Experimental investigation on two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A and R-134a in horizontal small tubes is reported. The pressure drop and local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over heat flux range of 5 to $40\;kW/m^2$, mass flux range of 70 to $600\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature range of 2 to $12^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0 in test section with inner tube diameters of 3.0 and 0.5 mm, and lengths of 2000 and 330 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and inner tube diameter, on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are presented. The experimental results are compared against several existing correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for refrigerants in small tubes is developed.
The present paper dealt with flow heat transfer characteristics of R-410A vaporization in horizontal smooth microchannel. The test sections were made of stainless steel tube with inner diameters of 300 mm and length of 300 mm. The refrigerant was supplied with mass flux range of 260-600 kg/$m^2s$ and applied under operating heat flux range of 5-20 kW/$m^2$ using a direct electric current heating method. The in let saturation temperature was set at $10^{\circ}C$ and vapor quality up to 1.0. The influences of mass flux, heat flux and inner tube diameter on local heat transfer coefficients were presented. Comparison with existing heat transfer coefficient correlations was performed. An improved heat transfer coefficient correlation for refrigerant vaporization in microchannel based on superposition model was developed with a mean deviation of 14.01%.

The present work was conducted to get the best geometric information for the optimum design of the complex heat exchanger. The objective function for optimal design was expressed as a combination of pressure drop and heat transfer rate. The geometric parameters for the variables of louver pitch and height, tube width, etc., were limited to ranges set by manufacturing conditions. The optimum geometric parameters were calculated by using empirical correlations and theory. The sensitivity of the parameters and optimum values are shown and discussed. The weighting factor in the objective function is important in the selection of the louver fin-tube heat exchanger.
Because of the ozone layer depletion and global wanning, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. Among them, HFC refrigerants are thought promising, but some European countries are arguing that these refrigerants are also harmful to the global wanning. Therefore, natural refrigerants should be considered as an eventual alternative in refrigerators and heat pumps. In the present study, the supercritical gas cooling process are computationally analysed by employing various turbulence models of carbon dioxide in a trans critical refrigeration cycle. The gas cooling process near the critical point experiences a drastic change in thermodynamic and transport properties, thus the heat transfer characteristics would be different from those of two or single phases. Based on the computational results, the correlations to estimate the near-critical heat transfer characteristics will are obtained.

Flow visualization experiments were conducted for two louver arrays having large louver pitch ratio ($L_p/F_p=1.0$ and 1.4). Flow efficiencies and critical Reynolds numbers were obtained from the data, and were compared with existing correlations. The correlations failed to predict the present flow efficiency data adequately; some correlation overpredicted the data, while others underpredicted the data. Large louver pitch ratio of the present model, which is outside of the applicable range of the correlations may partly be responsible. The critical Reynolds numbers obtained from the present flow visualization data were in close agreement with those obtained from the heat transfer tests on actual flat tube heat exchangers. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number generally overpredicted the present data.

Air side heat transfer and pressure drop for fin-tube heat exchanger with wave and wave-slit fins were measured for various fin spacings and number of tube rows. Outer diameter of the tube including fin collar is 10.07mm, and experiments were done with dry surface condition. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65mm and 25mm respectively, and wave depth of the wave fin is 2mm. Experiments were conducted for 1, 2 and 3 rows and 3 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7mm. An attempt was made to demonstrate advantage of the enhanced fins over the plane fin by introducing the concept of fan power, Effect of the number of tube rows on heat transfer was discussed in connection with general mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement for fin-tube heat exchanger. Also the effect of hydrophilic coating was investigated. Lastly, correlations for Colburn j-factor and friction factor were developed.

This study provides a fundamental understanding of a cold finger melt crystallization technique by exploring the heat and mass transfer processes of cold finger separation. A series of experiments were performed using a simplified LiCl-CsCl system by varying initial CsCl concentrations (1, 3, 5, and 7.5 wt%), cold finger cooling rates (7.4, 9.8, 12.3, and 14.9 L/min), and separation times (5, 10, 15, and 30 min). Results showed a potential recycling rate of 0.36 g/min with a purity of 0.33 wt% CsCl in LiCl. A CsCl concentrated drip formation was found to decrease crystal purity especially for smaller crystal formations. Dimensionless heat and mass transfer correlations showed that separation production is primarily influenced by convective transfer controlled by cooling gas flow rate, where correlations are more accurate for slower cooling gas flow rates.
A heat transfer correlation to predict the vaporization of a water droplet in highly superheated steam during a loss-of-coolant accident(LOCA) of a nuclear power plant is provided. Vaporization of liquid fuel or water droplets in superheated air or steam and subsequent interface heat transfer between a liquid droplet and superheated gas is typically correlated by way of a Nusselt number as a function of Reynolds number, Prantl number, and in some cases including mass transfer number. Presently available correlations and experimental data of the evaporation of liquid droplets in air or steam are analyzed and a new Nusselt number correlation is proposed taking Schmidt number into consideration in order to account for binary diffusion of the vapor as well, Nu$\_$f/(1+B)$\^$0.7/=2+0.53Sc$\_$f/$\^$-1/5/Re$\_$M/$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$/Pr$\_$f/$\^$$\sfrac{1}{3}$/ for which properties are evaluated at film condition except the density of Reynolds number evaluated at ambient condition. Diverse correlations for various combinations of liquid and gas species are put into single equation. The blowing correction factor of (1+B)$\^$0.7/ is confirmed appropriate, and a criterion to distinguish so-called high- and low-temperature condition of ambient gas is set forth.

The present paper dealt with an experimental study of boiling heat transfer characteristics of R-290. Pressure gradient and heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant flow inside horizontal smooth minichannel were obtained with inner tube diameter of 3.0 mm and length of 2,000 mm. The direct electric heating method was applied for supplying a heat to the refrigerant uniformly. The experiments were conducted with R-290 purity of 99.99%, at saturation temperature of 0 to $10^{\circ}C$, a mass flux range of $50{\sim}250kg/m^2s$, and a heat flux range of $5{\sim}20kW/m^2$. The heat transfer coefficients of R-290 increased with increasing mass flux and saturation temperature, wherein the effect of mass flux was higher than that of the saturation temperature. Heat flux has a low effect on the increasing of heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient was compared with six existing heat transfer coefficient correlations. The Zhang et al.'s correlation (2004) gave the best prediction of heat transfer coefficient. A new correlation to predict the two-phase flow heat transfer coefficient was developed based on the Chen correlation. The new correlation predicted the experimental data well with a mean deviation of 11.78% and average deviation of -0.07%.

The present experimental study investigates the impact of porous fins on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in plate-fin heat exchangers. Systematic experiments have been carried out in a simplified model of a plate-porous fin heat exchanger at a controlled test environment. Comparison of performance between the porous fins and the conventional louvered fins has been made. The experimental results indicate that friction and heat transfer rate are significantly affected by permeability as well as porosity of the porous fin. The porous fins used in the present study show a similar air-side performance to the louvered fin. The correlations of friction and modified j-factor are also given for the design of the plate-porous fin heat exchanger.
