Iodine-sulfur(IS) hydrogenation production process consists of three sections, which are so called a Bunsen reaction section, a HI decomposition section and a $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section as a closed cycle. For highly efficient operation of a Bunsen reaction section, we investigated the phase separation characteristics of $H_2SO_4-HI-H_2O-I_2$ system into two liquid phases($H_2SO_4$-rich phase and $HI_x$-rich phase) in the high temperature ranges, mainly from 353 to 393 K, and in the $H_2SO_4/HI/H_2O/I_2$ molar ratio of $1/2/14{\sim}30/0.3{\sim}13.50$. The desired results for the minimization of impurities in each phase were obtained in conditions with the higher temperature and the higher $I_2$ molar composition. On the basis of the distribution of $H_2O$ to each phase, it is appeared that the affinity between $HI_x$ and $H_2O$ was more superior to that between $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O$.

The Sulfur-Iodine(SI) thermochemical hydrogen production process consists of three sections, which are so called the Bunsen reaction section, the $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section and the HI decomposition section. In order to identify the phase separation characteristics in the reaction conditions with the high solubility of $SO_2$, we conducted the Bunsen reaction at the low temperatures, ranging from 283 to 298K, with the $I_2/H_2O$ molar ratios of 2.5/16.0 and 3.5/16.0. The molar ratios of HI/$H_2SO_4$ products obtained from low temperature Bunsen reactions were ca. 2, indicating that there were no side reactions. The amount of reacted $SO_2$ was increased with decreasing the temperature, while the amounts of unreacted $I_2$ and $H_2O$ were decreased. In the phase separation of the products, the amount of a $H_2SO_4$ impurity in $HI_x$ phase was increased with decreasing the temperature, though the temperature has little affected on HI and $I_2$ impurities in $H_2SO_4$ phase.
A series of hydroxyl-group containing polyimides (HPIs) were prepared in order to investigate the structure-gas permeation property relationship. Each polymer membrane had structural characteristics that varied according to the dianhydride monomers. The imidization processes were monitored using spectroscopic and thermog-ravimetric analyses. The single gas permeability of He, $H_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$ and $CH_4$ were measured and compared in order to determine the effect of the polymer structure and functional -OH groups on the gas transport properties. Surprisingly, the ideal selectivity of $CO_2/CH_4$ and $H_2/CH_4$ increased with increasing level of -OH incorporation, which affected the diffusion of $H_2$ or the solubility of $CO_2$ in HPIs. For $H_2/CH_4$ separation, the difference in the diffusion coefficients of $H_2$ and $CH_4$ was the main factor for improving the performance without showing any changes in the solubility coefficients. However, the solubility coefficient of $CO_2$ in the HPIs increased at least four fold compared with the conventional polyimide membranes depending on the polymer structures. Based on these results, the polymer membranes modified with -OH groups in the polymer backbone showed favorable gas permeation and separation performance.

A novel stereo 3D LCD for passive interference filter glasses is presented. A demonstrator based on a standard 120Hz LCD was set up. Stereoscopic image separation was realized in a time-sequential mode using a LED-based scanning backlight with two complementary spectra. A stereo brightness of 3 cd/$m^2$ and a channel separation of 30:1 were achieved.
With rapid increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) due to the rising economy, solid waste gasification emerges as one of the promising technologies. Separation of the carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen ($H_2$) from syngas obtained by gasification of MSW was studied using the polyamide composite membrane. The separation characteristics of the CO and $H_2$ were studied at different gas flow rates and stage cuts. The permeability of CO and $H_2$ along with the selectivity of $H_2$ with respect to CO was obtained. Furthermore, the Arrhenius plots were obtained to estimate the activation energies of CO and $H_2$ permeabilites.

As for analytes which did not represent the differences of the selectivity on the stationary and mobile phase, secondary chemical equilibrium theory was applied to study pH effects on the separation of alkylphenols. Mobile phase was consisted of an aqueous sodium carbonate-bicarbonate buffer and acetonitrile. The maximum selectivity for adjacent peak pairs was predicted from those values of $k^{\prime}_{HA}/k^{\prime}_{A-}$ and ${\Delta}pK$. The optimum pH determined by this method was 11.18 pH and solvent selectivity were considered at the same time to invoke the full range of selectivity effects possible for separations. Quaternary mixture composed of methanol, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran and water was adjusted to optimum pH 11.18. As the statistical simplex technique of an overlapping resolution map (ORM) was used to predict the optimized solvent system. The optimum solvent, which gives complete separation of alkylphenols, was determined as follws MeOH : ACN : THF = 14.4 : 81.8 : 2.8.
Solid-liquid separation of swine wastewater was conducted using bentonite as coagulant. During the separation experiment, coagulation efficiency was also investigated. To determine optimal bentonite dose, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6% (w/v basis) of bentonite was dosed. Suspended solid removal efficiency was 87-98% at whole bentonite dosage. But sediment volume was increased, and settling velocity was decreased at excessive bentonite dosage. Therefore optimal bentonite dosage was evaluated around 0.2-0.4%. In the test to determine optimal pH, coagulation using bentonite was performed at pH 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. At lower pH suspended solid removal efficiency was increased. However, sediment volume was also increased and phosphorus release was observed. Thereby optimal pH for bentonite coagulation might be appeared in the range of 6-7.
Styrene-acrylamide co-polymer was immobilized on porous partially sub-$2{\mu}m$ silica monolith particles and inner surface of fused silica capillary ($50{\mu}m$ ID and 28 cm length) to result in ${\mu}LC$ and CEC stationary phases, respectively, for separation of anomeric D-glucose derivatives. Reversed addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization was incorporated to induce surface polymerization. Acrylamide was employed to incorporate amide-functionality in the stationary phase. The resultant ${\mu}LC$ and CEC stationary phases were able to separate isomers of D-glucose derivatives with high selectivity and efficiency. The mobile phase of 75/25 (v/v) acetonitrile (ACN)/water with 0.1% TFA, was used for HPLC with a packed column (1 mm ID, 300 mm length). The effects of pH and ACN composition on anomeric separation of D-glucose in CEC have been examined. A mobile phase of 85/15 (v/v) ACN/30 mM sodium acetate pH 6.7 was found the optimized mobile phase for CEC. The CEC stationary phase also gave good separation of other saccharides such as maltotriose and Dextran 1500 (MW~1500) with good separation efficiency (number of theoretical plates ~300,000/m).
In this study, cement/PVDF hollow-fiber hybrid membranes were prepared via a mixed process of diffusion-induced phase separation and hydration. The presence of X-ray diffraction peaks of Ca(OH)2, an AFt phase, an AFm phase, and C-S-H phase confirmed the hydration reaction. Good hydrophilicity was obtained. The cross-sectional and surface morphologies of the hybrid membranes showed that an asymmetric pore structure was formed. Hydration products comprising parallel plates of Ca(OH)2, fibrous ettringite AFt, and granulated particles AFm were obtained gradually. For the hybrid membranes cured for different time, the pore-size distribution was similar but the porosity decreased because of blocking of the hydration products. In addition, the water flux decreased with hydration time, and carbon retention was 90% after 5 h of rejection treatment. Almost all the Zn2+ ions were adsorbed by the hybrid membrane. The above results proved that the obtained membrane could be alternative as basement membrane for separation application.
For the selective separation of proteins, the solubilization and desolubilization of proteins in sodium-di-2-ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate (AOT)-isooctane reverse micellar system were investigated. Protein solubilization increased with increasing the concentration of AOT to 200 mM and then decreased above that concentration. Protein was solubilized into reverse micelles in the pH range below the isoelectric Point of each protein, pH 4-10 for lysozyme and pH 5-6 for trypsin and ${\alpha}-chymotrypsin$, Lysozyme, trypsin and ${\alpha}-chymotrypsin$ were efficiently extracted in the precence of KCl and NaCl while larger molecular weight proteins such as pepsin and BSA had high solubilization with $CaCl_2$. At higher ionic strength all proteins exhibited murk less tendency to solubilize and the increase of ionic strength resulted in the decrease of micelle size. Lysozyme was successfully back transfered at pH 12.2 and 1.0M KCl; trypsin at pH 12.6 and 0.5M KCl; and ${\alpha}-chymotrypsin$ at pH 6.7 and 0.5M KCl. In a test group separation experiments, complete separation of lysozyme from BSA could be obtained.
