  • The nanoindentation technique is widely used to investigate the mechanical properties of nano-microscale materials. The nanoindentation method for assessing mechanical properties at low loads and shallow depths is already well established fur the characterization of thin films as well as bulk materials. In this study, we evaluated residual stress in DLC and Au thin films usign nanoindentation technique with a new stress-relaxation model. Moreover, We suggest a composite hardness equation and quantify the magnitude of hardness increase by using an equation based on the interface hardness and the interface thickness, derived by comparing results derived from this equation and those determined in nanoindentation tests. Finally, We present an indentation size effect (ISE) model that extends the available contact depth for ISE application down to several tens of nanometers by considering the tip bluntness effect.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hot forging ratio and solution treatment temperature on the mechanical properties of incoloy 825 alloy. With an increasing of the hot forging ratio, grain size and range of grain size was decreased. With an increasing of the solution treatment temperature after 90% forging, grain size and range of grain size was increased. Cr carbides and Ti nitrides was precipitated at below $900^{\circ}C$ and volume fraction of precipitate was increased with an decreasing of the solution treatment temperature. With an increasing of the hot forging ratio, hardness, tensile strength and elongation, toughness was increased. With an increasing of the solution treatment temperature after 90% forging, hardness and strength was increased, elongation and toughness was decreased by grain refinement. With an increasing of the forging ratio, effect of solution treatment temperature on the hardness, strength and elongation was small, but on the toughness was large.

  • For the accurate measurements of hardness in a material, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the effects of test variables on the accuracy of hardness value. For the rebound hardness test, major test variables are the radius of hammer ball tip, type of backing materials, size and roughness of the specimen. In this study, effects of these variables on Equo-Tip hardness value were investigated. Hardness measurements were carried out using WC balls with various sizes of worn-ot zone. The sample materials chosen for the experiments were commercial standard hardness blocks and SM45C steel bars subjected to either normalization or quench and temper treatments. As backing materials, aluminum, steel and rubber plates were used in all the experiments. Experimental results show that for the accurate measurements of Equo-tip hardness, it is necessary to use the hammer ball with a worn-out zone parameter of less than 0.23, and the recommended minimum thickness and width of the specimen are 25mm and 70mm, respectively. Further for the surface preparation, the specimens need to be polished with an emery paper of No. 400 or finer, and for the backing matrials, it is recommended to use steels or rubbers.

  • Intense electron beam was irradiated on the CrAlN thin films deposited in SKD61 under different incident energies and then the effect of electron beam irradiation on the enhancement of surface hardness and wear resistance was investigated. Surface hardness and wear resistance of the CrAlN films is increased proportionally with the electron beam energy. While the surface hardness of as deposited CrAlN film is Hv ($0.1g{\cdot}f$) 450, the hardness oflectron irradiated (600 eV) film is Hv ($0.1g{\cdot}f$) 2050. The width of wear track of the untreated SKD61 is $X\_{\mu}m$, while the track-width of the electron irradiated CrAlN (600 eV) film is $787{\mu}m$, respectively. From the observed results, it is supposed that the optimal electron beam irradiation can be one of the useful surface treatment technologies for the enhancement of surface hardness and wear resistance of CrAlN/SKD61, simultaneously.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of resin infiltration technique on color and surface hardness of white spot lesion (WSL) with various degrees of demineralization. Materials and Methods: Ten human upper premolars were cut and divided into quarters with a $3{\times}4mm$ window on the enamel surface. Each specimens were separated into four groups (n = 10) and immersed in demineralization solution to create WSL: control, no treatment (baseline); 12 h, 12 hr demineralization; 24 h, 24 hr demineralization; 48 h, 48 hr demineralization. Resin infiltration was performed to the specimens using Icon (DMG). $CIEL^*a^*b^*$ color parameters of the enamel-dentin complex were determined using a spectroradiometer at baseline, after caries formation and after resin infiltration. Surface hardness was measured by Vickers Micro Hardness Tester (Shimadzu, HMV-2). The differences in color and hardness among the groups were analyzed with ANOVA followed by Tukey test. Results: Resin infiltration induced color changes and increased the hardness of demineralized enamel. After resin infiltration, there was no difference in color change (${\Delta}E^*$) or microhardness among the groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There was no difference in the effect of resin infiltration on color and hardness among groups with different extents of demineralization.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the experimental and commercial fluoride varnishes on the Vickers hardness of bovine teeth. The experimental fluoride varnishes with 5 wt.% NaF were fabricated using Bis-GMA or rosin as the resin base. The components were mixed with over-head stirrer under warming up in a double boiler for 30 minutes. Four commercial fluoride varnishes (V-varnish, Flor-opal, Cavity shield, Fluor protector) were compared with the experimental fluoride varnishes. Vickers hardness was measured on the labial surface of bovine anterior teeth after applying fluoride varnish on 5th and 30th day. The surface of bovine teeth was observed with a scanning electron microscope before and after applying fluoride varnish and the change of the components on the bovine teeth surface was measured with EDX. In terms of hardness, the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish showed significantly higher hardness on the 5th and 30th day than the control (bovine teeth without fluoride treatment)(p<0.05). EDX results showed that the fluoride content on the surface of bovine teeth treated with the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish was highest on the 1st and 10th day. The higher hardness and fluoride content of experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish can be considered to be used as an effective fluoride varnish to prevent dental caries.

  • Pulse electroplating was studied to form nanocrystal structure effectively by changing plating current density and duty cycle. When both of plating current density and duty cycle were decreased from $100mA/cm^2$ and 70% to $50mA/cm^2$ and 30%, the P content in the Ni matrix was increased almost up to the composition of $Ni_3P$ compound and the grain growth after annealing was retarded as well. The as-plated hardness values ranging from 660 to 753 HV are mainly based on the formation of nanocrystal structure. On the other hand, the post-anneal hardness values ranging from 898 to 1045 HV, which are comparable to the hardness of hard Cr, are coming from how competition worked between the precipitation of $Ni_3P$ and the grain coarsening. According to the ANOVA and regression analysis, the plating current density showed more strong effect on nanocrystal size and film hardness than the duty cycle.

  • PURPOSE. This study inspects the effect of incorporating halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin on its flexural strength, hardness, and Young's modulus. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four groups of acrylic resin powder were prepared. One group without HNTs was used as a control group and the other three groups contained 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 wt% HNTs. For each one, flexural strength, Young's modulus and hardness values were measured. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for comparison (P<.05). RESULTS. At lower concentration (0.3 wt%) of HNT, there was a significant increase of hardness values but no significant increase in both flexural strength and Young's modulus values of PMMA resin. In contrast, at higher concentration (0.6 and 0.9 wt%), there was a significant decrease in hardness values but no significant decrease in flexural strength and Young's modulus values compared to those of the control group. CONCLUSION. Addition of lower concentration of halloysite nanotubes to denture base materials could improve some of their mechanical properties. Improving the mechanical properties of acrylic resin base material could increase the patient satisfaction.

  • Transformation behavior and hardness change were studied in five kinds of self-control steels; standard, high V, modified Ni, W, and high C-Ni steels. In the cooling rates of $10-100^{\circ}C/min$, the primary ferrite and bainite were formed, and the amount of the former increased with decreasing cooling rate. The bainite transformation temperature, Bs, was measured as 570, 560, 590, 575, and $565^{\circ}C$ in experimental steels, respectively, which was similar to the calculated temperature. The self-control, that is, the consistency in hardness, was observed, in which the hardness increased with the decrease in Bs. In the case of hot compression testing, the lower temperature deformation led to the enhancement in hardness.

  • Invar-type austenitic cast irons are being used as low thermal expansive materials because of its good low thermal expansion characteristics and castability despite its low hardness. The effects of alloying elements such as Cr, Ti, V, and Mo on hardness and linear thermal expansion coefficient of the invar-type austenitic cast irons were investigated. A combined use of V and Mo addition was found to be the most effective for the improvement of hardness without causing an increase in the thermal expansion coefficient. With a combined addition of 4.6wt%V and 3.8wt%Mo, the hardness increased up to 180HB and the thermal expansion coefficient was kept at a relatively low value of $4.6{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range from room to $250^{\circ}C$.
