  • The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of muscle fatigue in elbow flexors on the sense of force reproduction. Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Maximum voluntary force (MVF) of elbow flexor muscles was measured by a digital tensiometer. Force errors were measured to test accuracy of the sense of force reproduction in elbow flexors. The subject was required to flex the elbow joint, to maintain and concentrate on about 20% of the MVF target force under visual feedback for 3 seconds. After a 5 second period rest, the subject was asked to duplicate the target force actively. Muscle fatigue was evoked with isometric contraction of the elbow flexors. Isometric contraction was continued until a 50% drop in MVF. The difference, in kilogram between the target force and the reproduced force was calculated for measuring force error. Force errors were compared between the non-fatigued condition and the fatigued condition by the paired t-test. Force errors were significantly increased in the fatigued condition compare to non-fatigued condition. This result suggests that the sense of force reproduction can be disturbed by localized muscle fatigue.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of the different condition of leg support surface on the upper extremity and core muscle activity during the push-up exercise. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects that were practicable push-ups were recruited in this study. Subjects were instructed the push-up exercise in the different condition of the leg support surface. Each condition of support surface was set to the high and lower, and the unstable and stable condition. Muscle activation was measured by using the surface electromyography (EMG), and recorded from the triceps brachii, serratus anterior, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, abdominal external oblique, and erector spinea muscle. Results: In the results of experiments, there was no significant difference of muscle activation in upper extremity between the high unstable and high stable support surface. By contrast, muscle activation of the rectus abdominis and abdominal external oblique was significantly higher in the low unstable support surface, compared with those of the low stable support surface. It is well known that the core muscle was important to stabilization of trunk stability. Conclusion: This result demonstrates that the low and unstable support surface for the lower extremity was suited for training of core muscle for trunk stabilization during the push-up exercise.

  • Background: Backpacks are one of the most widely used accessories in modern society. However, previous studies have shown that carrying a backpack can cause various musculoskeletal problems. Objectives: To investigate the effects of a body-adhesive backpack on craniovertebral angle, sagittal shoulder angle and the muscle fatigue in the upper extremity. Design: Randomized cross-over design. Methods: For this study, 36 healthy university students participated in this study. The experiment was conducted three times using common backpack, and body-adhesive backpack condition. The angles of the cervical spine and shoulder joints of the subjects were calculated without the backpack. Electrodes were placed at upper trapezius, lower trapezius, rectus abdominis and erector spinae to check for muscle fatigue. Subjects carried a backpack and walked on a treadmill for 15 minutes at 4 km/h. The muscle fatigue signal was also measured while walking. After walking, the craniovertebral and sagittal shoulder angles were measured again while subjects carried backpack. Results: As a result of this study, body-adhesive backpack condition showed significant decrease and significant increase in craniovertebral angle and sagittal shoulder angle than common backpack (P<.05). Body-adhesive backpack condition showed significant decrease in upper trapezius, lower trapezius, erector spinae, and rectus abdominis when compared to a common backpack (P<.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that a body-adhesive backpack is more beneficial in correcting body posture than a common backpack.

  • The authors have transplanted periodontally involved roots which had been root planed into healthy and periodontally involved extraction sockets, and studied the root resorption patterns as well as its effect on new bone formation and wound healing. Alveolar bone around mandibular premolars of 6 adult dogs has been surgically removed, followed by ligation of orthodontic elastic wires for 8 weeks inducing chronic periodontal disease. After removing the crown portions, roots were extracted, and notches were made on the root surfaces discriminating healthy and periodontally involved areas using burs. Controls and experimental groups were divided as follows. Control I : Transplantation of periodontally involved root into healthy extraction sockets. Control II : Transplantation of periodontally involved root into diseased extraction sockets. Experimental group I : Transplantation of root planed roots into healthy extraction sockets. Experimental group II : Transplantation of root planed roots into diseased extraction sockets. Extraction sockets were sutured after transplantations, completely submerging the roots. Healing progress was histologically observed at 2nd, 8th, 12th, and 20th weeks, and the results were as follows ; 1. No inflammation or infection within the extraction sockets had been observed in all groups throughout the experimental period. 2. Reversal lines were observed at week 2 in all groups, clearly discriminating socket walls and new bone, and numerous blood vessels were observed in the new bone trabeculae. 3. Experimental groups showed markedly less root resorption compared to the controls at week 2, but as time progressed, severe resorptions were present in all groups. 4. Localized areas of new bone ankylosis were observed, and the rest of the areas showed collagen fiber insertion with new bone formation at its periphery. 5. No clear differences were found in healing and alveolar bone regeneration between healthy and diseased extraction sockets. 6. The amount of root resorption and ankylosis had increased up to week 8 and 12, showing ankylosis of new bone and the roots. However, no further increase in ankylosis was observed at week 20. 7. Most of the cementum on healthy roots was directly ankylosed to new bone at week, 2, and were gradually resorbed and replaced by new bone thereafter. These results appear to indicate that root planing may inhibit early root resorption of transplanted roots, but gradual replacement by alveolar bone and collagen fibers eventually occur. Condition of the roots or presence of disease in extraction sockets do not appear to make marked differences in alveolar bone regeneration process.

  • Humans may lose considerable amounts of water and electrolytes from sweat during exercise in a hot climate. Optimal ingestion of fluid-replacement beverages may overcome an obstacle factor of exercise performance in the heat. This study was performed the comparison of heart rate and blood lactate between ingestion of Prunus mume solution and water solution during graded maximal exercise using bicycle ergometer in the heat(ambient temperature of 31-32$^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 50-55%). Ten healthy no-heat-acclimatized males participated in the study. Exercise duration until all-out of graded testing in the condition of Prunus mume solution ingestion(786.15$\pm$47.66s) was significantly higher(P<0.05) than the condition of water ingestion. Heart rate at 4 min during graded testing and recovery phase in the condition of Prunus mume solution ingestion was significantly lower(P<0.05) than the condition of water ingestion. Blood lactate concentration at 30min of recovery phase after graded maximal exercise in the condition of Prunus mume solution ingestion was significantly lower(P<0.05) than the condition of water ingestion. Recovery rate of blood lactate concentration at 15 min and 30 min of recovery phase after grated maximal exercise in the condition of Prunus mume solution ingestion was significantly lower(P<0.05) than the condition of water ingestion. Present results suggested that ingestion of Prunus mume solution showed the positive effects on the cardiorespiratory function and acid-base regulation as compared with ingestion of water during graded maximal exercise and recovery phase in hot environment.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of three different types of preparatory movement(squat, countermovement and hopping) in sideward responsive propulsion movement. 7 healthy subjects performed left and right side movement task by external output signal. 3D kinematics were analyzed The results were followed First, performance time in the countermovement and hopping conditions was shorter(10-20%) than that in the squat condition. The hopping condition that is more related to pre-stretch showed excellent performance. Second, time difference between after turned on the external signal and until take off was the primary factor in performance results among movement conditions. The preparatory phase before the propulsive phase in the squat condition produced more time than that in other conditions. The hopping condition showed the most short time in both the preparatory and the propulsive phase, therefore it was advantage for performance result Third, significant difference was not found in take-off velocity among movement conditions although there was difference of the time required in the propulsive phase. The maximum acceleration in the propulsive phase was larger in order of the hopping. countermovement, and squat condition. The countermovement and hopping conditions showed high take-off velocity although the propulsive phase in those conditions was shorter than that in squat condition. The pre-stretch by preparatory countermovement was considered as the positive factor of producing power in concentric contraction. Fourth, the hopping condition produced large angular velocity of joints. In hopping condition, large amount of moment for rotation movement was revealed in relatively short time and it was considered to cause powerful joint movements. In conclusion, the hopping movement using countermovement is advantage of responsive propulsion movement. It is resulted from short duration until take off and large amount of joint moment and joint power in concentric contraction by pre-stretch.

  • Biological assessments are the primary tool for evaluating the biological condition of a water body and makes it possible to understand accumulative and long-term effect of stressors. They also provide reliable biological information for which disturbed systems are to be restored. Sustainable water environment is not enough with attaining only the clean water, but it should sustain healthy and diverse aquatic life. Aquatic organisms are affected by various factors, including not only water quality but also habitat condition and stressors, and thus good condition of both physical and chemical water quality is prerequisite for sustaining healthy organisms. Therefore, biological assessment, along with other physical and chemical assessments, are crucial for evaluating the health of a water body. Overall, sustainability of water environment demands the attainment and maintenance of ecological integrity, which is resulted from the combination of physical, chemical and biological integrity. The biological criteria will play very important role in the water resource management and policy issues, and thus bioassessment program should be fully implemented and supported eventually by the law. To keep ecosystem health of water environment safely from the toxic pollutants and other stressors, the following suggestions need to be considered in environmental quality standards in Korea. For the first step, the biological indicators need to be introduced in evaluating river quality condition; they provide a qualitative description of biological condition of water body. Secondly, the biological water quality standards using biotic indices should be developed and implemented under the consideration of characteristics of Korean river systems. Lastly, the ecological status classification regime (ESCR) should be developed and introduced; it could be used in quality assessment of the water environment in general. In developing ESCR, integration of physico-chemical, biological, and habitat parameters should be taken into account.

  • After a detailed review of the literature availabe on the problems of immunoglobulin level in colostrum and blood serum of calves and after a discussion of its impact on health condition, the following investigations on this subject are presented. 1. Calves to fail ill in the rearing period show significantly lower serum Ig levels even during the first two days of life, when they are still clinically healthy, as well as up to the end of the first week of life than those of calves remaining in good health. 2. Ig values sharply rise during the disease period, IgA and IgM responding more rapidly than IgG. 3. In calves suffering from a disease of the gastrointestinal tract serum IgM titer is lowest, while in calves suffering from a disease of the respiratory duct serum IgA titer is lowest and in those suffering or dying from both disease complexes all Ig titers are reduced. 4. Calves showing high serum Ig levels during the first three days of life reveal higher daily gains in weight than those with lower serum Ig levels during that period.

  • The objectice of this study is to dvaluate the physical condition response of a drever by the change of CO$^{2}$ concentration in the automobile with EEG spectrum analysis. The experiment was performed in a semi-shielded simulated automobile with 10 healthy adults. The results showed that as CO$_{2}$ concentration increased from 500ppm to 6,000ppm, the $\alpha$' value significantly decreased(p*<0.05) while $\beta$' increased (p*<0.05). In a real parked automobile with 2 adult passengers, the CO$_{2}$ gas concintration reached at 6,000ppm in 15 minutes. These spectral data are in well agreement with the subject's verval statement of experiencing uncomfortableness when CO$_{2}$gas was increased ti over 5,000ppm. These results indecated that the EEG spectrum analysis can be appropriately used to assess physical condition of a driver in the changing automobile environment.
