  • In this study, the coupled effect of electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technology was investigated for removing of heavy metal and organic matter at the same time. The laboratory tests were conducted using specially designed and fabricated electrokinetic and ultrasonic devices. The electrokinetic technique was applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique was applied to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. Diesel fuel and Cd were used as a surrogate contaminant for this test. A series of laboratory experiments involving electrokinetic and electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. An increase in permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test.

  • Recently, several LPG engines for heavy-duty vehicles have been developed, which can replace some diesel engines that are one of a main source for air pollution in urban area. As a preliminary study on the liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLI) system applicable to a heavy duty LPG engine, the engine output and combustion performance were investigated with various combustion chambers and fuel compositions using a single cylinder engine equipped. Experimental results revealed that ellipse, double ellipse and nebula type combustion chamber made a more advantage in breaking swirl flow into small turbulence scale than bathtub type. Especially, performance of nebula type showed most highest efficiency and engine output under lean mixture conditions. An investigation fur various LPG fuel compositions was also carried out, and revealed that the case with 40% propane and 60% butane shows the lowest efficiency at stoichiometry, however, as the mixture became leaner its efficiency increased and became even higher for 100% propane case.

  • In this study, We have investigated leaching characteristics of heavy metals for recycled plastic composites containing EAF(Electric Arc Furnace) dust & EAF slag. EAF dust & EAF slag used that is generated in the 3 steel-making compaines in domestic. The physical and chemical properties of EAF dust & slag was examined by measuring specific surface area. porosity, oil absorption test and chemical wetting analysis etc. Results of total analysis indicated that EAF dust, slag contained significant amount of hazardous metals such as Cu, Pb, Cd and Cr. But, In the leaching test of the recycled plastic composites containing EAF dust, slag by Korean Standard Leaching Procedure, composites shows much lower leaching concentration of heavy metals. It was concluded that the recycled plastic composites containing EAF dust, slag showed good physical and chemical characteristics. This means that the EAF dust, slag can be effectively used as a functional filler.

  • A methodology was developed for evaluation of oxidation stability of base stocks and engine oils. Analytical procedures for both classes of lubricants were based on the ASTM standards D 6186 and/or E 2009. The procedures were applied to a set of engine oils of the SAE 5W-30 specification, and to a set of several hydrocracked and solvent neutral base oils, both with and without addition of antioxidant. A potential of a pressure DSC for diagnostic purposed was also demonstrated by monitoring the engine oil ageing during its operation in heavy-duty engine.

  • Exposed on the sea, the oils are affected by the combined effects of evaporation, solution, chemical oxidation, and biological decomposition. Therefore the samples were taken after artificial weathering, and they were analyzed by gas chromatography for sulfur and hydrocarbons. The measurement results of gas chromatography have shown characteristic patterns. The peaks of the lower hydrocarbons in pollutant oil decreased with time. But the chromatograms for sulfur compound analysed by FPD showed little changes with lapse of time. The hydrocarbon and sulfur compound analysis by gas chromatography can be effectively used for analyzing oils for comparative identification.

  • Three types of experiments, based on the physical properties of oily sludge landfilled soil, were conducted to recover total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from the soil. These experiments included gravity separation, solvent extraction using water, and air floatation. The oil portion was not easily separated from the wet (raw) soil because water molecules aggregate the soil particles, despite the fact that the soil was sandy. However, the drying and grinding processes destroyed the aggregates, causing the TPH recovery to increase to approximately 60% when air floatation was used. The drying process decreased the specific gravity of the soil sample, thereby enhancing the overall recovery of TPH from the soil. Although thermal desorption and/or incineration are common choices for heavily dumped sites, physical separation can recover the oil portion instead of simply removing it.

  • A pitch precursor for a general purpose carbon fiber was prepared by condensation of pyrolized fuel oil (petroleum residual oil) with bromine under nitrogen blowing. such a condensation raised the softening point of the pitch from 4$0^{\circ}C$ to $265^{\circ}$ with a yield of 43%. The pitch precurosr showed an enhanced aromaticity and enlarged molecular size, which led to a reduction in molecular mobility and optical isotropy. The precursor was spun into fibers of $20\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter at a take-up speed of 700m/min. The fiber was stepwise stabilized in air and carbonized in Ar gas to obtain an isotropic carbon fiber. The carbon fiber exhibited tensile strengths of 500-800 ㎫though the fiber was formed via a crude method. The electric conductivity of the carbon fiber was relatively high, 2.2$\times$$10^2$S/cm, sufficient to be used as electrode materials.

  • Norwegian Continental Shelf(NCS) is known as rich oil & gas reservoir and takes one third(1/3) of total continental shelf of Europe.(As of year 2013, Norway ranked third in the world in terms of exporting natural gas.) Until recent low oil price stream, development of oil & gas in NCS was active and perceived as profitable business. This paper describes study of living quarter fire protection for PSA AoC to prepare for likely increasing demands of offshore projects in NCS field.

  • This work aims to simulate three-dimensional heavy oil flow in a reservoir with heater-wells. Mass, momentum and energy balances, as well as correlations for rock and fluid properties, are used to obtain non-linear partial differential equations for the fluid pressure and temperature, and for the rock temperature. Heat transfer is simulated using a two-equation model that is more appropriate when fluid and rock have very different thermal properties, and we also perform comparisons between one- and two-equation models. The governing equations are discretized using the Finite Volume Method. For the numerical solution, we apply a linearization and an operator splitting. As a consequence, three algebraic subsystems of linearized equations are solved using the Conjugate Gradient Method. The results obtained show the suitability of the numerical method and the technical feasibility of heating the reservoir with static equipment.
