  • This study was investigated the effect of immature rhizome production according to harvest times-based treatment method for seed production of Gastrodia elata. The results revealed that when the tuber weight of G. elata harvested in spring (GEHS) was 100g100g, the rate of artificial fertilization, protocorm formation, and immature rhizome formation was 90.9%-94.8%, 3.1%-5.4%, and 10.1%-15.3%, respectively. When G. elata harvested in fall (GEHF) was treated at a low temperature for 4 weeks or more, the rate of artificial fertilization, protocorm formation, and immature rhizome formation was 70.4%-87.6%, 2.2%-2.6%, 8.7%-9.5%, respectively. Therefore, to produce seeds and immature rhizomes, GEHS must have tubers of more than 100 g, whereas GEHF requires breaking dormancy by low-temperature treatment for 4 weeks or more. Compared with those of GEHS, the rate of artificial fertilization, protocorm formation, and immature rhizome formation was lower in GEHF; however, it was higher than those in the natural germination state. Thus, it can be expected that G. elata can be produced throughout the year by ensuring that the seeds and immature rhizomes of G. elata are produced using a constant tuber weight and by breaking dormancy with low temperature treatment.

  • This research was implemented to investigate pre-harvest sprouting characteristics in two Korean rice cultivars, Shindongjin (SDJ) and Hopum (HP). The panicles of both varieties were sampled after 15 days after heading (DAH) to 60 DAH at intervals of 5 days. As soon as sampled, the panicles were imbibed in water for 14 days at 25C25C to determine the vigor and germination ability of seeds according to location on panicle. To investigate the cause of non-germination of seeds in panicles, tetrazolium test and dormancy breaking were performed. The preharvest sprouting of HP started at 20 DAH while that of SDJ began at 30 DAH. The germination of seeds located in high rank branches within a panicle and the terminal seeds within a branch were earlier and faster and the germination patterns were same in both cultivars. The times at more than 50% of germination in a panicle were 35 DAH (57.0%) in HP and 45 DAH (56.8%) in SDJ. Preharvest sprouting was more than 80% at 50 DAH (82.6% of HP, 92.3% of SDJ) and more than 99% at 60 DAH (99.5%, 99.4%, HP and SDJ). These results indicated that the rate of PHS in a panicle increased with accumulation of the days after heading. The cause of non-germinated seeds at 15-25 DAH in panicle was immature embryo. After 30 DAH, however, when the non-germinated seeds were hulled, they started to germinate due to dormancy breaking, in which the germination percentage was higher in SDJ than HP. In conclusion, the pre-harvest sprouting varied according to days after heading, the seed position on panicle, and the dormancy intensity of varieties.

  • The residue patterns of clothianidin and thiacloprid, insecticides registered in the ginseng, were investigated to predict pre-harvest residues limits (PHRL). Pesticides were treated under Korea GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) with the recommended dose (single dose) and twice of recommended dose (double dose). Samples were collected 11 times over 42 days (each 0, 2, 5, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 33, 42 days after treatment). Residues of clothinidin and thiacloprid were analyzed by UPLC/TQD. Biological half-life of clothinidin in single dose and double dose were 14.6 days and 10.2 days and that of thiacloprid were also 9.7 days and 11.2 days, respectively. The PHRL of ginseng on 10 days before harvest was 0.3 mg/kg in clothianidin and 0.18 mg/kg in thiacloprid.

  • This study was conducted to compare differences in fruit quality by harvest time of 'Fuji' apple fruit that was frozen on tree by unusual low temperature in that air temperature was under 3.5C3.5C for 7 hours. Fruits were harvested at 1 day before, and 2 days and 6 days after freezing damage, respectively. Harvest's soluble solid contents in all treatments was over 14Bx14Bx. Firmness and titratable acidity of fruit harvested after freezing damage was lower than those of fruit harvested before freezing damage. During cold storage, ethylene production of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction in the level of fruit quality during cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was more serious than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. The reduction of fruit quality during subsequent ambient temperature for 1 week after cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was higher than that of fruit harvested before freezing damage. In comparison of treatments that were harvested at different times after freezing damage, ethylene production and reduction in the level of fruit quality until 8 weeks of cold storage of fruit harvested at 6 days after freezing damage was lower than that of fruit harvested at 2 days after freezing damage. However, this difference by harvest time after freezing damage disappeared after 8 weeks of cold storage. Incidence of flesh browning was not affected by freezing at air temperature under 3.5C3.5C for 7 hours.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of growth stage and variety on the yield and quality of whole crop rice (WCR) at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA from 2003 to 2005. Two types of rice ("Chucheong" for food and "Hamasari" for feed) were harvested at six different growth stages (heading, flowering, milk, dough, yellow ripening and fully ripening stage). Crude protein content decreased with progressed maturity at harvest. As growth stage delayed, TDN (total digestible nutrient) content of all rice varieties increased. The average TDN content of two type of rice was about 60% (59.3) which was calculated from ADF(acid detergent fiber) content. The contents of ADF and NDF(neutral detergent fiber) decreased with harvest maturity. The highest DM(dry matter) yield was at the ripening stage (p<0.05) and "Chucheong" gave higher yields than for "Hamasari". In this experiment, the DM yield of all varieties was low. The yield of TDN followed a similar trend to DM yield. According to this results that dough to yellow ripening stage of harvest maturity will be recommendable as proper harvest time for whole crop rice silage.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influences of winter and summer pruning on the yield and fruit quality in southern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. hybrid) cv. 'Misty'. The 5-year-old southern highbush blueberry 'Misty' were used. The pruning treatments were as follows: 1) control (no pruning), 2) winter pruning (30% removed), and 3) winter pruning + summer pruning (Aug. 5). Fruits harvested for six times over the harvest season and measured yields, unmarketable fruit (defected and immature fruit), changes of each fruit weight and analyzed fruit characteristics, such as total sugar, total anthocyanin contents and total phenolic contents. The differential pruning treatments were not significant for fruit yields of southern highbush 'Misty'. No pruning treatment showed regular yields after the 2nd harvest, but the other pruning treatments were appeared that fruit yields were more concentrated on the 2nd~4th harvest time. Total sugar and total phenolic contents were observed the highest at the 4th time among the harvest period. No pruning treatment showed the highest unmarketable fruit yield at 57%, however, that of winter pruning and winter + summer pruning treatment occurred at 26%, 31%, respectively.

  • Changes in the contents of sugars and soluble solids and flavor rate of cooked kernels of three sweet com hybrids (Great Bell, Danok 1, and Golden Cross Bantam) and a super sweet corn hybrid (Crisp Super Sweet 720) were observed from 15 days after silking (DAS) to 27 or 33 DAS in 1985 and 1986 to determine the optimum harvest time. Sucrose content in all hybrids and fructose and glucose contents of Crisp Super Sweet 720 increased from 15 DAS to 21 or 24 DAS and then decreased. However, in the three sweet corn hybrids both fructose and glucose contents were highest at 15 DAS and then continuously decreased with maturity. At harvest time the major sugar component was sucrose and the highest total sugar content of Crisp Super Sweet 720 was 2-3 times higher than that of three sweet corn hybrids. Soluble solids were continuously increased with maturity in three sweet com varieties, but that of Crisp Super Sweet 720 increased up to 24 DAS, maintained the level through 30 DAS and then decreased. At harvest time soluble solids of three sweet com varieties were much higher than that of Crisp Super Sweet 720. The optimum harvest time seems to be about 27 DAS considering flavor rate and marketing conditions although the total sugar content was lower than those of earlier harvests. Soluble solids but not total sugars were positively correlated with the flavor of cooke6 com harvested at different growth stages in the same variety. Total sugars were not correlated with soluble solids or negatively correlated depending on hybrids.

  • In Chrysanthemum ×× morifolium, 30 days of continuous short days (SD) are required for flowering. The effects of alternating short day (SD) - long day (LD) - SD treatments was tested in 5 daisy-like single cultivars, 'Limelight', 'Sunlight', 'Candle Light', 'Firebrand', and 'Twilight', Thee other decorative type cultivars, 'Spirit', 'SunburstSpriit', 'Mandalay', and 'Illini Harvest' was also included. Short day treatment was given for 30 days (control: 30SD) and 5 or 10 LD were interposed following 5 or 10 SD. Different responses were noticed when data from all cultivars were combined, showing that flowering was delayed and the number of ray florets were increased by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD. The number of ray florets, 40 florets in 'Firebrand' and 60.8 florets in 'Candlelight' was increased significantly by 5 SD-10 LD-25 SD as compared to the control. There were no adverse effects by SD-LD-SD treatment, except for the delay in flowering time from 6 to 7 days. The number of ray florets in 'Illini Harvest' and 'Limelight' were, however, not increased by any SD-LD-SD treatments. Cultivar dependent responses should further be investigated in other newly available cultivars, and this information could be used to breed new cultivars.

  • The optimal determination of seeding rate is critical to minimizing uncertainties about the large variations observed in forage quality and productivity when alfalfa is cultivated under different geographical areas and growing conditions. The objective of this investigation was to provide information about the proper seeding rate according to harvest timing for alfalfa cultivation in the Northern regions of Korea. Alfalfa was sown in September 2018 at a seeding rate of 20, 30 or 40 kg/ha and harvested four times in 2019: May 3, July 2, September 11, and October 13. Regardless of seeding rate, alfalfa plant height was longest at the third harvest (113 cm) and the shortest in the last annual harvest (43.8 cm). However, seeding rate had no effect on alfalfa plant height at any harvest. Forage relative feed value was increased in the first cutting but decreased in the third cuttings as seeding rate increased. However, seeding rate had slight effect on alfalfa forage quality components at the second and fourth cuttings. Total annual DM and crude protein production (in 4 harvests) was greater at higher seeding rates. Plots seeded at a rate of 40 kg/ha produced on average 1,257 and 2,620 kg/ha more forage (DM basis) than those seeded at a rate of 30 or 20 kg/ha, respectively. Forage DM production at the first, second, third, and fourth harvests accounted for 36.1, 24.0, 27.1, and 12.8 % of total annual DM production, respectively. Overall, small differences were seen when alfalfa seeding rate was different but maximum forage DM production (in four harvests) was detected when seeding rate was 40 kg/ha. These data could be useful to the alfalfa growers by allowing them to make more accurate trade-offs between seed price and the expected magnitude of forage yield gains in order to select the best seeding rate.

  • In order to breed a new P. eryngii cultivar with high temperature tolerance trait to cope with climate change, strains and cultivars were characterized at 20C20C that is 5C5C higher than normal condition followed by screening for the characteristics such as required days to harvest, quality and yield. Monokaryons from the selected strains were crossed. Da32×KNR232215Da32×KNR232215 derived from the crosses between KNR2322 having characteristics of short growing day and Da(Ga5Na54×KNR23127Ga5Na54×KNR23127) having charateristics of high guality and yield at 20C20C, showed 14.9 days for harvest, 120.6 g yield, and 7.0 quality in the first trial. The strains were named as Taeyangsongi and cultivated on a large scale to compare with Kenneutari No. 2 at a mushroom farm. Yield of Taeyangsongi (109 g) was significantly different(P=0.001) from Kenneutari No.2. Quality of the new (6.6) and the reference cultivar (3.5) was also statistically different (P=0.001) The brightness of pileus of Taeyangsongi (59.5) was 10 points less than the reference cultivar due to which it has an inability to bear high temperature stress. Thus, PCR reactions with URP2 discriminated between Taeyansongi and reference cultivars (Keneutari No. 2 and Aeryni).
