Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is known to contain water-soluble substances that are biologically active. Aqueous or methanol extracts and residues from leaves of lettuce plants were assayed to determine their allelopathic effects, and the causative allelochemicals from fractions were quantified by means of HPLC analysis and bioassayed. Extracts from oven-dried leaf samples were more phytotoxic than those from freeze-dried samples. Leaf extracts of 40 g L$^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Early seedling growth of both alfalfa and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was significantly reduced by methanol leaf extracts. The major allelopathic substances analyzed by HPLC were coumarin, trans-cinnamic acid, o-coumaric acid, p-coumaric acid and chlorogenic acid. Of them p-coumaric acid was found as the greatest amount (8.9 mg 100 g$^{-1}$ ) in the EtOAc fraction; only coumarin was found in all the fractions. Hexane and EtOAc fractions of L. sativa reduced alfalfa root growth more than did BuOH and water fractions. These results suggest that lettuce had potent herbicidal activity, and that its activity differed depending on type and amount of causative compounds by fraction.

Si-doped GaAs single crystals were grown by vertical gradient freeze using PBN crucibles. The amount of oxide layer $B_{2}O_{3}$ in PBN crucible was changed($0{\sim}0.2wt%$) and measured the concentration of carriers. The segregation coefficients of Si in GaAs melt decreased rapidly from initial 0.1 to 0.01 as the amount of $B_{2}O_{3}$ increases. At the same time, concentration of carriers was shown to decrease. It is likely that the reaction between dopant Si and $B_{2}O_{3}$ in GaAs melt results in the reduction of Si dopants(donor) while increase in the amount of boron(acceptor). The thin layer of $B_{2}O_{3}$ glass in PBN crucible was proved to be a better way to reduce defect formation rather than the total amount of $B_{2}O_{3}$.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of peat and chemical fertilizer application on the growth of manilagrass and to obtain basic data for fertilization management of zoysiagrass. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. Application of peat with chemical fertilizer increased the growth of tops and under of Manilareass compared with control or single application of peat or chemical fertilizer through the growing season. 2. The number of shoot was increased with amount of peat applied, and especially over 2 times with the application of peat 3,000 kg with compound fertilizer application plot compared with the control. 3. The higher amount of peat application, pH and organic matter content in soil where increased at the end of experiment. 4. Calcium and magnesium contents of soil in plot were increased as the amount of peat were applied, but sodium content appeared to be little difference according to the amount of peat applied.
Experiments were conducted to know the inorganic compound absorption of leaf, and the organic component, oil content, fatty acid composition of seeds by different fertilizer levels and growth stage of Pungn-yeonggage. Ripening rate and seed yield were highest under the standard of nitrogen fertilizer level. Nitrogen and potassium amount of leaves were highest at 20 days after seedlings, but there was no difference in phosphate between growth stages. Absorptions of nitrogen and potassium were increased by applying double amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Oleic fatty acid content was found highest under the double amount of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilizer level, and linoleic fatty acid content was increased with double amount of phosphate fertilizer level.
The annual ring widths of tree and the vertical distribution of fine roots were investigated at 33 sites of pitch pine forests in Seoul, its vicinity and rural areas. The annual ring widths among 16 - 20 year-old pitch pines in urban areas were significantly lower than those in rural areas. The annual ring widths for the latest 5 years (1985-1989) for the age class of 11-20, 21-30 and 31-40 year old pines increased in the following order for all the age classes: urban areas< suburbs
Butterhead lettuce was grown hydroponically in a plant factory during summer season. To decrease the occurrence of tipburn and increase productivity, optimum cultivars, substrates, gully slope and height, and the amount of irrigation were evaluated in this experiment. Cultivars ‘Rex’ and ‘Flandria’ showed higher productivity with less tipburn as compared to the others in spite of lower growth rates and appeared to be suitable cultivars during summer season. Cocopeat showed high productivity due to superior physio-chemical characteristics. Appropriate gully slope which makes nutrient solution easy to flow was shown to be 1 to 2%. The amount of irrigation was appropriate at 2$\ell$/gully. Higher growth of the butterhead lettuce observed when the bed was at a lower position. Low bed was thought to be good for lettuce growth with proper humidity and average temperatures.
The nitrogen economy and primary production of a Helianthus annuus "Manchurian" population were studied with special reference to the pattern of seasonal changes of vertical distributions of dry matter and nitrogen quantities, and its quantitative significance was discussed in relation to the pattern of the plant population growth, distribution ratios among organs, and turnover rates of dry matter and nitrogen. The population was established in plant density of 11.1plant/$m^2$ at the experimdntal field of Kyungpook National University, Daegu. During the period of population developemnt (April-September, 1973), the annual inflow rates and outflow rates of dry matter and nitrogen were 5560 gDM/$m^2$/year and 89 gN/$m^2$/year, respectively. The distribution ratios of dry matter and nitrogen to leaves were 28% and 45%, to stems 48% and 18%, to roots 13% and 5%, and to flowers and seeds 11% and 32%, respectively. The maximum turnover rates of inflow of dry matter and nitrogen were attained in May-June, and were 216%/month and 210%/month, respectively. The amount of nitrogen demand was 52gN/$m^2$/year (58%) for the foliage growth, 13 gN/$m^2$/year(15%) for the stem growth, 20 gN/$m^2$/year(23%) for the reproductive organs, and 4 gN/$m^2$/year(4%) for the growth of the underground parts. The amount of nitrogen supply by the nitrogen withdrawn from senescing leaves and stems was 25gN/$m^2$/year(28%) and the amount of nitrogen absorption by the root from the environmental soil was 64 gN/$m^2$/year(72%). The ratiio of the a mount of produced dry matter to that of assimilated nitrogen during a year was calculated for this annual plant population as 60, which can be used as the nitrogen utility index.ity index.
Seedlings of Nongbaek representing strong cold tolerant variety of rice plant, Jinheung of medium variety and Tongil of weak variety were used respectively for the present study. These seedlings were water cultured in phytotron which maintained at the daytime and night temperature of 30-$25^{\circ}C$, 20-2$0^{\circ}C$, 20-15$^{\circ}C$ and 15-1$0^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of plant height, tillering rate, increase in dry weight and absorption pattern of important mineral nutrients at their early growth stage under each temperature conditions were observed. Generally, it appeared that Nongbaek was more active in the growth of plant height than Jinheung, and Jinheung was more active than Tongil under low temperature condition. The tillering rate of these three varieties was equally rapid while it was decreased in the order of weak cold tolerant variety, such as Tongil, Jinheung and Nongbaek as the temperature declined gradually. The dry weigh tincreasing curve showed almost the same pattern in the varieties at the treatment of each temperature. Under low temperature conditions, Nongbaek showed higher absorption rate of N per dry weight and higher absorption amount of per plant body, Jinheung followed and Tongil was the lowest. The absorption amount of P2O5 increased in the top part compared with the roots as temperature rose and decreased as temperature declined. There seemed to be no difference of absorption among the varieties which have different cold tolerance each other. Under low temperature the absorption rate of K per dry weight was high, as a whole, especially Nongbaek was markedly higher than the other two. The absorption rate of Ca, Mg and Fe was also equally high in all varieties under low temperature and Nongbaek showed a more absorptive tendency in the absorption amount under low temperature.

The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of food preservative addition and changes in composition of herb extract product on the growth of spoilage yeast, Zygosaccharomyces sp. Herbs such as Panax ginseng, Cinnamomum cassia, Lycium chinense, Zyzyphus juiuba and Jingiber officinale were altogether put into water and essence was extracted at 80oC, and then the extract was concentrated at 75oC. The herb extract product was made by adding vitamins, amino acids and honey to the concentrated herb extract. The amount of gas produced from the herb extract product was increased as inoculated cell number increased but decreased as Brix concentration increased. Gases were produced in small amount when incubation was made at 4oC but large amounts of gases were produced at 25 or 40oC of incubation. The gas production and growth of Zygosaccharomyces sp. were measured after browning reaction was induced by heating at 85oC for 12 hours. It appeared that heating treatment did not induce any significant change in the gas production and growth of the cell. The effects of addition of various sugar to the herb extract produce were also invesigated. Amounts of gas production were in the order of glucose>sucrose>oligosaccharide>stevioside. The viable cell count was measured as 6.0$\times$107 CFU/g when glucose was added to the herb extract product. The viable cell counts were 5.0$\times$106, 3.0$\times$103, and 3.0$\times$102 CFU/g in sucrose, oligosaccharide and stevioside added herb extract product, respectively. The amount of gas production from the herb extract product was remarkably reduced by addition of such food preservatives as sodium benzoate and DF 100. TLC(thin layer chromatography) chromatogram of the herb extract showed stability of the herb extract in the above treatments.
This study was designed to observe the efficacy of Boyangsengjang-Tang(BST) on the growth of rats. The effects on growth, and the secretion of hormones in the serum was measure. Male BALA/C mice(weight 20-25g), and male ICR rats(weigh 120-150g), were each divided into 3 groups : Sample A, Sample B and a Control group. Each group consisted of 4 mice and 5 rats. Mice received $5{\mu}{\ell}$ BST, and rats received $50{\mu}{\ell}$ BST, daily. Sample A was administered with normal BST for 3 weeks. Sample B was was administered with 10 times the normal amount of BST for 3 weeks. Control group was administered with normal saline for 3 weeks. The body weight, body length, subcutaneous fat, length of femur, serum GH, serum IGFBP-3 and serum in TSH were measured at 1, 2, and 3 weeks. The results were as follows ; 1. The body weigh of the rats increased significantly in Sample A after 3 weeks when compared with control group. 2. The body length in rats increased significantly in Sample A when compared with control group. 3. The amount of subcutaneous fat in the mice increased significantly in Sample B after 1 week when compared with control group. The amount of subcutaneous fat in rats increased significantly in Sample A and Sample B after 3 weeks when compared with the control group. 4. The length of the femur in rats increased significantly in Sample in A and Sample B in 1, 2, and 3 weeks when compared with the control group. 5. The level of GH, IGFBP-3 and TSH in the serum was not statically different when compared with the control group. According to the above results, BST (which reinforces the Kidney's Yang and strengthens muscle and bone) increases body weight, body length, subcutaneous fat and the length of the femur when compaired with the control group. BST therefore seems to improve growth.
