  • Since 1970s, energy-saving design criteria of buildings has been improved through numerous revisions. The purpose of this research is to show how energy saving design criteria affects heating energy consumption of apartments using district heating. Heating energy consumption has been measured in 4 apartments located in Gyeonggi province, Korea from Nov. 1,2007 through Oct. 31, 2008. Collected data was regressed to linear correlations. Heating energy consumptions were calculated for past, present and future energy-saving design criteria, which are outdoor temperature, ventilation and insulation. The results show that present design criteria has reduced heating energy consumption by 15%, and the future criteria will reduce the energy consumption by 42% compared to the criteria before 2001.

  • This study investigates the validity of applying new carbon nanotube (CNT, Carbon Nano Tube) surface heaters, which are applied in combination with various products, to the vessel's materials, and proposes the commercializable products accordingly. In order to actually apply a CNT surface heating system technology to the ship's equipment for the first time in Korea, we carried out the interview of experts in the technology field and the due diligence of the shipyard, and presented the technology road map for the selected three items. Finally, for "Heating System of Ship Fuel Tank" with the highest commercialization potential, we proposed a conceptual diagram to enable the final development of the product through the product analysis.

  • Microwave vacuum heating method (2450 MHz) was used for a low intensity of heat treatments. High vacuum under the microwave heating could bring low temperature condition. Inactivation of ${\alpha}-amylase,\;{\beta}-amylase$, glucoamylase and peroxidase by microwave vacuum heating were investigated at 60-$80^{\circ}C$. It was compared with conventional heating. The heating condition of microwave vacuum heating was confirmed by the destruction of ascorbic acid. When thermal inactivations of the enzymes by microwave vacuum heating were determined, it was less effective than that of conventional method at the initial stage of heating. It was due to a lag time of microwave heating. However, the heating time for complete inactivation of the enzymes by microwave vacuum heating could be reduced comparing with that of conventional heating. Optimum conditions for inactivation of the enzymes could be obtained by microwave vacuum heating.

  • Development of surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold inner surface for improvement of pattern transcription. This study is focused on how to control the parameters related to hot jet impingement. The mass flow rate, the jet temperature and the duration of the impingement are major parameters. The nozzle design and other geometric configurations also affect the heat transfer to the surface. In terms of heat transfer analysis, the most important number is the heat transfer coefficient, which is influenced by the mass flow rate, nozzle design, distance between the nozzle tip and the surface. In summary, several parametric studies using the developed model are conducted to investigate the effects of mass flow rate, jet temperature and Heating Time in Surface heating technology using hot jet impingement onto mold.

  • This study evaluated the effects of heat treatment on antioxidant activity of Rehmannia radix Libosch (RRL). RRL was heated at various temperatures ($110-150^{\circ}C$) for various times (1-5 hr), and the total polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity were investigated. With increased heating temperature and exposure time, total content of polyphenol, flavonoid, as well as antioxidant activity increased. The highest total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were 21.65 and 3.56 mg/g, respectively, these values were occurred after heating for 3 hr at $150^{\circ}C$ (RRL was 5.09 and 0.83 mg/g, respectively). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity was highest value of 83.46% after heating for 3hr at $150^{\circ}C$. The 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) cation radical scavenging activity was highest value of 20.43mg ascorbic acid (AA) eq/g after heating for 2 hr at $150^{\circ}C$. There were highly significant differences in the total polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity among heating temperatures and times (p<0.001), with heating temperature having the greater effect.

  • Hot embossing, one of Nanoimprint Lithography(NIL) techniques, has been getting attention as an alternative candidate of next generation patterning technologies by the advantages of simplicity and low cost compared to conventional photolithographies. A typical hot embossing usually, however, takes more than ten minutes for one cycle of the process because of a long thermal cycling. Over the last few years a number of studies have been made to reduce the cycle time for hot embossing or similar patterning processes. The target of this research is to develop an induction heating apparatus for heating a metallic micro patterning mold at very high speed with the large-area uniformity of temperature distribution. It was found that a 0.5 mm-thick nickel mold can be heated from $25^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$ within 1.5 seconds with the temperature variation of ${\pm}5^{\circ}C$ in 4-inch diameter area, using the induction heating apparatus.

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. At the welded contact region, a 'V'-shaped notch is formed on the surface of the molded part. This 'V'-notch deteriorates not only surface appearance but also mechanical strength of the molded part. To eliminate or reduce weldlines so as to improve the weldline strength, the mold temperature at the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. The present study implements high-frequency induction heating in order to rapidly raise mold surface temperature without a significant increase in cycle time. This induction heating enables to local mold heating so as to eliminate or reduce weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. The effect of induction heating conditions on the weldline strength and surface appearance of an injection-molded part is investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the optimal induction heating conditions of various preform types used for TR forging. The finite element model coupled electro-magnetic and transient heat transfer was employed to evaluate the distribution of temperature at the billet. Power control method was applied to control temperature of preform in induction heating because TR forging is not a continuous process. Power schedule that consists of heating and holding stage was suggested. In heating stage, power is inversely proportional to diameter of preform but the time of heating stage is directly proportional to the diameter of preform. But, in holding stage, the required power for thermal equilibrium per unit volume of the billet decreases with an increase in a diameter of billet due to the increase of efficiency.

  • Laser sealing with glass frits appears a promising technology for sealing various electronic devices (e.g., solar cells, displays) due to its several advantages. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between the composition of glasses and their laser-heating conditions. To allow glass to be sealed using laser heating, CuO was added to two different glass systems, in different amounts. The optical absorptivity of the glass samples was related directly to their CuO content. The laser-heating temperature and the CuO content exhibited a proportional relationship. Furthermore, the heating temperature increased linearly with the laser power used. From these results, we could determine the appropriate laser-heating conditions and CuO content for sealing electronic devices using laser-sealing technology.

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. The weldlines are unavoidable in the cases of presence of holes or inserts, multi-gated delivery systems, significant thickness change, etc.
