  • Low oxygen treatment and heating treatment are used to prevent insects in the field of food science. These eco-friendly control methods can be applied to biological control technique in conservation treatment of organic cultural properties. To evaluate material stability, low-oxygen treatment and low oxygen treatment are applied to wood, pigment, paper and textile that are related to historical wooden buildings. As a result, wood moisture content declined after low oxygen treatment. But decline rate is a little, so it can be expected to turn back original state as time passes. And test result on pigment, paper, textile of chrominance and strength of test materials are stable. But after heating treatment, pigments are separated.

  • The effect of heat treatment and the order of antioxidants treatment toward the thermally oxidized palm oil which has been stored at 60 $^{\circ}C$ was studied. The summerized results of this study are as follows; 1. In the accelerated autoxidation condition, tocopherol showed no distinct effect on the changes of peroxide of value between added tocopherol samples pre-and post treatment by heating. But, rosemary extract showed opposite result. It was supposed that rosemary extract had lower thermostability then tocopherol, because rosemary extract lost it's antioxidative activity during heating process. 2. The changes of acid value and anisidine value were more affected by heat treatment than the order of antioxidant treatment. 3. The oxidative stability measured by OSI showed same tendency as peroxide value. That is, the antioxidative activity of tocopherol in palm oil was more dependent on addition of antioxidants than heat treatment, but the rosemary extract had opposite character for antioxidative action in palm oil.

  • Shoot waste refers to the parts of trees that are not yet optimally utilized. In this study, we aimed to utilize shoot waste of fast-growing teak (FGT) extracted from the community forest in Wonosari, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia by converting it into charcoal, followed by further conversion into activated carbon. This study was conducted with two treatment factors of the activation process, including thermal treatment (750℃, 850℃, and 950℃) and heating period (30, 60, and 90 min), to determine the best condition for the activation process. Our results indicated a significantly effect of the interaction between thermal treatment and heating period on the moisture content, volatile matter content, ash content, fixed carbon content, and adsorption properties of the produced activated carbon. The highest iodine adsorption capacity of activated carbon is 1,102.57 mg/g, which was produced by thermal treatment at 750℃ and heating period of 30 min. This result fulfilled the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 06-3730-1995 quality standard). Furthermore, the quality parameters of the produced activated carbon include: moisture content of 6.13%; volatile matter content of 17.27%; ash content 5.24%; fixed carbon content of 77.49%; benzene removal efficiency of 8.43%; and methylene blue adsorption capacity of 69.66 mg/g. Based on this study, we concluded that shoot waste of FGT could be classified as a prospective material for developing activated carbon for industrial application.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of nighttime ventilation and heating on changes in temperature and humidity, the occurrence of white rust, and growth of standard chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) 'Baekma' in a greenhouse. For the ventilation treatments, the mean nighttime humidity in the control greenhouse, which had a closed side window, was higher (94.5%), but the humidity in the natural and natural+fan ventilation treatments was lower (74.3% and 72.8%, respectively). The rate of occurrence of white rust at 34 days after treatment was 100, 98.3, 75.6, and 43.3% for the control, fan ventilation, natural ventilation, and natural+fan ventilation treatments, respectively. The number of infected leaves and telia were the lowest in the natural+fan ventilation treatment compared with the other treatments. The growth of the chrysanthemum 'Baekma' was significantly suppressed in the control because of the occurrence of white rust and high humidity, while plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, and fresh weight were the greatest in the natural+fan ventilation treatment. For the heating treatments, the mean nighttime temperature of the control (RH 95% heating), which was heating and held at 95% humidity, was $18.4^{\circ}C$, while the temperature of the heating treatment, which was held at 70% relative humidity (RH 70% heating) was $25.8^{\circ}C$. The rate of occurrence of white rust (34.4%), number of infected leaves (0.9), and telia (1.0) were the lowest in the RH 70% heating treatment compared with the other heating conditions. Also, the RH 70% heating treatment showed the best growth in terms of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, and fresh weight. Therefore, the natural+fan ventilation and RH 70% heating treatments were effective for the control of white rust and the growth of standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' in a greenhouse.

  • The effect of heat treatments (boiling or microwave heating) on packaged Tofu was investigated by microbial and physicochemical changes during its storage in order to improve the shelf-life. The shelf-life of the packaged Tofu prepared by acetic acid was found better than that prepared by calcium chloride. As the spoilage of Tofu developed, titratable acidity, amino and ammonia nitrogen contents, and optical density of packaged Tofu suspension were increased. Heat treatment of fresh Tofu in package was effective in lowering the bacterial counts, and extending shelf-life, but there was no significant difference between heating methods. Packaged Tofu prepared from acetic acid and pretreated by heating for 3 minutes kept the shelf-life of 4 days at $30^{\circ}C$, but that without heat treatment spoiled at one day.

  • In order to know the influences of heat treatment of yoghurt on pH, $\beta$-galactosidase and viable cells, yoghurt sample was made by general method with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, and the changes in pH, $\beta$-galactosidase-activity and viable cell-count were determined during heating at 55$^{\circ}C$ and 7$0^{\circ}C$. The pH of yoghurt was not changed when the yoghurt was heated at 7$0^{\circ}C$, but at 55$^{\circ}C$ it decreased slightly. The stability of $\beta$-galactosidase was not affected markedly by heat treatment at 55$^{\circ}C$, but was rapidly inactivated at 7$0^{\circ}C$. The heat treatment of yoghurt at 55$^{\circ}C$ had the halb of viable cell in 1 hour, but the heat treatment at 7$0^{\circ}C$ had considerable effect on viable cell in 5 minutes.

  • The aim of this study is to define the condition of optimal pre-treatment for preferable activated carbon fibers (ACFs), which are based on rayon fibers. This paper shows the ideal path of ACFs preparation process; implies that rayon fibers are pre-treated by various solvents with different times before the heating process. The pre-treated rayon fibers finally turned into desirable rayon fiber-based ACFs through optimal pre-treatment condition by heating processes. The thermal analysis method of pre-treated rayon fibers by thermo-gravimetry analyser (TGA) is an idealized tool, which analyzes the best thermal condition of pre-treatment process. Surface morphologies of resulting rayon fibers based ACFs were examined by scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results of TGA and SEM analyses show that the optimal pre-treatment condition for preparing ACFs was clearly defined, in terms of thermal stability and surface morphology.
