  • The acoustic signatures from a propeller fan under non-uniform inlet flow conditions were measured to reveal the mechanism for tonal radiation. Experimental studies were carried out by generating non-uniform turbulent flows with circumferential and radial components of harmonic incoming gust deliberately. This paper reports the measured acoustic power exponents and cross-spectra for circumferential and radial disturbances at a specified flow-rate coefficient.

  • A novel attitude tacking control method using Time Delay Control (TDC) scheme is developed to provide robust controllability of a rigid hexacopter in case of single or multiple rotor faults. When the TDC scheme is developed, the rotor faults such as the abrupt and/or incipient rotor faults are considered as model uncertainties. The kinematics, modeling of rigid dynamics of hexacopter, and design of stability and controllability augmentation system (SCAS) are addressed rigorously in this paper. In order to compare the developed control scheme to a conventional control method, a nonlinear numerical simulation has been performed and the attitude tracking performance has been compared between the two methods considering the single and multiple rotor faults cases. The developed control scheme shows superior stability and robust controllability of a hexacopter that is subjected to one or multiple rotor faults and external disturbance, i.e., wind shear, gust, and turbulence.

  • There are concerns about the influence of the gust wind caused by helicopters affecting the moving vehicles while hovering over the road during rescue activities. For the understanding of such complicated flow. numerical simulation of a rotor hovering above the ground has been carried out, changing the rotor/ground clearances. The rotor thrust is kept constant. and the rotor control is determined by trim adjustments incorporated into the CFD algorithm. Collective pitch angle and the required power decreases with the rotor/ground clearance which agrees with experience. Changes of the flowfield near the rotor with regard to the rotor height are investigated based on the calculated results.

  • A comparative study of wind speed spectrum based on the in-situ observation at the SeoHae bridge site is conducted. Wind speed and directions of the SeoHae bridge site is measured and analyzed. Mean wind speed and turbulence intensity are estimated. The power spectral density function of the fluctuating component of the wind velocity is estimated. Several wind spectrum models of gust wind turbulence are compared and discussed based on the estimated wind spectrum.

  • The free-wing tilt-body aircraft is researched in the flight performance characteristics such as short take-off and landing capability, and reduced sensitivity to gust and center of gravity (CG) change. Due to the main wing separating from the fuselage, the high tiltable empennage, and the stub-wing strongly influencing from the propeller wake, the resulting vehicle aerodynamics and flight dynamics are quite different from those of a conventional fixed-wing aircraft. Using the governing flight dynamics model was studied previously, all of speed and body tilt angle is simulated to determine the flight envelope by a non-linear 3-DOF flight simulation analysis. Though flight performance and trimmability are studied, the flight model of free-wing tilt-body aircraft is to reduce the hidden risk and to achieve the successful flight test. It is analyzed the flight characteristics that distinguishes free-wing tilt-body aircraft from the conventional aircraft.

  • This paper discusses engineering aspects of the rear-flank downdraft that was recorded near Lubbock, Texas on 4 June 2002, and produced a gust wind speed nearly equal to the design value (50-year return period) for the region. The general characteristics of the storm, and the decomposition of the time histories into deterministic 'running mean' and random turbulence components are discussed. The fluctuating wind speeds generated by the event can be represented as a dominant low-frequency 'running mean' with superimposed random turbulence of higher frequencies. Spectral and correlation characteristics of the residual turbulence are found to be similar to those of high-frequency turbulence in boundary-layer winds. However, the low-frequency components in the running-mean wind speeds are spatially homogeneous, in contrast to the low-frequency turbulence found in synoptic boundary-layer winds. With respect to transmission line design, this results in significantly higher 'span reduction factors'.

  • Predictions of the pedestrian level wind speeds for the downtown area of Auckland that have been obtained by wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling are presented. The wind tunnel method involves the observation of erosion patterns as the wind speed is progressively increased. The computational solutions are mean flow calculations, which were obtained by using the finite volume code PHOENICS and the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The results for a variety of wind directions are compared, and it is observed that while the patterns are similar there are noticeable differences. A possible explanation for these differences arises because the tunnel prediction technique is sensitivity to gust wind speeds while the CFD method predicts mean wind speeds. It is shown that in many cases the computational model indicates high mean wind speeds near the corner of a building while the erosion patterns are consistent with eddies being shed from the edge of the building and swept downstream.

  • This paper presents an analysis of wind velocity measurements obtained from four ultrasonic anemometers arranged in a vertical formation. The anemometers were located in a rural environment with a view to providing detailed information on the flow statistics of the lower part of the atmospheric boundary layer, particularly for the extreme wind events that are important in loading calculations. The data is analysed using both conventional analysis and conditional sampling. The latter is combined with wavelet analysis in order to provide a detailed analysis of the energy/frequency relationship of the extreme events. The work presented in this paper suggests that on average the extreme events occur as a result of the superposition of two independent mechanisms - large scale events that scale on the atmospheric boundary layer thickness and small scale events a few tens of metres in size.

  • This article describes the fuzzy control of the 3-dimensional motion of the container cranes used in dockside container terminals. The container is suspended by four flexible cables via spreader, and due to the disturbances such as the wind and acceleration of cranes, the container undergoes translational(sway) and rotational position errors. And due to the uncertainty of weight and rotational inertia, accurate position control of container crane is difficult to realize. This paper, based on the analysis of 3-dimensional dynamics of container moving systems, describes the design of the fuzzy controller, which does not require the computation time to optimize the distribution of cable tension. The developed controller is shown effective in controlling the container position in the presence of gust and parameter uncertainties.
