• Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and adolescents in the last decade. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. There is no single or simple solution to the childhood obesity epidemic, but to learn that obesity is closely related to lifestyle factors including poor fitness and physical inactivity as well as prolonged sitting time in conjunction with westernized dietary habits. In addition to a healthy and balanced diet, promotion of physical activity combined with carefully supervised resistance exercise training, and reduced screen time is a primary recommendation for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and adolescents. This review provides evidence based data to support this multiple-step physical activity strategy as the most effective and preventive means against childhood obesity.

 • This study was carried out to investigate the self-reported health and eating habit of the elite female adolescent athletes in Incheon. The subjects were 102 elite female athletes of middle and high schools located in Inchon. A self-administered Questionnaire was used for this cross-sectional survey. Statistical analysis by two-way ANOVA was performed to discriminate between the main effects of age (as middle and high school athletes) and sports type, and their interaction. As use of nutritional supplements, 35.8% of the total subjects took vitamin and iron supplements and 62.5% of field and track athletes took vitamin and iron supplements. While mental stress related to exercise was much in fencing > shooting > field and track > swimming athletes, physical burden during training was higher in swimming > field and track > fencing > shooting athletes. More than half of the subjects showed irregular menstrual cycle. As the most severe problem of eating habit, they reported skipping meal > overeating > prejudiced meal > preference to salty and spicy foods. More than half of the subjects skipped meal over three times per week. Fencing and shooting athletes showed very significantly higher frequency of skipping meal and more irregular breakfast time compared to those of other sport types. As for snack, they ate cookies, carbonated drink, chocolate, candy > milk, yogurt, ice cream > cake, bread, rice cake > fried noodle > hamburger, pizza. Therefore, nutritional counseling and education by sport type are necessary for health and good eating habit of these elite female adolescent athletes.

 • Background : Generally $VO_2$ max is higher in treadmill exercise than cycle ergometer exercise. According to Hassen and Wasserman, $VO_2$ max with treadmill exercise is higher at ratio of 1.11 than that with cycle ergometer. $VO_2$ max also is influenced by race, sociocultural background, exercise habit In this study, $VO_2$ max and AT were evaluated between Treadmill and cycle exercise in male Korean college students. Method: Study subjects were 44 male college students. We randomized them into 2 groups; 24 students did treadmill exercise at first and 1 week later did cycle ergometer. Another 20 students did in opposite method. They made symptom limited maximal exercise. Author defined maximal exercise as followings: 1) respiratory exchange ratio(RER)> 1.1, 2) plateau>30 sec, 3) heart rate reserve(HRR) <15%, or 4) breathing reserve (BR)<30%. Otherwise their results are excluded as submaximal exercise. Anaerobic threshold(AT) was estimated by V-slope method. Results: $VO_2$ max and AT was $45.1{\pm}6.66m\ell$/kg/min and $26.0{\pm}6.78m\ell$/kg/min in treadmill and $34.9{\pm}5.89m\ell$/kg/min, $19.5{\pm}4.77m\ell$/kg/min in Cycle Ergometer. The measured-$VO_2max$/pred-$VO_2max$ was $98.8{\pm}13.24%$ in treadmill; $84.4{\pm}13.42%$ in cycle ergometer. Comparing $VO_2$ max in treadmill with that obtained by Hassen's method, there were significant differences.(p<0.01). At maximal exercise there were differences in HRR, $O_2$/pulse, BR, $V_E$/MVV, $V_E/VCO_2$ between treadmill and cycle but not in $V_E/VO_2$, Vd/Vt, Ti/Ttot. At AT there were differences in $O_2$/pulse, BR, $V_E$/MVV, Ti/Ttot between treadmill and cycle, otherwise not. Conclusion: According to the result of this study, there are larger gap between treadmill and cycle ergometer in normal Korean adults than foreign data, and it needs further study to obtain reference value of Korea.

 • Religions have the characteristics ultimately to solve the problems of human beings. These religions are externally expressed through the behaviors called rituals and contain substantially symbolic meanings. A ritual is a kind of transcendental experiences and infinite experience conducted in the reality and formalizes external behaviors in front of the presence of holy subject. Therefore, there is no religion without rituals. However, there are insignificant differences between religions or sects in performing rituals. The purpose of a ritual for human beings who have access to the holy world and this world is to keep their balances not to excessively indulge in this world. Moreover, a ritual plays the role to exercise strict control over the daily life of religious people who are in the holy world but easily tend to be accustomed to force of habit. These rituals are closely related to belief. Belief(Conviction) is one of core elements of religion. Belief as the unique activity among various behaviors of human beings illustrates another characteristics of human beings. The common efforts in the history of mankind to overcome cultural or geographical differences through existing religions can be represented by belief, that is, the faith. On the basis of background described above, this study aims to identify the meaning of rituals and dynamic structure of belief as examining the rituals of Daesoonjinrihoe.

 • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of continuous muscle strengthening applied to the antagonist of the sternocleidomatoid, upper trapezius, and pectoralis major, which are the shortened muscles of forward head posture(FHP) subjects, and Evjenth-Hamberg stretching(EHS) applied to the shortened muscles on changes in pressure pain threshold(PPT). Twenty subjects were divided into the continuous antagonist strengthening(CAS) group(n=10) and the EHS group(n=10), and each group performed its respective exercise three times a week for a six week period. The results were as follows: The comparison of changes in PPT within each group before and after the treatment showed a statistically significant difference(p<.05) according to the treatment period and a statistically significant difference according to the treatment period and method(p<.05). While the comparison of the tests of between subjects effects between the groups did not show a statistically significant difference, the CAS group exhibited better effects. The above results suggest that the combined application of CAS and EHS generates better effects on changes in PPT than the single application of EHS. Given that stretching and muscle strengthening exercises even for the short research period of six weeks could change the PPT, continuous exercises and a correct postural habit for a longer period of time are likely to help prevent chronic pain and correct FHP.

 • Purpose: This review examined literature relevant to adolescent's health behavior in order to identify key behaviors and factors related to health behaviors for targeting health promotion interventions. Method: A critical review of 29 research articles was carried out using the guidelines suggested by Cooper. Result: The majority of the studies were descriptive and cross-sectional. Generally. the study includes sub-dimensions such as general hygiene and daily life habit, safety and accident prevention, nutrition and eating (tobacco, drinking), exercise, mental health and stress management, health duty (drug, health examination, disease prevention). Factors highly related to health behaviors were age, living areas, economic status, parent health behaviors, parent health concern, social support, friends influence, self-efficacy, self-esteem, locus of control, and the perceived health status. Sex, parent education and health knowledge were not related to health behaviors of adolescents. Conclusion: Several conceptual and methodological problems were identified in the studies review, such as restricted conceptualization of health behaviors and sampling issues which limit the generalizability of the study outcomes. Further research is needed to enhance the concept clarification and generalizablity of the study results.
