  • In "Creating the Technopolis: High Technology Development in Austin Texas," Smilor, Kozmetsky, and Gibson (1988) make the case that in the mid-1980s Austin was becoming a globally competitive high tech region. Indeed over the years and into 2013, Austin has established its reputation as a leading entrepreneurial and technology center and "talent magnet." Delegations from across the US and worldwide visit Austin to better understand how this central Texas city went from being a state government and university town to become a fast growing, globally competitive, technology hotspot leading the state and nation in job creation. Central to the concept of the Triple Helix and Technopolis Frameworks is the importance of university, business, and government cooperation. This paper gives examples of mechanisms, processes, and metrics on how The University of Texas at Austin; regional technology industry; federal, state, and local government policies; and support groups all contributed to growing and sustaining the Austin Technopolis.

  • A fully integrated small form-factor HBT power amplifier (PA) was developed for UMTS Tx applications. For practical use, the PA was implemented with a well configured bottom dimension, and a CMOS control IC was added to enable/disable the HBT PA. By using helix-on-pad integrated passive device output matching, a chip-stacking technique in the assembly of the CMOS IC, and embedding of the bulky inductive lines in a multilayer substrate, the module size was greatly reduced to 2 mm ${\times}$ 2.2 mm. A stage-bypass technique was used to enhance the efficiency of the PA. The PA showed a low idle current of about 20 mA and a PAE of about15% at an output power of 16 dBm, while showing good linearity over the entire operating power range.

  • Universities are considered important actors and drivers of socio-economic development in the regional innovation eco-system. This article investigates the role Kenyan universities and research institutes play in the development of regional innovation eco-system in the context of triple and Quadruple helices. A model involving Government, Industry, Universities and Society (Public) linkages in the regional innovation eco-system and with Information and Communication Technology as an enabler is used as a framework for analysing the nature of linkages in Kenya. The article uses literature review and case study methods to examine how universities and research institutes can spur the development of the innovation eco-systems. The research question is: what is the role of Kenyan universities and research institutes in spurring innovation ecosystems? Six cases of Kenyan universities and research institutes are considered in the light of Government Policy on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) which is underpinned in Kenyan constitution 2010. The study contributes to the understanding of how deep collaboration among universities, government, research institutes, Science Cities, local, regional, national and international players spurs the creation of world-class innovation ecosystems which can contribute to regional development in developing countries like Kenya.

  • This paper presents two numerical algorithms for registration of cross-sectional medical images such as CT (Computerized Tomography) or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) by using geometrical information from helix or line fiducials. The registration algorithms are designed to be used for a surgical robot working inside cavities of human body. A cylindrical device with a combination of line and helix fiducials were also devised and is supposed to be attached to the end-effector of surgical robot. The algorithms and the fiducial pattern were tested in various computer-simulated situations, and the results indicate excellent overall registration accuracy.

  • An OrthoMTA compacter is made by machining a Ni-Ti alloy wire using tapered helix creep-feed grinding machines. This aim of this study is to find the optimal dressing conditions to sharpen the corner of a cubic boron nitride (CBN) wheel. On the basis of the results of various experiments, it is verified that the most important factors in dressing are the dressing depth and feeding method, whereas the feed rate has less importance for producing a smaller corner R value. The study also finds the optimum dressing depth to reduce the dressing time, a feeding speed and method to stabilize the machining, and the mesh grade for the CBN wheel to make the groove of the compacter deeper.

  • In this study, we have generated fatigue load spectrum that is using to prediction of life time for the helicopter rotor blades. We derive utility helicopter missions for the sake of generating load spectrum. Helix and Felix are standard loading sequences which relate to the main rotors of helicopters with articulated and semi-rigid rotors respectively. We got scale factors which is applied to specific case and it did be obtained through the finite element analysis tools. The fatigue life of the rotor blade is estimated by using MSC/Fatigue. We suggest that generated our fatigue load spectrum in conjunction with small utility helicopter should use to rotor blade fatigue test of the korea helicopter program.

  • Recently introduced WBK(Wire-wounded Bulk Kagome) shows relatively superior mechanical properties compared to other types of PCM. WBK is fabricated by assembling helical wires in 6 directions. Wire being a helix, the wire's geometric properties like pitch and helical radius shows certain geometric characteristics which can play some critical role in setting up an automatic fabrication process. In this study, geometry of WBK is modeled by various transformations of a piece of helical wire and the characteristics of the geometry of an element of WBK truss are discussed. In addition, the roles of pitch and helical radius of wire in optimizing the assembling process are described and the derivation of criteria is attempted to decide proper helical radius which would maintain minimal interference between wires at the crossings.
