In this study, we analyze changes in soil heat flux and air temperature in August (summer) and January (winter) according to net radiation, at a mud flat in Hampyeong Bay. Net radiation was observed as $-84.2{\sim}696.2W/m^2$ in August and $-79.4{\sim}352.5W/m^2$ in January. Soil heat flux was observed as $-80.7{\sim}139.5Wm^{-2}$ in August and $-49.09{\sim}137W/m^2$ in January. Air temperature was observed as $24.2{\sim}32.9^{\circ}C$ in August and $-1.5{\sim}11.1^{\circ}C$ in January. The rate of soil heat flux for net radiation ($H_G/R_N$) was 0.17 in August and 0.34 in January. Because the seasonal fluctuation in net radiation was bigger than the soil heat flux, net radiation in August was bigger than in January. We estimated a linear regression function to analyze variations in soil heat flux and air temperature by net radiation. The linear regression function and coefficient of determination for the soil heat flux by net radiation was y=0.19x-7.94, 0.51 in August, and y=0.39x-11.69, 0.81 in January. The time lag of the soil heat flux by net radiation was estimated to be within ten minutes in August 2012 and January 2013. The time lag of air temperature by net radiation was estimated at 160 minutes in August, and 190 minutes in January.
Concentration characteristics of the KIER solar furnace are analyzed with a heat flux measurement technique. Total heat capacity of 40kW was confirmed within 1.04% average error, and the normalized maximum heat flux of 3,452 $kW/m^2$ was proved. Non-Gaussian flux distribution in the vertical direction implies that reflectors should not be random rather inclined downwards. Moreover, we characterized flux distribution variations with furnace blind opening ratio, distance from the focal plane, and misalignment of the measurement system. Based on the results, the heat flux distribution can be simply estimated once reflectivity and direct normal insolation values are known. This study will be helpful to the design and the performance evaluation of receivers or chemical reactors.
In this study, evaporation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-22. Two internal geometries were tested ; one with smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the following range of variables ; vapor quality $(0.1{\sim}0.9)$, mass flux$(100{\sim}600kg/m^2s)$ and heat flux$(5{\sim}15kW/m^2)$. The micro-tin tube showed higher heat transfer coefficients compared with those of the smooth tube. Results showed that, for the smooth tube, the effects of mass flux, quality and heat flux were not prominent, and existing correlations overpredicted the data. For the micro-fin tube at low quality, the heat transfer coefficient increased as heat flux increased. However, the trend was reversed at high quality Kandlikar's correlation predicted the low mass flux data, and Shah's correlation predicted the high mass flux data. The heat transfer coefficient of the micro fin tube was approximately two times larger than that of the plain tube. New correlation was developed based on present data.
In this study, using 16 ORA-IP (Ocean Reanalysis Intercomparison Project) data, we investigated spatial and temporal changes of net surface heat flux in the East Asian seas and presented a new ensemble net surface heat flux index. The ensemble net surface heat flux index is produced considering the data distribution and the standard deviation of each ORA-IP. From the correlation analysis with air temperature averaged over the Korean Peninsula, ensemble net heat flux around the Korea Strait shows the highest correlation (0.731) with a 3 month time lag. For the correlation study regarding precipitation over the Korean Peninsula, it also shows significant correlation especially in winter and spring seasons. Similar results are also found in comparison with climate indices (AO, PDO, and NINO3.4), but ensemble net surface heat flux data in winter season reveals the strongest correlation patterns especially with winter temperature and spring precipitation.
The purpose of this investigation was to characterize nucleate boiling and burn-out heat flux for rectangular free jet with saturated water impinging perpendicularly and upward against a flat uniform heat flux surface. Heat flux measured for Reynolds number based on rectangular nozzle width and for aspect ratio. The result of nucleate boiling heat transfer was presented nondimensional experimental equation including Nusselt, Boiling, Subcooling, Reynolds and Weber number. The effect of aspect ratio of heated surface in the burn-out heat flux had not appeared distinctly. But for the same aspect ratio, burn-out heat flux increased linearly with increment of nozzle exit velocity.
Instantaneous surface temperature and unsteady heat flux of intake and exhaust valve in methanol fueled engine were investigate as a function of compression ratio and engine speed. To accomplish this purpose, the instantaneous temperature sensor was designed and it was installed into three point of intake and exhaust valve head to measure unsteady temperature. The unsteady heat flux at valves was evaluated using one dimensional heat conduction equation with the valve head temperature and temperature gradient. And also mean heat flux of intake and exhaust valve for each stroke were evaluated as a function of engine speed.
The surface energy budget depends on many factors, such as the type of surface, the soil moisture and the vegetation canopy, the geographical location, daily, monthly and seasonal variations, and weather conditions. In the coastal region, the surface is not homogeneous at various scales for instance water, sand, mud, tall grass, and crops. The energy balance over the vegetation canopy was analyzed with the optical energy balance measuring system. The latent heat flux was more intensive than the sensible heat flux. The sensible heat flux was very small in summer due to the canopy effect and higher in spring and autumn. In summer the development of the atmospheric boundary depended on rather the vertical shear of wind than the sensible heat flux.
Experiments on the condensation heat transfer and pressure drop in the brazed type plate heat exchangers are performed with refrigerants R410A/R22. To investigate the geometric effect, plate heat exchangers with the same pitch and height but different $45^{\circ},\;35^{\circ}and\;20^{\circ}$ chevron angles are used. Varying the mass flux of refrigerant (13~34 kg/$m^2$), the condensing temperatures ($20^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$) and the vapor quality (from 0.9 to 0.15) at the same constant heat flux ($5kW/m^2$), the condensation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are measured. The heat transfer coefficients decrease slightly with increasing the condensing temperature at a given mass flux in all plate heat exchangers. The pressure drop increases with increasing the mass flux and the quality and decreasing the condensing temperature and the chevron angle.
Water heat transfer experiments were carried out in a uniformly heated annulus with a wide range of pressure conditions. The local heat transfer coefficients for saturated water (low boiling have been measured just before the occurrence of the critical heat flux (CHF) along the length of the heated section. The trends of the measured heat transfer coefficients were quite different from the conventional understanding for the heat transfer of saturated flow boiling. This discrepancy was explained from the nucleate boiling in the liquid film of annular flow under high heat flux conditions. The well-known correlations were compared with the measured heat transfer coefficients. The Shah and Kandlikar correlations gave better prediction than the Chen correlation. However, the modified Chen correlation proposed in the present work showed the best agreement with the present data among correlations examined .
Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDl) (1991-2001), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the Gunsan harbor Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during March to early September, and it amounts to $125\;Wm^{-2}$ in average daily during May to June. During the middle of September to February, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-125\;Wm^{-2}$ in mininum value in October. Short wave radiation was ranged from 50 to $248\;Wm^{-2}$ showing maxima in April to June. Long wave radiation was ranged from 25 to $92\;Wm^{-2}$ with mininum value in June to July. Sensible heat flux denoting negative values in April to August was ranged from -30 to $72\;Wm^{-2}.$ Latent heat flux was ranged from 15 to $82\;Wm^{-2}$ with maxima in August to September. The phase of heat exchange was changed from cooling to heating in the end of February, and from heating to cooling In the beginning of September. The advective term of heat flux showed minima in April to June and maxima in November. The ratio of temperature variations was 1.37 in the sea surface process and the horizontal process by advection. This indicates that the main factor in variation of temperature at Gunsan harbor is the heat exchange process through the sea surface from the air.
