Effect of retained austenite on rolling contact fatigue of nitrocarburized high-carbon chromium bearing steel has been investigated to develop surface-hardened bearing steel with imprved resistance to rolling contact fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted in elesto-hydrodynamic lubricating conditions at a shaft speed of 5,000rpm, under max, hertzian stress of $492kg/mm^2$. Volume fraction of retained austenite in austenitic nitrocarburized STB2 steel was controlled by tempering at various temperature, $200{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. It was observed using TEM that decomposition of retained austenite during tempering at $250^{\circ}C$ was the highest in quantity, resulted in formation of lower bainite. Rolling contact fatigue life of the specimens with lower bainite, formed by decomposition of retained austenite, was improved in comparison with there of specimens with more amount of retained austenite.
Although wear resistance of material improves with increasing its hardness, it is known that the wear resistance of steel is varied with hardness of counter material. In this context, wear properties of steel must be depended on the difference of hardness between the testpiece and the counter material. In this study, using the pin-on-disc type wear machine, annealed carbon steels were tested against ahoy tool steels with various levels of hardness. Then the changes of wear properties of carbon steel according to the hardness of counter material were investigated and the morphology of worn surface after test were evaluated. The results indicate that if there are no remarkable difference of hardness between them, wear resistance of carbon steel in running-in wear decreases with increasing the hardness of counter material. However, its wear properties at the range of high sliding speed have no relation with hardness of counter material. It is clear that wear properties is influenced by the formation of oxide of steel on their worn surface during wear.
This study presents the experimental results performed to evaluate the effects of Polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) and Polypropylene (PP) fibers on the fresh and residual mechanical properties of the hybrid fiber reinforced SCC before and after the exposure of 250℃, 500℃ and 750℃ temperatures. The compressive and splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture (MOR), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) as well as toughness and weight loss were investigated at different temperatures. PVA and PP fibers were added into SCC mixtures having only macro steel fiber and also having binary hybridization of both macro and micro steel fiber. The results showed that the use of micro steel fiber replaced by macro steel fiber improved the fresh and hardened properties compared to the use of only macro steel fiber. Moreover, it was emphasized that PVA or PP enhanced the residual flexural performance of SCC, generally, while it negatively influenced the workability, weight loss, UPV and the residual strengths with regards to the use of single steel fiber and binary steel fiber hybridization. Compared to the effect of synthetic fibers, PP had slightly more positive effect in the view of workability while PVA enhanced the residual mechanical properties more.
An FFD(flexible fine die) is an embossed mold that consists of a thin plate ranging from 0.6 to 3 mm in thickness. FFDs are primarily used for cutting LCD films and F-PCB sheets. In the high-speed micro-milling process of flexible fine dies, the lubrication and cooling of the cutting edges is very important from the aspect of eco machining and cutting performance. In this paper, a comparative study of tool wear and surface roughness between cutting fluid and hybrid lubrication for eco-machining of FFD was conducted for processes of high-speed machining of highly hardened material (STC5, HRC52). Especially, the incorporated fluid method for eco machining, in which the cutting performances can be simultaneously measured, was introduced. The machining results show that hybrid lubrication, instead of conventional cutting fluid, leads to excellent tool wear and surface roughness and represents the proper conditions for eco micro-machining of flexible fine dies.
Recently, as the interest in improving energy efficiency has grown, the demand for vehicle and machine parts that are resistant in high temperature corrosive conditions and abrasive environments has increased. Pack chromizing treatment of sintered steels is a profitable method that satisfies both corrosion resistance and low friction properties. Since austenitic stainless steels have good corrosion resistance but low mechanical hardness, if they are replaced by sintered steel parts with pack chromizing treatment, all the desirable properties such as low price, easy molding, high hardness, low frictional coefficient, and high corrosion resistance, can be obtained. The higher corrosion resistance of the chromized parts over that of the austenitic stainless steels was acquired by coating chromium carbides and a thin chromium oxides layer on the surface. Moreover, the surface morphology of chromized parts, which were composed of chromium rich phases and hardened chromium carbides by diffusing and alloying, had a peak-and-valley shape so that the dimple effect by the wrinkled morphology and high hardness induced a low friction coefficient.

This study was undertaken to investigate the dry wear characteristics and mechanism of KP-4M steel for plastic molding against SKD 61 hardened by heat treatment. The wear test was carried out under different conditions such as sliding speed, contact pressure, sliding distance, with frictional tester of pin on disc type. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was little in lower speed range below 0.5 m/sec and in higher speed range above 1.5 m/sec,'but wear loss was high in intermediate speed range. The critical sliding speed, which showed the maximum value of specific wear rate, became lower with increased contact pressure. Increasing the contact pressure, the critical sliding distance Lcr which the wear mechanism changes from severe wear to mild wear was increased due to the decrease of oxidation reaction velocity. Through this study we suggested a model of generation and elimination process of wear debris of KP-4M steel for plastic molding.
It is a feature of primary importance for a backing material for circular saw blades having teeth which are tipped with cermet, that the steel has not a too high hardenability in order that the backing material shall not be completely hardened through brazing, welding or grinding, etc. in connection with the finishing operation in the manufacturing of circular saw blade. It is believed that V-(2Mo+W) added steel from this point of view had best conditions. Using V-(2Mo+W) added backing steel, the tool failure can be effectively prevented due to superior damping performance.
Hard turning is a machining process for hardened materials with high surface quality so that grinding process can be eliminated. Therefore, the hard turning is capable of reducing machining time and improving productivity. In this study, hardened AISI4140 (high-carbon chromium steel) that has excellent yield strength, toughness and wear resistance was finish turned using CBN tools. Wear characteristics of CBN tool was analyzed in dry and MQL mixed with nano-particle (Nano-MQL). The dominant fracture mechanism of CBN tool is diffusion and dissolution wear on the rake surface resulting in thinner cutting edge. Abrasive wear by hard inclusion in AISI4140 was dominant on the flank surface. Nano-MQL reduced tool wear comparing with the dry machining but chip evacuation should be considered. A cryogenically treated tool showed promising result in tool wear.
