Background: The aim of this study is to validate a new three-dimensional craniofacial stereophotogrammetry imaging system (3dMDface) through comparison with manual facial surface anthropometry. The null hypothesis was that there is no difference between craniofacial measurements using anthropometry vs. the 3dMDface system. Methods: Facial images using the new 3dMDface system were taken from six randomly selected subjects, sitting in natural head position, on six separate occasions each 1 week apart, repeated twice at each sitting. Exclusion criteria were excess facial hair, facial piercings and undergoing current dentofacial treatment. 3dMDvultus software allowed facial landmarks to be marked and measurements recorded. The same measurements were taken using manual anthropometry, using soluble eyeliner to pinpoint landmarks, and sliding and spreading callipers and measuring tape to measure distances. The setting for the investigation was a dental teaching hospital and regional (secondary and tertiary care) cleft centre. The main outcome measure was comparison of the craniofacial measurements using the two aforementioned techniques. Results: The results showed good agreement between craniofacial measurements using the 3dMDface system compared with manual anthropometry. For all measurements, except chin height and labial fissure width, there was a greater variability with the manual method compared to 3D assessment. Overall, there was a significantly greater variability in manual compared with 3D assessments (p < 0.02). Conclusions: The 3dMDface system is validated for craniofacial measurements.
The passive tilt has been performed to study the orthostasis on the cardiovascular system. The orthostasis due to upright tilt was demonstrated as follows: the venous return, cardiac output and systemic arteiral blood pressure were decreased, whereas there was concomitant increase of heart rate, through the negative feedback mediated by such as the baroreceptor . Previous investigators have suggested that the tolerance to the orthostasis could he increased by blocking the cholinergic fiber with atropine which prevented vasodilation and bradycardia through the vasovagal reflex during the orthostasis. However, this hypothesis has not been clearly understood. This study was attempted to clarify the effect of atropine on the tolerance of the cardiovascular system to the upright and head-down tilt, and to investigate the change of the blood flow through head and lower leg with Electromagnetic flowmeter in both tilts before and after atropine state. Fourteen anesthetized dogs of $10{\sim}14kg$ were examined by tilting from supine position to $+77^{\circ}$ upright position (orthostasis), and then to $-90^{\circ}$ head-down position (antiorthostasis) for 10 minutes on each test. And the same course was taken 20 minutes after intravenous administration of 0.5mg atropine. The measurements were made of the blood flow(ml/min.) on the carotid artery, external jugular vein, femoral artery and femoral vein. At the same time pH, $PCO_2$, $PO_2$ and hematocrit (Hct) of the arterial and venous blood, and heart rate(HR) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured. The measurements obtained from upright and head-down tilt were compared with those from supine position. The results obtained are as follows: In upright tilt, the blood flow both on the artery and the vein through head and lower leg were decreased, however the decrement of blood flow through the head was greater than the lower leg And the atropine attenuated the decrement of the blood flow on the carotid artery, but not on the vessels of the lower leg. HR was moderately increased in upright tilt, but slightly in head-down tilt. The percent change of HR after the atropine administration was smaller than that before the atropine state in both upright and head-down tilts. Before the atropine state, RR was decreased in upright tilt, whereas increased in head-down tilt. However after the atropine state, the percent change of RR was smaller than that of before the atropine state in both upright and head-down tilts. In upright tilt, venous $PCO_2$ was increased, but arterial $PO_2$ and venous $PO_2$ were slightly decreased. Hct was increased in both upright and head-down tilts. The findings of blood $PCO_2$, $PO_2$ and Hct were not interferred by the atropine. In conclusion, 1;he administration of atropine is somewhat effective on improving the cardiovascular tolerance to postural changes. Thus, atropine attenuates the severe diminution of the blood flow to the head during orthostasis, and also reduces the changes of HR and RR in both orthostasis and antiorthostasis.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of angulation changes of head posture on the enlargement ratios of a lateral headfilm depending on the vortical or horizontal rotation of the objects. A device was constructed to measure regional changes of enlargement ratios. The device was held within the cephalostat and cephalograms recorded at each measured degrees of the device tilting, vertically and horizontally. The enlargement ratios of the horizontal, vertical, and angular measurements on the films taken at each tilted angulations were obtained and compared with those on the films taken without rotation. In summary, the enlargement ratios of the horizontal linear measurements were decreased during horizontal rotations. The enlargement ratios of vortical measurements of the right side on the film were increased and those of the left side were decreased by the horizontal rotations. Enlargement ratios of horizontal measurements were affected further than those of vertical measurements by the same angular changes of the horizontal rotations. Therefore, a disruption of parallelism between the object's midsagittal plane and the film could result in distortion of the image while vertical rotation around the object's porionic axis would not significantly affect the enlargement ratios on the headfilm.

The purpose of this study is to obtain the enshortening and elongation rate of image in orthopantomograph. The subjects were consisted of 15 dry skulls attached with radiopaque materials on each anatomical points. The length measurements were performed between two points on dry skull, and between two points on film. The results are as follows: 1. The enshortening and elongation rate between two anatomical points (1) ANS↔infraorbital foramen (left:+1.3%, right:+0.7%) (2) ANS↔maxillary tuberosity(left:-11.7%, right:-14.3%) (3) Zygomatic arch length(left:-4.8%, right:-8.9%) (4) first molar↔infraorbital foramen (left:+19.8%, right:+24%) (5) inter-infraorbital foramen length(-21.4%) (6) inter-first molar length (-31.8%) (7) inter-mental foramen length(+1.4%) (8) mental foramen↔mandible angle (left:+3.3%, right:+3.3%) (9) mental foramen↔lingula(left:+8.2%, right:+3.3%) (10) mental foramen↔condyle head(left:+5.2%, right:+4.5%) (11) mandible↔condyle head (left:+15.4%, right:+16.4%) 2. The closer the object is to the occlusal plane and the median line, the smaller it appears.

A variety of wireless devices are commercially available now. Most of studies, however, have been directed to the biological effects of mobile-phone EMF. In this study, dosimetric analysis for wireless devices of head-mounted display type and a wristwatch type were made to investigate possible biological effects of these devices. SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) distributions were calculated using FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method, for adult human models such as standard Korean human model and VHP(Visible Human Project) model, as well as scaled models. Measurements were also performed for SAM phantom wearing a simplified prototype for a wireless device for validation of the simulation results. It has been found that children are more vulnerable to such exposure, and these devices could cause some biological effects for relatively lower power compared to conventional mobile pones.

The flow characteristics of five different 4-valve cylinder heads were investigated in a steady flow rig using laser-Doppler velocimetry. The tumble flow of each head with pentroof combustion chamber was quantified by nondimensional tumble number using a tumble adaptor. The formation of tumbling vortex was examined in an optical single-cylinder engine which has windows for in-cylinder LDV measurements. Tumble vortex ratio was estimated from the tumble flow measurement. The four-valve cylinder heads with pent-roof combustion chamber showed the tumble vortex from the intake process, which was investigated in the steady flow test. The tumble adaptor which converts the tumble into swirl flow was found to be feasible in predicting the tumble flow in the real engine. The tumble strength in the steady flow test coincides with that in the real engine experiment within 15%. It was found that the steady flow test on the four-valve cylinder heads provides the tip for a better design of cylinder head.

In this study, the experimental modal analysis is performed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of slider-air bearings in hard disk drives. Bump response of the slider is acquired by measuring the relative velocity for two points using the laser interferometer, in which the disk is scratched lightly by a sharp knife to make a bump. From the measurements, the modal parameters of the head slider, modal frequencies and damping ratios of roll and pitch, are estimated by data processing and parameter estimation.

A commercial DOHC four valve engine was modified to make a single-cylinder optical model engine with replaceable head. Three kinds of head were used to generate swirl, tumble, and combined swirl/tumble motion. Schlieren visualization technique was applied to characterize the in-cylinder flow qualitatively. Particle Image velocimetry has been developed and applied for the quantitative flow measurements. Axial and tangential flow motion inside the cylinder has been characterized. The swirl/tumble port shows beneficial results in terms of turbulence generation for the initial flame propagation and mean swirl motion for the overall flame propagation.
A very simple a.c. magnetic susceptometer for use in a helium closed cycle cryostat is reported in this paper. This simple setup has only a single bobbin-less copper coil, instead of the primary coil and two secondary coils typically used in mutual-inductance types. The single bobbin-less copper coil is directly mounted on the cryostat cold head. A sample is attached on the inside wall of the copper coil using a thermal contact material and its a.c. magnetic susceptibility is obtained from the measurement of the self-inductance of the sample coil using an LCR meter or an impedance analyzer. Experimental details are described and illustrative measurements on magnetic and superconducting materials as a function of temperature are included. The performances and limitations of this simple a.c. magnetic suceptometer are also discussed.

Predictions of the fuel spray dispersion and mixing processes are very important to improve the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in GDI engines. Numerical and experimental analysis of the sprays with a swirl injector have been conducted. A numerical analysis is carried out using KIVA-II code with modified spray models. Experimental measurements are performed to show the global spray images and the local images near nozzle tip using laser sheet visualization technique. Computed and measured spray characteristics such as spray width, tip penetration are compared, and good agreements can be achieved. The spray head vortex is stronger as the injection pressure increases, but numerical calculations cannot show the head vortex properly.
