Derivation of a Simplified Heat Transfer Correlation for AP 600 Passive Containment Cooling System

  • A simplified heat transfer model for the cooling capability of the AP 600 PCCS is proposed I this paper. As the PCCS domain is covered with very thin and long water film, it is phenomenologically divided into 3 regions; water entrance effect region, asymptotic region, and air entrance effect region. As the length of the asymptotic region is estimated to be over 90% of the whole domain, the phenomena in the asymptotic region is focused. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer phenomena in a turbulent situation, a new dependent variable combining temperature and vapor mass fraction was defined. The similarity between the PCCs phenomena in the asymptotic region and the buoyant air flow phenomena on a vertical heated plate is derived. Using the similarity, the simplified heat transfer correlations for the interfacial heat fluxes and the ratios of latent heat transfer to sensible heat transfer were established. To verify the accuracy of the correlation, the results of this study were compared with those of other numerical analyses performed for the same configuration and they are well within the range of 15% difference.

  • A study of literatures on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels is summarized. The potential applications, fabrication method and efforts to determine certain dimensional threshold for microchannels classifications are discussed. For the last two decades, numerous two-phase flow and heat transfer models for microchannels have been developed; many of them were derived from empirical models originally applied for conventional channels. Those models are discussed here along with a brief review on recent development of theoretical and phenomenological-based models for microchannels. This study is devoted to provide a review of important issues on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels, including two-phase flow patterns, boiling heat transfer mechanism and correlations developments, pressure drop and prediction methods, and critical heat flux.

브레이징 휜-관 열교환기의 공기측 열유동 성능평가 (Evaluation of Air-side Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer Performance of Brazing Fin-tube Heat Exchanger)

  • The present work was conducted to investigate the air-side thermal-hydraulic performance of the brazing fin-tube heat exchanger. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient for a plain and a louvered fin configuration were compared numerically and experimentally. It was found that the heat transfer characteristics for the plain fin were similar to the developing flow in the rectangular channel. The louver fin showed about twice better heat transfer coefficient than the plain fin. Previous empirical correlations presented by Davenport, Sunden and Svantesson, Sahnoun and Webb, Chang and Wang, Achaichia and Cowell, and Kang were compared with the present experimental data.

Coolant Material Effect on the Heat Transfer Rates of the Molten Metal Pool with Solidification

  • Experimental studies on heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling were performed The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water and R113 are used as the working coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer characteristics of the molten metal pool immersed in the boiling coolant. The Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study are compared between the water coolant case and the R113 coolant case. The experimental results or the water coolant are higher than those for R113. Also, the empirical relationship of the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number is compared with the literature correlations measure from mercury. The present experimental results are higher than the literature correlations. It is believed that this discrepancy is caused by the effect of heat loss to the environment on the natural convection heat transfer in the molten pool.

혼합냉매의 풀비등 열전달 상관식 (Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Correlation for Mixture Refrigerants)

  • Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of HFC32/HFC134a, HFC125/HFC134a, HFC32/HFC125 and HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a were measured on a horizontal smooth tube. The experimental apparatus was specially designed to simulate the real heat transfer tube with the use of the secondary fluid of water. Data were taken in the order of decreasing heat flux starting at 80kW/$m^2\; and\; ending\; at\; 5kW/m^2$ in the pool temperature at $7^{\circ}C$. Test results showed that HTCs of these mixtures were 11~38% lower than those of ideal HTCs calculated by a linear mixing rule with pure fluids、 HTCs. Experimental data were compared with Stephan & Korner, Thome, Schlunder, Thome & Shakir、s correlations only to find that those correlations were not satisfactory for all fluids. Hence, a new correlation based on the present data was proposed which could be applied even to the ternary mixture. The correlation predicts the degradation of HTCs of mixtures well, showing a mean deviation of less than 15% for all the mixture data.

Hardy-Cross법을 이용한 $CO_2$ 냉동기용 내부열교환기의 열전달 특성 연구 (Analysis of Heat Transfer Characteristics of Internal Heat Exchanger for $CO_2$ Refrigerator using the Hardy-Cross Method)

  • The heat transfer characteristics of an internal heat exchanger for $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle are numerically investigated. The numerical model is verified using the published experimental results for the concentric tube type internal heat exchanger. The Hardy-Cross Method gives very good agreement between the calculation and experimental results on the heat transfer rates and exit temperatures. Also, appropriate combination of heat transfer correlations is found. The operating parameters of the heat exchanger are calculated at transcritical region of $CO_2.$ The heat transfer rate of the counter flow type heat exchanger shows the $32\%$ greater than that of the parallel flow type heat exchanger. The increase of heat exchanger length enhances the heat transfer rate. The thermodynamic characteristics and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in the internal heat exchanger are estimated.

Oblong 셀 앤 플레이트 열교환기에서의 단상 열전달, 압력강하 특성 및 성능예측 프로그램 개발에 관한 연구 (Study on Single-Phase Heat Transfer, Pressure Drop Characteristics and Performance Prediction Program in the Oblong Shell and Plate Heat Exchanger)

  • In this study, single-phase heat transfer experiments were conducted with Oblong Shell and Plate heat exchanger using water. An experimental water loop has been developed to measure the single-phase heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in a vertical Oblong Shell and Plate heat exchanger. Downflow of hot water in one channel receives heat from the cold water upflow of water in the other channel. Similar to the case of a plate heat exchanger, even at a very low Reynolds number, the flow in the Oblong Shell and Plate heat exchanger remains turbulent. The present data show that the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increase with the Reynolds number. Based on the present data, empirical correlations of the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in terms of Nusselt number and friction factor were proposed. Also, performance prediction analyses for Oblong Shell and Plate heat exchanger were executed and compared with experiments. $\varepsilon$-NTU method was used in this prediction program. Independent variables are flow rates and inlet temperatures. Compared with experimental data, the accuracy of the program is within the error bounds of $\pm$5% in the heat transfer rate.

코일직경변화에 따른 헬리컬 코일형 가스냉각기내 초임계 이산화탄소의 냉각열전달 특성 (Heat Transfer Characteristics of Supercritical $CO_2$ in Helical Coil Gas Coolers on the Change of Coil Diameters)

  • 본 연구는 코일직경변화에 따른 헬리컬 코일 가스냉각기내 초임계 $CO_2$의 냉각 열전달 특성에 대해 실험적으로 조사하였다. 냉매 순환루프의 주요구성품은 수액기, 변속펌프, 질량유량계, 예열기, 헬리컬 코일형 가스냉각기(시험부)로 구성된다. 시험부는 내경 4.55 mm의 평활 동관과 26.75 mm와 41.35 mm인 코일직경으로 이루어져 있다. 냉매질량유속은 $200kg/m^2s$에서 $800kg/m^2s$가지 변화시켰고, 가스냉각기의 입구압력 범위는 7.5 MPa에서 10.0 MPa까지이다. 코일직경이 26.75 mm인 가스냉각기내 이산화탄소의 냉각열전달 계수가 코일직경이 41.35 mm인 열전달 계수보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 초임계 상태에서 제안한 종래의 냉각 열전달 상관식과 비교한 결과, 대부분의 상관식이 과소예측되었고, 그 중에서도 이산화탄소의 냉각 열전달 계수는 Pilta 등이 제안한 상관식과 좋은 일치를 보였다. 하지만, 유사임계 온도 영역부근에서는 실험데이터가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다.

A Review on the Performance of Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchangers Under Frosting and Defrosting Conditions

  • This paper reviews the literature on the performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers under frosting and defrosting conditions. The effects of frosting and defrosting on the following parameters were discussed: frost growth, overall heat transfer coefficient, surface roughness, and surface characteristics on the heat exchanger. Comparisons of the experimental results and empirical correlations that were obtained from open literature were presented. In addition, a review of the defrosting methods was conducted.

LNG 냉열활용을 위한 초저온 열교환시스템의 축소모형에서 증발 열전달 특성 (Characteristics of Evaporation Heat Transfer in a Small-Scale Cryogenic Heat Exchange System for the Utilization of LNG Cold Energy)

  • 본 연구는 LNG냉열활용을 위해 초저온 열교환시스템을 제작하고 액화질소와 에틸렌-글리콜 수용액을 작동유체로 사용하여 증발 열전달 특성실험을 수행하였다. 초저온 열교환기는 2중관식 열교환기이며, 내부관 지름이 8, 15 mm이며 길이는 6m이다. wire-coil inserts를 사용하여 열전달촉진 성능평가를 수행하였다. 액화질소와 에틸렌-글리콜 수용액의 출입구 온도, 벽면온도, 유량, 압력을 측정하였고, 이를 증발 열전달계수와 누셀트수를 계산하는데 사용하였다. 열전달상관식을 누셀트수, 프란틀수와 등가레이놀즈수의 멱법칙관계로 제안하였고, 그 결과 열전달촉진관이 평활관보다 2.5 ${\~}$ 5.5배정도 열전달이 증가되었다. 이 상관식을 이용하여 LNG냉열이용을 위한 초저온 2중관 열교환기를 설계하였고, 그 결과로 제시하였다.
