The catalytic wet oxidations of the wastewater containing azo dye Reactive Black 5(RB5) with heterogeneous catalyst of CuO have been carried out to investigate the effects of temperature($190{\sim}230^{\circ}C$) and catalyst concentration(0.00~0.20 g/l) on the removals of colour and total organic carbon TOC. The wastewater colour was measured with spectrophotometer, and the oxidation rate was estimated with TOC. About 90% of colour was removed during 120 min in thermal degradation of the RB5 wastewater at $230^{\circ}C$, while TOC was not removed at all. As increasing reaction temperature and catalyst concentration, the removal rates of colour and TOC increased in the catalytic wet oxidations of RB5 wastewater. The effects of catalyst were already considerable even at 0.01 g CuO/l, while the removal rates of colour and TOC increased negligibly with increasing the catalyst concentration above 0.05 g CuO/l. The initial destruction rates of the wastewater colour have shown the first-order kinetics with respect to the wastewater colour. TOC changes during catalytic wet oxidations have been well described with the global model, in which the easily degradable TOC was distinguished from non-degradable TOC of the wastewater. The impacts of reaction temperature on the destruction rate of the wastewater colour and TOC could be described with Arrhenius relationship. Activation energies of the colour removal reaction in thermal degradation, wet oxidation, and catalytic wet oxidation(0.20 g CuO/l) of the RB5 wastewater were 108.4, 78.3 and 74.1 kJ/mol, respectively. The selectivity of wastewater TOC into the non-degradable intermediates relative to the end products in the catalytic wet oxidations of RB5 wastewater was higher compared to that in phenol wet oxidations.

A study of the improvement in the impact strength is required to apply Nylon 66/silicate composites as an automobile material. Nylon 66/silicate composites were prepared using a twin screw extruder in case of a silicate treatment by ${\gamma}$-APS (S-silicate) and the addition of an octene ${\alpha}$ olefin grafted by maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH). The chemical structure of the silane treated silicate was measured by Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The chemical reaction was confirmed by the decrease in the FT-IR intensity of the OH stretching vibration. The thermal properties, intercalation structure, and Izod impact strength were measured by DSC, TGA, XRD, and Izod impact tester. There was no significant effect on the degradation temperature of the Nylon66/silicate composite, but the crystallization temperature and crystallinity increased slightly in the case of the Nylon66/silicate composites. This suggests that the additives act as heterogeneous nuclei on the Nylon 66 matrix. The Izod impact test indicated that S-silicate enhanced the impact performance by up to 24%.
The degradation of one of the commercially important hydrogel based on acrylic acid and acryl amide, (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels, by means of ultrasound irradiation and its combination with heterogeneous ($TiO_2$) was investigated. 24 kHz of ultrasound irradiation was provided by a sonicator, while an ultraviolet source of 16 W was used for UV irradiation. The extent of sonolytic degradation increased with increasing ultrasound power (in the range 30-80 W). $TiO_2$ sonophotocatalysis led to complete (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels degradation with increasing catalyst loading, while, the presence of $TiO_2$ in the dark generally had little effect on degradation. Therefore, emphasis was totally on the sonolytic and sonophotocatalytic degradation of hydrogels and a synergy effect was calculated for combined degradation procedures (Ultrasound and Ultraviolet) in the presence of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. $TiO_2$ sonophotocatalysis was always faster than the respective individual processes due to the enhanced formation of reactive radicals as well as the possible ultrasound-induced increase of the active surface area of the catalyst. A kinetics model based on viscosity data was used for estimation of degradation rate constants at different conditions and a negative order for the dependence of the reaction rate on total molar concentration of (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels solution within the degradation process was suggested.
In this study, the synthesis of nitrobenzene was carried out using sulfated silica catalyst. The study delved into H2SO4/SiO2 as a solid acid catalyst and the effect of its weight variation, as well as the use of a microwave batch reactor in the synthesis of nitrobenzene. SiO2 was prepared using the sol-gel method from TEOS precursor. The formed gel was then refluxed with methanol and calcined at a temperature of 600 ℃. SiO2 with a 200-mesh size was impregnated with 98 % H2SO4 by mixing for 1 h. The resulting 33 % (w/w) H2SO4/SiO2 catalyst was separated by centrifugation, dried, and calcined at 600 ℃. The catalyst was then used as a solid acid catalyst in the synthesis of nitrobenzene. The weights of catalyst used were 0.5; 1; and 1.5 grams. The synthesis of nitrobenzene was carried out with a 1:3 ratio of benzene to nitric acid in a microwave batch reactor at 60 ℃ for 5 h. The resulting nitrobenzene liquid was analyzed using GC-MS to determine the selectivity of the catalyst. Likewise, the use of a microwave batch reactor was found to be appropriate and successful for the synthesis of nitrobenzene. The thermal energy produced by the microwave batch reactor was efficient enough to be used for the nitration reaction. Reactivity and selectivity tests demonstrated that 1 g of H2SO4/SiO2 could generate an average benzene conversion of 40.33 %.
Heterogeneously-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous phase trichloroethylene (TCE) over supported metal oxides has been conducted to establish an approach to eliminate ppm levels of organic compounds in water. A continuous flow reactor system was designed to effect predominant reaction parameters in determining catalytic activity of the catalysts for wet TCE decomposition as a model reaction. 5 wt.% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst exhibited a transient period in activity vs. on-stream time behavior, suggesting that the surface structure of the $CoO_x$ might be altered with on-stream hours; regardless, it is probable to be the most promising catalyst. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Very low TCE conversion appeared for $TiO_2$-supported $NiO_x$ and $CrO_x$ catalysts. Wet oxidation performance of supported Cu and Fe catalysts, obtained through an incipient wetness and ion exchange technique, was dependent primarily on the kinds of the metal oxides, in addition to the acidic solid supports and the preparation routes. 5 wt.% $FeO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst gave no activity in the oxidation reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, while 1.2 wt.% Fe-MFI was active for the wet decomposition depending on time on-stream. The noticeable difference in activity of the both catalysts suggests that the Fe oxidation states involved to catalytic redox cycle during the course of reaction play a significant role in catalyzing the wet decomposition as well as in maintaining the time on-stream activity. Based on the results of different $CoO_x$ loadings and reaction temperatures for the decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$ with $CoO_x/TiO_2$, the catalyst possessed an optimal $CoO_x$ amount at which higher reaction temperatures facilitated the catalytic TCE conversion. Small amounts of the active ingredient could be dissolved by acidic leaching but such a process gave no appreciable activity loss of the $CoO_x$ catalyst.

Catalytic wet oxidation of ppm levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) in water has been conducted using $TiO_2$-supported cobalt oxides at a given temperature and weight hourly space velocity. 5% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ might be the most promising catalyst for the wet oxidation at $36^{\circ}C$ although it exhibited a transient behavior in time on-stream activity. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Characterization of the $CoO_x$ catalyst by acquiring XPS spectra of both fresh and used Co surfaces gave different surface spectral features of each $CoO_x$. Co $2p_{3/2}$ binding energy of Co species exposed predominantly onto the outermost surface of the fresh catalyst appeared at 781.3 eV, which is very similar to the chemical states of $CoTiO_x$ such as $Co_2TiO_4$ and $CoTiO_3$. The spent catalyst possessed a 780.3 eV main peak with a satellite structure at 795.8 eV. Based on XPS spectra of reference Co compound, the TCE-exposed Co surfaces could be assigned to be in the form of mainly $Co_3O_4$. XRD measurements indicated that the phase structure of Co species in 5% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst even before reaction is quite comparable to the diffraction lines of external $Co_3O_4$ standard. A model structure of $CoO_x$ present on titania surfaces would be $Co_3O_4$, encapsulated in thin-film $CoTiO_x$ species consisting of $Co_2TiO_4$ and $CoTiO_3$, which may be active for the decomposition of TCE in a flow of water.
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a genetically heterogeneous subtype of Type 2 diabetes characterized (non-insulin-dependent) by early onset, usually before 25 years of age, autosomal dominant inheritance and a primary defect in insulin secretion. Mutations in the glucokinase (GCK) and hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1α genes are the major causes of monogenic forms of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore it is need to study relation with these polymorphisms by diverse analysis methods. The promotor and coding regions inclusive intron exon boundaries of the GCK, HNF-1α genes were examined by PCR-DHPLC (Polymerase Chain Reaction - Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography) and direct sequencing. We extracted DNA from 11 patients and 20 normals. Then we confirmed a single-nucleotide polymorphism using PCR-DHPLC. As results, we identified one mutation (R135G) in GCK gene and two mutations (I27L, S487N) in HNF-1a and at the same time detected mutation in intron 8.

A pitch coating method was proposed for the purpose of improving the electrochemical properties of natural graphite. The synthesis conditions of pitch coating were optimized via measuring electrochemical properties of pitch-coated graphite anodes. As the synthesis temperature increased, the thermal stability was improved in addition to an increase in the softening point and residual carbon weight. However, the synthesis temperature of 430 ℃ resulted in the synthesis of a large amount of NI (NMP Insoluble) due to excessive condensation reaction. As the surface uniformity and coating thickness increased due to high thermal stability, the initial coulombic efficiency and rate capability of the pitch-coated graphite were improved. However, the graphite coated with the pitch containing excessive NI showed lower electrochemical properties than the uncoated graphite. NI had low dispersibility and formed spheres after heat treatment, so it formed the heterogeneous and thicker SEI layer. The optimum conditions for forming a uniform surface and an appropriate coating layer were investigated.

Strong metal-support interaction effect is an important issue in determining the catalytic ac-tivity for heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, we investigated the support effect and the role of organic capping layers of two-dimensional Pt nanocatalysts on reducible metal oxide supports under the CO oxidation. Several reducible metal oxide supports including CeO2, Nb2O5, and TiO2 thin films were prepared via sol-gel techniques. The structure, chemical state and optical property were characterized using XRD, XPS, TEM, SEM, and UV-VIS spectrometer. We found that the reducible metal oxide supports have a homogeneous thin thickness and crystalline structure after annealing at high temperature showing the different optical band gap energy. Langmuir-Blodgett technique and arc plasma deposition process were employed to ob-tain Pt nanoparticle arrays with capping and without capping layers, respectively on the oxide support to assess the role of the supports and capping layers on the catalytic activity of Pt catalysts under the CO oxidation. The catalytic performance of CO oxidation over Pt supported on metal oxide thin films under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2) was tested. The results show that the catalytic activity significantly depends on the metal oxide support and organic capping layers of Pt nanoparticles, revealing the strong metal-support interaction on these nanocatalysts systems.

Nanostructured oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis where their catalytic properties are closely associated with the size and morphology at nanometer level. The effect of particle size has been well decumented in the past two decades, but the shape of the nanoparticles has rarely been concerned. Here we illustrate that the redox and acidic-basic properties of oxides are largely dependent on their shapes by taking $Co_3O_4$, $Fe_2O_3$, $CeO_2$ and $La_2O_3$ nanorods as typical examples. The catalytic activities of these rod-shaped oxides are mainly governed by the nature of the exposed crystal planes. For instance, the predominant presence of {110} planes which are rich in active $Co^{3+}$ on $Co_3O_4$ nanorods led to a much higher activity for CO oxidation than the nanoparticles that mainly exposed the {111} planes. The simultaneous exposure of iron and oxygen ions on the surface of $Fe_2O_3$ nanorods have significantly enhanced the adsorption and activation of NO and thereby promoted the efficiency of DeNOx process. Moreover, the exposed surface planes of these rod-shaped oxides mediated the reaction performance of the integrated metal-oxide catalysts. Au/$CeO_2$ catalysts exhibited outstanding stability under water-gas shift conditions owing to the strong bonding of gold particle on the $CeO_2$ nanorods where the formed gold-ceria interface was resistant towards sintering. Cu nanoparticles dispersed on $La_2O_3$ nanorods efficiently catalyzed transfer dehydrogenation of primary aliphatic alcohols based on the uniue role of the exposed {110} planes on the support. Morphology control at nanometer level allows preferential exposure of the catalytically active sites, providing a new stragegy for the design of highly efficient nanostructured catalysts.
