  • Purpose: Following tooth extraction, alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) can maintain the dimensions of ridge height and width. Although previous studies have demonstrated the effects of ARP, few if any studies have investigated the compressive force applied during grafting. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different compressive forces on the graft materials during ARP. Methods: After tooth extraction, sockets were filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral with 10% porcine collagen and covered by a resorbable collagen membrane in a double-layered fashion. The graft materials were compressed using a force of 5 N in the test group (n=12) and a force of 30 N in the control group (n=12). A hidden X suture was performed to secure the graft without primary closure. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed immediately after grafting and 4 months later, just before implant surgery. Tissue samples were retrieved using a trephine bur from the grafted sites during implant surgery for histologic and histomorphometric evaluations. Periotest values (PTVs) were measured to assess the initial stability of the dental implants. Results: Four patients dropped out from the control group and 20 patients finished the study. Both groups healed without any complications. The CBCT measurements showed that the ridge volume was comparably preserved vertically and horizontally in both groups (P>0.05). Histomorphometric analysis demonstrated that the ratio of new bone formation was significantly greater in the test group (P<0.05). The PTVs showed no significant differences between the 2 groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: The application of a greater compressive force on biomaterials during ARP significantly enhanced new bone formation while preserving the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the alveolar ridge. Further studies are required to identity the optimal compressive force for ARP.

  • The accurate prediction of snow distributions under the wind action on roofs plays an important role in designing structures in civil engineering in regions with heavy snowfall. Affected by some factors such as building shapes, sizes and layouts, the snow drifting on roofs shows more three-dimensional characteristics. Thus, the research on three-dimensional snow distribution is needed. Firstly, four groups of stepped flat roofs are designed, of which the width-height ratio is 3, 4, 5 and 6. Silica sand with average radius of 0.1 mm is used to model the snow particles and then the wind tunnel test of snow drifting on stepped flat roofs is carried out. 3D scanning is used to obtain the snow distribution after the test is finished and the mean mass transport rate is calculated. Next, the wind velocity and duration is determined for numerical simulations based on similarity criteria. The adaptive-mesh method based on radial basis function (RBF) interpolation is used to simulate the dynamic change of snow phase boundary on lower roofs and then a time-marching analysis of steady snow drifting is conducted. The overall trend of numerical results are generally consistent with the wind tunnel tests and field measurements, which validate the accuracy of the numerical simulation. The combination between the wind tunnel test and CFD simulation for three-dimensional typical roofs can provide certain reference to the prediction of the distribution of snow loads on typical roofs.

  • Objectives This study was aimed to find the significant features of face form according to the Taeeumin and Soyangin by analyzing the three-dimensional face information data. Also, making standard face of the Taeeumin and Soyangin was an object of this study. Methods We collected three-dimensional face data of patients aged between 20~45 years old diagnosed by a specialist of Sasang constitutional medicine. The data were collected using a 3D scanner, Morpheus 3D(Morpheus Corporation, KOREA). Extracting a face feature point total of 64, was set to 332 pieces(height, angle, ratio, etc.) of each variable between feature points. ANOVA test were used to compare the characteristics of subjects according to the Taeeumin and Soyangin. Results When not to consider gender, the Taeeumin and Soyangin were different from the 18 items(3 items in the ear, 9 items in the eye, 1 item in the nose, 1 item in the mouth, 4 items in the jaw). When to consider gender, the Taeeumin and Soyangin men were different from the 6 items(1 item in the ear, 2 items in the nose, 3 items in the face). And the Taeeumin and Soyangin women were different from 17 items(1 item in the ear, 10 items in the eye, 2 items in the nose, 1 item in the mouth, 3 items in the face). Conclusions These results show Taeeumin's face(both men and women) width of the right and left is larger than the length of the top and bottom. Compared to men of Soyangin, men of Taeeumin has greater wings of the nose. Compared to women of Soyangin, women of Taeeumin has longer length of the eye. Soyangin's face(both men and women) length of the top and bottom is larger than the width of the right and left. Compared to men of Taeeumin, men of Soyangin has smaller wings of the nose. Compared to women of Taeeumin, women of Soyangin has more stereoscopic facial features at the top and bottom of the lateral face. Also, by accumulating three-dimensional face data, this study modeled the standard facial features by Taeeumin and Soyangin. These results may be helpful in the development of Sasang constitutional diagnostics utilizing the characteristics of the facial form at later.

  • It is important to know the sensitivity of shrubs to de-icing salt in order to set guidelines for ecological tolerance of evergreen shrubs along roads. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of de-icing salt, calcium chloride($CaCl_2$), on the growth and physiological characteristics of three evergreen shrubs, Euonymus japonica, Rhododendron indicum, and Buxus koreana. Plants were exposed to calcium chloride at different concentrations(weight percentage, 0% as control, 1.0%, 3.0%, and 5.0%) through amended soil maintained from the start of the experiment in October of 2014 until termination in March of 2015. The survival rate, plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf shape index, number of leaves, fresh weight, dry weight, dry matter, root/top ratio, chlorophyll contents, fluorescence, photosynthesis, stomatal conduct, and transpiration rate were recorded. Elevated calcium chloride concentrations decreased plant height, leaf length, leaf width, leaf shape index, fresh weight, dry weight, dry matter, and R/T ratio of the three shrubs. Root growth responded more sensitively than the top growth to salinity. However Euonymus japonica was more tolerant to salt stress than Rhododendron indicum and Buxus koreana. Their growths were totally inhibited by $CaCl_2$ above 3.0% and 1.0% concentrations, respectively. Chlorophyll content, fluorescence, photosynthesis, stomatal conduct, and transpiration rate of both Rhododendron indicum and Buxus koreana were reduced sharply, while Euonymus japonica exhibited mild reductions compared to plants grown in control when increasing calcium chloride was used. Especially, the transpiration rates of Rhododendron indicum, and the photosynthesis and stomatal conduct of Buxus koreana were suppressed as the concentrations of calcium chloride increased. Therefore, Euonymus japonica should be considered as an ecologically tolerant species with proven tolerance to de-icing salt.

  • In domestic construction sites, when installing steel pipe scaffolding and system scaffolding, the guardrails are installed after the installation of the work platforms. This conventional guardrail system (CGS) is always exposed to the risk of falls because the safety railing is installed later. In order to prevent fall disasters during erecting and dismantling scaffolds, it is necessary to introduce the advanced guardrail system (AGS) which installs railings in advance of climbing onto a work platform. For the introduction of the AGS, the structural performance of the system scaffolding applying the CGS and the AGS was compared and evaluated. The structural analysis of the system scaffold (height: 31 m and width: 27.4 m) with AGS confirmed that structural safety was ensured because the maximum stress of each element of the system scaffolding satisfies the allowable stress of each element. As a result of performance comparison of CGS and AGS for each element, the combined stress ratio of vertical posts in AGS was 6.4% lower than that of CGS. In addition, in the case of ledger and transom, the combined stress ratios of AGS and CGS were almost the same. The compression test of the assembled system scaffolding (three-storied, 1 bay) showed that the AGS had better performance than the CGS by 9.7% (8.91 kN). The cross bracing exceeds the limit on slenderness ratio of codes for structural steel design. But the safety factor for the compressive load of the cross bracing was evaluated as meeting the design criteria by securing 3 or more. In actual experiments, it was confirmed that brace buckling did not occur even though the overall scaffold was buckled. Therefore, in the case of temporary structures, it was proposed to revise the standards for limiting on slenderness ratio of secondary or auxiliary elements to recommendations. This study can be used as basic data for the introduction of AGS for installing guardrails in advance at domestic construction sites.

  • The pressure drop characteristics in a rotating two-pass duct with rib turbulators are investigated in the present study. The square duct has a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.7 mm, and $1.5mm{\times}1.5mm$ square $90^{\circ}-rib$ turbulators are attached on the leading and trailing walls. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 10. The distance between the tip of the divider and the outer wall of the duct is $1.0D_h$ and the width of divider wall is 6.0mm or $0.225D_h$. The Reynolds number (Re) based on the hydraulic diameter is kept constant at 10,000 to exclude the Reynolds effect, and the rotation number (Ro) is varied from 0.0 to 0.20. The pressure drop distribution, the friction factor and thermal performance are presented for the leading, trailing and the outer surfaces. It is found that the curvature of the $180^{\circ}$-turn produces Dean vortices that cause high pressure drop in the turn. The channel rotation results in pressure drop discrepancy between leading and trailing surfaces so that non-dimensional pressure drops are higher on the trailing surface in the first-pass and on the leading and side surfaces in the second-pass. In the turning region, Dean vortices shown in the stationary case transform into one large asymmetric vortex cell, and subsequent pressure drop characteristics also change. As the rotation number increases, the pressure drop discrepancy enlarges.

  • Purpose: We report the radiologic and the clinical results for surgical treatment of calcaneal fractures involving the subtalar joint. Methods: We evaluated the findings of radiographs and computed tomographs of 39 patients (40 cases) with intra-articular calcaneal fractures. The fractures were treated with open reduction via an extended lateral approach and internal fixation using a plate. We assessed the radiologic results, such as the $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle, the Gissane angle, and the height/width ratio. We assessed the clinical results based on the critieria of Salama et al. Results: According to the Essex-Lopresti classification, 9 cases were classified as tongue type and 31 cases as joint depression type. According to the Sanders classification, 10 cases were classified as type IIA, 4 cases as IIB, 16 cases as IIIAB, 4 cases as IIIAC, and 6 cases as type IV. The mean preoperative $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle was 7.7, the mean postoperative $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle was 21.1, and the mean last follow-up $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle was 16.8. Clinical results classified as 10 excellent, 13 good, 11 fair, and 6 poor. Conclusion: In the treatment of intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus, open reduction via an extended lateral approach seems to be a useful method in that it can provide direct exposure of the subtalar joint with little morbidity.

  • A leather quality inspection by naked eyes has known as unreliable because of its biological characteristics like accumulated fatigue caused from an optical illusion and biological phenomenon. Therefore it is necessary to automate the leather quality inspection by computer vision technique. In this paper, we present automatic leather qua1ity classification system get information from leather surface. Leather is usually graded by its information such as texture density, types and distribution of defects. The presented algorithm explain how we analyze leather information like texture density and defects from the gray-level images obtained by digital camera. The density data is computed by its ratio of distribution area, width, and height of Fourier spectrum magnitude. And the defect information of leather surface can be obtained by histogram distribution of pixels which is Windowed from preprocessed images. The information for entire leather could be a standard for grading leather quality. The proposed leather inspection system using machine vision can also be applied to another field to substitute human eye inspection.

  • In this paper, we proposed the car license plate extraction and recognition algorithm using both the dynamical thresholding method and the kohonen algorithm. In general, the areas of car license plate in the car images have distinguishing characteristics, such as the differences in intensity between the areas of characters and the background of the plates, the fixed ratio of width to height of the plates, and the higher dynamical thresholded density rate 7han the other areas, etc. Taking advantage of the characteristics, the thresholded images were created from the original images, and also the density rates were computed. A candidate area was selected, whose density rate was corresponding to the properties of the car license plate obtained from the car license plate. The contour tracking method by utilizing the Kohonen algorithm was applied to extract the specific area which included characters and numbers from an extracted plate area. The characters and numbers of the license place were recognized by using Kohonen algorithm. Kohonen algorithm was very effective o? suppressing noises scattered around the contour. In this study, 80 car images were tested. The result indicate that we proposed is superior in performance.

  • Recently as the electronic devices are getting to be more and more smaller, transformers are needed to be micro fabricated using MEMS technology. In this paper transformers have been fabricated and measured by depositing insulation layer to reduce the loss of eddy current and in the middle core a high permeability permalloy was designed based on the turns ratio between primary coil and secondary coil which are 1:1 transformers. (the number of turns of primary coil and secondary coil: 3/3, 5/5, 7/7). The size of the transformers including ground shield are $1mm{\times}1.5mm$, $1mm{\times}1.95mm$, $1mm{\times}2.35mm$ respectively. The line width, pitch and the height of post are 50um. Based on the measured data from the micro fabricated transformers, the 3/3 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed the lowest insertion loss with 1.5 dB at 480 MHz and the 7/7 turns in the primary coil and secondary coil showed the highest insertion loss with 2.5 dB at 280 MHz. Also confirmed that the bandwidth goes up as the number of turns goes down. There was some difference between the actual measured data and the HFSS simulation result. It looks as if it is an error of the difference between oxidation of copper or the permeability of SU-8.
