This experiment was performed to investigate the characteristics of sonolytic reaction as the basic data for development of the ultrasonic AOP(Advanced Oxidation Process) process from which the refractory organic compounds in aqueous solution which are not readily removed by the existing conventional wastewater treatment processes can be destructed and removed. Trichloroethylene (TCE), benzene, and 2,4-dichlorophenol(DCP) were used as the samples, and their destruction efficiency were measured in terms of experimental parameters of the initial solution concentration, initial solution pH, reaction temperature, acoustic frequencies and intensities. Results showed that the destruction efficiencies of all of the sample materials were above 80% within 120 minutes of sonolytic reaction in all reaction condition. The reaction order of these three compounds was verified as Pseudo first order. From the fore-mentioned results, it can be concluded that the refractory organic compounds could be removed by the ultrasonic irradiation with radicals, such as H$.$and OH$.$causing the high increase of pressure and temperature. Finally, it appears that the new AOP technology using ultrasonic irradiation can be applied to the treatment of refractory substances which are difficult to be decomposed by the conventional methods.
The sewage and wastewater (SAW) are a well-known major source of eutrophication and greentide in freshwaters and also a potential source of thermal pollution; however, there were few approaches to thermal effluent of SAW in Korea. This study was performed to understand the behavioral dynamics of the thermal effluents and their effects on the water quality of the connected streams during winter season, considering domestic sewage, industrial wastewater and hot spring wastewater from December 2015 to February 2016. Sampling stations were selected the upstream, the outlet of SAW, and the downstream in each connected stream, and the water temperature change was monitored toward the downstream from the discharging point of SAW. The temperature effect and its range of SAW on the stream were dependent not only on the effluent temperature and quantity but also on the local air temperature, water temperature and stream discharge. The SAW effects on the stream water temperature were observed with temperature increase by $2.1{\sim}5.8^{\circ}C$ in the range of 1.0 to 5.5 km downstream. Temperature effect was the greatest in the hot spring wastewater despite of small amount of effluent. The SAW was not only related to temperature but also to the increase of organic matter and nutrients in the connected stream. The industrial wastewater effluent was discharged with high concentration of nitrogen, while the hot spring wastewater was high in both phosphorus and nitrogen. The difference between these cases was due to with and without chemical T-P treatment in the industrial and the hot spring wastewater, respectively. The chlorophyll-a content of the attached algae was high at the outlet of SAW and the downstream reach, mostly in eutrophic level. These ecological results were presumably due to the high water temperature and phosphorus concentration in the stream brought by the thermal effluents of SAW. These results suggest that high temperature of the SAW needs to be emphasized when evaluating its effects on the stream water quality (water temperature, fertility) through a systematized spatial and temporal investigation.

In order to reduce salt(as NaCl) contents in food waste and to improve the quality of discharged wastewater produced during the recycling process of food waste for the purpose of compost and feed stuff, a salt reduction process by added water into food waste was developed. The pilot plant with a rotary type salt reduction equipment to manage continuously 0.5 ton food waste per hour was constructed and the efficiency was tested. The amount of added water was calculated by the water content and the efficiency of dewatering process of food waste. Approximately 0.8 liter water per a kilogram of food waste was injected into the reactor in which food waste was pouring simultaneously, then diluted/mixed in a rotary reactor. About 1.1 liter of leachate including added water was generated, but the leachate contained a very high content of organic particles, so most particles were recovered by two step solid-liquid separation process. The first step was a gravitational filtering process using screens with a pore diameter of 1mm, and the second separation process was centrifugal process. Organic quality of food waste which had been desalted was maintained by inputting the entirely recovered organic particles. The efficiency of salt reduction of food waste was estimated by measuring a chloride anion by titration and salinity by a probe. The results by the two different measuring methods were always over 50%, and the quality of final wastewater was improved up to $200mg/{\ell}$ as TS(total solid) by an additional settling process after the two step solid-liquid separation process.

We have investigated the efficacy and efficiency of the used briquets for the sewage treatment in this study. The effluent of wastewater treated by Used Briquets Process (UBP) showed very low values of $BOD_5$, CODcr, and SS (1.1 mg/L, 9.5 mg/L, and 3.8mg/L, respectively), which corresponded to 99%, 92.7%, and 96.3% of removal efficiency to the raw wastewater. The number of total bacteria and E. coli in the effluent water treated by UBP was found to be 9 and 1.2 cfu/ml, respectively, showing the remarkable decrease in number, when compared to that of other sewage treatment plants. In the long period of experiment over 1 year, UBP has also shown the high removal efficiency with less sludge production, and low seasonal fluctuation of the values. This UBP is very environmentally-friendly process in the aspects of recycling used briquets and reducing the sludge production. We think that this process will be useful for both the small-scale sewage treatment and reuse of the effluent water.
In this study, the porous glass media was utilized as biomass carrier, and the optimum characteristics of this new media in fixed bed biofilm process were investigated. The characteristics of media considered here are a void volume fraction, a specific surface area, and surface characteristics of media. The effect of surface roughness and material could be clearly demonstrated by the fact that the porous glass media showed a good potential for biofilm development. This might results from the fact that biofilm is initially formed in the surface cavities of the media is protect from the shear effect. Therefore, the microcolonies are not readily detached by the fluid shear. In the steady state, biofilm formation along the packing bed depth was different from media to media. The specific area was also an important factor for the attachment of microorganism on the media surface. In the case of porous glass media, about $100m^2/m^3$ was enough to obtain a good organic removal efficiency The organic removal efficiency could be improved by increasing the void volume fraction in the reactor, at least 80% was required to obtain a high removal efficiency and prevent clogging. This study looked into the water quality improvement effect of reed (Phragmites communis), bur reed (Sparaganium stoloniferum), Alisma canaliculatum, and Hydrocharis dubia in order to develop native hydrophytes suitable to natural-type wetlands for ecological restoration. The result confirms that the concentration of wastewater was lowered in most plants indicating a possibility in wastewater treatment. Among four species, reed (Phragmites communis) and bur reed (Sparaganium stoloniferum) were most effective in removing a majority of contaminants. Considering that reed (Phragmites communis) is a species that has been used most often among hydrophytes, bur reed (Sparaganium stoloniferum), which is a native species in Korea, showed equivalent level of outstanding effect. In the physiological and growing activity and its relations to water quality improvement effect, each species appeared differently. Reed (Phragmites communis) and bur reed (Sparaganium stoloniferum) were best also in physiological and growing activity. In the case of Hydrocharis dubia, growth was strong in polluted water environment but its physiological activity was poor, indicating that it was under stress. The growth and physiological activity of Alisma canaliculatum were also poor, indicating that it too is being stressed. However, measuring organic contents in the plants of each species shows that the organic contents of Alisma canaliculatum was high. Alisma canaliculatum is a species effective in removing pollutants in water, although it is under stress. A unique phenomenon in removing water pollution with plants is that each species removed different pollutants. In the case of Alisma canaliculatum, which was relatively poor in removing pollution, it was remarkable in reducing nitrogen and phosphorus. Hydrocharis dubia was also effective in eliminating floating matter.

This study examined the feasibility of phosphorus removal from dewatering centrate/filtrate in wastewater treatment by struvite formation. Since dewatering centrate/filtrate obtained after anaerobic digestion contains a high content of ammonia, magesium addition and pH adjustment could remove phosphorous. The optimum magnesium dose, reaction time, settling time, and pH value was found at 2 mol Mg/mol $PO_4^{3-}$, 10 min, 120 min, and 8.5, respectively. A bench-scale continuous operation at the optimum condition showed 80% of total phosphorus removal and 82% of phosphate removal in dewatering centrate. The elemental composition and crystal structure of the chemical precipitate was similar to the reported values of struvite.
Present study was conducted to evaluate the performance of Anaerobic Hybrid Reactor (AHR) combined with two types of anaerobic attached growth reactors at mesophilic temperature ($37^{\circ}C$). The reactor was operated at the influent substrate condition of 19,400 mg/L soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD). The organic loading rate (OLR) and flow rate were varied in the range of $9.5{\sim}22.5kg/m^3$. day and 10.6 ~ 26.0 L/day respectively since start-up was done. The COD removal efficiency of 93 % was measured at the OLR of $14kg/m^3$. day in AHR. However a reduction in removal efficiency to as low as 85 % could have been related to a combined effect of high concentration suspended solids (SS) concentration over 3,800 mg/L. On the other hand the total COD removal efficiencies were measured to be 96.3 % and 96.2 % for AHR+APF and AHR+ADF respectively. The pH of the POME was adjusted to neutral range by using sodium bicarbonate at the initial stages of the reactor feed, later stages pH adjustment was not required as the pH was maintained in the desired neutral range due to self-buffering capacity of the reactor. The reactor proved to be economically acceptable and operationally stable. The biogas was measured to have $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ with a ratio of 35:65, and methane gas production rate was estimated to be $0.17{\sim}10.269L\;CH_4/g\;COD_{removed}$.

In recent years, the sonolysis and electrochemical oxidation process had been shown to be promising for wastewater treatment due to the effectiveness and easiness in operation. This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of sonolytic and electrolytic decomposition as the basic data for development of the wastewater treatment process. Trichloroethylene(TCE) and 2,4- dichlorophenol(2,4-DCP) were used as the samples, and their destruction efficiency were measured with various operating parameters, such as initial solution concentration, initial solution pH, reaction temperature, sonic power and current density. Also, the decomposition mechanism conformed indirectly with the effect of NaHCO3 as a radical scavenger on the decomposition reaction. Thermal decompositon reaction is predominant for TCE but thermal and radical decompositon reactions were dominant for 2,4-DCP. Results showed that the destruction efficiencies of all samples were above 65% within 120 minutes by sonolysis and electrolysis at the same time, and were increased with increasing initial concentration, sonic power and current density. Destruction efficiency of TCE was high in the acidic solution, but 2,4-DCP showed high destruction efficiency in basic solution.
Since polyelectrolytes have been used as conditioners, conventionally only a single polyelectrolyte has been added for sludge conditioning. However, the amount of polyelectrolyte needed for optimal conditioning of sludge is very critical. Overdosing reduces the sludge dewaterbility. In this experimental study, sludge conditioning with single or dual polyelectrolyte was conducted to avoid problems associated with overdosing. Single polyelectrolyte conditioning was conducted by one of cationic, nonionic, and anionic polyelectrolytes. The dual polyelectrolyte conditioning was performed by adding one polyelectrolyte and another one in sequence. The dewaterbility of sludges were measured by SRF(specific resistance to filtration), TTF(time to filter), CST(capillary suction time) respectively. Additionally, parameters such as turbidity, zeta potential, viscosity of conditioned sludges or supematant were measured to evaluate the changed characteristics of sludge by addition of polyelectrolytes. From the experiment results, it was concluded that single polyelectrolyte conditioning had a high probability of overdosing, whereas dual polyelectrolyte conditioning resulted in a better dewaterbility and less chance of overdosing. But, it was also found that dosing sequence in dual conditioning was very important according to the characteristics of sludge. Parameters such as viscosity, turbidity, zeta potential were found to be useful as a means of evaluating sludge dewaterbility.
