  • The goal of this study was to understand the reasons for learning about Korean herbal food by examining the actual conditions in a Korean herbal food course during lifestyle education. The general characteristics of the people learning about or working with the food as well as the correlations between the examined factors were analyzed, focusing on each person's dietary lifestyle. We divided the class participants into five dietary lifestyle groups by analyzing their scores. Group 1 was the"taste-seeking type", group 2 was the "quality-seeking type", group 3 was the"economy-seeking type", group 4 was the"convenience and economy-seeking type", and group 5 was the"convenience and health-seeking type". A person with a cooking career was considered to have more experience with Korean herbal food. The highest motivation for Korean herbal food education was for professional reasons, and the class that was most appreciated was learning about Korean traditional herbal foods. The highest satisfaction for the class was based on the instructor's knowledge, followed by food tastes, foodstuffs, educational materials, and the facilities superintendent. Satisfaction with the class tuition and practical utilization was relatively low.

  • The aim of publishing the Korean Pharmaceutical Codex is to update and set specification of essential drugs for humane health. In accordance with speedy development of new drugs and improvement of science and technology, the need of revision of drug specification through the ICH guidelines and discussions between regulatory agency and pharmaceutical industry for the quality assurance of safer and efficient drugs is getting higher. The first edition of Korean Pharmaceutical Codex was published in 1983. Now, the third revision of the Codex is prepared because of the revision of domestic and foreign Pharmacopeias, changes of drug control environment, improvement of science and technology and so on. The aim of 3th edition is to improve the quality of essential drugs through the setting of the required specifications and discussions between the regulatory agency and pharmaceutical industry.

  • Acanthopanax cortex (Acanthopanax sessiliflorum, Araliaceae, KP VIII), an important herbal drug, has been used as tonic, antistress and immuno-enhancing drugs in Korea. And Peiplocae cortex(Periploca sepium, Asclepiadaceae, CP 2000) has been used as cardiotonic, anti-inflammatory, and sedative effect in china. These are called “Namogapi” of Acanthopanax cortex and “Bukogapi” of Periplocae cortex in Chinese herbal market. These herbal medicines are sometimes circulated as same herbal medicine “Ogapi”. • The residual sulfur dioxide in the five herbal medicines dried with burning bituminous coal for 9 hours showed from 339 (Glycyrrhizae Radix) to 1,138 mg/kg (Zingiberis Rhizoma) measured right after drying. The residual sulfur dioxide, from 70.1 to 95.5%, was remained in the above five matrices even after 30 days passed. The marker components concentration in above five herbal medicines like glycyrrhizic acid, betaine et al., were almost same after drying in oven and with burning bituminous coal.

  • Objectives: The two criteria to clarify the toxicity of a herbal diet are well known. Although mechanical analysis of effective ingredients, a western approach, is widely used, the toxicity presence classification through the herbal analysis from a viewpoint of a theory of the herbal medicine properties has been disregarded. This study is for the safe use of a herbal diet through classification and study of toxicity presence in the herbal diet from the view of a theory of herbal medicine properties, one of the methods of Oriental Medicine. Methods: We classified and studied the toxicity presence in four kinds of herbal diets, waters and grains, animals groups, fruits and vegetables, and herbs and trees, excluding mineral natural drugs, of 1,400 kinds of medicines in 16 chapters of Tang-aec-pyeon, Dong-ui-bo-gam, for which the herbal analysis from a viewpoint of the theory of the herbal medicine properties has been used. The criteria of the toxicity presence in the herbal diet have been largely classified into the toxicant and the non-toxicant, and the toxicant is in turn classified into the insignificant, the medium and the significant. The category to clarify herbal diet has been limited to simultaneous utilization of food and natural drugs. The main text is Dong-ui-bo-gam, although diverse other references have also been used. Results: There are toxicant diets: a kind of tortoise meat of animals groups; five kinds of grains part in fruits and vegetables: aengdo, peach, oyat, small apple and gingko nut; and 12 kinds of vegetables part in fruits and vegetables: ginger, oriental cabbage, lettuce, chongbaek, onion, garlic, leek, fern, houttuynia cordata (myeol), pyeongji, geundae, and spinach, which should be prohibited from long-term use both as food and medicine. Conclusion: If herbal diet is used as health food supplements or food, the toxicity presence should be considered on the grounds of an Oriental Medicine theory of the herbal medicine properties.

  • Peucedani Radix is the root of Angelica decursiva Franchet et Savatier (=Peucedanum decursivum Maximowicz) or Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn in several Asian countries. The coumarins contained in Peucedani Radix were quantitatively analyzed using HPLC-DAD to develop a simultaneous determination for the quality control of A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum. For quantitative analysis, four major coumarins contained in these medicinal plants were assessed. Nodakenin (1), nodakenetin (2), praeruptorin A (3), and praeruptorin B (4) were separated with a Phenomenex Luna C18 column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250mm$) under the gradient conditions using distilled water with 0.1% phosphoric acid and acetonitrile with 0.1% phosphoric acid as the mobile phase, at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min and a detection wavelength of 330 nm. This method was fully validated for linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery, and limit of detection and quantification. As a result, A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum were clearly classified by the quantification of four major coumarins in extracts. Also, the pattern recognition analysis based on HPLC indicates that all of the samples were largely clustered into two groups. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish between A. decursiva and P. praeruptorum and contribute to quality control.

  • Objectives: To analyze the growth pattern of the functional food market in Korea, and thus produce essential information in mapping out a strategy for Korean medicine. Methods: A survey of literature or analysis reports about market changes related to functional foods in Korea was undertaken. Results: The Korean functional food market has been growing rapidly, to 1.4 trillion won in 2012 compared to 250 billion won in 2004, which is an annual growth rate of about 14%. In particular, individually-approved functional food is worthy of notice regarding its growth rate and functional position, which is similar to herbal drugs. The expanding growth of functional food affects negatively the decrease of herbal drug industry in Korea to date. Conclusions: To compete with functional foods, the Korean medicine community needs to develop patient-friendly and cost-effective herbal drugs, and strategies to adopt them as therapeutic modalities.

  • This study was conducted to improve sensory quality of Jokbal (Korean Pettitoes) made from frozen pig feet by addition of herbal mixture (glasswort, raspberry and Sansa powders). After adding herbal mixture, lipid oxidation (2-thiobarbituric acid values, TBARS), sensory property, and textural property were determined. Herbs were individually added into cooking soup at concentration of 6% (low concentration treatment, LCT) or 12% (high concentration treatment, HCT) of raw pig feet. Refrigerated pig feet were used as control. Thawed feet without any herbal mixture were used as freezing treatment (FT). TBARS in LCT or HCT were lower than that in FT, and showed the similar to that in Control. Addition of the herbal mixture was effective in improving the flavor and textural property of thawed feet by inhibiting lipid oxidation and protein denaturation in a dose-dependent manner.
