Temperature distribution measurements in the mockup apparatus of reactor vessel were performed to determine the effective thermal conductivity of porous media with different geometry and to obtain the experimental data for the heat transfer processes by natural convection occurring in the air duct. The temperature distributions at four separated sections with different arrangements of porous media have different slopes according to the geometrical configuration. From the measured temperature distribution, effective thermal conductivity have been derived using the least square fitting method. The test at air duct was performed to the high heat removal at 3.4kW/$m^2$ by the natural convection from the outer wall to the air. And also the temperature distributions in the air duct agree well with the 1/7th power-law turbulent temperature distribution. The obtained heat transfer data have been compared with the Shin's and Sieger's correlations.
The heat transfer and friction characteristics of the heat exchangers having sinusoidal wave fins were experimentally investigated. Twenty-nine samples having different waffle heights (1.5 mm and 2.0 m), fin pitches (1.3mm to 1.7mm) and tube rows (one to three) were tested. Focus was given to the effect of the waffle configuration (herringbone or sinusoidal) on the heat transfer and friction characteristics. Results show that the sinusoidal wave geometry provides higher heat transfer coefficients and friction factors than the herringbone wave geometry, and the difference increases as the number of row increases. The i/f ratios of the herringbone wave geometry, however, are larger than those of the sinusoidal wave geometry. Compared to the herringbone wave geometry, the sinusoidal wave geometry yielded a weak row effect, which suggests a superior heat transfer performance at the fully developed flow region. Possible explanation is provided considering the flow characteristics in wavy channels. Within the present geometric range, the effect of the waffle height on the heat transfer coefficient was not prominent. The effect of the fin pitch was also negligible. Existing correlations highly overpredicted both the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A new correlation was developed using the present data.
Evaporation heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide($CO_2$), R-22, and R-134a in a horizontal smooth tube were measured and analyzed as a function of heat flux, mass flux, and evaporating temperature. The experiments were carried out by varying heat flux from 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$, mass flux from 170 to 340 $kg/m^2s$, and saturation temperatures of 5 and $10^{\circ}C$. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ decreased with a rise of quality due to an earlier liquid-film dryout as compared to R-22 and R-134a. Averaged heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ were 22-63% higher than those of R-22 and R-134a at all test conditions. The effects of mass flux and heat flux on averaged heat transfer coefficients were much greater in $CO_2$ than in R-22 and R-134a. When comparing $CO_2$ test results with the correlations in the literature, the existing models yielded large deviations at medium and high qualities. Therefore, a generalized correlation for $CO_2$evaporation heat transfer needs to be developed by including the effects of dryout phenomenon.
The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchangers with louver fins were experimentally investigated. The samples had small fin pitches (1.0 mm to 1.4 mm), and experiments were conducted up to a very low frontal air velocity (as low as 0.3 m/s). At a certain Reynolds number (critical Reynolds number), the flattening of the heat transfer coefficient curve was observed. The critical Reynolds number was insensitive to the louver angle, and decreased as the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio (L$_{p}$F$_{p}$) decreased. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number did not adequately predict the data. It is suggested that, for proper assessment of the heat transfer behavior, the louver pattern in addition to the flow characterization need to be considered. The heat transfer coefficient increased as the fin pitch decreased. At low Reynolds numbers, however, the trend was reversed. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver pattern between neighboring fins. Different from the heat transfer coefficient, the friction factor did not show the flattening characteristic. The reason may be attributed to the form drag by louvers, which offsets the decreased skin friction at a low Reynolds number. The friction factor increased as the fin pitch decreased and the louver angle increased. A new correlation predicted 92% of the heat transfer coefficient and 90% of the friction factor within $\pm$10%.10%.
In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R134a and R1234yf are measured on a plain, low fin, and Turbo-C tubes at the saturated vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$ with the wall subcooling of $3{\sim}8^{\circ}C$. R1234yf is a new alternative refrigerant of low greenhouse warming potential for replacing R134a which is one of the greenhouse gases controlled by Kyoto protocol and is used extensively in mobile air-conditioners. Test results show that the external condensation HTCs of R1234yf are very similar to those of R134a for all three surfaces tested. For the application of condensation heat transfer correlations to the design of condensers charged with R1234yf, thorough property measurements are needed for R1234yf in the near future.
An experiment was carried out to evaluate the heat transfer and pressure drop performances of the smooth tube and two augmented tubes using R-113 under horizontal condensation condition. The augmented tubes are a spirally-twisted tube and an internally-finned tube. The test tube is 13.88 mm in diameter and 3.2 m long. Five different inlet pressure of 0.13, 0.16, 0.18, 0.21 and 0.23 MPa were employed and the mass flux was varied from 80 to 265 $kg/m^{2}s.$ The results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficient for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were enhanced by 30-85% and 130-180%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. The increase in total pressure drop for the spirally-twisted tube and internally-finned tube were reached up to 250-350% and 1100-1600%, respectively, over that for the smooth tube. Correlations were proposed for predicting the condensation heat transfer coefficient for the smooth tube and two augmented tubes.

The dependence of the node size in the condensation heat transfer coefficient for an inclined surface is eliminated and two correlations applicable for laminar and turbulent regimes are implemented in RELAP5/MOD3.1. The newly implemented correlations are used according to their applicable ranges of the film Reynolds numbers Reps which are calculated recursively to track the condensate film thickness along the condensation length. The modified version is compared with the original one through comparison with an analytical solution and the simulation of the Secondary Condensers (SC). It turns out that the simulation results by this modified version are independent of the node size and are better agreement with the analytical solution than those by the original one.
Nucleate pool boiling of water in vertical annuli at atmospheric pressure has been studied experimentally and two empirical correlations have been suggested to obtain effects of geometric parameters on heat transfer. Data of the present and the previous tests range over a tube length of 0.50-0.57 m, a diameter of 16.5-34.0 mm, and an annular gap size of 3.7-44.3 mm. Through the analysis, tube bottom confinement (open or closed) has been investigated, as well. The developed correlations predict experimental data within a ${\pm}25%$ error bound. It has been identified that effects of the diameter and the length of heated tubes as well as the annular gap size should be counted into the analyses to estimate heat transfer coefficients accurately.
