  • A mathematical model based on the water flow equation was developed with the Ohm's analogy and the partial differential equations. Simulation of water uptake was performed by numerically solving the equations with the aid of a differential equation solver, DGEAR in IMSL package, in FORTRAN version. The input data necessary were climatological parameters (temperature, solar radiation, humidity and wind speed). plant parametors (leaf water potential, leaf area, root conductivity and root length density) and soil parameters (hydraulic conductivity and The graphical comparison of the simulated and measured water contents as the functions of time showed good agreement, but there still was some disparity due to possible inacouracy of the field measured parameters. The simulated soil evaporation showed about 2 mm/day early in the growing period and dropped to about 0.4 mm/day as the full canopy developed and the soil water depleted. During the dry period, soil evaporation was as low as 0.1 mm/day. The transpiration was as high as 5mm/day. Deep percolation calculated from the flux between the 180-cm layer was about 0.2mm/day and became smaller with time. After the soil water of upper layers depleted, the flux reversed showing capillary rise. The rate of the capillary rise reached about 0.07mm/day, which was too low to satisfy water uptake of the root system. Therefore, to increase use of water in deep soil, expansion of the root system is necessary.

  • A study on vegetation in the Mangyeong River and Dongjin River basins and the surrounding regions of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land was conducted in a series of efforts to determine the expected ecological changes in the salt marshes, to restore their vegetation, to explore the restoring force of halophyte, to examine the community mechanism and, ultimately, to rehabilitate marshy land vegetation along the lakeside, coastal dune and salt marshes of the Saemangeum Project Area. The findings of the study may be summed up as follows: Five species such as Suaeda japonica, Salicornia herbacea, Atriplex gmelini, Aster tripolium and Suaeda asparagoides that are mostly distributed in the estuary of the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land were analyzed to examine the mechanism of halophyte to maintain their community. To find out the strategies of plants for survival and the cause of forming community structure, a research was made as for appearance ratio of biomass, root lengths and germination. With regard to biomasses of halophyte, the biomass of Suaeda japonica increases rapidly, while Salicornia herbacea adopts a strategy of unstable growth pattern by which the biomass increases slowly in parallel with its slow speed of growth since initial appearance of young sapling. In contrast, Suaeda asparagoides, Atriplex gmelini and Aster tripolium choose to adapt themselves to environment promptly by being transformed into life form of annual or biennial plant, a pattern that is presumed to be favorable and stable for survival in the later stage of growth. In short, there is a sharp distinction among the 5 species: i.e. Suaeda japonica that begins to grow fast in the length of surface and underground section but slows down from the mid-stage on; Salicornia herbacea that grows slowly in the beginning step but starts to step up from the middle onward; Atriplex gmelini and Aster tripolium growing slowly in the initial stage but fast later on; and Suaeda asparagoides that turns from the constant growth in the beginning to rapid growth in the later period. The outcomes of the analysis into status of growth and influencing factors of Suaeda japonica in the sowing field that is most widely prevalent in the Saemangeum Reclaimed Land as a sort of ecological pioneer in the salt marshes showed that the average size of grass lands, density and number of individuals increase in the natural sowing field as well as in the plowing field regardless of their physical as well as physico-chemical features of the soil as the season progresses from June to October of a year.

  • Objective: This study was designed to determine how feeding diets differing in crude protein (CP) and undegraded intake protein (UIP) levels affected productivity, blood metabolites, carcass characteristics, and the production economics of Hanwoo steers. Methods: Thirty-six Hanwoo steers (age = 8.2±0.5 mo; body weight = 254±16.1 kg) were assigned at random to one of three treatments (4 steers/pen; 3 pens/treatment): i) a low-CP diet (LP; control) containing 12.1% CP with 35.1% UIP, 12.0% CP with 36.8% UIP, and 12.9% CP with 48.8% UIP, in the growing, fattening, and finishing periods, respectively; ii) a high-CP, low-UIP diet (HPLU) containing 15.0% CP with 33.7% UIP, 14.0% CP with 35.7% UIP, and 13.1% CP with 46.7% UIP, respectively; and iii) a high-CP, high-UIP diet (HPHU) containing 15.0% CP with 45.8% UIP, 14.0% CP with 44.6% UIP, and 13.0% CP with 51.1% UIP, respectively. Results: The treatments did not affect feed intake and growth performance, except for average daily gain during the fattening period that tended to be the lowest (p = 0.08) in the HPLU-fed steers. The feed CP conversion ratio over the entire feeding period was higher with high-CP diets. The treatments did not affect most blood metabolites; however, blood cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein concentrations during the fattening and finishing periods were the lowest in steers fed a HPLU diet. The treatments had negligible effects on cold carcass weight, yield traits including longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness, yield index, and yield grade, plus quality traits including meat color, fat color, texture, and maturity. However, marbling score and frequency of carcass quality grade 1++ were greater in HPHU-fed steers. Conclusion: Feeding diets with higher CP and UIP levels did not affect growth performance but tended to improve the carcass quality of Hanwoo steers, resulting in greater economic return.

  • The natural regeneration pattern was evaluated for 11 useful hardwood species in the natural deciduous forest where three different silvicultural practices (two-storied system, shelterwood system, and selection system) were applied and passed by three growing seasons. The study forest was presently dominated by Quercus mongolica in the upper canopy. However, since the analysis indicated that the number of regenerated seedlings of Acer mono and Fraxinus rhynchophylla was fairly abundant enough, these two species were anticipated to have the possibility to be among dominant species along with Quercus mongolica. The results of seedling occurrence after regenerating cutting showed that the number of seedlings was estimated for 3,145/ha(10 times of overstory) in the two-storied system, 6,885/ha(9 times of overstory) in the shelterwood system, and 2,275/ha(4 times of overstory) in the selection system. The estimation was varied by species, and the number of stump sprout was more abundant. The proportion of seedlings was high in 60~80% of overstory density and 60~70% of understory coverage, and high in the site of less than $25^{\circ}$ of slope and from southwest to northwest of aspect. These results were still varied by species. Stump diameter and height had little influence on the occurrence of sprout.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have generated a strong interest in the development of solid-state devices owing to their low cost and simple preparation procedures. Effort has been devoted to the study of electrolytes that allow light-to-electrical power conversion for DSSC applications. Several attempts have been made to substitute the liquid electrolyte in the original solar cells by using (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis (N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9-9'-spirobi-fluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) that act as hole conductor [1]. Although efficiencies above 3% have been reached by several groups, here the major challenging is limited photoelectrode thickness ($2{\mu}m$), which is very low due to electron diffusion length (Ln) for spiro-OMeTAD ($4.4{\mu}m$) [2]. In principle, the $TiO_2$ layer can be thicker than had been thought previously. This has important implications for the design of high-efficiency solid-state DSSCs. In the present study, we have fabricated 3-D Transparent Conducting Oxide (TCO) by growing tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowire (NWs) arrays via a vapor transport method [3] and mesoporous $TiO_2$ nanoparticle (NP)-based photoelectrodes were prepared using doctor blade method. Finally optimized light-harvesting solid-state DSSCs is made using 3-D TCO where electron life time is controlled the recombination rate through fast charge collection and also ITO NWs length can be controlled in the range of over $2{\mu}m$ and has been characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Structural analyses by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the ITO NWs formed single crystal oriented [100] direction. Also to compare the charge collection properties of conventional NPs based solid-state DSSCs with ITO NWs based solid-state DSSCs, we have studied intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS), intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and transient open circuit voltages. As a result, above $4{\mu}m$ thick ITO NWs based photoelectrodes with Z907 dye shown the best performing device, exhibiting a short-circuit current density of 7.21 mA cm-2 under simulated solar emission of 100 mW cm-2 associated with an overall power conversion efficiency of 2.80 %. Finally, we achieved the efficiency of 7.5% by applying a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite sensitizer.

  • Water temperature during the culturing period was 10.4-25.5$^{\circ}C$ and there was a little difference between rearing sites. Salinity (25.00-31.17 psu) and DO (over 6.13 mg/l) showed reasonable condition for the growth of bay scallop. Concentrations of chlorophyll-a were ranged 1.69-7.40 $^{\mu}$g/l, and they fluctuated monthly in the every sampling site. During the growing period from June to October, dominant phytoplankton species were Ceratium sp. in Nammeon and Hoejin, Chaetoceros sp. in Dolsan. Density of phytoplankton was high in July, August and October, but it was low in September and November. When young bay scallops were cultured for 185 days in Nammyeon, Hoejin and Dolsan, shell heights were grown for 0.19 mm/day, 0.18 mm/day and 0.16 mm/day, respectively, and total weights were increased 0.16 g/day, 0.16 g/day and 0.13 g/day, respectively. Daily growth rates of shell height were 0.606%, 0.581% and 0.549%, and daily growth rates of total weight were 1.972%, 1.857% and 1.746%, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model were 52.62 mm, 51.74 mm and 48.91 mm, respectively. Survival rate was the highest in Nammyeon (87.0%), but the rates in Hoejin and Dolsan sharply decreased after November.

  • This study describes the effect of myo-inositol on sustained cell division and plant regeneration from cotyledon-derived protoplast of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). Freshly isolated protoplasts were cultured in modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium removed ammonia ions and containing $0.4\;mg\;l^{-1}$ thiamine HCl, $100\;mg\;l^{-1}$ myo-inositol, $2\;mgl^{-1}$ 2,4-D, $0.5\;mgl^{-1}$ BA, $30\;gl^{-1}$ sucrose and several concentrations of myo-inositol (2, 4, 6, 8, 10% (w/v)) as an osmotic stabilizer. After 3 weeks of culture in the dark at $25^{\circ}C$, the plating efficiency of cabbage protoplasts reached to $22.5{\pm}2.9%$ when cultured in modified MS medium supplemented with $2\;mgl^{-1}$ 2,4-D, $0.5\;mgl^{-1}$ BA, $30\;gl^{-1}$ sucrose and 8% (w/v) of myo-inositol at a density of $2{\times}10^5$ protoplasts/ml. Rapidly growing cell colonies after 3 weeks of culture were transferred to the same culture medium removed osmoticum. To induce shoot regeneration from calluses, calluses with about 2 mm in diameter were transferred to the MS medium containing $2\;mgl^{-1}$ BA and $0.5\;mgl^{-1}$ NAA. After further three weeks of incubation onto the medium in the light, green shoots were formed on the surface of calluses at a frequency of 30%. Upon transfer to half-strength MS basal medium, roots were formed onto the bottom of regenerated shoots without auxin treatments. These regenerated plantlets were successfully acclimatized to soil transfer, grown to normal mature plants. The cabbage protoplast culture system established in this study could be applied for production of somatic hybrids or cybrids by asymmetric protoplast fusion and mass proliferation of elite somatic clones of cabbage.

  • We have developed a technique for growing thin oxides (6~10 nm) by the Last step TCA method. N-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor (n-MOS) capacitor and n-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor's (MOSFET's) having a gate oxide with chlorine incorporated $SiO_2/Si$ interface have been analyzed by electrical measurements and physical methods, such as secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The gate oxide grown with the Last strp TCA method has good characteristics as follows: the electron mobility of the MOSFET's with the Last step TCA method was increased by about 7% and the defect density at the $SiO_2/Si$ interface decreases slightly compared with that with No TCA method. In reliability estimation, the breakdown field was 18 MV/cm, 0.6 MV/cm higher than that of the gate oxide with No TCA method, and the lifetime estimated by TDDB measurement was longer than 20 years. The device lifetime estimated from hot-carrier reliability was proven to be enhanced. As the results, the gate oxide having a $SiO_2/Si$ interface incorporated with chlorine has good characteristics. Our new technique of Last step TCA method may be used to improve the endurance and retention of MOSFET's and to alleviate the degradation of thin oxides in short-channel MOS devices.

  • Two species of halophilic bacteria were isolated from five salted seafoods and identified by 16S rDNA sequencing homology. One was identified as Halomonas subglaciescola and other four strains were belong to Halomonas marina. The identity of all isolates with standard organisms was above $95\%.$ H. subglaciescola, H. marina IN, and H. marina SH-2 grew in salinity condition from $3%\;to\;18\%$ NaCl but growth of H. marina SQ and H. marina SH-l grew in salinity environment from $8\%\;to\;17\%.$ Maximum biomass of H. subglaciescola, H. marina IN, H. marina SQ, H. marina SH-1, and H. marina SH-2 growing in LB medium containing $15\%$ NaCl were about 3.2, 4.5, 4.5, 5.7, and 4.2, however the maximum biomass in LB medium containing $5\%$ NaCl were about 2.2, 1.1, 0.7, 0.2, and 2.4 as optical density at 660 nm, respectively. In scanning electron micrograph, unknown material (mucus) attached to outer membrane of all isolates was observed. When mucus isolated from halophilic bacterial cell was added to culture of E. coli, E. coli grew in medium containing $15\%$ NaCl.

  • Soil erosion was investigated to find out difference in amount of soil eroded from slope land at early stage of young grasses and at later stage with sufficient cover with different slopes. The six experimental plots were formed on 8$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$, with 2m width and 20m length located at the Hwak Kok Ri, Chun Sung Gun, Kang Weon Do. The amount of soil eroded and run-off were collected from 1. May 1987. to 30. October 1988, growing with grasses sowed 2. September 1987. The results were as follows : 1. The amount of soil eroded from the plots except 8$^{\circ}$ plot exceeded the allowable soil erosion with 14 ton/ha during the land formuing before establishment of sufficient surface cover with grasses. Therefore, proper soil conservation practice should be recommeneed. 2. The amount of soil eroded increased exponentially with increased slope as 1.24 times for 15$^{\circ}$1.65 times for 20*, and 2.94 times for 25$^{\circ}$, m comparing with standared 10$^{\circ}$ polt. 3. The erosion occurred mainly by high density of rainfall exceeding lOOmm as consecutive precipitation during the raining peried or accompanied by typhoon passing. 4. The significant soil erosion, when the land covering ratio was over 95% after seeding of grass, was recorded only by the single continuous storms over lOOmm of concentrated precpitation, of which amounts were 1/73~/250 of the allowable soil erosion. 5. The amount of soil erosion from the plots with sufficient surface cover with grasses increased as the slope increased however the amounts were small enough to be neglected. 6. Desolation by soil erosion would be minor problem up to the slope of 20$^{\circ}$ when the mountainous area developed to the grassland with sufficient cover. But it could be concerned on the turn to the hare land by the treading of livestocks with the land slope over 25$^{\circ}$. 7. The run-off of rainfall increased by the increament of slope but it was not exponentially increased. 8. The run-off of rainfall after seeding of grass reduced by 20% in comparison with the run-off of rainfall before seeding, which might be due to infiltration of rainfall promoted by the grass roots.
