Effects of Sub Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of Metronidazole and Penicillin on Morphology of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans: Scanning Electron Microscopy Observation

  • Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) is the lowest concentration of antibiotics that inhibits the visible growth of bacteria. It has been reported that sub-MIC of antibiotics may result in morphological alterations, along with the biochemical and physiological changes in bacteria. The purpose of this study was to examine morphological changes of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, after the treatment with sub-MIC metronidazole and penicillin. The bacterial morphology was observed with scanning electron microscope, after incubating with sub-MIC antibiotics. The length of A. actinomycetemcomitans was increased after the incubation with sub-MIC metronidazole and penicillin. Sub-MIC metronidazole and penicillin inhibited bacterial division and induced long filaments. Our study showed that metronidazole and penicillin can induce the morphological changes in A. actinomycetemcomitans.

  • We have investigated thin film morphology of pentacene thin films by the process of low-pressure gas assisted organic vapor deposition (LP-GAOVD). Source temperature, inert gas flow rate, substrate temperature and deposition pressure during film deposition is used to vary the growth rate, thin film morphology and the crystalline grain size of pentacene thin films. The electrical properties of pentacene thin films for applications in organic thin film transistor and electrophoretic displays will be discussed.

Development and Morphology of pelvetia siliquosa Tseng et Chang (Phaeophyta) In Culture

  • The present study reports morphology and developmental pattern off siliquosa cultured in a laboratory condition. The zygote was spherical with a diameter of 85 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. During development the polarized zygote divided horizontally and the lower daughter cell divided horizontally into 2 cells. The upper cell was divided repeatedly in horizontal and vertical directions to form a cylinder-like structure, which subsequently developed into secondary and tertiary dichotomous branches. Optimum temperature for zygote release and fertilization was 25C. Injury inflicted by slicing was cured by epidermal differentiation, and adventitious branches; the branches emerging from the pith cells, however, developed no rhizoid. Adventitious branch formation rate was over 88% in all plates supplemented with 0.5 mg/L IAA and peaked at 98% under 0.5 mg/L IAA plus 0.5-5.0 mg/L NAA treatment. NAA stimulated the differentiation of adventitious branches at a wide range of concentrations, while IAA, 2,4-D and kinetin exhibited dose-dependent stimulation.

  • Nanostructured thermoelectric bismuth telluride ($Bi_2Te_3$) powders with various morphologies, such as nanoplates, nanorods, and nanotubes, were prepared by a hydrothermal method based on the reaction between $BiCl_3$, Te, and sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate ($Na_2$-EDTA) at 150, 180, and $210^{\circ}C$. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The effect of reaction temperature on the morphology of the $Bi_2Te_3$ particles was investigated, and the possible mechanism of morphology control was proposed.

  • The deposition rate, the current efficiency and surface morphology of trivalent Cr deposits were investigated according to additives in sulfate bath and current density. The deposition rate of the Cr deposits plated from the formic acid complexed bath was noticeably higher than that of the glycine complexed bath. The current efficiency of the deposition from formic acid bath was higher than that of the glycine bath and increased with current density in the range of 20-50 A/d$\m^2$. The current efficiency of the deposition from the formic acid bath with boric acid buffer was higher than that of the bath with aluminum sulfate or boric acid-aluminum sulfate buffers. The nodular crystallite size of the Cr deposits increased with current density and the uniform and crack-free growth of the deposits for the aluminum sulfate was observed compared to the other buffers.

Electrochemical Studies on the Mechanism of the Fabrication of Ceramic Films by Hydrothermal-Electrochemical Technique

  • In this paper, electrochemical techniques are used to investigate hydrothermal-electrochemically formation of barium titanate (BT) ceramic films. For comparison, the electrochemical behaviors of anodic titanium oxide films formed in alkaline solution were also investigated both at room temperature and in hydrothermal condition at 150.0 ℃. Film structure and morphology were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Titanium oxide films produced at different potentials exhibit different film morphology. The breakdown of titanium oxide films anodic growth on Ti electrode plays an important roles in the formation of BT films. BT films can grow on anodic oxide/metal substrate interface by short-circuit path, and the dissolution-precipitation processes on the ceramic film/solution interface control the film structure and morphology. Based upon the current experimental results and our previous work, extensively schematic proce-dures are proposed to model the mechanism of ceramic film formation by hydrothermal-electrochemical method.

고내식성의 신 마그네슘 코팅막 제작 (Preparation of New Corrosive Resistive Magnesium Coating Films)

  • The properties of the deposited film depend on the deposition condition and these, in turn depend critically on the morphology and crystal orientation of the films. Therefore, it is important to clarify the nucleation occurrence and growth stage of the morphology and orientation of the film affected by deposition parameters, e.g. the gas pressure and bias voltage etc. In this work, magnesium thin flims were prepared on cold-rolled steel substrates by a thermo-eletron activation ion plating technique. The influence of nitrogen gas pressure and substrate bias voltage on their crystal orientation and morphology of the coated films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The diffraction peaks of magnesium film became less sharp and broadened with the increase of nitrogen gas pressure. With an increase in nitrogen gas pressure, flim morphology changed from colum nar to granular structure, and surface crystal grain-size decreased. The morphology of films depended not only on gas pressure but also on bias voltage, i.e., the effect of increasing bias voltage was similar to that of decreasing gas pressure. The effect of crystal orientation and morphology of magnesium films on corrosion behaviors was estimated by measuring anodic polarization curves in deaerated 3%NaCl solution. Magnesium, in general, has not a good corrosion resistance in all environments. However, these magnesium films prepared by changing nitrogen gas pressure showed good corrosion resistance. Among the films, magnesium films which exhibited granular structure had the highest corrosion resistance. The above phenomena can be explained by applying the effects of adsorption, occlusion and ion sputter of nitrogen gas.

Effect of Supplementation of Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2 Grown on Citrus-juice Waste and Corn-soybean Meal Substrate on Growth Performance, Nutrient Retention, Caecal Microbiology and Small Intestinal Morphology of Broilers

  • A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2 grown on citrus-juice waste and corn-soybean substrate on growth performance, nutrient retention, caecal microbial population and intestinal morphology in broilers. Three hundred twenty d-old Ross chicks were randomly allotted to 4 treatments on the basis of BW in a randomized complete block design. Each treatment had 4 replicates of 20 chicks in each. Experimental diets were fed in 2 phases, starter (d 0 to 21) and finisher (d 21 to 35). Dietary treatments were; negative control (NC: basal diet without any antimicrobial), positive control (PC: basal diet added with 20 mg/kg Avilamycin), basal diet added with 0.30% Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2 grown on corn-soybean substrate (P1), and basal diet added with 0.30% Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2 grown on citrus-juice waste substrate (P2). Overall BW gain, feed intake and FCR were better (p<0.05) in PC, P1 and P2 treatments as compared to NC. Moreover, overall BW gain and FCR in PC and P2 treatments were greater than P1. Retention of CP, GE (d 21, d 35) and DM (d 35) were increased (p<0.05) in treatments PC, P1 and P2 compared with NC. At d 35, caecal Clostridium and Coliform counts were lower (p<0.05) in treatments PC, P1 and P2 than NC. Moreover, Clostridium and Coliform counts in treatment PC was lower (p<0.05) than P1. Villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio in both duodenum and ileum were increased (p<0.05) in treatments PC, P1, P2 as compared to NC. However, retention of nutrients, caecal microbial population and intestinal morphology remained comparable among treatments P1 and P2. It is concluded that Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2 inclusion at 0.30% level had beneficial effects on broilers' growth performance, nutrient retention, caecal microflora and intestinal morphology. Additionally, citrus-juice waste can be used as substrate for growth of probiotic Bacillus subtilis LS 1-2.

천마버섯(Armillaria gallica) 자실체 조직배양체의 특성 (Characterization of cultures isolated from fruiting body tissue in Armillaria gallica)

  • 자연 상태에서 발생한 천마버섯 자실체의 다양한 부위로부터 분리한 조직을 버섯완전배지 및 감자배지에 배양하여 균사생장 속도, 균총 형태, 균사속 형성 정도에 따라 12종류로 구분할 수 있었다. 자실체배양체(fruiting culture isolate; FC)의 균사생장과 균사속은 감자배지보다 버섯완전배지에서 빠르고 잘 형성되었다. 이들을 다시 2차 계대 배양한 결과 버섯완전배지에서 11번 균주가 균총 분리 되면서 다시 분화되어 성장하였다. 균총 분리된 한 쪽의 균총이 12번과 유사하였고 이 12번 균주는 다른 종류와는 전혀 다른 특이한 양상을 나타내었다. 또한 RAPD에 의한 DNA 패턴 분석 결과 자실체 조직배양체는 천마균1호 품종과 동일한 양상을 나타냈으나 12번은 달랐다. 자실체 조직배양체 중에서 기존 천마균1호 품종보다 균사생장과 균사속 형성이 양호한 것을 선발할 수 있었다. 따라서 이들 조직배양체는 새로운 우량 계통으로 이용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Effects of dietary flavonoids on performance, blood constituents, carcass composition and small intestinal morphology of broilers: a meta-analysis

  • Objective: This study aims to evaluate the influence of dietary flavonoids on the growth performance, blood and intestinal profiles, and carcass characteristics of broilers by employing a meta-analysis method. Methods: A database was built from published studies which have reported on the addition of various levels of flavonoids from herbs into broiler diets and then monitored growth performance, blood constituents, carcass proportion and small intestinal morphology. A total of 42 articles were integrated into the database. Several forms of flavonoids in herbs were applied in the form of unextracted and crude extracts. The database compiled was statistically analyzed using mixed model methodology. Different studies were considered as random effects, and the doses of flavonoids were treated as fixed effects. The model statistics used were the p-values and the Akaike information criterion. The significance of an effect was stated when its p-value was <0.05. Results: Dietary flavonoids increased (quadratic pattern; p<0.05) the average daily gain of broilers in the finisher phase. There was a reduction (p<0.01) in the feed conversion ratio of the broilers both in the starter (linear pattern) and finisher phases (quadratic pattern). The mortality rate tended to decrease linearly (p<0.1) with the addition of flavonoids, while the carcass parameter was generally not influenced. A reduction (p<0.001) in cholesterol and malondialdehyde concentrations (both linearly) was observed, while super oxide dismutase activity increased linearly (p<0.001). Increasing the dose of flavonoids increased (p<0.01) the villus height (VH) and villus height and crypt depth (VH:CD) ratio (p<0.05) in the duodenum. Similarly, the VH:CD ratio was elevated (p<0.001) in the jejunum following flavonoid supplementation. Conclusion: Increasing levels of flavonoids in broilers diet leads to an improvement in growth performance, blood constituents, carcass composition and small intestinal morphology.
