The results obtained are as follows. 1. The black-back Prominent has three to four generations in a year depending on the ecological conditions. The first adult appears from the middle of May to early June. 2. The average longevities of aduts were 5.8 days for the male and 5.9 days for female. 3. The period of eggs were about 4 days. 4. The larval period was about 17 2 days. 5. The pupal period was about 5 to 8 days. 6. The width of the head capsule ranged from 0.37mm for the 1st instar to 2.45mm for the last instar. 7. The larvae fed $95cm^2$ for the female and $60cm^2$ for the male in the laboratory condition. 8. The estimated number of the frass evacuated by the larvae were 682 in the laboratory and 663 in the field. 9. The sizes of the frass varied from 0.11mm to 2.46mm in length and 0,05mm to 2.92mm in diameter according to the larval instars. 10. The number of eggs in ovary were about 400. 11. This insect overwinters as a young larva.
Tumors originated from peripheral nerve tissues are neurofibroma, neurilemoma, plexiform neurofibroma, malignant schwannoma, and granular cell tumor. Neurofibromas seem to occur in two forms : The first one is circumscribed solitary neurofibroma and the second group is neurofibromatosis or Von Recklinghausen's disease, which is a congenital and familial disease, presenting abnormalities of the skin, nerve system, bones and soft tissue. A solitary neurofibroma is a benign, relatively circumscribed, noncapsulated tumor which often presents in the skin and subcutaneous tissue as a soft sessile or pedunculated mass. It may occur anywhere in the head and neck, but the common site of the occurrence is the tongue, buccal mucosa, palate in frequency. Since solitary neurofibroma is a relatively radioresistant and its recurrence rate seem to be low, the treatment of choice is surgical excision. The author would like to present a case of unusually large solitary neurofibroma occured in the chin, which was successfully treated with surgical excision and reconstructed using deltopectoral flap and tongue flap.
A study was carried out to investigate the morphological characteristics and life histories of H. morosa and H. diomPhalia during the period from 1984 to 1986. The head capsule width and bOdy length of H. Morosa larvae were slightly greater than those of H. diomPhalia. Otherwise, the two species looked very similar and were hard to be differentiated from each other in all life stages. H. morosa adults emerged in late June and laid eggs in soil during the period between mid July and mid August. Larvae developed by September to the last(3rd) instar which overwintered to pupate in late May. H. diomPhalia adults emerged from mid August but remained under the soil until next spring after which females laid eggs in soil from late May to early July. Larvae developed in most cases to the last instar by September and overwintered thereafter. Unlike H. morosa, they resumed feeding next April and began to pupate in late July. The egg periods of H. morosa and H. diomPhalia did not significantly differ but the larval and pupal periods of the latter were longer than those of the former.
This study describes the first record of Globocephalus samoensis (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) recovered in wild boars from southwestern regions of Korea. Gastrointestinal tracts of 111 Korean wild boars (Sus scrofa coreanus) hunted from mountains in Suncheon-si, Gwangyang-si, and Boseong-gun between 2009 and 2012 were examined for their visceral helminths. G. samoensis, as identified by morphological characteristics of the head and tail, were recovered from the small intestine of 51 (45.9%) wild boars. Worms were found from 7 of 28 wild boars (25.0%) from Suncheon-si, 40 of 79 (50.6%) from Gwangyang-si, and all 4 (100%) from Boseong-gun. The length of adult females was $7.2{\pm}0.5mm$, and the thickest part of the body measured the average $0.47{\pm}0.03mm$, while those of males were $6.52{\pm}0.19$ and $0.37{\pm}0.02mm$, respectively. The buccal cavity was equipped with a pair of large and bicuspid subventral lancets near the base of the capsule. The average length of spicules of males was $0.45{\pm}0.02mm$. By the present study, G. samoensis is recorded for the first time in southwestern regions of Korea. Additionally, morphological characteristics and identification keys provided in the present study will be helpful in the faunistic and taxonomic studies for strongylid nematodes in both domestic and wild pigs. The infection of G. samoensis apparently did not elicit pathologic lesions, as revealed by macroscopic observation during the autopsy of all wild boars in this study.

We investigated the developmental characteristics of super mealworm (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) at four different temperatures (25℃, 27℃, 30℃, and 33℃). The rearing conditions were 9L/15D, 65% RH, and 1,330 to 1,800 lux with wheat bran. The length of developmental period of 1 to 18 instars at each temperature showed that 30℃ was the shortest at 120.0±5.8 days, compared to that at 27℃ (132.6±10.7 days), 33℃ (136.5±9.2 days), and 25℃ (156.7±7.5 days). The larval developmental period was statistically significantly longer at 25℃, 27℃, and 30℃ compared to the length at 33℃. However, the death rate of larvae at 33℃ was 2.7-3.3 times higher than the rate at other temperatures. Body weight was heaviest at 30℃ followed by 27℃, 33℃, and 25℃. The patterns of head capsule, body capsule, and body length were similar to that of body weight. Regression analyses of developmental period, larval body weight, and length according to temperature revealed 29-30℃ as the most suitable temperature. The prepupa rate was 43.1% in 17 instars, 30.3% in 18 instars, 15.4% in 16 instars, 7.1% in 19 instars, 2.2% in 15 instars, and 1.9% in 20 instars, accounting for 88.8% in 16-18 instars. Prepupal period was longer at lower temperatures. For the average prepupal period of 15-18 instars, prepupa time was 18.8±1.9 days at 27℃, 18.8±2.3 days at 30℃, 23.0±2.4 days at 33℃, and 23.1±2.9 days at 25℃. The average pupal period of females and males was 11.1±2.2 and 11.6±2.4 days, respectively. The data indicate that the most suitable rearing temperature of super mealworm was 30℃.
The Chironomus(Diptera: Chironomidae) is a freshwater benthic invertebrate that is an important indicator organism used for environmental pollution and water quality monitoring. In this study, we performed morphological classification and genetic species identification using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene on mitochondrial DNA for an accurate species classification of Chironomus larvae found in tap water purification plants in Incheon, Korea. Twenty larvae in six water purification plants consist of four species, including twelve Chironomus kiiensis, six Chironomus flaviplumus, one Chironomus dorsalis, and one Polypedilum yongsanensis (not included Genus Chironomus). Morphological characteristics of each larvae were identified based on the head capsule, the mentum, the mandible, the antenna, and the claw. Based on the COI sequences of 21 individuals of 17 Chironomus species registered in NCBI Genbank, phylogenetic analysis indicated that the 20 individuals investigated in this study consist of the same clade with corresponding species of the high homology (99~100%) including C. kiiensis, C. flaviplumus, C. dorsalis, and P. yongsanensis. These results will be used as main classification indicator for monitoring freshwater ecosystems by providing integrated morphological and genetic information for the species identification of Korean Chironomus.
Two lepidopteran species, Matsumuraeses phaseoli (Matsumura) and Maruca vitrata (syn. M. testulalis) (Fabricius) were reared on artificial diets, and analyzed in their developmental characteristics. Photoperiod was supplied with 16L/8D for M. phaseoli and with 13L/11D for M. vitrata, respectively. Both species passed five larval instars with discrete sizes of head capsule width. In a constant environment ($25^{\circ}C$ and 65%RH), the developmental period of M. phaseoli egg, larva and pupa was 3.9, ca. 16.0 and 8.9 days, respectively, and over 80% of M. phaseoli larvae could develop into pupae, most of which emerged into adults. Newly laid eggs could be stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 15 days with over 50% hatchability. Similar developmental traits were shown in M. vitrata. However, a low temperature preservation was not applicable to M. vitrata eggs.
Purpose: Congenital dermoid cysts develop during the fusion of the embryo when the ectodermal tissue gets trapped in the line of fusion. Dermoid cysts of the head are rare lesions comprised of epidermal and mesodermal elements. Furthermore, dermoid cysts in the occipital area are extremely rare. Only a few cases of dermoid cysts in the posterior scalp have been reported. Especially, A bilateral, synchronous presentation in this location has not been reported previously in the literature. Methods: All 5 cases had a gradually enlarging mass of the posterior aspect of the scalp. The cysts were mobile, noncompressible, and non-tender, without evidence of an associated sinus tract, skin dimpling, discoloration, or communication with adjacent structures. The CT scan displayed a hypodense cystic lesions about -87 to +24 HU (Housefield units, average +3.2 HU) with hypodense capsule and no postcontrast enhancement. All tumors were found just under the skin, and were well encapsulated, so they were completely removed the mass with adjacent periosteum. Results: On gross findings, all tumors were oval-or round-shaped, and when the cystic tumor was cut open it presented a greasy and caseous substance. Histologically, all specimens contain desquamated squamous epithelium and keratin in the lumen and are encapsulated and lined by keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. And, all cases of posterior mass are the presence of adnexal structures. Conclusion: Appropriate diagnosis requires not only an index of suspicion for this rare tumor a very careful history and search for skin changes. Especially, CT can reveal the exact location of the cyst, its relationship with the adjacent structures. We think that occipital dermoids divide into superficial and deep type. In our cases, because they did not have intra-cranial involvement or fistula formation, they are superficial type. This report describes the clinical and operative aspects of the superficial dermoid cysts and provides a review of the literatures.
A 6-month-old, intact male Great Pyrenees (35 kg) was referred with 2 weeks continuous left forelimb lameness to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Center, College of Veterinary medicine, Chonbuk National University. The lameness became worse three days before being referred to the hospital. Upon the physical examination, the patient had pain when the left shoulder joint was palpated, and the lameness was visible in the left forelimb during ambulation on gait examination. There were no remarkable findings on radiological and neurological examination. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) was suspected based on medical history and gait tests. As a definitive diagnosis could not be made, exploratory arthroscopic surgery was performed to examine the inside of the shoulder joint. During the operation, mild bicipital tenosynovitis, synovitis and OCD which was located on the caudal medial area of humeral head were revealed. Arthroscopic procedures were used for the treating OCD, including the removal of the OCD flap and debriding of the subchondral defect until hemorrhaging by use of an electrical burr. The patient was discharged a day after surgery. After 2 weeks, the patient again presented at the hospital due to complications, including inflammation of the surgical lesion because of licking and seroma within the subcutaneous tissue. Antibiotics were administered and an aseptic bandage was applied. And simple surgical operations were performed for the removal of the cyst and seroma. Eleven weeks following arthroscopy, the lameness was completely resolved. Arthroscopy has the advantage of allowing gross examination inside the joint capsule. Due to this advantage, arthroscopy is one of the best advanced options for diagnosis in dogs with undiagnosed joint pain.
The Chironomidae is a benthic macroinvertebrate commonly found in freshwater ecosystems, along with Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, which can be used for environmental health assessments. There are approximately 15,000 species of Chironomidae worldwide, but there are limited studies on species identification of domestic Chironomidae larvae. In the present study, we carried out species classification of the Chironomidae larvae that found in Jeju's tap water purification plants using morphological characteristics and genetic identification based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of the mitochondrial DNA. Body shape, mentum, antenna, mandible in the head capsule, and claws were observed in the larvae for morphological classification. Analysis of 17 larvae collected from faucets and fire hydrants of domestic tap water purification plants revealed the presence of two species, including 14 Orthocladius tamarutilus and 3 Paratrichocladius tammaater. These results will aid the use of the criteria information about species classification of the Chironomidae for water quality management in water purification plants and diversity monitoring of freshwater environments.
