  • This paper presents a high-fidelity simulation of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) 3D whole-core Watts Bar benchmark using the UNIST in-house STREAM3D (Steady State and Transient Reactor Analysis code with Method of Characteristics) neutronic code. The benchmark encompasses various whole-core exercises, including single physics problems, multiphysics simulations, and depletion problems. When comparing parameters during the zero-power physics tests, including ITC, DBW, CRW, and criticality tests, STREAM3D results indicate a strong agreement with the measured data and KENO-VI. The comparison with the MC21/CTF code in 3D HFP BOC condition demonstrated strong agreement, with only a 0.42% difference in the normalized radial power distribution, a 0.38 K difference in the RMS of the assembly coolant exit temperature, and a mere 4 ppm difference in CBC.

  • Many applications using satellite data from high-resolution multispectral sensors require an image fusion step, known as pansharpening, before processing and analyzing the multispectral images when spatial fidelity is crucial. Image fusion methods are to improve images with higher spatial and spectral resolutions by reducing spectral distortion, which occurs on image fusion processing. The image fusion methods can be classified into MRA (Multi-Resolution Analysis) and CSA (Component Substitution Analysis) approaches. To suggest the efficient image fusion method for Pleiades and KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) 3 satellites, this study will evaluate image fusion methods for multispectral and panchromatic images. HPF (High-Pass Filtering), SFIM (Smoothing Filter-based Intensity Modulation), GS (Gram Schmidt), and GSA (Adoptive GS) were selected for MRA and CSA based image fusion methods and applied on multispectral and panchromatic images. Their performances were evaluated using visual and quality index analysis. HPF and SFIM fusion results presented low performance of spatial details. GS and GSA fusion results had enhanced spatial information closer to panchromatic images, but GS produced more spectral distortions on urban structures. This study presented that GSA was effective to improve spatial resolution of multispectral images from Pleiades 1A and KOMPSAT 3.

  • Due to ever-growing advancements in computers and relatively easy access to them, many efforts have been made to develop high-fidelity, high-performance, multi-physics tools, which play a crucial role in the design and operation of nuclear reactors. For this purpose in this study, the neutronic Monte Carlo and thermal-hydraulic sub-channel codes entitled MCNP and COBRA-EN, respectively, were applied for external coupling with each other. The coupled code was validated by code-to-code comparison with the internal couplings between MCNP5 and SUBCHANFLOW as well as MCNP6 and CTF. The simulation results of all code systems were in good agreement with each other. Then, as the second problem, the core of the VVER-1000 v446 reactor was simulated by the MCNP4C/COBRA-EN coupled code to measure the capability of the developed code to calculate the neutronic and thermohydraulic parameters of real and industrial cases. The simulation results of VVER-1000 core were compared with FSAR and another numerical solution of this benchmark. The obtained results showed that the ability of the MCNP4C/COBRA-EN code for estimating the neutronic and thermohydraulic parameters was very satisfactory.

  • In this research, we are trying to develop the new hydraulic driven tire roller which is conventionally operated by mechanical transmission system. The reason why we would like to develop it is that tire roller is one of the most useful machine for the road construction site and also imported totally from overseas. In this paper, we conceptualize the new hydraulic system and derive the equations of motion for dynamic analysis. And we investigate system modeling by using DAQ system. Finally, we will design the controller, which can manage the hydraulic circuit of steering and traction mechanism system. The advent of modern high-speed computers coupled with the application of high-fidelity simulation technology can be used to create “virtual prototypes of construction equipment. Tests conducted on these virtual prototypes may be used to augment actual machine testing, thereby lowering costs and shortening time to production. So, we studied tire roller to integrate development technology. In System Analysis, We formulate hydraulic driving system model and hydraulic steering system model. Also, We integrate DAQ system to acquire experimental result in real tire roller equipment.

  • Because individual HRTFs (Head-Related Transfer Functions) vary from a person to a person, a HRTF database has been measured by researchers to investigate the inter-subject variation, and to generate high fidelity virtual sound image. Individual HRTFs not only vary between subjects but also vary due to wearing clothes and glasses in daily life. However, influence of different dressing condition on the measured HRTF was not sufficiently investigated. To quantify the effect of wearing clothes and glasses, dummy's HRTF is measured in an anechoic chamber with various dressing condition, and is evaluated in the sense of spectral distortion. HRTFs are measured both in the median plane and in the horizontal plane. In the median plane, under 6kHz, effect of different wearing clothes and glasses is negligible. Over 6kHz, however, effect of clothing distorts HRTF about 6dB in the sense of spectral distortion. Moreover, at high frequencies, effect of glasses is no longer negligible. In the horizontal plane, at some azimuths, even additional light cloth over the dummy can change the spectrum of HRTF (6dB spectral distortion) especially when sound source is at contralateral positions. Therefore, HRTF measurement with different wearing conditions can broaden the capability of HRTF customization whose technique utilizes a HRTF database.

  • Microsurgery is a precise surgical skill that requires an extensive training period and the supervision of expert instructors. The classical training schemes in microsurgery have started with multiday experimental courses on the rat model. These courses have offered a low threat supervised high fidelity laboratory setting in which students can steadily and rapidly progress. This simulated environment allows students to make and recognise mistakes in microsurgery techniques and thus shifts any related risks of the early training period from the operating room to the lab. To achieve a high level of skill acquisition before beginning clinical practice, students are trained on a comprehensive set of exercises the rat model can uniquely provide, with progressive complexity as competency improves. This paper presents the utility of the classical rat model in three of the earliest microsurgery training centres and the new prospects that this versatile and expansive training model offers.

  • Eyes to the Future (ETF) is a year-long, multi-age mentoring program that supports middle-school girls as they make the transition to high school and make informed choices about the opportunities available to them in high school and beyond, particularly in the field of science and technology. In this study, we explore the tension between fidelity and adaptiveness of an educational innovation by examining how teachers in several different schools used a common set of materials and technology to create "native" implementations of an innovative after-school program, adapted to their local setting. First, we found that the implementation of the program varied across the nine clubs. For example, some clubs put a heavy emphasis on science while others emphasized technology. Then, we identified four different profiles of the variations in implementation based on how close the implementation was to the original program and how much clubs were able to customize the implementation to meet their needs and interests. The results showed that some clubs could be regarded as successful because they were faithful to the original program and others were successful because they could adapt the program for their own context. This implies that the measure for success can be and should be multi dimensional.

  • BARAM system that means 'wind' in Korean has been established as a virtual wind tunnel system for aircraft design. Its aim is to provide researchers with easy-to-use, production-level environment for all stages of CFD simulation. To cope with this goal an integrated environment with a set of CFD solvers is developed and coupled with an highly-efficient visualization software. BARAM has three improvements comparing with previous CFD simulation environments. First, it provides a new automatic mesh generation method for structured and unstructured grid. Second, it also provides real-time visualization for massive CFD data set. Third, it includes more high-fidelity CFD solvers than commercial solvers.

  • The isolation of genomic DNA from mammalian cells is usually performed by cell lysis followed by protein digestion, extraction, and finally, ethanol precipitation of the chromosomal DNA. However, in the case of large sample numbers or when only small amounts of starting materials are available, such conventional methods are not efficient and are cumbersome to be applied. Some alternative methods have been described as well as having commercial DNA isolation kits to be available, nevertheless, there is room left for much improvement. In the present study, a novel method is introduced, where it simplifies conventional protocols by omitting some time-consuming steps such as protease incubation or DNA precipitation and its resuspension. Using paramagnetic silica resins, the genomic DNA was purified over a magnetic field, and the bound DNA was eluted with a low-salt buffer. The fidelity and effectiveness of this novel method was determined by using normal and apoptotic cells as a starting material and then compared to other protocols. The high speed and convenience along with its high efficiency in detecting apoptotic chromosomal DNA will prove this method to be an improved alternative in the isolation of genomic DNA from mammalian cells.
