In this study, flow patterns in the ice-harbor fishway were analyzed according to fluctuations of the upstream water level, an increase of weir interval, and the presence or absence of orifices using a three-dimensional commercial numerical model, Flow-3D. In order to prove the suitability of the numerical simulation results, the flow velocity and flow rate at the exit of the fishway were observed using a 3D ultrasonic velocimetry on an actual ice-harbor fishway installed downstream of the Daegok bridge in Gyeongan-Cheon. Four types of turbulence modules can be selected for the Flow-3D model. As a result of verification with observation data, the RNG model best described the flow characteristics in the ice-harbor fishway. The velocity structure in the fishway according to fluctuations of the upstream water level was simulated. The results showed that the plunging flow and the streaming flow were mixed at the lowest water level. When the water level increased about 10 cm or more from the lowest water level, the plunging flow disappeared in all pools and only the streaming flow occurred. Contrary to expectations, even when the water level is rose a little, the flow simply occurred mainly on the streaming flow. If the interval between the weirs is increased, both the plunging flow and the streaming flow are showed continued even if the water level rises. In addition, compared to the case where there are no orifices at the bottom of the weirs, the plunging flow tends to be generated in several pools. It is necessary to prevent blocking orifices through active management so that various flow patterns in the fishway can be generated in multiple pools.

Arrangement of the facilities for improving harbor functions depends on sea and land conditions such as the ship's arrival and departure conditions, waves and tide. And the plan and the size of the facilities depend much on harbor and marine environment condition such as cargo quantity, ship size, ship traffic and seawater circulation. Among these, waves have so much effect on a breakwater design that it is the most important to understand their characteristics and to apply them to breakwater design. Therefore, to analyze the effect of waves characteristics over a rubble mound breakwater, we have calculated wave pressure by using numerical analysis at each tide level and have analyzed the effect of wave pressure on structure stability by conducting the stability analysis with the wave pressure. As a result, it is found that during low and mean tide level time the biggest wave pressure is estimated near calm water level. But during high tide time, the biggest wave pressure is estimated in front of capping. And the stability analysis indicates also that a structure is most unstable when low tide time wave pressure is acting on. After reviewing the stability of a structure by applying vertical and horizon wave forces, it is concluded that safety factor is lower than ordinary time(max. about 15%), is also reviewed when designing a rubble mound breakwater.

Drop structures that span the entire width of channels are installed to alleviate channel grades and have been constructed widely in Korean rivers. Aprons are normally installed and integrated with drop structures and bed protections are added on the downstream part of aprons to protect both drop structures and aprons. Scour occurring on aprons is reported to provide various habitats such as ripples and pools in natural rivers. This study focuses on the scour characteristics on an apron integrated with a drop structure and the subsidence of a riprap protection. The scour depth on the downstream part of the drop structure is found to increase with the increase of unit discharge; however, to decrease as the tail water depth gets deeper. Based on the experimental measurements, the subsidence of the riprap scour protection is calculated with respect to the thickness of riprap. Finally, the dimensionless empirical equation to quantify the subsidence of the riprap scour protection without filters at downstream of the vertical drop is suggested.

In this study, the bearing pressure on the rubble mound of a gravity-based harbor structure with an arbitrarily shaped bottom was targeted. Assuming that the bottom of the structure is a rigid body, the rubble mound was modeled as a linear spring uniformly distributed on the bottom that resists compression only, and the bearing pressure evaluation formula was derived. It was confirmed that there were no errors in the derivation process by showing that when the bottom was square, the derived equation was converted to the equation used in the design. In addition, the validity of the derived equation was proven by examining the behavior and convergence value of the bearing pressure when an arbitrarily shaped bottom converges into a square one. In order to examine the adequacy of the method used in the current design, the end bearing pressure for the pre-designed breakwater cross-section was calculated and compared with the values in the design document. As a result, it was shown that the method used for design was not appropriate as it gave unsafe results. In particular, the difference was larger when the eccentricity of the vertical load was large, such as in the case of extreme design conditions.

In designing the coastal structures, the accurate estimation of wave forces on them is very important. Recently, the empirical formulae such as Goda formula are widely used to estimate wave forces, as well as 2-D hydraulic and numerical model tests. But, sometimes, these estimation methods mentioned above seem to be unreasonable to predict 3-D structure of wave pressure on the coastal structures with 3-D plane arrangement in the real coastal area. Especially, in case of consideration of phase difference at harbor and seaward sides of the large-sized coastal structures like a composite breakwater, it is easily expected that the real wave pressures on each section of coastal structure have 3-D distribution. A new numerical model of 3-D Large Eddy Simulation, which is applicable to permeable structure, is developed to clarify the 3-D structure of wave pressures acting on coastal structure. The calculated wave forces on 3-D structure installed on the submerged breakwater show in good agreement with the measured values. In this study, the composite breakwater is adopted as a representative structure among the large-sized coastal structures and the 3-D structure of wave pressures on it is discussed in relation to the phase difference at harbor and seaward sides of it due to wave diffraction and transmitted wave through rubble mound.

Nowadays, small and medium-sized earthquakes occur frequently in the west coast of Korea. The earthquake induced damages on the harbor structure such as quay wall possibly make a severe impact on national economy. Therefore, not only a seismic design for the structures but warning system for seismic damage right after the occurrence of earthquake should be developed. In this study, seismic fragility analysis was performed to be given to earthquake damage prediction system for quay wall structures in Busan and Incheon harbor. Four types of structures such as pier-type, caisson type, counterfort type, block-type were analyzed and fragility curves of functional performance level and collapse prevention level based on displacement criteria were found. Regression analyses by using the results of the two ports were done for possible use in other port structures.
This study undertook research on the sections of 90 harbor structures which applied a pile-type soil improvement using the soil-cement pile and then, determined the minimum replacement rate for each section, showing sufficient stability in all relevant studies including numerical analysis. The reliability of the numerical analysis was verified by a centrifuge model test. As a result of the study, it was revealed that when the foundation soil is too soft ($s_u$ = under 15 kPa), it is unsuitable to apply a pile-type ground improvement to a soil improvement regardless of types of super structures. And a pile-type soil improvement was found to be suitable for a harbor structure with the relative stiffness ratio (n) of less than 50~75 at a maximum and the 2~3 MPa strength of the soil-cement pile. Furthermore the governing factor for the minimum replacement rate for the pile-type soil improvement was turned out to be the allowable horizontal displacement. Therefore, the primary review to see the applicability of the pile-type soil improvement requires the evaluation of horizontal displacements.
Mobile Harbor(MH) is a new paradigm for maritime transport system introduced in Korea, the target of which is to carry out ship-to-ship cargo operation rapidly and effectively even under a condition of sea state 3. A MH ship is moored alongside a large container vessel anchored at the defined anchorage and also equipped with gantry cranes for handling containers. The MH study concerned includes rapid container handling system, optimum design for floating structure, hybrid berthing & cargo operation system, design for cargo handling crane, etc. This paper is to deal with a conceptual design of a stabilized mooring system and mooring equipment under a condition of ship-to-ship mooring. In this connection, we suggest a positioning control winch system in order to control heave motions of the MH ship which is to add constant brakepower and stabilized function to an auto-tension winch and mooring equipment used currently in large container ships.

In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to investigate the stability of armor units at harbor side slope for rubble mound structures. The armor units on the rear slope were rocks. The Korean design standard for harbor and fishery port suggested the design figures that showed the ratio of the armor weight for each location of rubble mound structures and it could be known that the same weight ratio was needed to the sea side and rear side slope of rubble mound structures. The crest elements were commonly applied to the design process of rubble mound structures in Korea and the investigation of the effects of super structures would be needed. The damage rate (S =2) was applied and the stable wave height was measured for each test condition. The results were suggested as the armor weight ratio of the rear side slope(armor rock) to the sea side slope (tetrapod) in relation to the relative crest height.

The use of steel sheet pile walls as barrier walls have the temporary for coffer dam, retaining wall in excavation, etc., but also permanent of semi-permanent for harbor construction, containment systems, vertical barrier systems for waste disposal (landfill) or subway in excavarion. In all these applicaions the resistance of the structure to seepage plays an important role. Also the stability and longevity of the construction, the possibility of permanent control and survey make the steel sheet pile wall a nearly perfect vertical barrier from a technical and economical point of view.
