pressure of $60\;kg/cm^2$ at 30^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that microbial inactivation by the high pressure $CO_2$ was governed essentially by the characteristic of $CO_2$ mass transfer and thus penetration of $CO_2$, into cells was a rate limiting step to determine efficiency of the inactivation process. The experimental results suggested that the high pressure $CO_2$ treatment could be used as one of the effective nonthermal methods for preserving foods.

  • The high-pressure natural refrigerant $CO_2$ is now being evaluated for use in the motor vehicle air-conditioning systems and for several types of unitary equipment. In this study thermodynamic properties of $CO_2$ is compared to those of R-22 and R-134a and the performance characteristics of $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle is analyzed. The results show that the optimum discharge pressure for the cycle performance exists. New design concept for the $CO_2$ refrigeration system should be developed due to the high-operating pressure of itself.

  • This paper presents operating characteristics of internal heat exchanger(IHX) for $CO_2$ geothermal heat pump in the heating mode. Mass flow rate of $CO_2$, inlet temperatures of $CO_2$ at high and low pressure side were selected as main effect factors by using fractional factorial DOE(Design of Experiments). And RSM(Response Surface Method) was used in optimization phase. The results show that heat transfer rate of IHX increases when either inlet temperature of low pressure side decreases or inlet temperature of high pressure side increases. Effectiveness of IHX increases with increasing of inlet temperature of either high pressure side or low pressure side. Finally, performance contour map was provided over the operation ranges of the main design factors.
