The current situation of heating and cooling system of the classrooms of our country is rather poor compared not only to those of the developed nation's classrooms but also in case of other buildings such as financial institutions, office compounds. In winter, especially students have been in hatred state with respect to their health due to the fact that the heater is operated by petroleum. Korea has been heavily dependent on foreign nations for the very fact of importing energy in the form of oil or natural gas. So it is important to conserve energy and the picture with respect to energy remains similar till today as it was in long past periods. The purpose of this study is to contribute actively in energy economy and facilitate towards a healthy school life of students and other institutions proving a system of extracting energy from river water and then converting it into heat which can stand as an effective alternate of expensive oil or gas. Installing oil-stove based heating system at classrooms of school could get considerable attentation in several respects. The proposed heat energy could be collected unlimitedly both in time and in amount. The stable and uninterrupted heat energy from river water, optimally utilizing the typical-regional and geographical characteristics has the potential to be long-lasting in duration, cheap in energy economy and beneficial to health as well.
An experimental study has been peformed on the pool-boiling critical heat flux (CHF) phenomenon on downward -facing plates. The CHF for inclinations of -90$^{\circ}$(horizontally downward position), -88$^{\circ}$, -86$^{\circ}$, -84$^{\circ}$, -60$^{\circ}$ and -40$^{\circ}$ were measured using plate-type test sections of 20mm 200mm and 25mm 200mm in a pool of saturated water under atmospheric pressure. The measured CHF was lower for the wider test section and decreased as its orientation approached to the horizontally downward position. The lower CHF can be attributable to the increased difficulty for the bubbles in escaping from the heater surface. When compared with the previous works, the overall trends were similar; however, a transition angle, at which the decrease rate in the CHF was changed, was observed in the vicinity of -80$^{\circ}$.

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) methods are conventional analytical methods to analyze water quality. Both of these methods are technically indirect measurement methods, require complicated preconditions, and are time-consuming. On the other hand, the total organic carbon (TOC) method is a direct and fast measurement method which is more intuitive and accurate than the BOD and COD methods. However, general TOC analysis methods involve complicated processes and high power consumption owing to the process of phase transition from liquid to gas by a high-temperature heater. Furthermore, periodic consumables are also required for the removal of inorganic carbon (IC). Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is one of the most suitable photocatalysts for simple processes. Its usage involves low power consumption because it only reacts with the organic carbon (OC) without the requirement of any other reagents and extra processes. We investigated a TiO2 photocatalyst-based TOC analysis for simple and affordable products. TiO2-coated fiber substrate maintained under carbon included water was exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation of wavelength 365 nm. This method is suitable for the real-time monitoring of water pollution because of its fast reaction time. Its linear property is also sufficient to match the real value.
This study assessed the measurement errors and improvement of the spatial resolution through miniaturization of the plate thermometer used to measure the heat flux in a fire environment. As a result, the heat loss to the side of plate thermometer was found to have a significant influence on the measurement error through analysis of the measurement values according to the thickness and density change to the insulation installed on the back side of the plate. Based on the existing 10 cm square shape, it was also confirmed that the 3 cm size plate thermometer could measure the heat flux with satisfactory accuracy through miniaturization. These results are expected to be useful for accurate measurements of the heat flux at local locations in a fire environment.

The thermal design of the Lunar Terrain Imager (LUTI) on the Korean Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) was performed and the soundness of the thermal design was verified by thermal analysis. The thermal environment of the lunar mission orbit should be reflected in the thermal design because the IR radiation of the lunar surface is important, unlike the earth orbit. The components or modules exposed to the outside of the satellite are insulated with MLI as much as possible, but the camera tube and the radiator are functionally exposed, so the thermal shield using the concept of radiation shape factor is mounted on the front to mitigate IR radiation. The IR emissivity is important in the front side of the radiator that receives little solar radiation, and components that are susceptible to thermal deformation such as the tube use a radiation heater to minimize the temperature gradient. Through the investigation of computational results, it was confirmed that the thermal design of LUTI is stable in various situations.

In this paper, the required amount of heat for an anti-icing system of a Flush Air Data Sensing(FADS) system is predicted. For an efficient prediction during the early stage of a design process, a handbook method is used. A program of which inputs are flight conditions is developed to predict the required amount of heat. A CFD analysis is conducted to compute the water catch efficiency which is one of the core parameters used in the handbook method. Kriging method, one of well-known regression mothods, is utilized to construct a surface contour database to evaluate impingements of droplets. To predict the trajectories of droplets, the database of a flow field around the surface is built using Kriging method as well.
This study presents an experimental investigation of the wear and oxidation of the bristles of a brush seal in a super-heated steam environment. We construct a model reflecting normal force and radial interference to predict the amount of wear. To monitor the volume loss of the bristle induced by the swirl phenomenon of the rotor, we measure the clearance between the rotor and the brush seal by using a non-contact 3-D device. We calculate the area by using the area-wise measurement method. Considering the obvious brush seal wear variables, we use two disks with different roughness($Ra=0.1{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$) to determine the effect of roughness on wear. Considering an actual steam turbine, we utilize a steam generator and super-heater to generate a working fluid (0.95MPa, 523.15K) that has high kinetic energy. We observe the abrasion of the bristles in the hot steam environment through a scanning electron microscope image. This study also conducted energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis for a qualitative evaluation of local chemistry. The results indicate that the wear and elimination of bristles occur on the disk with high roughness, and the weight increases due to oxidation. Furthermore these results, reveal that the bristle oxidation is accelerated more under super-heated steam conditions than under conditions without steam.

In shipbuilding, accurate fabrication of curved hull plates is one of the most important steps, since the shape of ship hull, which is very critical in the overall performance of a ship, is a collection of such plates. The curved hull plates forming process requires a significant amount of time by skilled workers in shipbuilding. In general, the workers cause thermal distortion in the plate and forming initial shape using gas heat source. So shipbuilding companies need skilled workers who have long experience. To solve the problem, a lot of researchers tried to develop automation system for curved hull plates. In this paper, we propose automatic heating system with gantry robot, high frequency induction heater to replace the gas heat source and automatic measurement system. We apply the system to forming concave type plate that is actually used in ship manufacturing. In addition, a system was developed to automatically generate heating information, such as the heating location and the heating speed, for actual heating process. Then the system was applied to the actual heating material. It is shown that the proposed triangle heating pattern makes desired concave shape successfully. The induction heating system showed that it can be used for automation system of curved hull plates forming process replacing gas heat source.
BACKGROUND: Measurement equipment was developed for inorganic nutrient concentration inside the hydroponic culture medium with several macro- and micro compositions, and applied for measuring the compositions of conventional medium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Before the equipment development, sonicator and heater were utilized to control temperature around of the module mixing with color reagents and target samples among the inorganic compositions. The measurement module and multi-sampler were also manufactured based on the COMS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) and installed inside the measurement equipment. Concentration of standard solution, value measured by the equipment, standard deviation or measured average value were used for estimating the accuracy and average recall of the equipment. Yamazaki solutions with EC of 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 dS/m were offered to confirm the equipment accuracy and standard error. CONCLUSION: It was suggested that the developed equipment could be automatically applied for measurement with accuracy of over 96% and standard errors of less than 5% on 12 macro- and micro compositions such as a NO3-N, PO43- or Fe.
Two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics during the reflood phase of a single heated rod in the KHU reflood experimental facility were examined. Two-phase flow behavior during the reflooding experiment was carefully visualized along with transient temperature measurement at a point inside the heated rod. By numerically solving one-dimensional inverse heat conduction equation using the measured temperature data, time-resolved wall heat flux and temperature histories at the interface of the heated rod and coolant were obtained. Once water coolant was injected into the test section from the bottom to reflood the heated rod of >700℃, vast vapor bubbles and droplets were generated near the reflood front and dispersed flow film boiling consisted of continuous vapor flow and tiny liquid droplets appeared in the upper part. Following the dispersed flow film boiling, inverted annular/slug/churn flow film boiling regimes were sequentially observed and the wall temperature gradually decreased. When so-called minimum film boiling temperature reached, the stable vapor film between the heated rod and coolant was suddenly collapsed, resulting in the quenching transition from film boiling into nucleate boiling. The moving speed of the quench front measured in the present study showed a good agreement with prediction by a correlation in literature. The obtained results revealed that typical two-phase flow and heat transfer behaviors during the reflood phase of overheated fuel rods in light water nuclear reactors are well reproduced in the KHU facility. Thus, the verified reflood experimental facility can be used to explore the effects of other affecting parameters, such as CRUD, on the reflood heat transfer behaviors in practical nuclear reactors.
