  • In recent years, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on ecosystems is a serious problem. Since MPs are difficult to recover once they are dispersed into the environment, it is important to remove them at the source. We proposed a magnetic separation of primary MPs (plastics manufactured in minute sizes) sized 10-100 ㎛ that has not been removed in the sewage process, based on the magnetic seeding process. In this study, we used magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent, and conducted magnetic separation experiments in the continuous process using a superconducting solenoidal magnet to investigate the feasibility of practical magnetic separation system of MPs. As a result, 85% separation rate was obtained by continuous separation using high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) with hydrophobically treated magnetite as a magnetic seeding agent.

  • Magnetic separation technology for small paramagnetic particles has been desired for the volume reduction of contaminated soil from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and for the separation of scale and crud from nuclear power plants. However, the magnetic separation for paramagnetic particles requires a superconducting high gradient magnetic separation system applied, hence expanding the bore diameter of the magnets is necessary for mass processing and the initial and running costs would be enormous. The use of high magnetic fields makes safe onsite operation difficult, and there is an industrial need to increase the magnetic separation efficiency for paramagnetic particles in as low a magnetic field as possible. Therefore, we have been developing a magnetic separation system combined with a selection tube, which can separate small paramagnetic particles in a low magnetic field. In the previous technique we developed, a certain range of particle size was classified, and the classified particles were captured by magnetic separation. In this new approach, the fluid control method has been improved in order to the selectively classify particles of various diameters by using a multi-stage selection tube. The soil classification using a multi-stage selection tube was studied by calculation and experiment, and good results were obtained. In this paper, we report the effectiveness of the multi-stage selection tube was examined.

  • Magnetic separators that clean the fluid stream from impurities, protect the installations in numerous industries. This paper introduces a graphical user interface (GUI) which proposes an optimized coil separating magnetic particles with a radius from 1 up to 500 µm. High gradient magnetic fields are employed in an arbitrary user defined fluidic channel which is made of a nonmetallic material. The effects of coil parameters are studied and adjusted to design an optimum coil with a minimum Ohmic loss. In addition, to design the coil scheme based on the particle movements, a mathematical particle-tracing model within the fluid channels has been utilized. In comparison to conventional magnetic separators, this model is reconfigurable by the user, produces a weaker magnetic field, allows for continuous purifying and is easy to install, with high separation efficiency. The presented GUI is simple to use, where the coil's manufacturing limitations can be specified.

  • We have developed the prototypes of superconducting magnetic separation system with high temperature superconductor wire. This separation filter system consist of magnetized matrix SUS430 wire and acrylic frame. This study introduced rolled steel process coolant wastewater applied superconductor HGMS(High Gradient Magnetic Separation). HGMS treatment have acted high efficient method for various wastewater. We have surveyed superconducting magnetic separation technology and reviewed the status of related industries using applied superconductivity. In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS, it was made clear that the fine para-magnetic particles in the wastewater obtained from rolling process of steel can be separated with high efficiency. We investigated the ability of magnetic flock formation, which used inorganic materials and polymer coagulants. We had a purpose to remove SS of coolant at steel factory. Maximum coagulation remove rate of SS 98%. Removing ratio of $Fe_3O_4$ fine particles in wastewater showed over than 99% in the wastewater containing magnetic fines after four times of repetition of separation.

  • This paper presents the characterization of a continuous magnetophoretic microseparator for separating white and red blood cells from peripheral whole blood cells based on their native magnetic properties. The magnetophoretic microseparator separated the blood cells using a high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) method without the use of additives such as magnetic beads or probing materials. Experimental results show that the paramagnetic capture mode microseparator can continuously separate out 93.5% of red blood cells and 97.4% of white blood cells from diluted whole blood, and the diamagnetic capture mode microseparator can continuously separate out 89.7% of red blood cells and 72.7 % of white blood cells by using applying an external magnetic flux of 0.2 T using a permanent magnet.

  • Under the new environmental regulations announced by the government, utilities will have to cut their sulfur dioxide emissions by 60% from 1991 levels by the year of 1999. Sulfur dioxide emissions can be reduced prior to combustion by physical, chemical or biological coal cleaning. The new technology of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) offers the potential of economic separatoins of a variety of fine, weakly magnetic minerals including inorganic sulfur and many ash-forming minerals from coals. In the present paper, magnetic separation tests have been conducted on Korean anthracite and high-sulfur Chinese coal to investigate the feasibility of these techniques for reducing sulfur content from coals. In wet magnetic separation, the studied operating parameters include particle size, pH, matrix types, feed solids content, feed rate, number of cleaning stages and etc. The results shows that for wet separation, 60~70% of total sulfur was removed from coals with over 80% combustible recovery, on the other hand, for dry separation, 47.6% of total sulfur was removed from coals with 75% recovery.

  • The reduction of carbon dioxide emissions becomes a global issue, the main source of carbon dioxide emissions in the Asian region is the energy conversion sector, especially coal-fired power plants. We are working to develop technologies that will at least limit the increase in carbon dioxide emissions from the thermal power plants as one way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Our research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by removing iron oxide scale from the feedwater system of thermal power plants using a superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) system, thereby reducing the loss of power generation efficiency. In this paper, the background of thermal power plants in Asia is outlined, followed by a case study of the introduction of a chemical cleaning line at an actual thermal power plant in Japan, and the possibility of introducing it into the thermal power plants in China based on the results.

  • This study introduced wastewater treatment method by High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS). HGMS treatment was high efficient method for various industrial wastewaters. The system is currently research state, but we have surveyed commercialize the technology for industry. In rolling plate process, coolant wastewater was recycled by sedimentation and sand filter system. It needs several large reservoirs and long time to remove suspended solid (SS) like metal fines and iron oxide in hot rolling plate making process. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant wastewater is improved by using HGMS system, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. We manufactured high temperature superconducting HGMS system that had a purpose to treatment of coolant wastewater in rolling plate process. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel 430 mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system, In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS system, it has been clear that the fine paramagnetic particles in the coolant wastewater obtained from rolling plate process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.

  • A study on the new active type oil-water separation system including the oil-water separation system of magnetic film was carried out. Separation system is composed of several active types of circulating oil separation steps and one magnetic film separation step at final stage. At the magnetic separation step, ferrofluid easily forms a weak magnetic mixture with oil, which is from the water by magnetic field gradient. The vessel has been designed to run at the maximum speed of 25 knots. And two typical forms of SWATH and Catamaran have been studied as a new type of oil recovery vessel.
