Natural astaxanthin mainly derives from a microalgae producer, Haematococcus pluvialis. The induction of nitrogen starvation and high light intensity is particularly significant for boosting astaxanthin production. However, the different responses to light intensity and nitrogen starvation needed to be analyzed for biomass growth and astaxanthin accumulation. The results showed that the highest level of astaxanthin production was achieved in nitrogen starvation, and was 1.64 times higher than the control group at 11 days. With regard to the optimization of light intensity utilization, it was at $200{\mu}mo/m^2/s$ under nitrogen starvation that the highest astaxanthin productivity per light intensity was achieved. In addition, both high light intensity and a nitrogen source had significant effects on multiple indicators. For example, high light intensity had a greater significant effect than a nitrogen source on biomass dry weight, astaxanthin yield and astaxanthin productivity; in contrast, nitrogen starvation was more beneficial for enhancing astaxanthin content per dry weight biomass. The data indicate that high light intensity synergizes with nitrogen starvation to stimulate the biosynthesis of astaxanthin.
This paper describes a vision-based method that effectively recognize a traffic light. The method consists of two steps of traffic light detection and discrimination. Many related studies have used color information to detect traffic light, but color information is not robust to the varying illumination environment. This paper proposes a new method of traffic light detection based on intensity and saturation. When a traffic light is turned on, the light region usually shows values with high saturation and high intensity. However, when the light region is oversaturated, the region shows values of low saturation and high intensity. So this study proposes a method to be able to detect a traffic light under these conditions. After detecting a traffic light, it estimates the size of the body region including the traffic light and extracts the body region. The body region is compared with five models which represent specific traffic signals, then the region is discriminated as one of the five models or rejected as none of them. Experimental results show the performance of traffic light detection reporting the precision of 97.2%, the recall of 95.8%, and correct recognition rate of 94.3%. These results shows that the proposed method is effective.

Two kinds of Haematococcus pluvialis cells (green vegetative cells cultivated under optimal cell culture conditions and red cyst cells maintained under high light stress conditions to induce astaxanthin production) were used to investigate the protein expression profiles by two-dimensional electrophoresis, image analysis, and peptide mass fingerprinting. The cellular accumulation of astaxanthin was evident after exposure to high light intensity and reached the maximum cellular level after 78 h of high light stress. In a 2-D electrophoresis analysis, 22 proteins were upregulated over 2-fold in the red cyst cells when compared with the green vegetative cells and selected for further analysis by chemically assisted fragmentation (CAF)-MALDI-TOF sequencing to identify the protein functions. Among 22 different spots, several key enzymes specific to the carotenoid pathway, including isopentenyl pyrophosphate isomerase (IPP) and lycopene $\beta$-cyclase, appeared in H. pluvialis after exposure to high light intensity. Therefore, IPP and lycopene $\beta$-cyclase would appear to be involved with carotenoid accumulation in the cytoplasm, as these peptides were preferentially upregulated by high light intensity preceding an increase in carotenoid, and only these forms were detected in the red cyst cells.

A machine vision inspection system consists of a camera, optics, illumination, and image acquisition system. Especially a scanning system has to be made to measure a large inspection area. Therefore, a machine vision line scan camera needs a line scan light source. A line scan light source should have a high light intensity and a uniform intensity distribution. In this paper, an offset calibration and slope calibration methods are introduced to obtain a uniform light intensity profile. Offset calibration method is to remove the deviation of light intensity among channels through adding intensity difference. Slope calibration is to remove variation of light intensity slope according to the control step among channels through multiplying slope difference. We can obtain an improved light intensity profile through applying offset and slope calibration simultaneously. The proposed method can help to obtain clearer image with a high precision in a machine vision inspection system.

By using the general theoretical framework proposed recently for treating the fluorescence quenching kinetics, we investigate the effect of light pulse intensity on the decay of fluorescence which follows excitation of fluorophors by the light pulse of very short but finite duration. It is seen that conventional theory breaks down when the exciting light pulse has a pulse width comparable to the fluorescent lifetime and its intensity is very high. We also find that even when the light intensity is not too high, conventional theory may fail in either of the following cases: (i) when the quencher concentration is high, (ii) when there is an attractive potential of mean force between the fluorophor and quencher, or (iii) when the energy transfer from the fluorophor to the quencher may also occur at a distance, e.g., via dipole-dipole interaction. The validity of the predictions of the present theory may thus be tested by fluorescence quenching experiments performed under such situations.
For more esthetic treatments the use of composite in molar areas are increasing. But polymerzation shrinkage that cause marginal leakage and cuspal deflection has been the problems of composites. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of low intensity curing and polishing period on marginal leakage. Cavities were prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of forty five sound extracted human teeth and etching, application of bonding agent and filling of composite was done. Group 1 was light cured at intensity of 600$mW/cm^2$ for 41 seconds and polished. Group 2 was light cured at intensity of 300$mW/cm^2$ for 2 seconds and polished and after polishing it was light cured for 40 seconds at 600$mW/cm^2$. Group 3 was light cured at intensity of 300$mW/cm^2$ for 2 seconds and waited for 5 minutes and after curing at 600$mW/cm^2$ for 40 seconds polishing was done. The specimens were thermocycled at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 1000 cycles and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. Composite-tooth interface was examined under stereobinocular microscope for dye penetration. The results were as follows : 1. Group which were cured at low intensity and polished after curing at high intensity showed less marginal leakage than group which were cured at high intensity for 41 seconds(p<0.05). 2. Marginal leakage between group which were cured at low intensity and polished immediately and group which were cured at high intensity for 41 second were not significantly different. Light curing at low intensity can reduce marginal leakage but polishing immediately after curing at low intensity for short time can affect marginal leakage.

Controlling the light energy and major nutrients is important for high cell density culture of cyanobacterial cells. The growth phase of Anabaena variabilis can be divided into an exponential growth phase and a deceleration phase. In this study, the cell growth in the deceleration phase showed a linear growth pattern. Both the period of the exponential growth phase and the average cell growth rate in the deceleration phase increased by controlling the light intensity. To control the light intensity, the specific irradiation rate was maintained above $10\;{\mu}mol/s/g$ dry cell by increasing the incident light intensity stepwise. The final cell density increased by controlling the nutrient supply. For the control of the nutrient supply, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate were intermittently added based on the growth yield, along with the combined control of light intensity and nutrient concentration. Under these control conditions, both final cell concentration and cell productivity increased, to 8.2 g/l and 1.9 g/l/day, respectively.
The key factors for high-density Haematococcus pluvialis cultures and conditions for astaxanthin induction were examined to maximize astaxanthin production. Light intensity was found to be the most important factor, and thus experiments were found to be the most important factor, and thus experiments were carried out using different light sources and intensities. A high cell density of over 2.7 g/l was obtained at $75{\mu}E/m^2/s$, whereas a much lower cell concentration (<1.0 g/ 1) was obtained with lower light intensities $(15-30{\mu}E/m^2/s$. A high light intensity and the supplement of 470 nm photons had a more dramatic effect on the final astaxanthin concentration and per cell astaxanthin content. A maximum astaxanthin concentration of 6.5 mg/l was obtained at a light intensity of $160{\mu}E/m^2/s$, whereas only 1.3 and 0.7 mg/l were obtained at 30 and $15{\mu}E/m^2/s$, respectively. A supplement of 470 nm photons enhanced the carotenoid and chlorophyll formation.
Plant growth was greatly affected by the spectral distribution and light intensity of artificial lighting sources. In this study, the spectral characteristics of high power sodium (HPS) lamps and metal halide (MH) lamps produced by three different manufacturers were measured. Even though the spectral distribution of HPS lamps with lamp wattage of 250 W and 400 W was very similar, but the spectral light intensity by the manufacturers was different. Difference in the spectral light intensity of MH lamps by the manufacturers was increased with the increasing lamps wattage. Light intensity at the region of blue (B), green (G), red (R) and far-red (FR) light of HPS and MH lamps was also analyzed. HPS lamps showed the light intensity in order of R, FR, B and G light. The ratio of G, B, R and FR to photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) of HPS lamps with the lamp wattage of 250 W was 3.0-3.2%, 5.5-5.9%, 17.3-19.2% and 6.5-7.8%, respectively. For MH lamps, it showed the light intensity in order of R, FR, B, and G. The ratio of B, G, R, and FR to PPF of MH lamps with 250 W was 14.0-15.5%, 22.6-27.5%, 7.5-9.5% and 2.7-4.2%, respectively. HPS and MH lamps with 400 W had a relatively smaller ratio of R and FR to PPF than those with 250 W. HPS lamps showed that the ratio of light intensity of B and FR to R was 0.15-0.28 and 0.36-0.4, respectively. For MH lamps, the ratio of light intensity of B and FR to R was 1.26-2.72 and 0.27-0.56, respectively. From these results, it was concluded that the portion of blue light of MH lamps was higher than those of HPS lamps.
