  • Background: One of the theoretical advantages of skeletonized internal mammary artery harvesting in coronary artery bypass surgery is to minimize the interruption of the sternal blood flow inevitably accompanied by internal mammary harvesting. A study using bone scan is designed to determine the effects of internal mammary artery harvesting technique on the sternal blood flow. Material and Method: From April 2002 to March 2003, 27 patients out of 48 patients who underwent the isolated coronary bypass surgery were enrolled into the study. The enrolled patients underwent bone scan in the preoperative period and postoperative period respectively. Bilateral internal mammary artery was used in 8 patients (BIMA group) and single left internal mammary artery in 19 patients (LIMA group). The patients in LIMA group were divided into two groups: LlMA_skel group, in whom left internal mammary artery was harvested in skeletonized fashion (n=12), and LlMA_ped group, in whom left internal mammary artery was harvested in pedicled fashion (n=7). After the bone scan, the region of interest (ROI) was created on the left of the sternum and the mirror image with the same pixel numbers was placed on the right half of the sternum. The mean counts per pixel on the left side of the sternum was compared with those on the right side and expressed as left to right ratio (L/R ratio). Result: In LIMA group, the L/R ratio decreased from 94.6$\pm$4.1% to 87.9$\pm$6.9% (p=0.003) after the operation as compared to BIMA group, in which no change of the L/R ratio was observed. The changed of the L/R ratio in LlMA_skel group and LlMA_ped group were from 95.3$\pm$4.2% to 88.3$\pm$7.7% and from 93.4$\pm$3.9% to 87.4$\pm$5.8% respectively. The % changes in L/R ratio were -7.44 $\pm$7.08 in LIMA_skel group and -6.17$\pm$9.08 in LiMA_ped group, which did not reach the statistical difference. Conclusion: Ipsilateral sternal blood flow is interrupted by internal mammary artery harvesting as evidenced by the decrease in L/R ratio after left internal mammary artery harvesting irrespective of the harvesting techniques. Skeletonized harvesting did not show superiority in respect to sternal blood flow as compared to pedicled harvesting.

  • This study was conducted to test the harvesting operation of two kinds of rice varieties such as Milyang #15 and Tong-il with a imported two furrow Japanese combine and was performed to find out the operational accuracy of it, the adaptability of this machine, and the feasibility of supplying this machine to rural area in Korea. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows; 1. The harvesting test of the Milyang #15 was carried out 5 times from the optimum harvesting operation was good regardless of its maturity. The field grain loss ratio and the rate of unthreshed paddy were all about 1 percent. 2. The field grain loss of Tong-il harvested was increased from 5.13% to 10.34% along its maturity as shown in Fig 1. In considering this, it was needed that the combine mechanism should be improved mechanically for harvesting of Tong-il rice variety. 3. The rate of unthreshed paddy of Tong-il rice variety of which stem was short was average 1.6 percent, because the sample combine used in this study was developed on basisof the long stem variety in Japan, therefore some ears owing to the uneven stem of Tong-il rice could nat reach the teeth of the threshing drum. 4. The cracking rates of brown rice depending mostly upon the revolution speed of the threshing drum(240-350 rpm) in harvesting of Tong-il and Milyang #15 were all below 1 percent, and there was no significance between two varieties. 5. Since the ears of Tong-il rice variety covered with its leaves, a lots of trashes was produced, especially when threshed in raw materials, and the cleaning and the trashout mechanisms were clogged with those trashes very often, and so these two mechanisms were needed for being improved. 6. The sample combine of which track pressure was $0.19kg/cm^2$ could drive on the soft ground of which sinking was even 25cm as shown in Fig 3. But in considering the reaping height adjustment, 5cm sinking may be afford to drive the combine on the irregular sinking level ground without any readjustment of the resaping height. 7. The harvesting expenses per ha. by the sample combine of which annual coverage area is 4.7 ha. under conditions that the yearly workable days is 40, percentage of days being good for harvesting operation is 60%, field efficiency is 56%, working speed is 0.273m/sec, and daily workable hours is 8 hrs is reasonable to spread this combine to rural area in Korea, comparing to the expenses by the conventional harvesting expenses, if mechanical improvement is supplemented so as to harvest Tong-il rice. 8. In order to harvest Tong-il rice, the two furrow combine should be needed some mechanical improvements that divider can control not to touch ears of paddy, the space between the feeding chain and the thrshing drum is reduced, trash treatment apparatus must be improved, fore and rear adjust-interval is enlarged, and width of track must be enlarged so as to drive on the soft ground.

  • The harvesting system in South Korea faces the problems of aging workers and high wages, so it is necessary to improve the operation system and train workers to use high-performance forestry machines. This study compared the effectiveness and costs of yarding and processing operations between a multi-operation system using a tower yarder (HAM300) and a processor (KESLA 20SH) with those of a single-system using a forestry combi-machine. A whole-tree (cable) yarding operation was conducted in the clear-cutting area located at Compartment 15, Gwangneung Experimental Forest, National Institute of Forest Science, and the productivity and cost of multi- and single-system were analyzed. The productivity of the single-system was 1.5 m3/PMH and 1.6 m3/PMH higher than that of the multi- system because the single-system produced 1 log/cycle more than the multi-system in the yarding operation. The cost was approximately 12.1% lower for the single-system (₩36,113/m3) than for the multi-system (₩41,065/m3). The costs of the single-system and multi-system were decreased by maximums of 22.6% and 15.9%, respectively, by decreasing the idle time.

  • The experiment was conducted to reduce the labor and production cost with the labor save of harvest in cultivating the onion using the machine and the results are as follows. On labor saving effect in transparent vinyl mulching, digging working hours per 10a in the case of using tractor are 55 min., fixing + turning time is 11 min.,the time of harvest is 66 min, digging working hours using cultivator are 90 min. and fixing + turning time is 9 min., but the time of hand harvesting is 693 min and 41 sec. and in digging labor saving effect, tractor shows 90% in the harvesting period and harvest by cultivator 86%. On nonmulching cases, the harvest by tractor takes 44 min. and that by cultivator does 75 min, and digging labor saving effect shows 93.6% in the tractor harvest and 89% in the cultivator harvest. Therefore, on the operation efficiency per hour, in the case of tractor with digger vinyl mulching and nonmulching show $0.091\sim0.136ha$ and in the case of cultivator with digger-both show $0.061\sim0.08ha$, but in the case of hand harvest, vinyl mulching and nonmulching are $0.008\sim0.009ha$, so in the mechanized harvest of onion, the harvest by tractor with digger is the best. On the cost and labor save for harvesting the onion with labor saving effect, tractor shows 19 hours and 26min./10a in vinyl mulching and 18 hours and 54min./10a in nonmulching, so it shows the short hours for harvesting. And labor saving effect shows 37% in comparison with 29 hours and 49 min. $\sim30$ hours and 38 min.($110,587\sim113,925won$) of the hand harvest, so the cost was reduced to $69,525\sim72,225won$. On the cultivator with diggers, vinyl mulching takes 19 hours and 49 min and nonmulching 20 hours and 2 min., so the labor saving effect and cost were reduced to $32\sim36%$($73,087\sim75,075$ won) in comparison with the hand harvest.

  • Purpose: Although the sural nerve is the most commonly used donor for autologous nerve graft, its morbidity after harvesting is sparsely investigated. The sural nerve being a sensory nerve, complications such as sensory changes in its area and neuroma can be expected. This study was designed to evaluate the donor site morbidity after sural nerve harvesting. Methods: Among the 13 cases, who underwent sural nerve harvesting between January 2004 and August 2009, 11 patients with proper follow up were included in the study. The collected data included harvested graft length, actual length of the grafted nerve, anesthetic and paresthetic area, presence of Tinel sign and symptomatic neuroma, and scar quality. Results: In 7 patients, no anesthetic area could be detected. Of the patients with a follow up period of more than 2 years, all the patients showed no anesthetic area except two cases who had a very small area of sensory deficit ($225mm^2$) on the lateral heel area, and large deficit ($4,500mm^2$) on the lateral foot aspect. The patients with a short follow up period (1~2 m) demonstrated a large anesthetic skin area ($6.760mm^2$, $12,500mm^2$). Only one patient had a Tinel sign. This patient also showed a subcutaneous neuroma, which was visible, but did not complain of discomfort during daily activities. One patient had a hypertrophic scar in the retromalleolar area, whereas the two other scars on the calf were invisible. Conclusion: After a period of 2 years the size of anesthetic skin in the lateral retromalleolar area is nearly zero. It is hypothesized that the size of sensory skin deficit may be large immediately after the operation. This area decreases over time so that after 2 years the patient does not feel any discomfort from nerve harvesting.

  • It is an anaerobic germ that Lactobacillus cell concentrated using ceramic membrane has high stability and long lifetime as compared with polymeric membrane. The effects of operating pressure, temperature, crossflow velocity on cell harvesting have been studied. Also the variation of flux and transmembrane pressure (TMP) with increasing concentration ratio and the change of TMP at constant concentration ratio (volumetric concentration factor: VCF) regarding the optimization have been examined. It showed that the permeate flux increased gradually with the increasing of transmembrane pressure, crossflow velocity, and volumetric concentration factor. The higher initial flux was due to the reduction of viscosity at elevated temperature. However, as operating time progressed, the effect of temperature was negligible since the effect of viscosity became minor. As a result, that operate in a constant concentration ratio, decreased degree could know that become slowly although the flux decreases according as operating time progressed. The flux is a very stable in the condition of constant VCF range. The yield of Latobaciilus (PS 406) which was cultivated at $37^{\circ}C$ was concentrated about 4.9{\times}10^9$ after operation.

  • Rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS), one of measures for on site rainwater management, have been promoted by laws, regulations and guidelines and have been increased. However, more evaluation of economic feasibility on RWHS is still needed due to seasonal imbalance of rainfall and little experiences and analysis on design and operation of RWHS. In this study, we investigated tank capacity of RWHS to secure economic validity considering catchment area and water demand, which is affected by building scale. Moreover, sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effect of design factors, cost items and increase rate of water service charge on economic feasibility. The BCR (benefit cost ratio) is proportional to the increase in tank capacity. It is increased steeply in small tank capacity due to the effect of cost and, since then, gently in middle and large tank capacity. In case of 0.05 in the rate of tank volume to catchment area and 0.005 in water demand to catchment area, BCR was over one from the tank capacity of 160 $m^{3}$ taking into account of private benefits and from the tank capacity of 100 $m^{3}$ taking into account of private and public benefits. Sensitivity analysis shows that increase of water demand can improve BCR values with little cost so that it is needed to extend application of rainwater use and select a proper range of design factor. Decrease of construction and maintenance cost reduced the tank volume to secure economic validity. Finally, increase rate of water service charge had considerable impact on economic feasibility.

  • Using high magnetic flux from a 60 Hz high-current cable, a 2 W wireless-powered energy harvesting receiver for sensor operation, internet of things (IoT) devices, and LED lights inside electrical cable tunnels is proposed. The proposed receiver comprises a copper coil with a high number of turns, a ring-shaped ferromagnetic core, a capacitor for compensating for the impedance of the coil in series, and a rectifier with various types of loads, such as sensors, IoT devices, and LEDs. To achieve safe and easy installation around the power cable, the proposed ring-shaped receiver is designed to easily open or close using a clothespin-shaped handle, which is made of highly-insulated plastic. Laminated silicon steel plates are assembled and used as the core because of their mechanical robustness and high saturation flux density characteristic, in which the thickness of each isolated plate is 0.3 mm. The series-connected resonant capacitor, which is appropriate for low-voltage applications, is used together with the proposed receiver coil. The concept of the figure of merit, which is the product weight and cost of both the silicon steel plate and the copper wire, is used for an optimized design; therefore, the weight of the fabricated receiver and the price of raw material is 750 gf and USD $2 each, respectively. The 2.2 W powering capability of the fabricated receiver was experimentally verified with a power cable current of $100A_{rms}$ at 60Hz.

  • In this paper, we designed micro-structured electromagnetic transducers for energy harvesting and verified the performance of proposed transducers using finite element analysis software, COMSOL Multiphysics. To achieve higher energy transduce efficiency, around the magnetic core material, three-dimensional micro-coil structures with high number of turns are fabricated using semiconductor fabrication process technologies. To find relations between device size and energy transduce efficiency, generated electrical power values of seven different sizes of transducers ($3{\times}3\;mm^2$, $6{\times}6\;mm^2$, $9{\times}9\;mm^2$, $12{\times}12\;mm^2$, $15{\times}15\;mm^2$, $18{\times}18\;mm^2$, and $21{\times}21\;mm^2$) are analyzed on various magnetic flux density environment ranging from 0.84 T to 1.54 T and it showed that size of $15{\times}15\;mm^2$ device can generate $991.5\;{\mu}W$ at the 8 Hz of environmental kinetic energy. Compare to other electromagnetic energy harvesters, proposed system showed competitive performance in terms of power generation, operation bandwidth and size. Since proposed system can generate electric power at very low frequency of kinetic energy from typical life environment including walking and body movement, it is expected that proposed system can be effectively applied to various pervasive computing applications including power source of embodied medical equipment, power source of RFID sensors and etc. as an secondary power sources.
