  • A series of pot experiments were conducted to quantitatively estimate inhibitory effects of reclaimed soil on the growth of Lentil (Lens culinaris) with two soils remediated by land farming (DDC) and low temperature thermal desorption(YJ), respectively. After cultivation in a growth chamber for 8 days, plants were harvested for the analysis of 8 indices including chlorophyll-a and carotenoid in leaves, shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, root length, number of later roots, specific root length (SRL) as well as germination rate in comparison to control experiment conducted on nursery soil. Root length was estimated by SmartRoot program from the digital images of the roots. The results showed germination rate on YJ and DDC soil decreased 29 and 71%, respectively. In comparison to the control, the averaged value of the 8 indices for YJ and DDC soil showed overall growth inhibition was 48 and 68%, respectively. When the same experiment was conducted with 25% (W/W) vermiculate amended soil, plant growth on each soil was comparable to that of the control. The results implies reclaimed soils requires additional processes and/or amendments to reuse for plant growth.

  • In this study, we evaluated the nitrogen (N) mineralization potential and Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of oil-cake, compost, hairy vetch and barley, which are the most widely used organic amendments in South Korea. The N mineralization potential (No) for organic fertilizers treated soil was highest for the hairy vetch treatment with a value of $18.9mg\;N\;100\;g^{-1}$, followed by oil-cake, barley and compost. The amount of pure N mineralization potentials in hairy vetch, oil-cake, barley and compost treatments were 8.42, 7.62, 3.82 and $3.60mg\;N\;100\;g^{-1}$, respectively. The half-life ($t_{1/2}$) of organic N in soil amended with oil-cake fertilizer mineralized quickly in 17 days. While, $t_{1/2}$ values of organic N for the compost and barley treatments accounted to 44.4 and 44.1 days, respectively. Oil-cake was good in supplying nutrients to plants. Compost and barley inhibited plant growth in the beginning growth stage and this is attributed to N immobilization effect. The results of this study highlight that compost and barley could be used as potential slow release fertilizers in conventional agriculture.

  • Due to rapid increase in the demand of Natural Rubber (NR) few years ago, NR price sore very higher. The rubber plantation in Thailand expanded very fast to non traditional areas with the result Thai become the biggest NR exporting country in the world. However, the average yield is still lower compared to experimental yield of RRIT (Rubber Research Institute of Thailand) or just 60 % (RRIT, 1998). This is due to many of new rubber planting areas, which are not suitable. The Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives thus has set 'The complete cycle development strategies for natural rubber' in the medium-term measures by reducing the rubber planting areas by 300,000 rai (1 rai = 0.16ha) through replanting with oil palm. The aim of this study is to find out land having lowest potential for rubber production (R3) but highest for oil palm production (P1). Find areas which are unsuitable for rubber and can be replaced by oil palm in order to get a better agricultural production. The study was applied upon Krabi province, Thailand. Crops requirement, degree of limitation to crops growth, climatic data, crops yield, soil map, topographic map etc., were used to evaluate land potential for both rubber and oil palm production according to FAO framework (Sys, 1992). An Agro-ecological suitability map for rubber and oil palm were produced. This was done by mean of GIS. The database was generated and guide map for the decision makers in view of suitable crop substitution was prepared.

  • The study examined the difference of the physique, the physical strength, and the physical constitution between meal and non-meal service schools at the countryside, and concluded as follows: 1) The effects on the physical development Meal service school student's height was 0.41~2.38cm taller, weight 0.21~1.58kg heavier, and the chests 0.15~2.55cm bigger than the non-meal service school students. Therefore, the effects of the school meal service on the student's physique development proved positive. 2) The effects on the physical strength Today, the student's physical growth is reinforced by consuming high calorie food, while their physical exercise is decreased. As a result, obesity becomes another problem. In this respect, physical strength is a significant factor in judging the physical condition of the students. This study compared the meal service schools with the non-meal service schools by suing six items of the physical strength test those schools. In comparison, the meal service school students were better than the others in most items except in the eleven year old girl's 100 meter running and the ball throwing, and the ten year old boy's 600meter running. It means that school meal service affects the physical growth in a positive manner. 3) The effects on the physical constitution The students in their growing period should have their meals not only balanced, but regularly since this helps to maintain their health. Insufficient nutrition may disturb the balanced physical growth of cause a weak or powerless physical constitution. As shown at the table 6, meal service school students who had a balanced meal have 0.01% lower incidence of disease. and 3.11~7.32% less myophia than the other. The average 0.39 to 0.63 cavity of the meal service school students also show that their constitutions are better than the non-meal service ones. In conclusion, the school meal service program gives every student a regular nutritious meal which results in a balanced physical growth. Erentually, the healthier students could be the healthier social menbers which promise a brighter society in the future.

  • The humanized anti-hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) monoclonal antibody (mAb) YYB-101 is a promising therapeutic candidate for treating various cancers. In this study, we developed a bioprocess for large-scale production of YYB-101 and evaluated its therapeutic potential for tumor treatment using a xenograft mouse model. By screening diverse chemically defined basal media formulations and by assessing the effects of various feed supplements and feeding schedules on cell growth and antibody production, we established an optimal medium and feeding method to produce 757 mg/l of YYB-101 in flask cultures, representing a 7.5-fold increase in titer compared with that obtained under non-optimized conditions. The optimal dissolved oxygen concentration for antibody production was 70% $pO_2$. A pH shift from 7.2 to 7.0, rather than controlled pH of either 7.0 or 7.2, resulted in productivity improvement in 5 L and 200 L bioreactors, yielding 737 and 830 mg/ml of YYB-101, respectively. The YYB-101 mAb highly purified by affinity chromatography using a Protein A column and two-step ion exchange chromatography effectively neutralized HGF in a cell-based assay and showed potent tumor suppression activity in a mouse xenograft model established with human glioblastoma cells.
