  • Thermal oxidation has significant potential for use in synthesizing metal-oxide nanostructures from metallic materials. However, this method has limited applicability to the synthesis of multi-morphology NiO from Ni foil. Techniques consisting of mechanical and chemical approaches were used to pre-treat the Ni foil (prior to oxidation) to promote the formation of nanowires and nanoplates on the NiO layer. These morphologies were realized on the Ni foils scratched by sand paper and a knife, respectively, and subsequently heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Small nanowires (diameter: <10 nm) formed on the Ni foil treated by absolute $HNO_3$ and then oxidized at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The formation of various morphologies (on the pre-treated Ni foil), which differ from that formed in the case of pristine Ni foil after oxidation, may be attributed to the surface melting phenomenon that occurs during the nucleation process.

  • By studying the characteristics of matrix insulated through heat generated through oxidation of iron powder, the basic research results on the possibility of buffering and applicability of Cold weather concrete as a curing method are presented. In order to prevent freezing due to a sharp decrease in temperature in the initial stage of curing, iron powder (Fe), powder activated carbon, which is a small amount of porous carbonaceous adsorbent, and salt (NaCl) as an oxidizing agent are replaced with iron powder admixture. As the curing temperature increases, the strength tends to increase, and when replacing the admixture at the same curing temperature, the strength slightly decreases. This is determined as a result of generating iron oxide through an oxidation reaction of iron powder, activated carbon, and NaCl generating a large amount of pores in the matrix. In addition, the internal temperature tends to increase as the mixing substitution rate increases, and it is judged that the oxidation heat of the iron powder mixture affects the increase of the internal temperature during curing. The higher the replacement rate of the iron powder mixture, the slightly lower the strength, but it is determined that freezing and melting that may occur in the early stage of curing can be prevented due to an increase in the initial internal temperature.

  • The mechanical and corrosion behavior of the Russian zirconium fuel cladding alloy E110, predominantly used in VVERs, has been investigated for many decades. The recent commercialization of a new, optimized E110 alloy, produced on a sponge zirconium basis, gave the opportunity to compare the mechanical properties of the old and the new E110 fuel claddings. Axial and tangential tensile test experiments were performed with samples from both claddings in the MTA EK. Due to the anisotropy of the cladding tubes, the axial tensile strength was 10-15% higher than the tangential (measured by ring tensile tests). The tensile strength of the new E110G alloy was 11% higher than that of the E110 cladding at room temperature. Some samples underwent chemical treatment - slight oxidation in steam or hydrogenation - or heat treatment - in argon atmosphere at temperatures between 600 and $1000^{\circ}C$. The heat treatment during the oxidation had more significant effect on the tensile strength of the claddings than the oxidation itself, which lowered the tensile strength as the thickness of the metal decreased. The hydrogenation of the cladding samples slightly lowered the tensile strength and the samples but they remained ductile even at room temperature.

  • Oxidative degradation of phenol, three monochlorophenols (2-chlorophenol, 2-CP; 3-chlorophenol, 3-CP; 4-chlorophenol, 4-CP), four dichlorophenols (2,3-dichlorophenol, 2,3-DCP; 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-DCP; 2,5-dichlorophenol, 2,5-DCP; 2,6-dichlorophenol, 2,6-DCP), and two trichlorophenols (2,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2,4,5-TCP; 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4,6-TCP) was conducted with heat activated persulfate. As the number of chlorinations increased, the reaction rate also increased. The reaction rate was relatively well fitted to the zero-order kinetic model, rather than the pseudo-first order kinetic model for the reactions at 60 ℃, which can be explained by insufficient activation of the persulfate at 60 ℃, and the oxidation reaction of 2,4,6-TCP at 70 ℃ was relatively well fitted to the pseudo-first order kinetic model. The oxidation reaction rate generally increased with increase of persulfate concentration in the solution. 2,6-dichloro-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione was found as a degradation product in a GC/MS analysis. This compound is a non-aromatic compound, and one chlorine was removed. This result is similar to the result of previous studies. The current study proved that heat activated persulfate activation could be an alternative remediation technology for phenol and chlorophenols in soil and groundwater.

  • The effect of grain size on corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation behavior was studied in 22Cr-15Ni-5W super austenitic stainless steels for desulfurization equipment as a heat power station. In the high temperature oxidation test, oxidation rate was increased as the temperature increased from $600^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. In vapor, oxidation rate was faster than that in air. Because the vapor was inhibited nucleation of $Cr_2O_3$ film. And the high temperature oxidation resistance at $600^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ was excellent from all specimens and specimen of the smallest grain size was the most excellent. Because increasing of diffusion course through the grain-boundary was promoted nucleation and growth of $Cr_2O_3$ film. In the test temperature at $600^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, Cr rich round particle oxide was formed in air, whereas Fe rich needle type oxide was developed in vapor.

  • MoSi2, (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2, and WSi2 powders were synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. The synthesized powders were heat-treated at 500, 1,000, 1,200, 1,300, 1,400, 1,500 and 1,600℃ in ambient atmosphere. Oxidation of Mo-W silicide powder was found at low temperature of 500℃. XRD structure analysis and DTA/TG data showed that MoO3 was formed with 500℃ heat treatment for 1 hour, and that it was α-cristobalite phase that was formed with 1200℃ heat treatment, not α-quartz phase which is commonly found and stable at room temperature. Existence of W accelerated decomposition at both low and high temperature. Fully sintered MoSi2 and (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2 specimen did not show decomposition or weight loss by oxidation, with 1 hour heat treatment at either low or high temperature. Notably, it was difficult to sinter WSi2 because of oxidation reaction at low temperature.

  • In this study, optimization of MEK and Toluene removal was conducted by HTO(Hybrid Thermal Oxidation) system. HTO system has a multi-bed reaction plate and the plate consisted of wasted heat regeneration part and catalysis part. VOCs removal by HTO system was estimated by changing inlet flow rates with different valve changing times. Under $350^{\circ}C$ of combustion temperature, VOCs was fully converted and the equivalent conversion was 100%. The thermal oxidation efficiency, related to the amount of injected fuel into HTO system and the valve change time, was revealed at the level of 93.0~96.3%. In case of MEK removal by HTO system, the efficiency was ranged from 91.1 to 97.1%. Also, Toluene removal efficiency(93.2~97.4%) was good and stable with respect to the operating conditions. Considering above results, it was proved that HTO system could be a stable and compact system for VOCs, especially MEK and Toluene with high removal efficiency.

  • Combined technique of burner and DOC has been used for regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filter. Experiments has been performed to increase the temperature of engine exhaust gas to burn the collected soot in DPF at all conditions of operation of 3 liter diesel engine. Ignition temperature of soot can be successfully obtained by heats of burner flame and residual fuel oxidation at diesel oxidation catalyst even in the condition of oxygen deficiency. It is found that the load of air compressor and heat loss can be reduced to the level of practical application. It is also found that CO and THC emissions are not increase by additional combustion of regeneration burner.

  • Phosvitin, an iron chelating protein in egg yolk, was measured for its ability to inhibit lipid oxidation in egg oil model system. Phosvitin(75$\mu$M) could inhibit both iron(50∼150$\mu$M) and copper(5∼15$\mu$M) catalyzed oxidation of egg oil, and much more effective in the presence of iron than copper. The antioxidant activity of phosvitin in egg oil decreased with increasing temperature up to 121$\^{C}$. But phosvitin was relatively heat stable maintaining 79 and 73% of its antioxidant activity after being heated for 6 min at 100$\^{C}$ and 2 min at 121$\^{C}$, respectively.
