  • Recently, spillways are need to control stable water level for supporting main dams because of floods by unusual change of weather such as Typhoon Rusa. This study has been focused on the amount of leakage through the rock mass distributed fractures and joints under the opened emergency spillway. It is very important to evaluate the amount of leakage as these affect stability of spillway by interaction between effective stress and pore pressure. The commercial program MAFIC has been used for analyzing groundwater flow in fractured rock mass. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 2.85∼ 3.79×10-1, 3.32×10-1 and 1.70×10-2 m3/day/m2 respectively. Secondary, we have estimated the effect of grouting after the transmissivity(Tf) of joint 1 as main pathway of leakage known from above results was changed from 1.78×10-7 to 1.59×10-9 m2/s. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 7.80×10-4∼1.53×10-3, 1.18×10-3 and 1.32×10-4 m3/day/m2 respectively. As the result, the amount of leakage after grouting has been decreased by a ratio of 1 to 277.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of Column Jet Method(CJM) as countermeasure against settlement and slope sliding of existing marine structure due to embankment load behind reclaimed revetment. CJM is to make high-strengthened body by compacting and grouting cement mortar after forming artificial space in the ground with ground relaxition machine or high pressure water jetting. Before the ground was reinforced by CJM, the result of slope stability analysis was not satisfy the allowable safe ratio, but after the ground was reinforced by CJM, the stability of slope was over the allowable safe ratio and stable, Therefor, the application of CJM to restraint settlement and sliding of marine structure was very satisfactory.

  • Cement grouting method is generally applied for the purpose of reinforcement of deteriorated reservior. Problems have been raised due to the limit of the injection material. In order to solve these problems, various grout materials have been developed. However, there are many cases in which the grounds are disturbed in actual field. In this study, the physical properties of hybrid grout with high fineness and high viscosity characteristics were analyzed to enable penetration into the ground. Optimum inflation agent was selected and mixed with the grout. The pressure and compaction effect on expansion was examined and its effectiveness was verified. From the result of confirming expansion ratio, uniaxial compressive strength, expansion pressure and compaction effect, the HI-E (2%) sample was analyzed to be excellent in improvement effect by the inflation agent. Hence, hybrid grout can be effectively applied for the impermeable and reinforcement method of deterioration reservoir and tide embankment.

  • In this study, as part of the "Small-scale $CO_2$ Injection-Demonstration Project in Offshore Pohang Basin", we performed drilling and completion of a $CO_2$ injection well from the offshore platform installed in the Yeongil Bay, Pohang city, Gyeongsang buk-do. The drilling of injection well was carried out from an offshore platform installing on the sediment formations of the Pohang Basin. Drilling diameters were reduced by stages, depending on the formation pressure and groundwater pressure along a depth and the casing installation and cement grouting in drilled hole were performed at each stage. The injection well was drilled to a final depth of 816.5 m with a hole diameter of 4 7/8 inches (${\Phi}124mm$) and the perforated casing for an injection section was installed in a depth of 746.5~816.5 m. Injection tubing, packer, and christmas tree were installed for the completion of an injection well for $CO_2$. The validation project of the $CO_2$ injection was accomplished successfully by drilling the injection well and installing the injection facilities, and through the suitable $CO_2$ injection process. The current injection facility is a facility for small-scale injection demonstration of 100 tons. In the case of large-scale demonstration facility test of a capacity of 10,000 tons, research is underway through the upgrading of the injection facilities.

  • This paper presents a case study on the ground settlement and volume loss estimation for slurry pressure balanced shield TBM tunnelling in weathered zone of granite rock. Settlement at each stage of shield tunnelling was analyzed and the volume losses and settlement trough factors were estimated from observations. In addition, using the existing volume loss evaluation method in literature, volume losses were estimated considering ground properties and actual driving parameters. Most of ground settlement occurred during passage of shield skin passage and after backfill grouting, and the measured total volume loss and trough curves appeared to coincide with literature. Shield and tail loss obtained from field measurement were found to be around 90% and 60% of the predictions, where tail loss indicated larger deviation than shield loss.

  • Cavities often develop behind the vault during the construction of double-arch tunnels, generally in the form of various defects. The study evaluates the impact of cavities behind the vault on the mechanical and failure behaviors of double-arch tunnels. Cavities of the same sizes are introduced at the vault and the shoulder close to the central wall of double-arch tunnels. Physical model tests are performed to investigate the liner stress variation, the earth pressure distribution and the process of progressive failure. Results reveal that the presence of cavities behind the liner causes the re-distribution of the earth pressure and induces stress concentration near the boundaries of cavities, which results in the bending moments in the liner inside the cavity to reverse sign from compression to tension. The liner near the invert becomes the weak region and stress concentration points are created in the outer fiber of the liner at the bottom of the sidewall and central wall. It is suggested that grouting into the foundation soils and backfilling injection should be carried out to ensure the tunnel safety. Changes in the location of cavities significantly impact the failure pattern of the liner close to the vault, e.g., cracks appear in the outer fiber of the liner inside the cavity when a cavity is located at the shoulder close to the central wall, which is different from the case that the cavity locates at the vault, whereas changes in the location of cavities have a little influence on the liner at the bottom of the double-arch tunnels.

  • This paper introduces a new steel jacketing method for reinforced concrete columns with lap splice and evaluates its performance by a series of axial tests of concrete cylinders. At first, 45 concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying the design compressive strengths of 21, 27 and 35 MPa and, then, the part of them was jacketed with two-split-steel jackets under lateral confining pressure. The parameters in the first test were the steel jacket's thickness and the existence of adhesive between steel and concrete surface. In the second test, whole steel jackets were used to wrap cylinders with lateral pressure. Also, a double-layer jacket consisted of two steel plates was introduced; a cylinder was jacketed by two steel plates one after another. The effect of the new method was verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests for plain and jacketed cylinders. The steel jacket built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of the jacketed cylinders with respect to the plain cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed the more increased compressive strength, and the ductility at failure depended on the welding quality on steel jackets. The adhesive between steel and concrete surface reduced the confining effect of the steel jackets. The whole jacket showed more ductile behavior than the two-split jackets. The double-layered jackets were estimated to possess an equal performance to that of a single steel jacket having the same thickness of the double-layered jacket. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the constitutive model of steel-jacketed concrete; which showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the models.

  • U.J.S.(Ultra Jetting System) is a new ground improvement method registered as a Utility Model No.0205798, which has fundamentally improved the existing jetting method of J.S.P.(Jumbo Special Pattern System). In this study, the uniaxial compressive strengths of improved soil-grout structures by U.J.S. and J.S.P. which have been conducted on the construction site are compared. Also, the differences between the U.J.S. and J.S.P. are analyzed by considering the role of the auger bit, the injection distance measured from the axis of boring tubes, and angle of injection measured from the horizontal. The specimens of soil-grout structures are taken from the improved soils by using the U.J.S. and J.S.P. The uniaxial tests for the samples are conducted after the curing period of 28 days. The uniaxial compressive strengths and the coefficients of elasticity of surface and distance from the axis of boring. This study shows that the mean strength of the improved structure by J.S.P. is 1.9 times greater than by J.S.P.

  • Generally, the groundwater pressure is not considered in the design of concrete lining of bottom drainage tunnel. This design method implies that the phreatic surface is drawdown to the bottom of tullnel. When tile groundwater is continually supplied without changing of groundwater table, there is a possibility at which the groundwater pressure acting on the tunnel lining after the completion of tunnel. Therefore, the safety of tunnel lining must be checked in this case. In this paper, the stability of bottom drainage tunnel which is affected by groundwater discharge is analzed by using of the Finite Element Method at the 2 sections of subway where the groundwater level has a tittle change during the construction. As the result of analysis, the grouting for the water tightness and the permanent monitoring system of tunnel are required for maintaining of long-term stability of bottom drainage tunnel for the case of groundwater plassure acting on the tunnel lining is greater than that of design stage.
