  • For dry machining of mineral materials the Institute of Materials Engineering pursues a novel thermal protection shield concept for diamond tools, in which thermal insulating materials in diamond composite structures act as heat shield, which protects diamonds in deeper layers against high temperature and graphitisation. Before the effectiveness of this concept could be investigated suitable composites have to be manufactured. In this paper the powder metallurgical production processes of diamond-alumina-cobalt-composites with varying alumina and cobalt particle sizes, their microstructures and porosities are described. It could be observed that the distribution of small-sized alumina particles ($<70{\mu}m$) in the cobalt matrix is uniform and the porosity of the composite decrease.

  • A new microemitter (microcombustor) configuration for a micro thermophotovoltaic system in which thermal energy is directly converted into electrical energy through thermal radiation was investigated experimentally and computationally. The microemitter as a thermal heat source was designed for a few watt power-generating micro thermophotovoltaic system. In order to satisfy the primary requirements for designing the microemitter, i.e., stable burning in the small confinement and maximum heat transfer through the emitting walls but uniform distribution of temperature along the walls, the present microemitter is cylindrical with an annular-type shield for heat recirculation to apply for the excessive enthalpy concept. Results show that the heat recirculation substantially improves the performance of the microemitter: the observed and predicted thermal radiation from the microemitter walls indicated that heat generated in the microemitter is uniformly emitted.

  • A new burner configuration for a compact fuel-cell reformer with a high-temperature air combustion concept was numerically studied. The burner was designed for a 40 $Nm^3/hr$ hydrogen-generated reformer using natural gas-steam reforming method. In order to satisfy the primary requirements for designing a reformer burner (uniform distribution of temperature along the fuel processor walls and minimum heat losses from the reformer), the features of the present burner configuration included 1) a self-regenerative burner for an exhaust-gas-recirculation to apply for the high-temperature air combustion concept, and 2) an annular-type shield for protecting direct contact of flame with the processor walls. For the injection velocities of the recirculated gas of 0.6-2.4 m/s, the recirculated gas temperature of 1000 K, and the recirculated oxygen mole fraction of 4%, the temperature distributions along the processor walls were found uniform within 100 K variation. Thus, the present burner configuration satisfied the requirement for reducing temperature gradients along the processor walls, and consequently demonstrated that the high-temperature air combustion concept could be applied to the practical fuel reformers for use of fuel cells. The uniformity of temperature distribution is enhanced as the amount of the recirculated gas increases.

  • Several crucial issues are discussed in the design of cryogenic cooling system for high field magnets. This study is mainly motivated by our ongoing program to develop a 21 T Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer (FT-ICR MS). The magnets of this system will be built horizontally to accomplish the requirement of user friendliness and reliability, and the replenishment of cryogen will not be necessary by a closed-loop cooling concept. The initial cool-down and safety are basically considered in this paper. The effects of the helium II volume and the gap distance of the weight load relief valve (or safety valve) on the cool-down time and temperature rising during an off-normal state are discussed. The total amount of cryogenic cooling loads and the required helium flow rate during cool-down are also estimated by a relevant heat transfer analysis. The temperatures of cryogen-free radiation shield are finally determined from the refrigeration power of a cryocooler and the total cryogenic loads.
