  • In order to examine the effect of cementite precipitated on the steel surface on the carburizing rate, the carburizing process was carried out at various boost times to measure the mass gain and carbon flux, phase analysis and carbon concentration analysis were performed on the surface of the carburized specimen. In the case of the only boost type, the longer the boost time, the more the mass gain by the diffused carbon follows the parabolic law and tends to increase. In particular, as the boost time increased, the depth of cementite precipitation and the average size of cementite on the steel surface increased. At a boost time of 7 min, the fraction of cementite precipitated on the surface is 7.32 vol.%, and the carburizing rate of carbon into the surface (surface-carbon flux) is about 17.4% compared to the calculated value because the area of the chemical (catalyst) where the carburization reaction takes place is reduced. The measured carbon concentration profile of the carburized specimen tended to be generally lower than the carbon concentration calculated by the model without considering precipitated cementite. On the other hand, in the pulse type, the mass gain by the diffused carbon increased according to the boost time following a linear law. At a boost time of 7 min, the fraction of cementite precipitated on the surface was 3.62 vol.%, and the surface-carbon flux decreased by about 4.1% compared to the calculated value. As a result, a model for predicting the actual carbon flux was presented by applying the carburization resistace coefficient derived from the surface cementite fraction as a variable.

  • Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Bolaven incident on the west sea of Korea in 2012 are performed using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the various coasts of Korea. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency and the Korea Meteorological Administration. Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and the calculated results are compared and analyzed. The waves and storm surges calculated using JMA-MSM wether field agree well with the observations because of the better reflection of the topography and the pre-background weather field. On the other hand, the calculated results based on the weather fields produced using the JTWC best track information show some limitations of the general trend of the variations of wave and surge heights. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

  • The author extracted 300 children as a control group and 300 children as an observation group from Korean primary school children which were aged 9 to 11, and surveyed the dental caries experience and oral hygiene condition. Children in a control group had not been served wit school meal. On the other hand, children in an observation group were served with school meal. The average number of caries experienced permanent teeth per mouth and the oral hygiene indices were calculated from the collected data and compared with each other. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The DMFT rate was 15.93% in the observation group and 10.33% in the control group. 2. The Oral Hygiene Index was 1.04 in the observation group and 1.60 in the control group. 3. It couldn't be made a decision that school meal service was direct cause to increase the occurrence of dental caries on the permanent teeth in Korean primary school children.

  • If we want to analyze the motion of a body in fluid, we should use rigid-body dynamics and fluid dynamics together. Even if the rigid-body and fluid dynamics are each self-consistent, there arises the problem of self-similar structure in the equation of motion when the two dynamics are coupled with each other. When the added mass is greater than the mass of a body, the calculated motion is divergent because of its self-similar structure. This study showed that the above problem is an inherent problem. This problem of self-similar structure may arise in the equation of motion in which the fluid dynamic forces are treated as external forces on the right hand side of the equation. A reconfiguration technique for the equation of motion using pseudo-added-mass was proposed to resolve the self-similar structure problem; specifically for the case when the fluid force is expressed by integration of the fluid pressure.

  • Geometry relaxation effects on the formation of benzene excimer were investigated by means of ab initio calculation at SOS-CIS($D_0$)/aug-cc-pVDZ level. In the case of T-shaped dimer configuration, intermolecular interactions in the excited states are found to be nearly the same as those in the ground state and structural deformations are limited within a single molecule; the geometry relaxation effects are then negligible and singlet-triplet energy gap remains constant. As for face-to-face eclipsed dimer, on the other hand, both molecules undergo structural change. As a result, intermolecular interactions in the excited states are significantly different than those in the ground state. Although the intermolecular distances obtained from potential energy curve calculation with frozen molecular structures are in qualitative agreement, the excited-state binding energies are notably overestimated with respect to those at optimized structures. In particular, the effects are calculated to be larger in $T_1$ state and hence singlet-triplet energy gap, which reduces markedly in this configuration, is underestimated without relaxation.

  • The $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ algebraic stress model (KEASM) was applied to atmospheric dispersion simulation using the Lagrangian particle dispersion model and was compared with the most popular turbulence closure model in the field of atmospheric simulation, the Mellor-Yamada (MY) model. KEASM has been rarely applied to atmospheric simulation, but it includes the pressure redistribution effect of buoyancy due to heat and momentum fluxes. On the other hand, such effect is excluded from MY model. In the simulation study, the difference in the two turbulence models was reflected to both the turbulent velocity and the Lagrangian time scale. There was little difference in the vertical diffusion coefficient $\sigma$$_{z}$. However, the horizontal diffusion coefficient or calculated by KEASM was larger than that by MY model, coincided with the Pasquill-Gifford (PG) chart. The applicability of KEASM to atmospheric simulations was demonstrated by the simulations.s.

  • This study deals with concentration and light extinction of atmospheric aerosol in Seoul. From the measured aerosol size distribution for particle diameter ranging from 0.01 $\mum \sim 1.0 \mum$, extinction coefficient is calculated using the Mie theory. The results show that the diurnal variation of aerosol concentration, in general, reveals the lowest concentration in early morning and afternoon, while the highest at about 8 O'clock owing to the heavy traffic and accumulation of air pollution in the low atmosphere. However, aerosol concentration and extinction coefficient on April 7 give low values due to the advective wind. On the other hand, high aerosol concentration and extinction coefficenat are recorded on April 10 although solar radiation is weak. From the distribution of extinction coefficient we can find that aerosol particles of 0.1 $\mum \sim 1.0 \mum$ in diameter are highly effective on light extinction.

  • Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRBs) are the most violent event in the universe, whose detection rate is a few in a day. The spectral lag, which is commonly observed in the observed light curves of GRBs, is a difference in arrival times of the high-energy and low-energy photons. The relation between the spectral lag and the luminosity of the observed GRBs is shown to be anti-correlated in previous studies. In reported relations to date, the isotropic luminosity has been assumed. On the other hand, GRBs are likely to emit its energy through a beamed jet. In this study, we attempt to obtain the relation between the spectral lag and the collimation-corrected luminosity. We have calculated collimation-corrected luminosities and opening angles using the observed light curves taken from a database of Swift/BAT, XRT. We expect to increase its significance level by expanding a sample size compared with those previously analyzed.

  • In order to compute the radiated sound from a vibrating structure, the Rayleigh's integral equation has to be derived from the Helmholtz equation using Green's function. Generally, the surface velocity in the Rayleigh's integral equation uses the root mean square(rms) velocity. The calculation value is too large, because it's not considered cancelation. On the other hand. using the complex velocity, the sound pressure is calculated too small, because it considers that sound is perfectly canceled out. Therefore, this thesis proposes a correction factor(CF) which considers vibration modes and the method by which to calculate the radiating sound pressure. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental values, and the proposed method can be verified with confluence.

  • The fatigue life and crack penetration behavior of high strength steel have been studied in detail both experimentally and analytically. The fatigue crack shape of a smooth specimen is almost semicircular, while a specimen with stress concentration becomes semielliptical according to stress concentration shape. The aspect ratio of smooth specimens calculated using the Newman-Raju's formular is smaller than the value obtained from the experiment. On the other hand, the aspect ratio of the stress concentration specimen shows a good agreement with experimental results. It is found that the crack growth behavior on the back surface after the penetration is unique and can be divided into three stages ; rapid growth region, constant growth region and acceleration growth region. By using the K value suggested in this study, the particular crack growth behavior and crack shape can be estimated quantitatively.
