  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been employed for the Heat exchanger efficiency of a counter flow heat exchanger. The Heat exchanger efficiency has been assessed by considering the computed Nusselt number and flow friction characteristics in the double pipes heat exchanger equipped with two types twisted-tapes: (1) single clockwise direction and (2) alternate clockwise and counterclockwise direction. Cold and hot water are used as working fluids in shell and tube side, respectively. Hot and cold water inlet mass flow rates ranging are between 0.04 and 0.25 kg/s, and 0.166 kg/s, respectively. The inlet hot and cold water temperatures are 54 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results obtained from the tube with twisted-tapes insert are compared with plain tube. Nusselt number and friction factor obtained by CFD simulations were compared with correlations available in the literature. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the results reported in literature.

  • The present study has been conducted to develop a heat recovery system for a 1 MW class gas engine based cogeneration system. In the cogeneration system, heat is recovered from two parts, which are jacket water and exhaust gas. The heat from the jacket water is recovered by a plate type heat exchanger and used for the room heating and/or hot water supply. The heat from the exhaust gas is used to generate steam. For both of the heat recovery devices, 1/5 scaled tests are performed and the data are compared to the conventional correlations for the design.

  • Transcritical$CO_2$ systems are under consideration for use as residential/mobile air conditioners. In these systems, an internal heat exchanger is usually adopted to improve both capacity and/or COP of the $CO_2$ system in lower operating pressure range of gas cooler. A program has been developed to analyse the performance of internal heat exchangers using the section-by-section method. The internal heat exchanger of coaxial configuration is first analyzed and fairly good agreements with the data are obtained, And then the internal heat exchanger of multiple circular coil configuration has been investigated. The results obtained from the parametric study provide the guidelines for the initial design and manufacturing concepts of the internal heat exchanger in transcritical $CO_2$ system. Further studies are necessary to develop the heat transfer correlations of carbon dioxide in the tubes to obtain more accurate results.

  • Performance of the water/air direct contact air conditioning system, in which heat and mass are directly transferred between air and water droplet, is simulated using semi-empirical method. Direct contact system improves transport efficiency compared to conventional indirect contact system. In this study, correlations for h$_{c}$A / c$_{pm}$ which represent the capacity of direct contact system are derived as a function of air and water flowrate from the experimental data. Cooling and heating performance of the water/air direct contact air conditioning system are evaluated using these correlations.ons.

  • Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) were measured with one nonazeotropic mixture of Propane/Isobutane and two azeotropic mixtures of HFC134a/Isobutane and Propane/HFC134a. All data were taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ on a horizontal plain tube with heat fluxes of $10kW/m^2\;to\;80kW/m^2$ with an interval of $10kW/m^2$ in the decreasing order of heat flux. The measurements were made through electrical heating by a cartridge heater. The nonazeotropic mixture of Propane/Isobutane showed a reduction of HTCs as much as 41% from the ideal values. The azeotropic mixtures of HFC134a/Isobutane and Propane/HFC134a showed a reduction of HTCs as much as 44% from the ideal values at compositions other than azeotropic compositions. At azeotropic compositions, however, the HTCs were even higher than the ideal values due to the increase in the vapor pressure. For all mixtures, the reduction in heat transfer was greater with a larger gliding temperature difference. Stephan and $K{\ddot{o}}rner's$ and Jung et al's correlations predicted the HTCs of mixtures with a mean deviation of 11%. The largest mean deviation occurred at the azeotropic compositions of HFC134a/Isobutane and Propane/HFC134a.

  • In this study, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients of alternative refrigerants on a plain, low fin, and two enhanced tubes were measured and compared against each other. To obtain data at conditions similar to the actual evaporator, a fluid heating method was employed instead of an electric heating method in the experiments. R123, R134a, R22 and R410a were used as working fluids and data were taken at 7 deg.C ar heat fluxes of 20 ~ 100 kW/m$\^$2/. Comparison of the plain tube data against some correlations showed that the simplest correlation of Cooper based on reduced pressure predicted the data for all fluids tested with a 10% deviation. For all refrigerants, enhanced tubes composed of subsurface and subtunnels, especially Thermoexcel-E tube, showed the highest heat transfer coefficients among the tubes tested with one exception that the low fin tube's performance was better than those of enhanced tubes for high vapor pressure fluid such as R410a at high heat flux. Finally, a low fin and enhanced tubes showed higher heat transfer enhancement for low vapor pressure of R123 than for high vapor pressure fluisd. For R123, the enhancement factors for Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E tubes were 2.8 ~ 4.8 and 4.6 ~ 8.1 respectively.

  • A ceramic monolith heat exchanger is studied to find the performance of heat transfer and pressure drop by numerical computation and $\xi$-NTU method. The numerical computation was performed throughout the domain including fluid region in exhaust gas-side rectangular ducts, ceramic core and fluid region in air-side rectangular duct with the air and exhaust in cross flow direction. In addition, the heat exchanger was also analyzed to estimate the performance by conventional $\xi$-NTU method with several Nusselt number correlations for flow in rectangular duct from literature. By comparisons of both performances by the numerical computation and the $\xi$-NTU method, the effectiveness by $\xi$-NTU method was closest to the result by numerical computation within a relative error of 2.14% when Stephan's Nusselt number correlation was adopted to the $\xi$-NTU method among the several correlations.

  • The turbulent heat transfer from a round oblique impinging jet on a concave surface were experimentally investigated. The transient measurement method using liquid crystal was used in this study. In this measurement, a preheated wall was suddenly exposed to an impinging jet while recording the response of liquid crystals to measure surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers were 11000, 23000 and 50000, nozzle-to-surface distance ratio was from 2 to 10 and the surface angles were a =$0^{\circ}\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}and\;40^{\circ}$. Correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt numbers with Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle, which account for the surface inclined angle, are presented. The maximum Nusselt numbers, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. In this experiment, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter when surface curvature, D/d is 10.

  • An experimental study on the convective heat transfer characteristics was performed for a two-dimensional wall attaching offset jet(WAOJ). Thermochromic liquid crystal was used to measure the plate wall temperature. The Nusselt number was measured for Reynolds numbers from 6, 500 to 39, 000, and the offset ratios from 0.5 to 15. The maximum Nusselt number point coincides with the time-averaged reattachment point and Nusselt number decreases monotonically after the jet reattaches on the wall. In the recirculation region Nusselt number minimize near the upstream corner and then increases as X/D decreases to vanishes. This suggests the existence of secondary vortices, causing an additional mixing of the flow in the corner. The correlations between the local Nusselt number and Reynolds number, Re, offset ratio, H/D, and streamwise distance, X/D are presented.

  • A 0.5 t/h class non-furnace boiler has been developed with the aim of achieving a high efficiency and compactness. A metal fiber burner has been adopted so that a stable flame can be obtained. The tube banks are installed downstream of the burner. Bare tubes are used upstream, while finned tubes are installed downstream. The heat-transfer characteristics of the non-furnace boiler have been studies on the basis of the results of the numerical simulation as well as those of the experiment. Important design parameters such as the bulk temperature along the streamwise direction and the temperature of the fin tips have been evaluated using the CFD results and compared with the experimental data and the empirical correlations typically used for the design of the boiler.
