  • This study has been conducted with the purpose of examining the fatigue crack growth characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ short fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites made by squeeze casting process with different applied pressure and binder amount. Fatigue crack growth experiments have been performed under constant load amplitude method with a fixed load ratio. The rate of crack propagation was decreased with binder amount as well as applied pressure. Also fatigue crack growth path in matrix was changed from flat to rough mode with an increase of applied pressure. In the composites, fatigue crack was propagated to interface between matrix and reinforcement at 10MPa, but it was propagated to reinforcement at 20MPa. The major reason of thee result was considered that interfacial bonding force and microstructure of matrix were improved due to an increase of applied pressure. Localized ductile striation in the composites was observed at low growth rate region and such a phenominon was remarkable with an increase of applied pressure. At high growth rate region, the propensity of fracture appearance was changed from interfacial debonding to reinforcement fracture with an increase of applied pressure.

  • The focus of this study was to observe the growth of Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp., and Botryococcus braunii under mixotrophic conditions (i.e., added glycerol) with the aim of increasing the growth of biomass and algae oil content. A significant growth of biomass was obtained when grown in glycerol rich environment comparing to autotrophic conditions. 5 g/L glycerol yielded the highest biomass concentration for these strains. Mixotrophic conditions improved both the growth of the microalgae and the accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAGs). The maximum amount of TAG in Botryococcus braunii was reached in the growth medium with 10 g/L glycerol and Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp. with 2 g/L glycerol. The content of saturated fatty acids of Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp., and Botryococcus braunii was found to be 34.94, 14.23 and 13.39%, and the amount of unsaturated fatty acids was 65.06, 85.78 and 86.61% of total fatty acids, respectively. The fatty acid profiles of the oil for the culture possibility met the necessary requirements and are, therefore, promising resource for biofuel production.

  • Protein secretion in filamentous fungi has been shown to be restricted to actively growing hyphal tips. To determine whether an increase in the amount of growing surface area of a fungus can lead to an increase in the amount of protein secretion, we examined secretion in a temperature-sensitive Neurospora crassa mcb mutant that shows a loss of growth polarity when incubated at restrictive-temperature. Incubation of the mcb mutant at restrictive-temperature results in a three- to five-fold increase in the level of extracellular protein and a 20- fold increase in carboxymethyl cellulase activity relative to a wild-type strain. A mutation in the cr-l gene has been shown previously to suppress the apolar growth phenotype of the mcb mutant, and we find that the level of extracellular protein produced by a mcb; cr-l double mutant was reduced to that of the wild-type control. Immunolocalization of a secreted endoglucanase revealed that proteins are secreted mainly at hyphal tips in hyphae exhibiting polar growth and over the entire surface area of bulbous regions of hyphae that are produced following a shift of the mcb mutant to restrictive-temperature. These results support the hypothesis that secretion of extracellular protein by a filamentous fungus can be significantly increased by mutations that alter growth polarity.

  • The Purpose of this study is to analyze the contribution of the total human capital formation to economic growth in Korea. In order to assess the contribution of the total human capital formation to economic growth, aggregate production functions are estimated using two ways of ordinary least squares and polynomial distributed lags based on 1955 - 1988 time series data in Korea. The total amount of investment in human capital is calculated by adding each amount of investment in formal education, vocational training, inter-provincial migration, and health in pecuniary terms. The findings of this study could be summarized as follows ; (1) If we enumerate the variables in good order according to the importance, we get the following ; namely, total number of labor force, inter-provincial migration, vocational training, health, physical capital, and formal education. (2) The contribution of the human capital to economic growth is much more larger than that of physical capital. In particular, it appears that inter-provincial migration and vocational training make a great contribution to economic growth. (3) It appears that investment in formal education has a continuous effect for fifteen years and maximum effect is observed approximately eight years later. In the case of vocational training, the effect of investment lasts for about 12-14 years and its effect on economic growth reaches maximum with the passage of seven to eight years after initial investment. (4) Investment in vocational training contributes more in the long run compared with investment in formal education. The effect of investment in formal education lasts longer than that of vocational training, while the effect of investment in vocational training is considerably larger in the short run compared with the investment in formal education.

  • Estimating the high tuber solids needs a simulation system on potato growth, and its development should be obtained by using agricultural elements which analyze the relationship between crop growth and agricultural factors. An accurate simulation to predict solids level against climatic change employs a calculation of in vivo energy consumption and bias for growth and induction shape in a slight environmental adaptation. So, to calculate in vivo energy consumption, this study took a concept of estimate of the amount of basal metabolism in each tuber. In the validation experiments, the results of measuring solid accumulation of potatoes harvested at dates suggested by simulation agreed with the actual measured values in each regional field during the growth period of years from 2006 till 2010. The mean values of tuber solids level and inter-annual level variation in validation experiments were predicted well by the simulation model. And also, the results of validation experiments represent that concentration of tuber solids were due mainly to the duration of sunshine, above 190 hours per a month, and the cumulative amount of radiation, above 2,200 $MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, of the effective growth period.

  • This study was conducted to obtain proper amount of solid swine manure and poultry manure in the beginning phase of Cornus kousa growth by investigating the initial germination, seedling growth increment, dry weight, chlorophyll content change, body nutrient uptake and chemical changes of soil according to the concentration of solid swine manure and poultry manure fertilization. When treated with solid swine manure and poultry manure, seed germination rate was the highest in the control. However germination rate showed a tendency to decrease when treated with high concentration of swine manure and poultry manure. The survey results of the growth increment were all higher than that of the control. At the 1.0% treatment of both swine and poultry manure, the seedling height growth was highest. Poultry manure treatment made higher result than swine manure treatment at each treatment. Dry weight was the highest at the 1.0% treatment by both swine and poultry manure. Dry amount declined sharply at the 2.0% treatment. Poultry manure was higher in weight than swine manure at every treatment. Chlorophyll content was the highest at the 1.0% treatment by both swine and poultry manure, but declined sharply at the 2.0% treatment. The survey content was higer than that of the control. The amount of nutrients absorbed in the seedling body was generally high at the 1.0% treatment of swine manure and poultry manure. For the planting soil of Cornus kousa the higher concentration of swine manure and poultry manure was, the lower pH became. However, nitrogen, got higher. available phosphoric acid, exchangeable K, Na, and Mg got higher.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of charge carrier lipid on the skin penetration, retention, and hair growth of topically applied finasteride-containing liposomes. Finasteride-containing liposomes were prepared by traditional thin film hydration method using Phospholipon$^{(R)}$ 85 G and cholesterol with or without charge carrier lipid (1,2 dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate or 1,2-dioleoyl-trimethylammonium-propane for anionic and cationic charge, respectively). Freshly prepared finasteride-containing liposome suspension was applied on the hairless mouse skin, and skin penetration and retention were measured using Keshary-Chien diffusion cell. Non-liposomal formulation (ethanol 10% solution containing 0.5 mg/ml of FNS) was also used as a control. The amount of finasteride in the diffusion cell and mouse skin was measured by HPLC. The hair growth was evaluated using depilated male C57BL/6N mice. Mean particle size of all finasteride-containing liposomes was less than a micron, and polydispersity index revealed size homogeneity. Skin penetration and retention studies showed that significantly less amount of finasteride was penetrated when applied as anionic liposome while more amount of the drug was retained. Specifically, in liposome prepared with 10% anionic charge carrier lipid, penetration was 12.99 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ while retention was 79.23 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ after 24 h of application. In hair growth study, finasteride-containing anionic liposomes showed moderate efficacy, but the efficacy was not found when applied as cationic liposomes. In conclusion, topical application of finasteride using anionic liposome formulation appears to be useful option for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia to avoid systemic side effects of the drug.

  • Korea also plans to introduce Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) for strengthening market functions after 2012 as United States and several members of EU countries did. Through the introduction of RPS, it requires energy industry to supply new and renewable energy at fixed rate. Therefore, it will contribute to the distribution of new and renewable energy. This paper analyzed the economic effect of the introduction of RPS using CGE. The summary of the paper on the analysis of the economic effect based on endogenous growth theory under imperfect market competition by using CGE is as follows; Since RPS possibly regulates the amount of new and renewable energy, it can achieve the target amount of new and renewable energy without fail. As achieving the target amount accurately, the distribution of more advanced skills can be expected. However, GDP reduction can occur because investment cost increases due to the requirement of new and renewable energy supply. Therefore, in the long run, it is appropriate to introduce RPS because it contributes to the distribution of new and renewable energy and can be utilized as a new growth engine to encourage economic growth.

  • According to the statistics of the Ministry of Environment, the amount of food waste generated in Korea is 15,903 tons, which accounts for about 30% of the daily household waste. Food waste in Korea is on the rise, and various odors, greenhouse gases, and leachate generated in the process of discharging, transporting, and processing are emerging as social problems. Accordingly, there is a need for a method for recycling food waste. Therefore, this study was carried out to establish an appropriate limiting dose by manufacturing fertilizer mixed with food waste powder and treating it on tomatoes to investigate the growth and yield of crops. The experiment was carried out with continuous cultivation in 2021 (1st year) and 2022 (2nd year), and the treatment groups were set to No Treatment (NT), Chemical Fertilizer (CF), Mixed Fertilizer (MF), and Mixed Fertilizer×2 (MF×2). As a result of the 1st year growth survey, shoot and root length did not show a significant difference between the treatment groups, and the fresh weight showed a significant difference between the MF and MF×2. As a result of the 2nd year growth survey, there was no significant difference in shoot length, root length, and dry weight between the treatment groups, and the fresh weight of the CF was significantly greater than that of the MF×2. The yield of 1st year, MF×2 increased significantly compared to other treatment groups. In the case of 2nd year, CF, and MF×2 show significantly high values compared to NT. Judging from these results, continuous cultivation using food waste powder mixed fertilizer did not have a significant effect on crop growth and yield. However, it is considered that several studies including continuous cultivation experiments are needed to accurately set the appropriate application amount and limit the application amount of the mixed fertilizer for food waste.

  • The effect of administration of red pepper Capsicum annuuml on the growth rate and resting metabolic rate in male chickens was investigated while varying the dose of red pepper. Growth of the chickens fed the rations containing small amount of red pepper(0.1% or 0.5%) was significantly enhanced. In the chickens given the ration containing 1% of red pepper, which showed the result similar to that of control chickens fed the ration without red pepper, retarded growth was seen as compared with the growth of the chickens fed the rations containing small amount of red pepper. Chickens administered the rations containing large amount of red pepper (5%, 10%, 60%) showed significantly retarded growth as compared with the growth of control chickens. There was no effect on the resting metabolic rate of chickens when administered varying amount of red pepper. The oxygen of resting chickens was varied $9.0-10.5ml/kg^{0.75}/min$ and rectal temperature was varied within the normal range ($41-42^{\circ}C$).
