  • The mechanical fastening has some advantages in respect of the fastening strength and disassemble of the fastened parts. However, at the same time it has some dangerous factors, can cause fatigue crack initiation and propagation due to not only the static loading such as cargo and passengers but also the dynamic loading like vibrations which occur in the engines and the propellers. For this reason, the strength evaluation for the mechanical fastenings along with the sophisticated and detailed mechanical design and the safety evaluation should be executed, In this paper, we were carried out experiments to study fatigue crack growth paths in structures containing the multiple circular holes. It was investigated that how circular holes are affected on fatigue crack growth paths using the specimen consists of A5052-H112, which is widely used as the ship materials. It was found from the experimental results that the fatigue crack as if it is drawn to circular holes when crack tip approach to circular holes. However, it did not go into circular hole if there is the next circular hole. Therefore, the clarification of mechanism on the fatigue crack initiation and the propagation in structures containing the multiple circular holes can be expected in this study.

  • A study on a creep-fatigue crack growth behavior has been carried out for a cylindrical structure with weldments by using a structural test and an evaluation according to the assessment procedures. The creep-fatigue crack growth behavior following the creep-fatigue crack initiation has been assessed by using the French A16 procedure and the conservatism for the present structural test has been examined. The structural specimen is a welded cylindrical shell made of 316 L stainless steel (SS) for one half of the cylinder and 304 SS for the other half. In the creep-fatigue test, the hold time under a tensile load which produces the primary nominal stress of 45 MPa was one hour at $600^{\circ}C$ and creep-fatigue loads of 600 cycles were applied. The evaluation results for the creep-fatigue crack propagation were compared with those of the observed images from the structural test. The assessment results for the creep-fatigue crack behavior according to the French Al6 procedure showed that the Al6 is overly conservative for the creep-fatigue crack propagation in the present case with a short hold time of one hour.

  • Schizandrae Fruits has been used as a traditional Oriental medicine for treatment of many stress-induced diseases. In the present study, we investigated inhibitory activity of enzymatic hydrolysate of Schizandrae fructus (SC-EX) in growth of tested intestinal microorganism and activity of bowel inflammation related enzyme. SC-EX was added to the proteose peptone-yeast extract-fildes (PYF) media to investigation the effect on the growth of type culture of intestinal microorganism. The growth of lactic acid bacteria such as Bifidobacterium species and Lactobacillus species was accelerated by more than 3% concentration of SC-EX. But, growth of harmfulness bacteria such as E.coli, Clostridium sp. Staphylococcus sp. Streptococcus sp. was inhibited by more than 3% concentration of SC-EX. Also, SC-EX was exhibited a concentration-dependent inhibitory activity of the bowel inflammation related enzymes. The SC-EX was showed 76% and 92% inhibitory activity of 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooygenase at 5% additional concentration respectively. Our results indicated that SC-EX may possess improvement effect on the intestinal flora and Anti-inflammatory effect on the bowel.

  • Thermal barrier coating (TBC) which is used to protect the substrate of gas turbine is exposed to high temperature environment. Because of high temperature environment, thermally grown oxide (TGO) is grown at the interface of thermal barrier coating in operation of gas turbine. The growth of TGO critically affects to durability of TBC, so the evaluation about durability of TBC with TGOs of various thickness is needed. In this research, TGO was inserted by aging of TBC specimen to evaluate the effect of the TGO growth. Then thickness of TGO was defined by microstructure analysis, and thermal fatigue test was performed with these aging specimens. Finally, the relation between thermal fatigue life and the TGO growth according to aging time was obtained.

  • The characteristics of mechanical behavior were estimated for Ti-6Al-4V alloy with four kinds of microstructure prepared with heat treatments. For this study, impact test, tensile test and fatigue crack growth test were performed, and then compared mechanical properties on the four microstructures. Furthermore, for quantitative evaluation, fractal dimensions of crack pass were obtained using the box counting method. The main results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) The microstructures exhibited equiaxed microstructure, bimodal-microstructure and lamellar microstructure by heat treatment. (2) The impact absorbed energy and elongation is superior in the bimodal-microstructure, and the hardness and tensile strength are superior in the lamellar microstructure. (3) The fatigue crack growth rate is similar to all microstructures in the low ${\Delta}K$ region. The fatigue crack growth rate of equiaxed microstructure is fastest, and that of lamellar microstructure is lowest in the high ${\Delta}K$ region. (4) The fractal dimension D of lamellar microstructure is higher then that of the equiaxed microstructure and bimodal microstructure.

  • In this investigation, ecotoxicity of nano and micro metal oxides, namely silica ($SiO_2$) and alumina ($Al_2O_3$), on the growth of green algae (Porphyridium aerugineum Geitler) is discussed. Effects of nano and micro particles on the growth, chlorophyll content and protein content of algae are analysed using standard protocols. Results indicate that $SiO_2$ nano and micro $SiO_2$ particles are non-toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler up to a concentration of 1000 mg/L. In addition, $Al_2O_3$ microparticles are less toxic to P. aerugineum Geitler, whereas $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles are found to be highly toxic at 1000 mg/L. Moreover, $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles decrease the growth, chlorophyll content, and protein content of tested algae. In addition, zeta potential and contact angle are also important in enhancing the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles in aquatic environment. This study highlights a new insight into toxicity evaluation of nanoparticles on beneficial aquatic organisms such as algae.

  • Most medical colleges in Korea have been shifting from traditional education to outcome-based education, which is the general trend in medical education. The purpose of this study was to make some suggestions in light of the reality and challenges of student assessment in medical education from the perspective of outcome- based education. First, those who are responsible for student assessment should be diversified to include faculty, residents, students, and evaluation committee members. They need separate roles in educational evaluation, so evaluation competencies are required for them. Second, various methods for evaluation and score interpretation can be used for effective evaluation. We can adopt diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation functionally, and the norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, growth-referenced, and ability-referenced evaluation based on criteria for score interpretation. Finally, various evaluation domains and test forms can be administered together in the common lectures in the medical school. We can test not only knowledge but also skills and attitudes, with diverse test forms such as supply and performance types.

  • Objectives: Lung cancer remains a deadly disease with unsatisfactory overall survival. Cisplatin, a standard platinum (Pt)-based chemotherapeutic agent, has the potential to inhibit the growth of lung cancer. Its use, however, is occasionally limited by severe organ toxicity. However, until now, no systematic study has been conducted to verify its efficacy with proper experimental support in vivo. Therefore, we examined whether biosynthesized Pt nanoparticles (NPs) inhibited human lung cancer in vitro and in vivo to validate their use in alternative and complementary medicine. Methods: We evaluated the in vitro and the in vivo anticancer efficiencies of biosynthesized Pt NPs in a subcutaneous xenograft model with A549 cells. Severe combined immune deficient mice (SCID) were divided into four groups: group 1 being the vehicle control group and groups 2, 3 and 4 being the experimental groups. Once the tumor volume had reached $70-75mm^3$, the progression profile of the tumor growth kinetics and the body weights of the mice were measured every week for 6 weeks after oral administration of Pt NPs. Doses of Pt NPs of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 mg/kg of body weight were administered to the experimental groups and a dose of honey was administered to the vehicle control group. The efficacy was quantified by using the delay in tumor growth following the administration of Pt NPs of A549 human-lung-cancer xenografts growing in SCID mice. Results: The in vitro cytotoxicity evaluation indicated that Pt NPs, in a dose-dependent manner, inhibited the growth of A549 cells, and the in vivo evaluation showed that Pt NPs at the mid and high doses effectively inhibited and delayed the growth of lung cancer in SCID mice. Conclusion: These findings confirm the antitumor properties of biosynthesized Pt NPs and suggest that they may be a cost-effective alternative for the treatment of patients with lung cancer.

  • Measuring and evaluating the business performance plays a very important role in managing business. It is because business performance, in any types of industry, can be evaluated and managed properly only when the measurement of its performance is estimated, and because its performance can be improved through an efficient and effective management. Therefore it is essential to build up the performance evaluation system to raise management efficiency of the foodservice industry, to reinforce competitive power of the food service industry. This study tried to propose a novel point of prospective and method in which the performance evaluation in any family restaurant should be illuminated and be performed. In this study, BSC provided the main conceptional framework for evaluating the performance of a family restaurant, and evaluation items of BSC four prospectives - financial, customers, internal business process, and learning and growth-were adjusted so as to be fitted into the business field. Furthermore, this study verified the validity of the proposed performance evaluation method through specific case analyses and used AHP to quantify its validity objectively. Finally, this study found the fact that non-financial prospectives, compared to financial prospectives, should be more importantly considered as the performance evaluation index of the family restaurants. Especially, the study showed that the proportion of performance evaluation indexes related to Customers prospective and Learning and Growth prospective revealed very highly, therefore variables such as customer satisfaction index, per employee productivity, education and training, customer response rate, employee satisfaction index should be emphasized as key factors at the process of selecting indexes and measuring their performance evaluation of the food service industry.

  • In this study, predictive mathematical models were developed to estimate the kinetics of Staphylococcus aureus growth in processed meat product galbitang. Processed meat product galbitang was inoculated with 0.1 mL of S. aureus culture and stored at 4, 10, 20, $37^{\circ}C$. The ${\mu}_{max}$ (maximum specific growth rate) and LPD (lag phase duration) values were calculated. The primary model was used to develop a response surface secondary model. The growth parameters were analyzed using the square root model as a function of storage temperature. The developed model was confirmed by calculating RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) values as statistic parameters. The LPD decreased, but ${\mu}_{max}$ increased with an increase in the storage temperature. At 4, 10, 20 and $37^{\circ}C$, $R^2$ was 0.99, 0.98, 0.99 and 0.99, respectively; RMSE was 0.39. The developed predictive growth model can be used to predict the risk of S. aureus contamination in processed meat product galbitang; hence, it has potential as an input model for the risk assessment.
