  • In this study, Bacillus licheniformis which has been used as probiotics was isolated from Korean traditional fermented soybean. A total of 69 strains were presumptively identified as B. licheniformis by phenotypic methods. Based on PCR amplification and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the multilocus sequence typing of gyrA and rpoB, followed by phylogenetic analysis was performed. The isolates were distinctly differentiated and found to be closely related to B. amyloliquefaciens, B. subtilis, and B. aerius. The partial 16S rRNA gene sequences of those strains matched those of B. sonorensis (97%) and B. aerius (98%) in the phylogenetic tree. In contrast, multilocus phylogenetic analysis (MLPA) showed that only 61 (86.9%) out of 69 strains were B. licheniformis. The rest of those strains were found to be B. subtilis (5.8%), B. amyloliquefaciens (2.9%), and B. sonorensis (2.9%), respectively. Therefore, our results suggested that since the 16S rRNA gene sequencing alone was not sufficient to compare and discriminate closely related lineages of Bacillus spp., it was required to analyze the MLPA simultaneously to avoid any misleading phenotype-based grouping of these closely related species.

  • Shock waves have been observed in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. They are commonly interpreted as being driven by mergers of sub-clumps, so are called "merger shocks". We here report a study of the properties of merger shocks in merging galaxy clusters with cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. As a representative case, we describe the case where sub-clusters with mass ratio ~ 2 go through an almost head-on, binary-like merger. Because of the turbulent nature of hierarchical clustering, shock surfaces are not uniform, but composed of parts with different Mach numbers. As merger shocks expand from the core to the outskirts, the average Mach number, < $M_s$ >, increases. The shocks propagating along the merger axis could be observed as X-ray shocks and/or radio relics. The kinetic energy through the shocks peaks at ~ 1 Gyr after shock launching, or at ~ 1 - 2 Mpc from the core. The most energetic shocks are found to have the kinetic-energy weighted Mach number, < $M_s$ > $_{\phi}{\simeq}2-3$, and the CR-energy weighted Mach number, < $M_s$ > $_{CR}{\simeq}3-4$. We then discuss the observational implications of our results.

  • We present a discovery of two new globular clusters in the Hubble Space Telescope archive images of the M81 group. They are located much farther from both M81 and M82 in the sky, compared with previously known star clusters in these galaxies. Both clusters show that higher luminosity and larger effective radius than typical globular clusters in Milky Way and M81. Using the available spectroscopic data provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we derive a low metallicity with [Fe/H] ${\approx}$ -2.3 and an old age ~14 Gyr for GC-2. The I-band magnitude of the tip of the RGB for GC-1 is consistent with that of the halo stars in the GC-1 and GC-2 field. However, that of GC-2 is 0.26 mag fainter than its field. It shows that GC-2 is about 400 kpc behind the M81 halo along our line of sight. The deprojected distance to GC-2 from M81 is much larger than any other known globular clusters in the local universe. We discuss the possible scenarios to explain the existence of globular cluster in such an extremely isolated environment.

  • M82 is a famous starburst galaxy which is dominated by young stellar populations and ISM. Some previous studies indicated the existence of intermediate-age and old stellar population in this galaxy, but little is known about them. We present a study of old globular clusters in M82 using the Hubble Space Telescope archive data. From the cluster survey of M82 we found 650 star clusters. We divided them into disk and halo star clusters according to their position. The color-color diagrams show that all 19 halo star clusters are old globular clusters. The disk sample may include both reddened young clusters and geniune old globular clusters. We estimated their ages using spectral energy distribution fit method with six filter data covering from ultraviolet (F330W) to infrared (F160W), and found that 30 of them are older than 3 Gyr. These are considered to be disk globular clusters. Twelve of the halo globular clusters are found to be partially resolved into their member stars. The (B-V) color range of the halo globular clusters is consistent with that of the Milky Way globular clusters, but most of M82 globular clusters are bluer than (B-V)=0.7. The existence of these old globular clusters suggests that the starburst galaxy M82 has an old stellar halo that may be as old as the Milky Way halo.

  • The light curve and radial velocity curve of multiperiodic dwarf cepheid VI719 Cyg (HD200925) with peculiar light curve have been reanalyzed in order to identify the oscillation modes to confirm the helium settling within the envelope. To do these, through the period search for the photometric and radial velocity data from the literature, two different periods were determined and the oscillation modes corresponding to the first and second periods were identified as the fundamental and first radial overtones. Hence the helium settling within the envelope was confirmed from the period ratio. The color excess, metallicity, effective temperature, and surface gravity corresponding to two different modes were determined and it was found that these parameters almost do not depend upon different oscillation mode. By utilizing the surface brightness method, we investigated the variation of angular diameter and radial displacement and it was found that the angular variation is very peculiar. Also by referring to the stellar models, mass and age were determined as $2.7M_{\bigodot}$ and 0.42 Gyr respectively which make this variable star heavier and younger than other multimode dwarf cepheids. Preliminary spectroscopic CCD observations were carried out and it was found that Mg in VI719 Cygni is nearly solar abundent according to the analysis of $5172.68{\AA}MgI$ line which is inconsistent with the photometric result. It was suggested that VI719 Cyg may be classified as a $\rho$ Pup stars according to the photometric characteristics.

  • on the observation with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini-South 8.1 m telescope. The radial velocities of four ESCs do not display any sign of systematic motion, unlike the intermediate age carbon stars in NGC 6822. The ages and metallicities derived using the Lick indices show that the ESCs are old (>=8 Gyr) and metal poor ([Fe/H] <= -1.5). NGC 6822 is found to have both metal poor ($[Fe/H]{\approx}-2.0$) and metal rich ($[Fe/H]{\approx}-0.9$) star clusters within 15' (2 kpc) from the center, whereas only metal poor clusters are observed in the outer halo with r >= 20'(2.6 kpc). Based on the kinematics, old ages, and low metallicities of ESCs, we discuss the possible origin of ESCs and the formation of the outer halo of a small dwarf irregular galaxy NGC6822.

  • Ultra faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are larger but fainter than globular clusters, being the faintest galaxies in the universe. They have been found only in the Local Group. We report the discovery of an UFD in the intracluster field of the Virgo cluster (Virgo UFD1). It is located near the core of Virgo cluster, and far from any massive galaxies. The color magnitude diagram of resolved stars in Virgo UFD1 shows narrow, metal poor red giant branch (RGB), which is very similar to the UFDs in the Local Group. by comparing RGB in this galaxy with 12 Gyr stellar isochrones, we estimate its distance, $d=16.4{\pm}0.4$ Mpc and mean metallicity, $[Fe/H]=-2.4{\pm}0.4$. We derive its integrated photometric properties and structural parameters : V-band absolute magnitude of $MV=-6.3{\pm}0.2$, effective radius of $84{\pm}7pc$, and central surface brightness of ${\mu}V,0=26.49{\pm}0.09$ mag arcsec-2. These properties are similar to these of Local Group UFDs. Virgo UFD1 is the first UFD discovered beyond the Local Group. These results indicate that it may be a fossil remnant of the first galaxies.

  • In the hierarchical universe, galaxy merger is predicted to be frequent, and thus it is an important element for understanding galaxy evolution. In particular, star formation is greatly enhanced during the merger. The aim of this study is to understand the position and rate change of star formation caused by equal-mass edge-on mergers. We use the GADGET2- N-body/SPH code, and fully consider gas cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. We show the star formation rate (SFR), and the magnitude and color evolution of the merger remnants for 18 different configurations varying orbit elements and inclinations of host galaxies against orbit planes. Then we construct the mock images of the remnants and investigate on how equal-mass galaxy merger affects the SFR and color/magnitude evolution while considering dust reddening. We conclude that over 90% mass of SF in equal-mass merger is in the central region. SF in tidal feature involves a small fraction of new stars and thus is difficult to detect unless deep imaging is performed. Around 55 ${\pm}$ 5 percent of gas turns into stars until the final coalescence which typically corresponds to 0.8, 1.2, and 2.5 Gyr for direct, parabolic, and elliptical orbit, respectively. This result is roughly consistent with Cox et al. 2000. We plan to implement this result into semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Caveats and future work on merging conditions are discussed.

  • Bacillus cereus group comprising B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, and B. mycoides was differentiated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and colony morphology. Prevalence of B. cereus group in rice and distribution of enterotoxin genes were determined as possible food poisoning agents. PCR using primers targeted for gyrB and cry genes could distinguish B. thuringiensis from B. cereus, and B. mycoides was differentiated by rhizoid morphological characteristics on nutrient agar. Among 136 rice and their processed products, prevalence of B. cereus group was 40%. B. cereus group consisted of 54 B. cereus, 11 B. thuringiensis, and 1 B. mycoides. Major isolates were B. cereus, with B. thuringiensis detected up to 10% among edible rice tested. Five enterotoxin genes, hbl, nhe, bceT, entFM, and cytK, were broadly distributed among B. cereus group, especially in B. cereus and B. thuringiensis. Prevalence of B. cereus group in rice and enterotoxin distribution suggest B. thuringiensis and B. cereus are toxigenic strain that should be controlled in rice and its products.

  • We performed MLSA (multilocus sequence analysis) and phenotypic characterization of Aliivibrio species isolated from walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) maintained in 3 different facilities of Gangwon Province, the east coast of Korea. Of 38 Aliivibrio species identified by 16S rDNA sequences, 12 strains were randomly selected and MLSA was conducted with 5 house-keeping genes (gapA, gyrB, pyrH, recA and rpoA) and 16S rDNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis and homology of the concatenated sequences (4,580 bp) with other Vibrionaceae genera revealed that 4 strains (GNGc16.1, YYGc16.1, YYGc16.2, GSGc18.1) were identified as Aliivibrio logei and one strain (GSGc16.1) as A. wodanis. One strain (GSGc17.1) was tentatively identified as A. logei, but needs further analysis because it did not belong to the same clade with A. logei type strain. 6 strains (GSGc17.2, GNGc16.2, GSGc16.2, GSGc17.3, GSGc18.2, GSGc17.4) need further investigation as potential novel species. Either phenotypic characterization or 16S rDNA sequence alone did not provide enough information for identification of Aliivibrio strains at the species level. A. logei and A. wodanis are generally known as non-pathogenic bacteria, but also known as opportunistic or secondary pathogens of cold water fishes. Cares should be taken to prevent potential outbreaks due to these bacteria, although there was no outbreaks during the sampling period.
