Comparison of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Heat Exchangers Having Plain Fins Under Dry and Wet Conditions

  • In this study, dry and wet surface pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of heat exchangers having plain fins were investigated. Nine samples having different fin pitches and rows were tested. The wet surface heat transfer coefficient was reduced from experimental data using enthalpy-potential method. The wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately equal to the dry surface values except for one row configuration. For one row configuration, the wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately $30\%$ lower than the dry surface values. For the pressure drop, the wet surface yielded approximately $30\%$ higher values compared with the dry surface counterpart. Data were compared with existing correlations.

  • The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal round tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 7.75 mm, and length of 5 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 500 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$ to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 40 $kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. In comparison with teat results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • In this study, the numerical process for analyzing the automotive louver fin heat exchanger was developed with a 3D microscopic and semi-microscopic analysis. In the microscopic analysis, the simulation with the detailed meshes was performed for obtaining the characteristics of the heat exchanger. From this simulation, the numerical correlations of the heat transfer and flow friction were obtained. In the semi-microscopic analysis, the Semi-microscopic Heat Exchanger (SHE) method, which is characterized by a conjugate heat transfer and porous media analysis was used with the numerical correlation from the microscopic analysis. This analysis predicted the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the louver fin heat exchanger in the wind tunnel and vehicle. In the design of the louver fin heat exchanger, this numerical process can predict the performance and characteristic of the louver fin heat exchanger.

액적이탈을 고려한 관내 응축열전달계수 계산 모델 (A modeling of in-tube condensation heat transfer considering liquid entrainment)

  • Local condensation heat transfer coefficients in tubes were calculated by solving momentum and energy equations for annular film with liquid entrainment. The turbulent eddy distribution across the liquid film has been proposed and the calculated heat transfer coefficients were presented. Also turbulent Prandtl number effects on condensation heat transfer were discussed from three Pr$\_$t/ models. Finally, the calculated condensation heat transfer coefficients of R22 were compared with some correlations frequency referred to in open literature. This calculation model considering liquid entrainment predicted well the in-tube condensation heat transfer coefficient of R22 than the model not considering liquid entrainment. The effect of entrainment on heat transfer was predominant for high quality and high mass flux when the liquid film was turbulent.

  • Experimental study has been carried out on the characteristics of pressure drop and heat transfer of brazed plate heat exchangers using R-404A. Data are presented for the following range of variables: the mass flux ($20~80kg/m^2s$), chevron angle($20^{circ}C,\;35^{circ}C,\;45^{circ}C$) and inlet pressure of he refrigerant (1.4 and 1.6 MPa). for both subcooled and tow-phase flow, as chevron angle increases, pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient decrease. Condensation hat transfer coefficient and pressure drop was compared with the previously proposed correlations. Among them, Traviss correlation agreed with experimental results within -35~82% for heat transfer coefficient and -73~93% for pressure drop.

프로필렌 냉매의 응축열전달 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Condensing Heat Transfer Characteristics of Propylene Refrigerant)

  • This paper deals with the heat transfer characteristics of R-1270 (Propylene), R-600a (Iso-butane) and R-290 (Propane) as an environment friendly refrigerant and R-22 for condensing. The experimental apparatus has been set-up as a conventional vapor compression type heat pump system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. A tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 1.32 mm wall thickness is used for this investigation. The test results showed that the local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient was obtained with the maximum value in R-1270 and the minimum one in R-22. Comparing the heat transfer coefficient of experimental results with that of other correlations, the presented results had a good agreement with the Cavallini-Zecchin's correlation. It reveals that the natural refrigerants can be used as substitute for R-22.

The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $0^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$ . The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of C02 are highly dependent on the mass flux. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and friction pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

U형 히트파이프의 작동 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Operational Characteristics of a U-shape Heat Pipe)

  • In this study, the heat transfer characteristics of a U-shape heat pipes were investigated. Heat is supplied to the U heat pipe through its middle zone(evaporator), and is released to the environment through its both arms(condensers). Both heat transfer coefficients and heat transport limitations were measured and compared with correlations previously developed for straight type heat pipes. Special concerns were focused to the cases, when each of condensers were submitted to a different cooling conditions, relatively. As a result. the heat transfer limitation of a U-shape heat pipe was found out to be 10∼15% less than the value for a straight heat pipe with an equivalent size.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study flow boiling heat transfer of deionized water in a microchannel. Measurement and evaluation of boiling heat transfer coefficients were carried out using a single horizontal rectangular microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $100{\mu}m$. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 90, 169 and 267 $kg/m^2$s and heat fluxes of 200-700 $kW/m^2$. Test results showed that the measured boiling heat transfer coefficients had no dependence on mass flux and vapor quality. Most macro-channel correlations of boiling heat transfer coefficient did not provide reliable predictions.
